  • This study explores the intersection of literary studies and artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on the common theme of human emotions to foster complementary advancements in both fields. By adopting a comparative perspective, the paper investigates emotion as a shared focal point, analyzing various emotion-related concepts from both literary and AI perspectives. Despite the scarcity of research on the fusion of AI and literary studies, this study pioneers an interdisciplinary approach within the humanities, anticipating future developments in AI. It proposes that literary sensibility can contribute to AI by formalizing subjective literary emotions, thereby enhancing AI's understanding of complex human emotions. This paper's methodology involves the terminology-centered extraction of emotions, aiming to blend subjective imagination with objective technology. This fusion is expected to not only deepen AI's comprehension of human complexities but also broaden literary research by rapidly analyzing diverse human data. The study emphasizes the need for a collaborative dialogue between literature and engineering, recognizing each field's limitations while pursuing a convergent enhancement that transcends these boundaries.

  • Fueled by the digital transformation era, the 150th anniversary of Marcel Proust's birth (2021) and 100th anniversary of his death (2022) witnessed a surge in digital humanities research. This goes beyond supplementing traditional methods; it fosters new approaches like Nicolas Lagonneau's 'Proustonomics' website (archiving online/offline Proust discourse) and 'Proustographe' (quantifying and visualizing data related to Proust). The Buffalo Proust Project (2021) provided online access to materials on his life and works, while the Corr-Proust project digitized his correspondence. While Korea lacks established digital Proust research, recent analysis of academic paper vocabulary (through word frequencies and word clouds) reveals significant thematic and quantitative development around 2000, paving the way for future Korean ventures in this exciting field. Digital humanities research offers the potential to unearth new research topics, enhance efficiency, and promote international collaboration, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of Proust and groundbreaking advancements in the field.

  • This study aims to analyze the similarities and dissimilarities of various versions of <Heungbu-jeon> at both micro- and macro-levels using contents analysis techniques and the Hamming distance metrics. The 28 versions of <Heungbu-jeon> were segmented into 341 content units, and for each unit, the value of the content type was encoded. The dissimilarities between content types were compared among all versions by the content unit, respectively. The (dis-)similarities based on the content types of the 28 versions were aggregated and transformed into a distance matrix. The matrix was interpreted by multi-dimensional scaling, resulting into the two-dimensional coordinates. By visualizing the results by multi-dimensional scaling analysis, it was confirmed that the versions of <Heungbu-jeon> can be broadly divided into two groups. Hierarchical clustering and phylogenetic analysis were applied to analyze the clusters of the 28 versions, using the same distance matrix. The results showed that there are five clusters based on the micro-level analysis of (dis-)similarities within two major clusters. This study demonstrated the usefulness of applying digital humanities methods to encode the content of classical literary versions and analyze the data using clustering analysis techniques based on the (dis-)similarity of literary content.

  • This paper introduces Youngju Ryu's Writers of the Winter Republic: Literature and Resistance in Park Chung Hee's Korea, and examines its significance and limitations. The book examines the relationship between literature and politics during the Park Chung-hee Yushin era, focusing on Yang Sŏng-u, Kim Chi-ha, Yi Mun-gu, Cho Se-hŭi, and Hwang Sok-yong. The books starts by describing the relationship between the U.S. hegemony and the Park Chung-hee regime during the Cold War. The book shows how poets like Yang and Kim fought against the Park Chung-hee regime based on poems, trial records and memoirs, while it describes novelists such as Yi's resistance by how novels envisioned a community against the Park administration based on the keyword "neighborhood." This is significant in that it describes how literature from the Park Chung-hee era was able to stand on the front lines against the regime. However, it is regrettable that because the book adopts a heroic tale to describe their lives and literature, these are illuminated in a somewhat flat way. Also it is noteworthy that the lives and works of novelists after the 2000s were illuminated, but Yang and Kim's life and literature were not described. Furthermore, it is regrettable that women writers were not mentioned and its concept of "politics" is rather shallow. Overall, this book is very significant in that it introduces the relationship between Korean literature and politics in the Korea of the 1970s with rich data and a beautiful style, as well as allowing Korean studies researchers to reflect on the future of Korean studies.

  • The investment in healthcare industry has recently increased not only for global ventures but also for the domestic ventures. However, there has been hardship of founding and investment caused by healthcare startups characteristics that are costly and time consuming. In this study, the applicability of 'Lean Startup' theory to healthcare ventures was explored through the case of a domestic startup which accomplished funding from VC and KOSDAQ after establishing based on its technology in healthcare industry. There have been numerous case studies that applied 'Lean Startup' to IT industry. However, this case study that applied 'Lean Startup' to healthcare industry have some implications as follow: First, it is critical to conduct a hypothesis testing at initial research stage through R&D of 'MVP' (Minimum Viable Product) as the prototype testing is strictly prohibited in healthcare industry. Second, healthcare R&D teams ought to be well organized as startup teams and all researchers should be equipped with entrepreneurship as the licensing process in healthcare industry is time-consuming and costly due to issues like clinical studies. Lastly, management skills as smart and light as 'Lean Startup' are required in order to encourage young engineers' technology startups.

  • Sudden increase exceeding 30million in the number of smart phone users, and rising interest in the technology of augmented reality, is now trying to combine it with AR technology in other areas very much. The field of cultural heritage, which has been constructed by the Internet and 3D technology, is not unusual and this field is now rapidly changing thanks to the AR technology which can make users experience cultural heritage with high reality. The Palaces in Seoul, however, use fragmentary tools of information - lack of heritage commentators, leaflet, etc, even though the number of visitors is gradually increasing. Therefore, three-dimensional and comprehensive cultural heritage information service is needed with the guidance in the mobile era. This study utilizes the AR technology for building the Deoksugung Tourist Information Service Application(App.) applying the markerless-based recognition technology which is a more advanced tool than the location-based AR technology. This new AR technology can switch perceived real images such as the tablet of the King in the Palace of in the real world, patterns and pedestals into virtual world, which can reproduce the damaged cultural assets as 3D. This also composes photos of the past with the current buildings, which can increase people's interest and absorption of the contents, and helps them understand and be aware of Korean traditional culture and cultural heritage effectively. In addition, convergence between IT new technology, Augmented Reality(AR) and humanities through storytelling based implementation of cultural heritage in smart phone is attempted to demonstrate that there is strength in which augmented reality technique exerts infinite creativity based on actual reality world.

  • The problem of freedom is inseparably related to human life. It makes this not to be regarded as a problem restricted to the professional domain of ethics. It suggests rather that the problem of freedom is intimately connected with the philosophical groundwork for discussing the future direction of society, culture and science, and its regulative idea, a philosophical discussion which comes up inevitably with various social, economic and political problems, and problems related to the spirit of law. In this view, when we want to explain the problem of freedom as a fundamental one in reference to future direction of humanities and to find out a solution to this, our research only in accordance with the approach of history of philosophy runs into difficulties. The reason is that the problem of freedom has nowness together with historicity. Finding this problem to be a present one in our concrete human life, we can discuss it more meaningful under the methodological frame changed and developed by philosophical reflections since the modern age. And here I think a culturalistic approach reinterpreting hermeneutic insight and pragmatistic context methodologically can provide a pertinent clue for a theoretical work to investigate the problem of freedom and to find a solution to that because this approach considers historicity and nowness. For this purpose analysing truth intersubjectively and understanding freedom critically, this article tries to reconstruct symbolic interpretation and the concept of self constructed in community of language and action as a cultural horizon of freedom.

  • In an academic ecosystem evolving into open science, open peer review is gaining attention as a way to enhance transparency and openness in scholarly communication. This study examines the adoption of open peer review components in 118 open access journals that have implemented open peer review, and their characteristics by publisher type, country/continent, language, and discipline. Open peer review has been implemented in a variety of ways, including making review reports or pre-prints publicly available or disclosing the identities of authors and reviewers to each other. We also found differences in the components adopted across disciplines. It appears that commercial publishers, which account for a large proportion of publisher types, have generally adopted it, and it is mainly published in English in European countries. By discipline, we find more open peer review in the medical and natural sciences, which traditionally aim for open scholarly communication and fewer journals in the multidisciplinary and humanities. This provides insights into the adoption of open peer review by journals, as well as a better understanding of the characteristics of the academic community in terms of their adoption of open peer review.
