  • This study examines online social media diffusion across different countries that will help to provide a picture of current global online social network services (SNSs). Analyzing country-level data drawn from 78 nations, we find that non-technological factors such as culture and language as well as technological factors including Internet penetration rate and smartphone adoption rate have significant effects on online social media diffusion. These findings, derived from a broad range of different countries, not only provide theoretical insights into understanding critical factors that enable successful global expansion of online social media services but also help practitioners plan their marketing strategies more effectively in a global context.

  • Grain boundary diffusion plays a significant role in fission gas release, which is one of the crucial processes dominating nuclear fuel performance. Gaseous fission produce such as Xe and Kr generated during nuclear fission have to diffuse in the grain lattice and the boundary inside fuel pellets before they reach the open spaces in a fuel rod. These processes can be studied by 'tracer diffusion' techniques, by which grain boundary diffusivity can be estimated and directly used for low burn-up fission gas release analysis. However, only a few models accounting for the both processes are available and mostly handle them numerically due to mathematical complexity. Also the numerical solution has limitations in a practical use. In this paper, an approximate analytical solution in case of stationary grain boundary in a polycrystalline solid is developed for the tracer diffusion techniques. This closed-form solution is compared to available exact and numerical solutions and it turns out that it makes computation not only greatly easier but also more accurate than previous models. It can be applied to theoretical modelings for low bum-up fission gas release phenomena and experimental analyses as well, especially for PIE (post irradiation examination).

  • As global competition for green car, that is environmentally friendly car, is getting tougher, the governments and the related industries are putting their core efforts in its diffusion. However, the green car sales are disappointing so far. To overcome the gridlock, it is necessary to develop concrete analytical framework to understand the diffusion process. Based on causal loop analysis from the previous work, we have identified main variables and relationships of them in the diffusion process and developed a stock-flow diagram and mathematical formula for the main components. The model would be applied for further quantitative simulation on the diffusion process of green car and other innovative goods as well. Also, we have suggested constructive insights for the policy makers and for the related industries. First, it is important to increase consumers' willingness to consider through marketing and word of mouth to accelerate the diffusion process. Second, in the perspective of the industry, the market share of green car should be increased at the earliest possible stage and this could be done by enhancing each components of green car attractiveness(e.g. price, driving range, social infra). Third, companies should develop a balanced investment between consumer and technology sector through a flexible financial policy. Fourth, the government continuously has the role of investing in the related R&D and social infra building. We expect the green car diffusion model and related formula from the research can provide meaningful tools to analyze the diffusion process of other new and innovative goods based on its deep researched literature review.

  • Recently, as many big marine concrete structures increase, it is necessary that chloride ion diffusion coefficient of concrete shall be evaluated but it will take a long time to evaluate chloride ion diffusion coefficient of concrete. Accordingly, many test methods are suggested to evaluate chloride ion diffusion coefficient in a short period time by the promotion in electro chemical ways but the systematic study for this is insufficient. Therefore, this study evaluates chloride ion penetration and diffusion features by three representative electric promotion tests targeting for three different cements whose ingredients are different and analyzes the correlationship between them. As a result, diffusion features of chloride ion varied according to the cement ingredients and three ingredients cement in which blast furnace slag powder and fly ash are mixed in constant ratio, which shows the most excellent cement diffusion properties. For diffusion properties of chloride ion, the correlationship between test methods are good.

  • The Internet possesses not only features of mass media but also features of word of mouth communication. Communication channel is considered as one of most important variables in diffusion process. In this paper, we examined functionality of technology diffusion on the Internet through the use of meta tags. We have measured the coefficients of the Bass diffusion model which has been well-established in new product diffusion. This research shows that the Bass model is appropriate for describing technology diffusion on the Internet. The external influence as represented by the coefficient of innovation was found to be much smaller while the internal influence dominates in all meta tag diffusion. In meta tag diffusion, the internal influence as represented by the coefficient of imitation was increased at least twice bigger than that of consumer durables and information technology. Collecting necessary data in social sciences research can be a burden. This research shows that it can be alleviated through the use of software agents over the Internet. The research made use of software agents for collecting longitudinal data from publicly accessible archive such as Archive.org.

  • This study primarily aims at identifying what factors significantly affect the diffusion of knowledge management systems(KMS) and finding out how these identified factors can be effectively managed, especially for Korean companies. The research model is derived based on previous researches on innovation diffusion, information systems implementation, and KMS. The model is used to examine the role of determinants in influencing the extent to which KMS is diffused within organizations. Independent variables of this research are composed of technical characteristics, organizational characteristics and environmental characteristics. 'Breadth of diffusion' and 'depth of diffusion' concept are used to measure the extent of KMS diffusion which is the dependent variable of this model. The 101 companies of total 1,000 samples responded to the survey. To analyze tile results of this empirical study, we performed the multiple regression analysis. As a result, it was shown that the relative advantage, complexity, information system maturity, size, top management support, champion, competitive pressure have influences on both the breadth and the depth diffusions. On the other hand, the organizational culture, valuation and compensation, and uncertainty of environmental factors were not verified to be significant. This empirical study will provide Korean companies with insights into effective ways to diffuse the KMS and succeed in business competition.

  • Diffusion/penetration rates of finishing agents are not a major criterion in the design of low molecular weight finishing agents. However, in the case of polymeric finishing agents, high molecular weights result in large hydrodynamic volumes and diffusion/penetration of the finishing agent into the substrate may become a critical factor in the design of textile finishing agents. Thus the effect of the molecular weight of a model compound, polyethylene glycol, on its diffusion through a cellulose membrane or cotton fabric is studied. Diffusion experiments of polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 400, 1000, 2000, 4600, 8000, and 10000 through cellulose membrane or fabric was carried out in a glass U-tube diffusion apparatus and the half penetration times and the penetration coefficients were determined. Both the half penetration times and the penetration coefficients exhibited a significant change between molecular weight 2000 and 2500 as the molecular weight of polyethylene glycol increased, suggesting that there is a critical molecular weight above which diffusion/penetration becomes difficult. Based on this study on a model compound, it is suggested that polymeric textile finishing agents can be expected to exhibit similar behavior.

  • Drying shrinkage of concrete occurs due to the loss of moisture and thus, it is controlled by moisture diffusion process. On the other hand, the shrinkage causes cracking of concrete and affects its moisture diffusion properties. Therefore, moisture diffusion and drying shrinkage are two coupled processes and their interactive effect is important for the durability of concrete structures. In this paper, the two material parameters in the moisture diffusion equation, i.e., the moisture capacity and humidity diffusivity, are modified by two different methods to include the effect of drying shrinkage on the moisture diffusion. The effect of drying shrinkage on the humidity diffusivity is introduced by the scalar damage parameter. The effect of drying shrinkage on the moisture capacity is evaluated by an analytical model based on non-equilibrium thermodynamics and minimum potential energy principle for a two-phase composite. The mechanical part of drying shrinkage is modeled as an elastoplastic damage problem. The coupled problem of moisture diffusion and drying shrinkage is solved using a finite element method. The present model can predict that the drying shrinkage accelerates the moisture diffusion in concrete, and in turn, the accelerated drying process increases the shrinkage strain. The coupling effects are demonstrated by a numerical example.

  • The hydrogen diffusion and trapping model with a numerical finite difference method (FDM) was modified and extended to accommodate $H_2S$ corrosion and scale forming processes of high-strength steel under tensile stress condition. The newly proposed diffusion model makes it possible to clearly understand combined effect of tensile stress and $H_2S$ corrosion process on hydrogen diffusion behaviors. The core concept of this theoretical approach is that overall diffusion behavior is separated into diffusion process through two respective layers: an outer sulfide scale and an inner steel matrix. Diffusion coefficient values determined by curve-fitting permeation data reported previously with the newly proposed diffusion model indicate that the application of tensile stress can contribute to continual increase in the diffusivity in the sulfide scale with a high density of defect. This suggests that the scale with a lower stability under the stress condition can be a key parameter to enhance hydrogen influx in the steel matrix. Consequently, resistance to hydrogen assisted cracking of the steel under tensile stress can be decreased significantly.

  • It is often the case with the durability design to use diffusion coefficient obtained from experimental test. From the analytic solution considering the starting time of exposure, it is confirmed that the diffusion coefficient from NT BUILD 443 underestimates real reference value.
