  • For the Earth observation satellite for ISR mission, a satellite constellation can be utilized to observe a specific area periodically and ultimately increase the effectiveness of the mission. The Walker-Delta method was applied to design constellation orbits with four satellites, which could detect abnormal activities in AoI(Area of Interest). To evaluate the effectiveness of the mission, a revisiting time was selected as a key requirement. This paper presents the mission analysis process for four SAR satellites constellation as well as the result of constellation configuration design to meet the requirements. Figure of Merits analysis was performed based on algorithm developed. Finally, it was confirmed that the constellation orbit with four different orbital planes is likely to be appropriate for ISR mission.

  • The optimized flight path planning which is appropriate for UAV operation with high performance and multiplex sensors is required for efficient ISR missions. Furthermore, a mission visualization tool is necessary for the assessment of MoE(Measures of Effectiveness) prior to mission operation and the urgent tactical decision in peace time and wartime. A mission visualization and analysis tool was developed by combining STK and MATLAB, whose tool was used for UAV ISR mission analyses in this study. In this mission analysis tool, obstacle avoidance and FoM(Figure of Merit) analysis algorithms were applied to enable the optimized mission planning.

  • The strategic UAV for theater level ISR(Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) mission typically has numerous ground targets over area of responsibility(AOR) or area of operation(AO). It is necessary to automatically incorporate these multitude of ground targets into mission planning process in order to collect ISR images before actual flight mission. In addition, weather information such as wind direction and/or velocity may have significant impacts on the qualities of collected sensor images, especially in SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) images. Thus weather factors in the operation altitude should also be considered in the mission planning stage. In this study, we propose a novel mission planning scheme based on target scheduling and deviation correction method incorporating weather factors.

  • Autonomous system for UAVs has a capability to decide an appropriate current action to achieve the goal based on the ultimate mission goal, context of mission, and the current state of the UAV. We propose a decision-making system that has an ability to operate ISR mission autonomously under the realistic limitation such as low altitude operation with high risk of terrain collision, a set of way points without change of visit sequence not allowed, and position uncertainties of the objects for the mission. The proposed decision-making system is loaded to a Hardware-In-the-loop Simulation environment, then tested and verified using three representative scenarios with a realistic mission environment. The flight trajectories of the UAV and selected actions via the proposed decision-making system are presented as the simulation results with discussion.

  • In an complicated battlefield environment, information from enemy's camp is an important factor in carrying out military operations. For obtaining this information, the number of UAVs that can be deployed to the mission without our forces' loss and at low cost is increasing. Because the mission environment has anti-aircraft weapons, mission space is needed for UAV to guarantee survivability without being killed. The concept of Configuration Space is used to define the mission space considering with range of weapons and detect range of UAV. UAV must visit whole given area to obtain the information and perform Coverage Path Planning for this. Based on threats to UAV and importance of information that will be obtained, area that UAV should visit first is defined. Grid Map is generated and mapping threat information to each grid for UAV path planning. On this study, coverage conditions and path planning procedures are presented based on the threat information on Grid Map, and mission space is expanded to improve detection efficiency. Finally, simulations are performed, and results are presented using the suggested UAV path planning method in this study.

  • As Unmanned Aerial Vehicles technology has been widespread, various types of unmanned aircraft and mission equipment have been developed in line with mission diversification. Especially in Korea, small unmanned aerial vehicles have been actively developed. In addition, flight control system and mission equipment interface system for effective control of small unmanned aerial vehicles, efficient communication system configuration and operation for transmission to ground operated systems by processing data are required. This paper addresses efficient system structure and operation of communication equipment for missions and control of small unmanned aerial vehicles.

  • One of the major advancements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is the use of Internet of Drones (IoD), which combines the Internet of Things (IoT) and drone technology. IoD technology is especially important for efficiently and economically operating C4ISR operations in actual battlefields supporting various combat situations. The purpose of this study is to solve the problems of limited battery capacity of drones and lack of budgeting criteria for military drone transcription, introduction, and operation. If the mission area is defined and corresponding multi-drone hovering check points and mission completion time limits are set, then an energy and time co-optimized scheduling and operation control scheme is needed. Because such a scheme does not exist, in this paper, a Drone Force Deployment Optimization (DFDO) scheme is proposed to help schedule multi-drone operation scheduling and networked based remote multi-drone control.

  • Currently, one of the main purposes of the military using Unmanned Air System (VAS) is to perform surveillance and reconnaissance of hostile enemy. To carry out their mission, Unmanned aerial vechicle (UAV) transmits video images to ground control station using ISR devices installed on the UAV. After receiving the images, the ground control station distribute them to various type of users. At this case, it is important to keep QoS. This paper presents data delivery and QoS managements using DDS for DDS for UAV video images. The experiment result, based on H.264 and JPEG2000, shows that DDS standard is able to be applied to video image transmission for UAS.

  • Continuous space development increases the occurrence probability of space hazards such as collapse of a satellite and collision between a satellite and space debris. In Korea, a space surveillance network with optical system has been developed; however, the radar technology for an independent space surveillance needs to be secured. Herein, an L-band phased array radar system for the detection and tracking of space objects is proposed to provide a number of services including collision avoidance and the prediction of re-entry events. With the mission analysis of space surveillance and the case analysis of foreign advanced radar systems, the radar parameters are defined and designed. The proposed radar system is able to detect a debris having a diameter of 10 cm at a maximum distance of 1,576 km. In addition, we confirmed the possibility of using the space surveillance mission for domestic satellites through the analysis of the detection area.

  • In the process of acquiring information through the cyber ISR (Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance) and research into the agent to help decision-making, periodic communication between the C&C (Command and Control) server and the agent may not be possible. In this case, we have studied how to effectively surveillance and reconnaissance. Due to the network configuration, agents planted on infiltrated computers can not communicate seamlessly with C&C servers. In this case, the agent continues to collect data continuously, and in order to analyze the collected data within a short time in When communication is possible with the C&C server, it can utilize limited resources and time to continue its mission without being discovered. This research shows the superiority of incremental learning method over batch method through experiments. At an experiment with the restricted memory of 500 mega bytes, incremental learning method shows 10 times decrease in learning time. But at an experiment with the reuse of incorrectly classified data, the required time for relearn takes twice more.
