This paper reviews aspects of current design procedures for seismic design of structures, and specifically examines their relevance to the design of light framed residential buildings under earthquake loading. The significance of the various structural contributions made by the components of cold formed steel framed residential structures subjected to earthquake induced loadings has been investigated. This is a common form of residential construction worldwide. Particular attention is given to aspects related to ductility and overstrength, the latter arising principally from the contributions of the designated "non-structural" components. Based on both analytical and experimental data obtained from research investigations on steel framed residential structures, typical ranges of the ductility reduction factor and overstrength ratios are determined. It is concluded that the latter parameter has a very significant influence on the seismic design of such structures. Although the numerical ranges for the inelastic seismic parameters given in this paper were obtained for Australian houses, the concepts and the highlighted aspects of seismic design methodology are more widely applicable.
Objective: This study is to develop a design and evaluation guide to the ergonomic design of the farm working convenient equipments in order for the elderly to use them easily and safely. Background: The aging population has already increased in farm villages. But due to the usage of the farm working equipments that did not reflect the characteristics and functional changes of aging, accidents and patients with disease are increasing. Method: The study investigated the functional changes and physical, cognitive, and sensuous characteristics of the aged. By determining the criteria for classification of the convenient equipments by crop, and by finding out the items necessary for the ergonomic design, a guide to this study is proposed. Results: It is obvious that the physical, cognitive and sensuous functions change as the aging process continues. Therefore, for the design and evaluation of Control Panel, Control Lever, Frame Size, Shape, and Equipment Weight that are the necessary items for the ergonomic approach for the farm working equipments, such characteristics have to be reflected. Conclusion: Through this study, a guide to the design and evaluation of convenient equipments for the farm works that reflected the aging characteristics and functional changes has been proposed. Application: The result of this study is to expect not only designers but also related specialists to make the best use of it.

Machine element design is a very important course in the undergraduate program of mechanical engineering in that it presents traditional design concepts. While computer aided design(CAD) receives more attention, students tend to ignore the machine element design or traditional design concepts. However, design methodologies related to machine elements are utilized quite often in practical fields. Also, design methodologies provide good insight for the decision making process of modern design. Generally, CAD is used for simple drafting without the real design process in the undergraduate program. Design software has been developed for various machine elements. Through menu display, a user can select or furnish the design input such as design objects, dimensions, environmental forces and usages, and safety factors. Then the software carries out the design processes which are the same as those of textbooks. The result of the design is filtered to have the values in the standards. The designed machine element is drawn via commercial CAD software. The software has been developed with C language on a personal computer. The developed software is being utilized successfully in a design course, and the experiences are discussed in this paper. The software can be used in industries which require the repeated process of the machine element design.
As information and communication technology has developed remarkably, it has become possible to analyze various types of large-volume data generated at a speed close to real time, and based on this, reliable value creation has become possible. Such big data analysis is becoming an important means of supporting decision-making based on scientific figures. The purpose of this study is to develop a big data analysis tool that can analyze large amounts of data generated through engineering education. The tasks of this study are as follows. First, a database is designed to store the information of entries in the National Creative Capstone Design Contest. Second, the pre-processing process is checked for analysis with big data analysis tools. Finally, analyze the data using the developed big data analysis tool. In this study, 1,784 works submitted to the National Creative Comprehensive Design Contest from 2014 to 2019 were analyzed. As a result of selecting the top 10 words through topic analysis, 'robot' ranked first from 2014 to 2019, and energy, drones, ultrasound, solar energy, and IoT appeared with high frequency. This result seems to reflect the current core topics and technology trends of the 4th Industrial Revolution. In addition, it seems that due to the nature of the Capstone Design Contest, students majoring in electrical/electronic, computer/information and communication engineering, mechanical engineering, and chemical/new materials engineering who can submit complete products for problem solving were selected. The significance of this study is that the results of this study can be used in the field of engineering education as basic data for the development of educational contents and teaching methods that reflect industry and technology trends. Furthermore, it is expected that the results of big data analysis related to engineering education can be used as a means of preparing preemptive countermeasures in establishing education policies that reflect social changes.

According to the railway accident statistics in recent years, the frequency of accidents has been significantly reduced, due to the advance of related technologies and the establishment of safety information management systems. Nonetheless, accidents due to errors in the operation and maintenance phase and faults in safety design continue to occur. Therefore, to prevent accidents, guidelines for the safety design and manufacture of railway vehicles were established, and a request for the independent safety evaluation of safety designs was made. To respond to this, rail system developers must prepare safety cases as a safety activity product. One of the main items of these safety cases is the safety-related application conditions (SRAC) and, thus, the question of how to develop these SRAC is an important one. The SRAC studies reported so far focused only on the simplicity of the derivation procedure and the specific safety activities in the design phase. This method seems to have the advantage of quickly deriving SRAC items. However, there is a risk that some important safety-related items may be missing. As such, this paper proposes an improved method of developing the SRAC based on the idea of performing both the safety design and safety evaluation activities throughout the whole system lifecycle. In this way, it is possible to develop and manage the SRAC more systematically. Especially, considering the SRAC from the initial stage of the design can allow the safety requirements to be reflected to a greater extent. Also, an application case study on railway signaling systems shows that the method presented herein can prevent the omission of important safety-related items, due to the consideration of the SRAC throughout the system lifecycle.
Since the inception of off-line quality control, it has drawn a particular attention from research community and it has been implemented in a wide variety of industries mainly due to its extensive applicability to numerous real situations. Emphasizing design issues rather than control issues related to manufacturing processes, off-line quality control has been recognized as a cost-effective approach to quality improvement. It mainly consists of three design stages: system design, parameter design, and tolerance design which are implemented in a sequential manner. Utilizing experimental designs and optimization techniques, off-line quality control is aimed at achieving product performance insensitive to external noises by reducing process variability. In spite of its conceptual soundness and practical significance, however, off-line quality control has also been criticized to a great extent due to its heuristic nature of investigation. In addition, it has also been pointed out that the process optimization procedures are inefficient. To enhance the current practice of off-line quality control, this study proposes an integrated optimization model by utilizing a well-established statistical tool, so called response surface methodology (RSM), and a tolerance - cost relationship.

The process of verifying design concepts and ideas by producing real or equivalent model is essential in the product development process. Against this background, the purpose of this study is to consider the case of developing subjects that can systematically cultivate the ability to produce model from the basic stage to a certain level or higher, focusing on design engineering majors. As a theoretical consideration for this, prior studies related to making such as modeling or prototyping in related areas and majors such as industrial design are considered, followed by Bloom's revised taxonomy model and Hioshi Ishikawa's industrial design program as a methodological consideration for curriculum development. Finally, by applying this, we propose a new course that includes a lecture plan corresponding to the 16th week of learning, which is a general semester of university education. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that producing a physical model was still essential for the development of a new design, and accordingly, it was also necessary to establish a systematic curriculum suitable for the major area. Since the scope of this study extends to the development of subjects, in subsequent studies, it is necessary to consider the contents such as verification and reflection of the utility as competency education through actual application and suggestion of improved subject design.

This paper summarizes some of approaches that could be taken for data exchange in a non-interoperable work environment and reports lessons learned from the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park project. Today's widespread application of building information modeling (BIM) to the construction and architectural design industries requires a change in the cooperation between business organizations and their methods of communication. In particular, the interoperability of information between interdisciplinary organizations, which use specific programs for different purposes, has become a critical issue. More than just a technical problem, it is also highly related to an organization's collaboration culture and the particulars of a specific project. This paper describes the interoperability issue that occurred during the construction documentation phase of the irregularly shaped building project, Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and Samoo Architects and Engineers, from the perspective of the technological problem and the collaborative organizations' communications. Although the perfect compatibility of information is not possible, this paper deals with a practical approach to the interoperability issue by examining the way the end-users of computer-aided design (CAD) resolved the interoperability problems in practice.

Recently, many social, economical and political problems have occurred in the field of urban energy supply because of the depletion of fossil fuels and the international climate change agreements and the current energy-related laws focus on individual buildings which makes them difficult to implement. Also, the policies for energy savings have increased day by day, but it is difficult to establish efficient urban plan because of lack of integrated policies and institutions. Current legal systems for urban plan does not cover domestic and international climate change agreements, energy related industry's structural changes and other environmental problems such as embodied energy and global warming. This paper tries to investigate current conditions of legal system to provide fundamental materials for improving energy conservation in urban plan.
Computer games need game formulas which express game rules by mathematical functions because the game rules are automatically processed by computers. The game formulas are usually multi-variable functions. So the design of a game formula is a complex and difficult problem because it is the same problem of the design of a multi-variable function which should satisfy the related game rules. In this paper we propose a new method which can systematically design game formulas. The purposed method is the decomposing of tree structure for a game formula by analyzing the tree structure of the operands which have single-variable functions on the lowest levels. So the design method can change the complex and difficult problem of the design of a multi-variable function to the simple and easy problem of the design of the single-variable function which should satisfy the related game rules.
