  • Attachment of the orthodontic bracket conducted during the window opening procedure can result in failure due to various adverse conditions such as blood or saliva contamination, or other wet conditions. For the success of the bracket attachment, reduction of total operation time is crucial. The purpose of this literature is to evaluate the differences between the final resultant shear bond strength of the conventional method of using phosphoric acid and self-etching primer, and that of the operation time-reduced method in which the curing step is omitted subsequent to the primer application. A total of 40 human maxillary incisors were prepared. Group I(control group) and II were etched with 37% phosphoric acid and Group III and IV were conditioned with self-etching primer. Attachment of the group I and III was conducted by manufacturer's instructions. The operation time of Group II and IV was reduced by eliminating the curing step after the primer application. The resultant shear bond strength of each group was measured and an adhesive remnant index (ARI) was recorded. The mean shear bond strength of group I, II, III, and IV were 14.16 MPa, 8.33 MPa, 8.29 MPa, and 6.48 MPa respectively. Significant differences could only be found between the control group and the experimental groups (p < 0.05). The ARI indicated no significant difference among all groups.

  • Electrostatic capacitance measurement method in a fine hose was proposed, in which two ring-type electrodes were disposed on the hose in the direction of fluid flow instead of the conventional face-to-face electrodes. With the proposed electrode structure, we realized a Ringer's solution exhaustion detector for an IV(invasive vein) injection set. On a 4 mm-diameter hose of IV set, we disposed two ring-type electrodes of 10 mm width at a distance of 5 mm each other and obtained 0.72 pF and 2.51 pF for air and 10 % dextrose Ringer's solution in the hose, respectively. The capacitance between the two electrodes varied with the hose-wraparound coverage of electrode as well as the width of electrode and the distance between the electrodes. For hose-wraparound electrode coverage of 75 %, the capacitance varied from 0.62 pF to 1.98 pF with the Ringer's solution level between the two electrodes. A charge amplifier converted the capacitance. variation into electric signal and a comparator was used to detect whether Ringer's solution was exhausted or not. The result was delivered to a host using a RF transmitter with 320 MHz carrier frequency.

  • The rates of the reaction Of $[MoO_2(S_2CNC_4H_8)_2]$ with triphenylphosphine in 1,2-dichloroethane have been by the spectrophotometric method. The increase in absorbance at 514 nm has been interpreted as a result of production of $[Mo_2O_3(S_2CNC_4H_8)_4]$ and the decrease in absorbance then corresponds to the reduction of $[Mo_2O_3(S_2CNC_4H_8)_4]$. The data suggest mechanisms involving the formation of $\mu$-oxo dimer in the first stage and molybdenum(IV) in the second stage.

  • This study investigated the effects of surface treatment on the tensile bond strength of resinbonded prosthesis. The Rexillium III specimens were treated with $50{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ blasting. Type IV gold alloy specimens were treated with $400^{\circ}C$ heating and tin plating method. All specimens were bonded with MBAS composite resin cement and followed by immersion test into the $37^{\circ}C$ water bath for 7 days. The specimens were debonded in tension with an Instron machine and observed with SEM. The modes of failure were recorded also. The following conclusions were obtained : 1. The tensile bond strength decreased in following order. $50{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ basted Resillium III group, Type IV gold alloy group treated with $400^{\circ}C$ heat and tin plating type IV gold alloy group, and statistical significant differences were observed(p<0.05). 2. The tensile bond strength decreased in all groups after 7 days immersion test, but statistical significant differences were observed in Rexillium III specimens only. 3. The sharp and irregular surface were observed in Rexillium III, but $400^{\circ}C$ heat treated and tin plated groups had round and broad surface in SEM. 4. The models of bond failure were cohesive-adhesive failure mainly.

  • The inertness of eight-coordinate tetrakis(picolinato)tungsten(IV) complex has been investigated by spectroscopic method in nonpolar solvent at 60$^{\circ}C$, 75$^{\circ}C$, 90$^{\circ}C$, 120$^{\circ}C$, and reflux condition. Until 2 days, showed the inertness whether existance of oxygen or not. After 2 days, showed the oxidation of W(IV) complex much more rapidly than substitution, which had $k_{obs}(sec^{-1}) {\varpropto} 1/[ligand]^2$. On sealing the sample under Ar gas, showed the inertness until 50 days, which had $k_{obs}(sec^{-1}) = 8.8{\times} 10^{-7}$. The$^1H$-NMR peak of $H_6$ in complex was diminished, otherwise that of free ligand was grown up. This result indicated that this complex was very inert.

  • Cyclic voltammetry and chronocoulometry have been used for characterization of catechol violet (CV) at the hanging mercury drop electrode in acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer solution. At pH 2.94 a nearly symmetric cyclic voltammetric wave due to an irreversible weak adsorption of CV on mercury was obtained at concentration of $0.53{\mu}mol\;dm ^{-3}$. Under these conditions, CV adsorbes in a monolayer. Upon increasing the concentration, the symmetry of the wave decreases; it can be attributed to a mixed diffusion adsorption process. The amount of the adsorbed catechol violet on the HMDE expressed as surface concentration as well as the surface areaf occupied by one molecule$(\sigma)$ were calculated. It was found that the values obtained for f and o utilizing cyclic voltammetric and chrono-coulometry are almost identical. A 1:1 and 1:2 Th (IV)-CV complexes are formed on addition of thorium (IV) to catechol violet. These complexes are adsorbed and reduced on the HMDE at more negative potentials than the peak potential of free CV, Using the square-wave (SW) technique, the adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry, ACSV, of these complexes was studied. It was found that the SW-ACSV of Th(IV)-CV can be applied to the determination of thorium at the nanomole level. Optimum conditions and the analytical method of determination were presented and discussed.
