  • MPEG-V(ISO/IEC 23005) standardizes normative sensory effects metadata and sensory devices command for adapting the sensory effects between the virtual world and the real world. MPEG-V(Virtual) standardization has been carried out by 3DG(Dimensional Graphics) ad-hoc group inside MPEG Working Group(ISO IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11). For the scent effect, one of the sensory effects within MPEG-V, we proposed an olfactory interaction model including electronic nose and scent display to the ad-hoc group. Recently, we proposed types and elements related to the electronic nose as a sensor defined in MPEG-V standard for olfactory interaction. At the 114th MPEG meeting, the types and elements were consequently reflected on MPEG-V CD(Committee Draft) 4th edition. In this paper, we implement an electronic nose system applicable to MPEG-V standard by using MPEG-V schema, encoder, and decoder in order to assess their adequacy.

  • Immersive multimedia comprising metadata for five senses can provide user experience by stimulating memory and sensation. In the case of olfactory-enhanced multimedia, a computer-generated smell is combined with additional media content to create a richer and/or more realistic experience for the user. Although several studies have been conducted on olfactory-enhanced multimedia using e-nose and olfactory display, their practical applications have been severely restricted owing to the absence of a related standard. This paper proposes a method to standardize odor metadata obtained from an e-nose system, which has been particularly used to acquire data from different coffee aromas. Subsequently, the data were transferred to an odor display applicable for olfactory-enhanced multimedia using the ISO/IEC 23005 (MPEG-V) data template.

  • In this paper, a sensory effect authoring tool is introduced to effectively generate sensory effect metadata for sensible media. Sensible media manifests sensory effects in the media to real world by stimulating sensory organs of human. It is emerging as a new media to enhance the user's immersion towards media. For the successful deployment of the sensible media industry, an effective authoring tool is required to provide easy authoring of sensory effect metadata. The result of the authoring tool design and development based on MPEG-V(ISO/IEC 23005-3) International Standard is presented in this paper.

  • Realistic media comprised of metadata of the five senses to provide enhanced experiences by stimulating our memory and sensations have had an increasingly pervading effect in our daily lives. Many researchers and companies are in the process of developing their own authoring systems running on different platforms to serve realistic media, resulting in compatibility issues among the systems. To tackle these issues, the International Organization for Standardization have standardized the interface, data format, protocol, API, etc. required to provide the realistic media. In particular, the ISO/IEC 23005 standard, which is called MPEG-V in SC29/WG 11, has defined XML schemas for olfaction interaction based on electronic nose (E-Nose), and scent display. In this paper, the MPEG-V standard for olfaction interaction is reviewed, and a data flow diagram that can be used for olfactory interaction based on the MPEG-V standard was designed. In addition, the necessary schemas related to the E-Nose sensor for olfactory interaction was provided.

  • This paper explains about the structure of multiple sensorial media application format (ISO/IEC 23000-17), which is newly standardized as a project of MPEG-A. This format facilitates effective storage, playing, and management of media with multiple sensorial effects. The ISO base media file format from MPEG-4 Part 12 and sensory effect metadata (SEM) from MPEG-V Part 3 are used to composed the multiple sensorial media application format. In this paper, a fragmentation method to break a SEM XML document into valid SEM samples is presented. Several binarization methods to compress the SEM samples are compared and evaluated as well. The compression ratio and processing time using the MPEG-V binary representation and the Binary MPEG format for XML (BiM) are superior to the gzip compression.

  • This paper introduces a system to reproduce the olfactory effect using the MPEG-V (ISO / IEC 23005) standard to verify the reliability of the fragrance used in the olfactory experiment Using the implemented system, with experiment participant wearing HMD(Head Mounted Display), we carried out one-to-one matching of aroma and scent object images, matching images of aroma and many scent objects, matching of aroma and fragrance object images, and analyzing distance preference. The results of the experiment showed that aroma of coffee, cocoa, banana, and peach aroma is suitable scent for testing. In case of coffee aroma with high matching accuracy, 10 ~ 20cm distance between smell and participant was more effective in image matching than 30cm. In the future, we can conduct the olfactory research for enhancing the sense of immersion and presence of virtual reality contents using the selected fragrance.

  • The Internet of Things can offer disabled people the assistance and support, which is essential to achieve a good quality of life. The visually impaired people need assistance in finding locations, detecting obstacles on the way, and getting directions while moving around to reach their destination. Based on this persistent need, this paper proposes a navigation system for blind people using Internet of Things. The technologies used in our proposed system are: a smart cane containing an RFID reader and an ultrasonic sensor, a smart phone and Internet. The sensed data from the ultrasonic sensor for detecting obstacle is converted to International Standard format from ISO/IEC 23005-5 (MPEG-V Part 5). The system detects the blind person's location using the RFID tags implemented on the way. The system uses voice message in the smart phone to communicate with the blind person to lead him to his destination. The proposed system has been tested to navigate successfully in the campus.

2007년 10월 82차 MPEG회의에 처음 제안된 RoSE프레임워크는 SE(sensory effects), USP(user sensory preferences), SDC(sensory device capabilities), SDCom(sensory device commands)의 표준아이템이 상호 연동하는 시스템 구조를 갖는다.

  • A sensible media simulation system for automobiles is introduced to open up new possibilities for an in-car entertainment system. In this paper, the system architecture is presented, which includes a virtuality-to-reality adaptation scheme. Standard data schemes for context and control information from the International Standard MPEG-V (ISO/IEC 23005) are introduced to explain the details of data formats, which are interchangeable in the system. A sensible media simulator and the implementation of a sensory device are presented to prove the effectiveness of the proposed system. Finally, a correlation between learning styles and sensory effects (that is, wind and vibration effects) is statistically analyzed using the proposed system. The experiment results show that the level of satisfaction with the sensory effects is unaffected overall by the learning styles of the test subjects. Stimulations by vibration effects, however, generate more satisfaction in people with a high tactile perception level or a low visual perception level.
