PROPERTIES OF OH/IR STARS WITH THE IRAS LRS SPECTRA

  • 1607 OH/IR stars associated with IRAS sources are assembled and the IRAS LRS spectra of 980 OH/IR stars are examined in this paper. The nature of the circumstellar dust for these sources is classified. The distributions of these subgroups of OH/IR stars in the IRAS color-color diagram and the period-color diagram are interpreted with their evolutionary status. The Galactic and the velocity distributions of these subgroups of OH/IR stars are also presented. The correlations among the expanding velocities of the envelopes, colors, periods and the pumping efficiencies for subgroups of OH/IR stars are investigated to outline the evolutionary status of OH/IR stars.

Studies on the Quality of Korean Rice (한국쌀의 품질에 관한 연구)

  • The rice qualities including cooking and eating qualities were studied using recommended Korean rice varieties (20 of japonica and 3 of indies type; IR 667) which were grown at Suwon, Korea in 1971. As the result, followings were obtained. 1. Amylose contents of white rice were varied with the varieties 21.1 to 25.5% and the average was 23.0%. Three indica type varieties (IR 667) showed higher amylose contents than the other japonica type varieties except Mankyung. Among japonica type varieties, Palkum, Mankyung composed the group of the highest amyloes content and Kimmaje was the lowest. 2. Blue values were distributed in the range of 0.38 to 0.48 and the average was 0.42 IR 667 varieties showed the highest blue value among them. Among japonica type varieties, Jaegun showd the highest blue value and Sooseung, Shirogane showed successively lower values, Shin #2, Nongbaik, Palkweng, Suwon #82, Mankyung, Nonglim #25 and Nongkwang relatively lower blue values. 3. Alkali numbers were in the range of 6.0 to 7.4 and the average was 6.8. Much difference was not shown in alkali number between IR 667 group and the japonica varieties group. 4. Gelatinization temperature were ranged from 59.5 to 64.0 IR 667 varieties showed relatively higher gelatinization temperature than japonica type varieties. 5. Water uptake ratios were measured in the range of 2.67 to 2.92 and the average was 2.79. IR 667 varieties were belonged to the group of highest water uptake ratio. Among japonica type varieties Kimmaje, Suwon #82, Nonglim #29, Deungpan #5, Jaegun, Jinhung, were belonged to the group of relatively high water uptake ratio and Palkweng, Palkeum and Paldal to the relatively low water uptake ratio. 6. Expaned volums were ranged from 29.8 to 33.7 and the average was 31.8. IR 667 varieties showed higher expanded volumes than japonica type varieties. 7. Intensities of starch-iodine blue value of residual liquid indicated 0.35 to 0.58. Among them IR 667 varieties showed relatively high intensities. 8. The range of total solids in residual liquids was 0.605 to 0.810 and the average was 0.700 Much difference was not shown in total solids in residual liquid between IR 667 varieties and japonica varieties. 9. pH values of residual liquids were in the range of 6.3 to 7.3 and the average was 6.95. IR 667 varieties showed lower pH than japonira type varieties.

Sensitivity analysis of satellite-retrieved SST using IR data from COMS/MI

  • Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is the temperature close to the ocean's surface and affects the Earth's atmosphere as an important parameter for the climate circulation and change. The SST from satellite still has biases from the error in specifying retrieval coefficients from either forward modeling or instrumental biases. So in this paper, we performed sensitivity analysis using input parameter of the SST to notice that the SST is most affected among the input parameter. We used Infrared (IR) data from the Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS)/Meteorological Imager (MI) from April 2011 to March 2012. We also used the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) correction to quality of the IR data from COMS. SST was calculated by substituting the input parameters; IR data with or without the GSICS correction. The results of this sensitivity analysis, the SST was sensitive from -0.0403 to 0.2743 K when the IR data were changed by the GSICS corrections.

The Suppression Effect of Garcinia Mangostana L. Pericarp Extract on Cerebral Neovascularization in Type 2 Diabetic Mellitus Rats

  • Mangosteen peel extract is a xanthone group, that plays an important role in anti-angiogenesis. This study investigated mangosteen peel extract on cerebral neovascularization in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) rats. This study used 36 rats, randomized into six groups: C1 (negative control); C2 (high fat diet (HFD) and mangosteen peel extract at 200 mg/kg BW); C3 (HFD and diabetic); E1, E2, and E3 (HFD, diabetic, and extract at 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW respectively). All groups were measured body mass index (BMI), homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and β cell function (HOMA-B), and histopathological feature of cerebral vascular (CV). There were significant differences in BMI, HOMA-IR, HOMA-B, and the mean number of CV (all p < 0.05) among treatment groups. E1-3 groups had a significantly lower level of blood glucose and HOMA-IR, and a higher level of HOMA-B and BMI (all p < 0.05) which tends to reduce cerebral neovascularization. HOMA-IR independently had a positive effect to induce neovascularization of CV (p < 0.05, R2 = 26.8%). These findings suggested that mangosteen peel extract increased β-cell function sensitivity, and effectively suppressed insulin resistance, BMI, and cerebral neovascularization process in type 2 DM rats.

  • With the current surge in leisure sports activities involving firearms and the costly shooting practices in the military, there's a growing interest in using virtual reality as a cost-effective alternative. This study proposes a system that addresses the drawbacks of existing shooting practice setups, such as dim spaces and high installation costs, by making it feasible on large display screens. The system integrates IR receivers and guns for practice, ensuring usability and efficiency through an application. Additionally, an accuracy adjustment feature enhances precise coordination recognition. As a result, this cyber light gun system offers an affordable solution for outdoor training.

  • For electrolysis process using an insoluble electrode, electrochemical performance was greatly affected by the manufacturing method and procedure, such as the firing temperature, pre-treatment, type of precursor solution, coating method, electrode material, etc. Components of the electrode therein is one of the most important factors in electrochemical reaction. To achieve such characteristics, a appropriate ratio of the electrode material should be carefully chosen. The aim of this research was to apply experimental design method in the optimization of electrode component for the maximum generation of oxidants in electrochemical oxidation process. Mixture design, especially expanded simplex lattice design, in DOME (design of mixture experiments) with Design Expert - commercial software - was used to analyze the data. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a high coefficient of determination ($R^2$) value of 0.9470, thus ensuring a satisfactory adjustment of the $3^{rd}$ order special cubic regression model with the experimental data. The application of response surface methodology (RSM) yielded the following regression equation, which is an empirical relationship between the TRO generation concentration and independent variables(mol ratio of 3 electrode components) in a real unit: TRO generation concentration $(mg/L)=TRO\;conc.=98.25{\times}[Ir]+49.71{\times}[Sn]+95.29{\times}[Sb]-16.91{\times}[Ir]{\times}[Sn]-29.47{\times}[Ir]{\times}[Sb]-22.65{\times}[Sn]{\times}[Sb]+703.19{\times}[Ir]{\times}[Sn]{\times}[Sb]$. The optimized formulation of the 3 component electrode for an high TRO (total residual oxidants) generation was acquired at mol ratio of Ir 0.406, Sn 0.210, Sb 0.384 (desirability d value, 1).

Effect of Salinity on Lignin and Hydroxycinnamic Acid Contents in Rice

  • The lignin contents between IR-29 and Pokkali were not significantly different in the absence of NaCl, but they were slightly increased at 40 mM NaCl. Although lignin contents were not relatively significantly different between salt treated and control plants, the total yields of alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation ranged from 17.4-20.0 mg/g of cell wall residue at 40 mM NaCl were significantly different compared with control plants (11.8-12.2 mg/g). The total amounts of ester-linked hydroxycin-namic acids in IR-29 were decreased from 14.5 to 9.9mg/g, while Pokkali is almost same levels (14.9-15.0 mg/g) under treated and control with 40 mM NaCl. In contrast, the total amounts of ether-linked hydroxycinnamic acids were increased from 9.4 to 13.9 mg/g together with an opposite trend in Pokkali as a decrease 10.9 to 8.8 mg/g under treated and control with 40 mM NaCl. These results revealed that IR-29 is more sensitive in response to 40 mM NaCl in terms of hydroxycinnamic acids than Pokkali.

Studies on the Effect of Temperature During the Reduction Division and the Grain Filling Stage in Rice Plants II. Effect of Air Temperature at the Grain Filling Stage in Indica-Japonica Crosses (수도의 감수분열기 및 등숙기에 있어서 온도반응에 관한 연구 제2보 수도 Indica$\times$Japonica 품종의 등숙기에 있어서의 온도반응)

  • The effects of air temperature on the grain filling stage of indica-japonica crosses were studied in artificial temperature-controlled cabinets, using Indica-Japonica crosses (Suweon 264, Suweon 258 and Milyang 29), Indica IR 36 and Lengkwang) and a Japonica rice (Jinheung). The optimum temperature to achieve maximum grain weight during the grain-filling stage was $26/18^{\circ}C$ for all varieties. Within the temperature range of 13 to $28^{\circ}C$, the grain filling period was shorter as the temperature was increased. At the highest temperature $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ the upper-position grains ("special spikelets") of IR 36 required 13days after flowering to reach the maximum weight, in Jinheung 23 days, in indica-japonica varieties (Suweon 264, Suweon 258, and MiIyang 29) 18 days, and in Lengkwang, 23 days. In the case of Lengkwang, at $32/24, \;29/21^{\circ}C$ and $26/18^{\circ}C$temperature range the upper-position grain also required same 23 days after flowering to reach the maximum weight. At the lowest temperature range of $17/9^{\circ}C$, Jinheung required 68 days and Lengkwang 53 days after flowering to reach maximum grain weight. The whole panicle took 10 to 15 days later than the special spikelets to reach the maximum weight. At lower-than-optimum temperature range $(l7/9^{\circ}C\;and\;20/12^{\circ}C)$, all IR 36 plant died within 15 days after flowering. In the case of indica-japonica varieties all plants died within 15 days only at $17/9^{\circ}C$. There were more chalky grains when the temperature was higher and lower than optimum. The highest and lowest temperature range produced dead rice (black and dark red rice). Lower than optimum temperature ranges $(17/9^{\circ}C\;and\;20/12^{\circ}C)$ affected grain quality (length, width and depth) at these temperature ranges, grains were shorter, narrower, and thinner than grains at the optimum temperature of $26/18^{\circ}C$. With regared and the effects of temperature on frequency of grain weight at grain filling stage of indica variety IR 36, the highest $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ and lowest $(23/15^{\circ}C)$ temperature ranges matched the frequency of grain weight curves. In Japonica variety Jinheung, at the three temperature ranges, that is, lowest $(17/9^{\circ}C)$ highest $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ and optimum $(26/18^{\circ}C)$, the frequency of grain weight curve showed very different patterns, In the case of indica-japonica variety Suweon 258, the frequency of grain weight curve was midway between that of IR 36 and Jinheung.   • The present study develops a method for directly measuring the temperature field in the primary deformation zone with a high spatial resolution during 2-D orthogonal machining. This is enabled by the use of a high-speed, charge-coupled device (CCD) based, infra-red (IR) imaging system which allows characteristics of the temperature field such as the location and magnitude of the highest temperature and temperature gradient in the primary deformation zone to be identified. Based on these data, the relation between the machining temperature and the cutting conditions is investigated.
