Femtosecond Laser Application to PLC Optical Devices and Packaging

  • Using tightly focused femtosecond laser pulses, we produce an optical waveguide and devices in transparent materials. This technique has the potential to generate not only channel waveguides, but also three-dimensional optical devices. In this paper, an optical splitter and U-grooves, which are used for fiber alignment, are simultaneously fabricated in a fused silica glass using near-IR femtosecond laser pulses. The fiber- aligned optical splitter has a low insertion loss, less than 4 dB, including an intrinsic splitting loss of 3 dB and excess loss due to the passive alignment of a single-mode fiber. Finally, we present an output field pattern, demonstrating that the splitting ratio of the optical splitter becomes approximately 1:1.

  • Atmospheric pressure- plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(AP-PECVD)Processes are recognized as promising and cost effective methods for wide-area coating on sheets of steel, glass, polymeric web, etc. In this study, $SiO_xC_y$ thin films were deposited by using AP-PECVD with a dielectric barrier discharge(DBD). The characteristic of $SiO_xC_y$ thin films were investigated as afunction of the HMDSO/O2/He flow rate. And the moisture permeability of $SiO_xC_y$ thin films was studied. The $SiO_xC_y$ thin films were characterized by the Fourier-transformed Infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy and also investigated by X-ray photo electron spectroscopy(XPS), Auger Electron Spectroscopy(AES). The moisture permeability of $SiO_xC_y$ thin films was investigated by $H_2O$ permeability tester Detailed experimental results will be demonstrated through th present work.

  • A theoretical and experimental study was conducted in order to design highly efficient solar air heaters using porous material. Radiative characteristics of glass windows and porous absorbing media were correlated through spectral transmittances measured by the UV-Visible and the FT-IR spectrometers. Using those characteristics the efficiencies of collectors were numerically calculated with the use of the two-flux radiation model. Based on the theoretical results, an experimental solar collector was designed and constructed. Experimental results under various conditions show that the daily efficiencies are over 60% in general and agree well with the theoretically calculated ones.

  • The polymerization of 4, 4-bis(acetoxymethyl)-1, 6-heptadiyne (BAH) was carried out by MoCl5 and WCl6 with various organometallic cocatalysts. MoCl5-based catalysts were more effective than WCl6-based ones for the cyclopolymerization of BAH. Poly(BAH) was characterized to have polymer backbone with conjugated double bond and cyclic structure by IR, UV-visible, and 1H-and 13C NMR spectroscopies. The polymer was stable up to 310 ℃ and 5 % weight loss show up at 350 ℃. The resulting dark violet polymer exhibited good solubility in common organic solvents and could be cast on a glass plate to give film with good mechanical properties. It was found that oxygen permeability (PO2) and permselectivity (PO2/PN2) of the resulting polymer were 15.2 barrer and 2.84, respectively.

The Effect of Processing Variables on Structural Changes and Optical Properties of $SiO_2-TiO_2$ Sol-Gel Derived Films

  • The structural evolution during the thermal treatment of $70SiO_2-3OTiO_2(mole%)$ sol-gel derived powders and films was investigated by FT-IR, Raman and XPS, and XRD. From these results, the $TiO_2-rich$ regions involving $Ti^{4+}$ ions in octahedral coordination were confirmed to be amorphous at $600^{\circ}C$. However, Raman spectra along with XRD patterns indicated that at high temperature (above $700^{\circ}C)$, the amorphous $TiO_2was$ segregating to form anatase crystal. Also, the effect of experimental variables such as thermal treatment, heating rate and exposure to water vapor on structural changes, refractive index and thickness of the film coated on sodalime-silicate glass were investigated.

Preparation and Characterization of Sol-Gel Derived $SiO_2-TiO_2$ -PDMS Composite Films

  • Thin films of the SiO2-TiO2-PDMS composite material have been prepared by the sol-gel dip coating method. Acid catalyzed solutions of tetraethoxy silane (TEOS) and polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) mixed with titanium isopropoxide Ti(OiPr) were used as precursors. The optical and structural properties of the organically modified 70SiO2-30TiO2 composite films have been investigated with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and prism coupling technique. The films coated on the soda-lime-silicate glass exhibit 450-750 nm thickness, 1.56-1.68 refractive index and 88-94% transmittance depending on the experimental parameters such as amount of PDMS, thermal treatment and heating rate. The optical loss of prepared composite film was measured to be about 0.34 dB/cm.

Property Comparison of Bio-Polyurethane and Petroleum based Polyurethane (바이오 폴리우레탄과 석유기반 폴리우레탄의 물성 비교)

  • The three polyols, poly(trimethylene ether) glycol 2000, poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol 2000 and poly (tetramethylene ether) glycol 1000 were reacted with 4,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate to get polyurethanes. The synthesized three polyurethanes were measured by FT-IR, NMR for investigating chemical structures. Through two spectroscophical methods, It is found that urethane group exists in the three polymers. From the evaluation of hardness, glass transition temperature, tensile strength, and water resistance, the results showed increasing order of Poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol 1000 > Poly(trimethylene ether) glycol 2000 > Poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol 2000 with the content of hard segment in polyurethane.

Optoelectronic properties of the Metal-dielectric complex thin films for applying high sensitivity IR image sensors (고감도 적외선 이미지 센서 적용을 위한 금속-유전체 복합 박막의 광전자 특성)

  • High sensitivity IR image sensors require materials characteristics with temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and IR range absorption. In this study, the metal-dielectric thermo sensitive films (MDTF) based on $(SiO_2)_x-(Ti)_y$ composition were deposited on substrates of germanium and glass by thermal evaporator. The $SiO_2$ : Ti mixture was made from the ratio of 9 : 1, 8 : 2, 7 : 3, 6 : 4, respectively. $(SiO_2)_x-(Ti)_y$ mixture powder was loaded on tungsten boat in evaporator and was 15.5 cm from the substrate. Resistance of $(SiO_2)_x-(Ti)_y$ in the range of 273~333K were measured as a function of temperature. Temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) was calculated by the resistance variation. Under the various mixture ratios condition, it is possible to obtain $SiO_2$-Ti layers with resistance from units kilo-ohm to hundreds kilo-ohm. Finally, our results showed that Temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of these films varies from -1.4 to $-2.6%K^{-1}$.

Fabrication of ATO thin film for IR-cut off by sol-gel method (솔-젤 법에 의한 적외선 차단 ATO 박막 제조)

  • IR cut-off thin films consisted of ATO nanoparticles were successfully fabricated by sol-gel method. The coating solution was synthesized with organic/inorganic hybrid binder and ATO colloidal solution and ATO thin films were coated on a slide glass with the withdrawal speed of 5~40 mm/s. As the withdrawal speed increased from 5 mm/s to 40 mm/s, the thickness of coating thin films also increased from $1.05{\mu}m$ to $4.25{\mu}m$ and the IR cut-off in wavelength of 780~2500 nm increased from 49.5 % to 66.7 %. In addition, the pencil hardness of ATO thin films dried at $80^{\circ}C$ was ca. 5H and the coating films were not removed after a cross cutter tape test because of the hybrid binder synthesized with tetraethylorthosilicate and methyltrimethoxysilane. The surface morphologies, optical properties and film thickness of prepared thin films with a different withdrawal speed were measured by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and Dektak.

Properties of Sunglass Lenses by Non-Destructive Test for the Sunglass Standards (비파괴식 검사를 통한 선글라스의 품질에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we compared the properties of 23 high and 55 low price sunglass lenses with the standards in the ordinary optical properties, materials, coloration, UV, IR and luminous transmittance, color acceptance for traffic signal, chromaticity and contrast sensitivity. The ordinary optical properties of the lenses met comparatively the requirements of the KS standard. The HIGH-type and LOW-type lenses were primarily made by glass and acrylate, respectively. In the coloration, HIGH-type was in group around neutral color but LOW-type was distributed widely on the line between 570 nm and 485 nm. There are fails in 7% of HIGH-type and 18% of LOW-type in the stimulus purity of the luminous transmittance. Wavelength of the UV/VIS cut-off was over 350 nm for HIGH-type but 6% of LOW-type was under 350 nm. In the erythemal UV, all HIGH-type met the needs of standards but 5 LOW-type failed with DIN standard In the near UV, KS standard worked in stringency, and HIGH-type showed more failure than LOW-type. The characteristics of the IR transmittance of HIGH-type was better than that of LOW-type. In the color acceptance of traffic signal, all HIGH-type met the needs of ANSI standards but 21.8% of LOW-type failed with the standard. In the contrast sensitivity tested with various coloured sunglasses, the value increased with increasing of Land decreasing of test distance. In view of the results so far, HIGH-type met with excellent properties as compared with LOW-type.
