  • The testicular volume measured by a Prader orchidometer was compared with sperm count in semen, the levels of serum FSH, LH, testosterone, prolactin, estradiol and progesterone in 59 nonobstructive infertile men. 1. The causes of infertility were primary hypogonadisms in 50 patients (35 unknown, 9 Klinefelter syndromes, 6 varicocels) and secondary hypogonadism in 9 (5 isolated FSH deficiencies, 1 hyperprolactinerriia, 3 pituitary hypogonadisms). 2. Decreased levels of serum FSH (less than 4 mIU/ml) did not correlate with testis volume but increased level of serum FSH (more than 20 mIU/ml) were mostly noted in the testis less than 10ml. 3. Decreased level of serum testosterone (less than 3 ng/ml) were distinguishably noted in the atrophied testis less than 5 ml. 4. There was no correlation between the testicular volume and the levels of serum prolactin, estradiol, and progesterone. Coclusively, testicular volume less than 11 ml suggests poor spermatogenesis, but normal testicular volume dose not nessarily rule out poor spermatogenesis. Function of Leydig cell is relatively well preserved in atrophied testis of 5 to 10 ml comparing with that of seminiferous tubule.

  • The combined activities of dextranase and amylase(DXAMase) from Lipomyces starkeyi KSM 22 produced from starch fermentation inhibited or prevented dental plaque formation. The activities were stable in commercial mouthwash products; DXAMase activity retained over 93% of original activity after 6 months at 23℃. We examined the effects of enzyme inhibitors and active ingredients in mouthwash on DXAMase activity. The DXAMase was stable with 0.29%(w/v) EDTA, 20% (v/v) ethanol, 0.05% (w/v) fluoride, and 0.05% (w/v) SDS. Among the active ingredients of mouthwash, sodium benzoate (up to 1 %, w/v) had no inhibitory effect on either dextranase or amylase activity. In the case of cetylpyridinium chloride, the addition of 0.05% (w/v) inhibited 6% of dextranase activity and 13% of amylase activity. Propylene glycol (up to 1%, w/v) showed no inhibitory effect on either enzyme activity. DXAMase (5 IU/㎖) in mouthwash could remove pre-formed films of glucan-bound S. mutans cells. The addition of 0.1 IU/㎖ DXAMase in mouthwash prevented the formation of insoluble-glucan. These in vitro properties of L. starkeyi KSM 22 DXAMase are desirable for its application as a dental plaque control agent.

  • Metabolic syndrome has been strongly associated with elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT), a surrogate of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. We investigated the relationship between metabolic syndrome and elevated ALT in the general Korean population. The study sample was comprised of 4,781 Korean adults who had participated in the 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Metabolic syndrome was defined by National Cholesterol Education Program for Adult Treatment Panel III. Elevated ALT was defined as an enzyme activity > 40 IU/L for men, and > 31 IU/L for women. ALT was measured by enzymatic methods. Among participants, 425 (8.9%) subjects displayed elevated ALT. The odds ratios (ORs) for elevated ALT increased in subjects with obesity or one of components of metabolic syndrome such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high fasting glucose, high triglyceride, and low HDL cholesterol after adjusting for age and sex. The unadjusted OR for elevated ALT increased according to the number of components of metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 0.96-2.32 for 1 component; OR = 3.0, 95% CI: 1.98-4.61 for 2 components; OR = 6.3, 95% CI: 4.29-9.35 for ${\geq}3$ components; p for trend < 0.0001). This trend did not differ after adjustments for putative risk factors including age, sex, BMI, smoking status, and alcohol intake. Metabolic syndrome is implicated as a strong risk factor of elevated ALT in Korean adults.

  • This experiment was carried out to establish an effective technique of in vitro maturation of porcine follicular oocytes. Porcine ovaries were collected from an abbatoir and delivered to the laboratory in phosphate buffered saline in an hour. Immatured follicular oocytes were collected from the ovaries and divided into groups by the size of follicles and by the attachment of granulosa cells. The follicular oocytes were cultured in m-KRB solution supplemented with FCS(10%), follicular fluid(10%) or hormones of PMSG(10IU/ml), hCG(10IU/ml ) and $estradiol-17{\beta}(1{\mu}g/ml)$ for 48 hours at $39^{\circ}C$ under an atmosphere of 5% $CO_2$ in air. The results are as follows ; 1. The mean recoveration rate of follicular oocytes was 61.8%. 2. The maturation rate was significantly(p<0.05) higher when the oocytes were collected from large-sized follicles and under good state of granulosa cell attachment. 3. The maturation rate was significantly(p<0.01) promoted when the follicular oocytes were cultured in m-KRB solution supplemented with follicular fluid(74.8%) or hormones and fetal calf serum(70.6%).

  • This study was designed to investigates the effects of Korean pueraris radix water extract in Al(Aluminum) administered rats. Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing $100{\pm}10g$ were used for this experiment and divided into following 6 groups; control group, 3% pueraria radix in water extract group, 1000 and 2000ppm Al group, 1000 and 2000ppm Al group with 3% pueraria radix in water extract group. The Al administered rats were given 1000 and 2000 ppm of $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ disoved in the distilled water. The Al content in the rats tissue of Al administered group was lower than in the rats tissue of Al group with 3% pueraria radix in water extract group. Plasma levels of renin and aldosterone activity was increased by Al administration group, compared with 3% pueraria radix in water extract group and Al administred group. Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase(GOT) and Glutamate pyruvate transaminase(GPT) were increased in Al-administered group and lower in the 3% extracts of pueraria radix in water extract group. Lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) was lower in the 3% extracts of pueraria radix-Al group than in the Al group. This results suggested that pueraria radix in water extract group has a lowering effects on the accumulation of Al and it is belived that the pueraria radix in extracted water group has some protective effects to Al administered in rats, but the mechanism of these effects was obscure.

  • Taurine has been reported to prevent cardiovascular disease and improve liver function, diabetes, and platelet function. However, there are few studies on the effects of taurine in Koreans. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of basal doses of taurine on blood glucose, liver disease, and lipid diseases among Korean college students. The study included a taurine intake group and a control group; each group consisted of 15 students. Taurine was administered at a standard dose of 1,000 mg for 2 weeks postprandial. All subjects were excluded from medication or other food besides meals provided by the dormitory. The liver test gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) in the taurine group decreased to $23.53{\pm}25.73IU/L$ before intake and to $15.15{\pm}4.91IU/L$ after intake (P=0.186). Lipid metabolite triglyceride (TG) was $100.42{\pm}28.33mg/dL$ before intake and $80.22{\pm}17.08mg/dL$ after intake (P<0.05). Total cholesterol (T-Cho), low density cholesterol (LDL-C), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Consequently, taurine improved liver function and lipid metabolism. Hematologic tests showed a decrease in segmented neutrophil percentage and an increase in lymphocyte percentage. Thus, taurine also seems to be related to immunological function.

  • The present study was designed to determine the effect of HCG administration to pregnant rats on the dam and its fetus including the corpora lutea, the body weight of the fetus, the resorption of the fetus and the malformations of the fetus in skeletal development when a single dose of HCG 50 IU or 100IU on day 4.8.12 or 16 of pregnancy. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Administration of HCG had no effect on the corpora lutea. 2. Fetal resorption was observed in animals treated with HCG on days 4.8 or 12, high incidence being treated with HCG on day 4 of pregnancy. 3. Administration of HCG had no effect on the weight of the fetus except decreasing in it treated with HCG on day 4 of pregnancy. 4. Administration of HCG might be able to induce the skeletal variations but was not the skeletal malformations and abnormal ossification of the fetus. The extra 14 ribs was observed in animals treated with HCG on days 8 and 16 of pregnancy, respectively. 5. It is suggested that HCG administration to pregnant rats was able to induce the fetal resorption and might be able to induce skeletal variations in the fetus.

  • In order to analyze the positive rate of hepatitis B surface antibody by age before and after hepatitis B vaccination, 13,855 serum specimens who were referred for the hepatitis B surface antibody test at the General Hospital of Jeju Hospital were examined by CMIA method. The positive rate of HBs Ab was 5,176 (37.36%). The positive rate according to gender was 40.13% for female and 34.77% for male. The age group with the highest HBs Ab average was in their 40's (399.86 mIU/mL), while the lowest age group was in the 90's (211.50 mIU/mL). It is remarkable that the age group with the highest HBs Ab positive rate is in the 30's, and that teenagers (age group of 10-20 years) had the lowest positive rate. Especially 15, 18, 19 years old was statistically significant. Consideration should be given to determining the titer of vaccination and to clarify the timing of vaccination.
