Study on the Causes of Premature Cracking of Epoxy Coatings for Ship's Ballast Tanks

  • Premature cracking of the epoxy coatings applied on ship's ballast tanks(BT) can lead to damage of ship's hulls. To avoid this, it's important to have clear understanding of the underlying mechanism and primary factors of the coating crack. In this study, the efforts were made to clarify the integrated effects of main factors, i.e., initial coating shrinkage, thermally induced strain, steel-structural strain and the intrinsic coating flexibility at the initial and after aging, to the early cracking phenomena of epoxy coating in the ship's ballast tank. The coating crack is caused by combination of thermal stress, structural stress, and internal stresses which is closely related to chemical structures of the coatings. On the other hand, thermal stresses and dimensional stabilities would rarely play a major role in coating crack for ballast tank coatings with rather large flexibility. Crack resistance of the coatings at early stages can be estimated roughly by measuring internal stress, FT-IR and $T_g$ value of the coatings. A new screening test method was also proposed in this study, which can be possibly related to the long-term resistance of epoxy-based paints to cracking.

  • Recently UV laser is widely used to process micro parts using various materials such as polymers, metals and ceramics because it has a very high intensity at the focused spot area. It is generally known that there are still some difficulties for alumina($Al_2O_3$) ceramics to directly make micro patterns like holes and lines on the surface of working material using 355nm UV laser because the alumina has a very low absorption coefficient at that wavelength. But nowadays new alumna with nano-porous holes is developed and applied to advanced micro functional parts of IT, BT and BT industries. In this paper, we are going to show the mechanism of photo-thermal ablation for nano-porous ceramics. Inside hole there is a lot of multiple reflections along the depth of hole. Experimentally we can find the micro hole drilling and micro grooving on the surface of nano-porous alumina.

An Analysis of Static and Dynamic Behavior of the HSK Tooling System According to Bearing Characteristics (베어링특성에 따른 HSK 공구시스템의 정적 및 동적 거동의 유한요소해석)

  • Recently, the high-tech industries, such as the aerospace industry, the auto industry, and the electronics industry, are growing up considerably. Because of that, high machining accuracy and productivity of precision parts have been required. The tooling system is important part in the machining center. HSK tooling system is more suitable than BT tooling system for that of high speed machining center. It is because static stiffness and machining accuracy of HSK tooling system are higher than those of BT tooling system. In this paper, static and dynamic behavior of the HSK tooling System is analyzed according to bearing characteristics and lightweight parts. In order that, three different models of the HSK tooling system are modelled by using a 3D modeling/design program. More stable one in the models of HSK tooling system can be selected by using the FEA(Finite Element Analysis).

The Stress Distribution Characteristics of HSK Tooling System According to Spindle Speed (고속가공기용 HSK 툴링시스템의 주축회전속도에 따른 응력분포특성)

  • Recently, the high-tech industries, such as aerospace industry, auto industry, and electronics industry, are growing up considerably.   • A grinding technology is very essential to finish the surface of IT and BT industrial application parts such as wafer, optical connection part and lenses etc. However the finding machine has bead depended on imports. Especially, it is completely imported for machining high precision part relevant to domestic electric and communicational industries. The amount to import grinding machine is about $110milions. It takes about 35% of total import amount of all the machine tools. A domestic finder manufacturer is a very small-scaled bussinessman and research facilities is poor. Recently, it is increasing to demand high speed and precision grinding technology because it brings cost down and value added up. Its further study will be something related to inteligent grinding system fur value added and high precision part. It will make domestic grinding technology to its advanced country level.

  • The robot imitates humans and recognizes the external environment and judges the situation. The robot is a machine that operates autonomously. Robots are divided into manufacturing robots and service robots. Service robots are classified as professional service robots and personal service robots. Because of the intensified competition of productivity in manufacturing industries, rising safety issues, low birth rate and aging, the robots industry is emerging. Recently, the robot industry is a complex of advanced technology fields, and it is attracting attention as a new industry where innovation potential and growth potential are promising. IT, BT, and NT related elements are fused and implemented, and the ripple effect is very large. Due to changes in social structure and life patterns, social interest in life extension and health is increasing. There is much interest in the medical field. Now the artificial intelligence (AI) industry is growing rapidly. It is necessary to secure global competitiveness through strengthening cooperation between large and small companies. We must combine R&D investment capability and marketing capability, which are advantages of large corporations, and robotic technology. We need to establish a cooperative model and secure global competitiveness through M&A.

  • The concept of RIS(Regional Innovation System) has widely been used in discourse and policy issues in Korea. But most studies of RIS concern on BT or IT industries combining with diverse regional agencies in urban areas. Some other studies were concentrated on general ideas or concept of the RIS. The purposes of this study are (1) to suggest a analytical method to select specialized industry in local autonomy, (2) to analyze the relationship between specialized industry and gross sales of agricultural products and stock farm products, (3) to analyze the relationship between gross sales of agricultural products and stock farm products and GRDP, and (4) to construct a model of RIS that fits particularly for rural areas. This study particularly accentuates that a specialized industry is more meaningful when it can raise GRDP, which eventually can give positive effect of RIS on regions.

  • The 21st century is characterized by knowledge-based economy or society. The most important features of this knowledge society are the close relationship between science and technology, and the birth of science-based technologies or industries. Bioindustry which is the core area in this era is a representative science-based industry(SBI). In SBIs including BT(biotechnology) and ICT(information and communication technology), the creation of scientific knowledge and the ability to capitalize on that are very important. The United States leadership in research across the spectrum of science and technology is the result of the success in both achieving high level of research and capitalizing on that enabled them to grow. Capitalization is the process that transforms the results of research into practical concrete national benefits. It is such a dynamic process that cant be clearly modeled. In this study, we propose the dynamic capitalization process for innovation of SBIs in terms of the fuel and engine and analyse our potential.

  • Advanced countries centered by National Supercomputing Center are inclined to construct Grid Infra and develop key applications in high performance computing field.   • The recent trend in technology development is characterized as technology convergence, mainly between IT, BT and NT and also more and more industries are starting to use several technologies simultaneously or in a combined way theses days. As a result, the needs on technology interaction analysis is increasing for strategic technology management and policy-making. Responding to the needs, this research deals with technology innovation process in terms of technology competition, particularly focusing on the 17 new growth drivers in 3 areas, which has been announced by the Korean government as a new growth vision for Korean economy, and analyzing their co-evolutionary process. For the analysis, patent data, a representative data on technology innovation, is adopted. Then, Lotka-Volterra Competition model, a model frequently used to describe the dynamism of competitive innovation is applied to the data. The research results are expected to support strategic decision-makings such as effect policy-making or R&D priority-setting, by analyzing the relationship between the 3 areas, the 17 new growth drivers, or the particular technologies in the drivers.
