PURPOSE. In this study, three bioceramic materials, [IPS Empress CAD (Ivoclar), IPS e.max CAD (Ivoclar), and Lava Ultimate CAD (3M ESPE)] were treated with three commercial mouthrinses [Listerine, Tantum Verde, and Klorhex]; and changes in colour reflectance and surface roughness values were then quantitatively assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One hundred and twenty ceramic samples, with dimensions of $2{\times}12{\times}14mm$, were prepared and divided into nine sample groups, except three control samples. The samples were immersed in the mouthrinse solutions for 120 hrs, and changes in colour reflectance and surface roughness values were measured by UV light spectrophotometry (Vita Easyshade; VITA Zahnfabrik) and by profilometer device (MitutoyoSurftest SJ-301), respectively. The change of surface roughness was inspected by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). RESULTS. There was a positive correlation between the ${\Delta}E$ and increase in the surface roughness. Two of the ceramic materials, IPS Empress and Lava Ultimate, were affected significantly by the treatment of the mouthrinse solutions (P<.05). The most affecting solution was Tantum Verde and the most affected material was Lava Ultimate. As expected, the most resistant material to ${\Delta}E$ and chemical corrosion was IPS e max CAD among the materials used. CONCLUSION. This work implied that mouthrinse with lower alcohol content had less deteriorating effect on colour and on the surface morphology of the bioceramic materials.
Simulation of naturally appearing enamel in fixed prosthodontics could be achieved with all ceramics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the stain resistance of 4 different all ceramics materials (In-ceram, IPS Empress, Celay, Vintage). Forty specimens were prepared using manifacture's instruction and the samples were divided into two groups. The specimens for one group were glazing and those for other group were ground to remove the glazing layer. All specimens were immersed in methylene-blue for 24hours. The color values for each specimen was measured with colorimeter (Mode Tc-6Fx, Tokyo Denshoku Co.) prior to and after immersion in methylene-blue. The following conclusions were drawn from this study. 1 The stain resistance of glazing ceramics was higher than that of unglazing ceramics. 2. The changes of ${\Delta}E^*$\;and\;L^*$ values were revealed in Vintage and unglazing Celay. 3. The changes of $a^*$ values were revealed in unglazing vintage, Celay, In-ceram. 4. The changes of $b^*$ value were revealed in Vintage, IPS Empress and unglazing Celay.

Statement of problem: All-ceramic restorations have been advocated for superior esthetics. Various post and core systems have been used to improve the strength of damaged teeth, but it is unclear whether they affect the final shade of finished all-ceramic restorations. Purpose: The influence of different types of post and core systems on light transmission through all-ceramic crowns was assessed by spectrophotometric analysis. Also the masking effect of different thickness of ceramic ingot was evaluated. Material and Methods : Forty-five sample disks (15mm in diameter) at several thickness(1.0, 1.5, 2.0mm) and value(shade 100, 200, 300) were made in heat pressed ceramic(IPS-Empress). Background specimens simulating gold-alloy cast posts(Type III casting gold alloy), metal posts(Ni-Cr casting alloy) and ceramic posts(CosmoPost) were fabrica-ted. Resin composite(Z250, A3 shade) was used as a tooth substrate reference. For each combination, the change in color was measured with a spectrophotometer. Readings were performed for 2 conditions (1) ability of ceramic to mask the core in relation to its thickness(1.0, 1.5, or 2.0mm) ; (2) influence of post and core types on the final color of the ceramic. Data were recorded according to the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ systems and color difference($\Delta$E) was calculated. Results: 100 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post larger than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 2. 200 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post was smaller than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5 mm, only the $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. 300 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2 and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. Conclusion: The final esthetic result of the IPS-Empress glass-ceramic restoration was not affected by the presence of different core materials when the thickness was more than 2.0 mm. When ceramic thickness decreases to 1.5mm, it is advised to take the substrate aspects into consideration. If the ceramic thickness is less than 1.0mm, using the tooth color matched substrate is strongly recommended.

This study investigated the compressive fracture strength of Targis ceromer crown by the difference of occlusal thickness on a maxillary first premolar. Control group was a castable IPS-Empress all-ceramic crown with occlusal thickness of 1.5 mm constructed by layered technique. Experimental groups were Targis crowns having different occlusal thicknesses of 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, 2.5 mm, respectively. The classification of Targis group is T10, T15, T20, T25 and T15N (for no-thermocycling and occlusal thickness of 1.5mm). Ten samples were tested per each group. Except occlusal thickness, all dimension of metal die is same with axial inclination of $10^{\circ}$and marginal width 0.8mm chamfer. All crowns were cemented with Panavia F and thermocycled 1,000 times between $5^{\circ}$ and $55^{\circ}$ water bath with 10 sec dwelling time and 10 sec resting time. The compressive fracture strength was measured by universal testing machine. The results were as follows : 1. Fracture strength was increased as the occlusal thickness increased : compressive fracture strength of Group T10, T15, T20, T25 was $66.65{\pm}4.88kgf$, $75.04{\pm}3.01kgf$, $87.07{\pm}7.06kgf$ and $105.03{\pm}10.56kgf$, respectively. 2. When comparing material, Targis crown had higher fracture strength than IPS-Empress crown : the mean compressive strength of group T15 was $75.04{\pm}3.01kgf$ and the value of group Control was $37.66{\pm}4.28kgf$. 3. Fracture strength was decreased by thermocycling : the compressive fracture strength of T15 was $75.04{\pm}3.01kgf$, which is lower than $90.69{\pm}6.88kgf$ of group T15N. 4. The fracture line of crowns began at the loading point and extended along long axis of tooth. IPS-Empress showed adhesive failure pattern whereas Targis had adhesive and cohesive failure. In the SEM view, stress was distributed radially from loading point and the crack line was more prominent on Targis crown.

Statement of problem: It is not clear how to make a stable bonding between zirconia ceramic and resin cement. And the study about surface treatment of zirconia ceramic or bonding resin cement are not enough. Purpose: To measure and compare the shear bond strength of some resin cements on zirconia ceramic after different surface treatments. Material and method: 48 ceramic discs were made of 3 ceramic materials, zirconia ceramics (Zi-Ceram), heat-pressed ceramics (IPS Empress 2) and slip cast alumina ceramics (In-Ceram). According to the surface treatments of ceramic specimens and resin cements, specimens were classified into 6 groups and each group was composed of 8 specimens. For the surface treatment of Zi-Ceram group (test group), sandblasting and diamond bur preparation were applied and Superbond C&B and Panavia F were bonded respectively. For IPS Empress 2 group (control group), Variolink II was bonded after sandblasting, acid etching, silanization and for In-Ceram ALUMINA group (control group), Panavia F was bonded after sandblasting. After storing specimens in distilled water for 24 hours, the shear bond strength was measured by the universal testing machine. Results and conclusion: 1. Zi-Ceram group with Superbond C&B cement showed higher bond strength than with Panavia F cement regardless to the surface treatments (p<0.05). 2. In Zi-Ceram group with Superbond C&B cement, sandblasting treatment group (12.1MPa) showed higher bond strength than diamond bur treatment group (7.7MPa) (p<0.05). In Zi-Ceram group with Panavia F cement, there were no significant differences in the bond strength according to the surface treatments (p>0.05). 3. Zi-Ceram group with sandblasting and Superbond C&B cement (12.1MPa) showed the highest bond strength. The bond strength of this group was not significantly different from In-Ceram ALUMINA group (10.4MPa) (p>0.05) and lower than IPS Empress 2 group (15.9MPa) (p<0.05).
Statement of the problem. All-ceramic post-and-core restorations offer a number of advantages compared with systems that use metal build-ups. In certain clinical cases, however, fractures at the joint between the post and core build-up have been reported. Purpose. The objective, therefore, is to improve the joint between the post and the core build-up. Material and methods. Three different methods were used to prepare all-ceramic post-and-core restorations; pressing IPS Empress core build-ups to CosmoPost zirconia posts, cement-ing IPS Empress core build-ups to CosmoPost zirconia posts and Celay-milling of zirconia blanks. A series of ten restorations was prepared for each of the three methods. The post-and-core complexes were tested to failure with the load applied perpendicular to the post axis. The load and deflection at fracture were recorded. Results. The highest breaking load and highest deflection were recorded for the cementing technique with values of 25.3 N and $394{\mu}m$, respectively, The corresponding values for the pressed core build-ups and the milled zirconia core build-ups were 22 N and $301{\mu}m$, and 13 N and $160{\mu}m$, respectively. All the differences are statistically significant (p=0.05). Regarding the load-dependence of the deflection, the cemented core build-ups again demonstrated the highest value with $15.5{\mu}m/N$. The difference in the values of $13.6{\mu}m/N\;and\;13{\mu}m/N$ recorded for the pressed-on and milled core build-ups, respectively, were statistically insignificant. Conclusion. In regard to the high fracture resistance of zirconia post, adhesive cementing the core build-up to the post offers a viable alternative to the conventional pressing technique. The elastic bond between the rigid high-strength zirconia post and the core build-up presents an additional advantage.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of thermocycling and type of porcelain restoration on shear bond strength (SBS) and mode of failure of monocrystalline ceramic brackets. Methods: A total of 60 porcelain discs were made and divided into three equal groups as follows: Ceramco 3, IPS Empress II, Zi-ceram/Vintage ZR. ceramic brackets were bonded to the prepared porcelain surfaces in the same manner. Each group was divided randomly into two subgroups: thermocycled group and non-thermocycled group (control). All samples were tested in shear mode on an universal testing machine. Results: SBS of the non-thermocycled group was clinically acceptable (Ceramco 3: $7.06\;{\pm}\;1.76\;MPa$, IPS Empress II: $7.55\;{\pm}\;2.38\;MPa$, Zi-ceram/Vintage ZR: $7.19\;{\pm}\;1.38\;MPa$). But, SBS of the thermocycled group was significantly reduced (Ceramco 3: $4.88\;{\pm}\;1.00\;MPa$, IPS Empress II: $5.46\;{\pm}\;1.35\;MPa$, Zi-ceram/Vintage ZR: $4.84\;{\pm}\;1.01\;MPa$, p < 0.05). There was no difference between the shear bond strength by type of porcelain restoration. All bonding failure occurred between bracket base and adhesive, except for 2 samples. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the type of porcelain restoration did not affect SBS, but thermocycling weakened SBS. Therefore, the effect of thermocycling should be considered when using ceramic brackets in practice.

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of resin cements and ceramic etching on shear bond strength of Empress 2 ceramic and observe the change of microstructure of ceramic according to etching time. Sixty-six square ceramic specimens($6{\times}6{\times}1.5mm$) were prepared. 6 specimens were etched with different etching times(0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 60 seconds) and observed by means of a scanning electron microscope(SEM). Other sixty specimens were divided into 6 groups with 10 specimens in each group. 3 groups were etched with 4% hydrofluoric acid and each groups was bonded with 3 resin cements(Variolink II, Super-Bond C&B, Panavia F). Each specimen was subjected to a shear load in an Instron at a cross-head speed of 0.5mm/min and was observed with SEM after mechanical testing to establish modes of failure. The results were as follows : 1. Within etched groups, Variolink II and Super-Bond C&B exhibited significantly greater bonding strengths than Panavia F(p<0.05) 2. Bond strength of etching groups had three to five times greater than that of no-etching groups. 3. All of no-etching groups showed adhesive failure and etching groups mostly showed mixed failure. And, 20-second etching specimen showed the most distinct lithium disilicate crystal. so it is considered that 20-second etching is optimal time for bonding.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of desensitizer on shear bond strength of adhesive resin cements for all ceramic crown. For this study, Gluma $desensitizer^{(R)}$(Heraeus Kulzer, Germany) and MS $Coat^{(R)}$(Sun medical, Japan) were used as desensitizer, and Bistite $II^{(R)}$ resin cement(Tokuyama, Japan) and Variolink $II^{(R)}$ resin cement (Ivoclar, Liechtenstein) were used. IPS Empress ceramics were bonded to dentin surfaces after application of desensitizer and shear bond strength of specimens were measured using UTM(Zwick 1456 41. Zwick, Germany) at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength of both resin cements were not affected by Gluma $desensitizer^{(R)}$ containing HEMA 2. The shear bond strength of Bistite $II^{(R)}$ resin cement was significantly decreased by MS $Coat^{(R)}$. 3. The failure mode in MS $Coat^{(R)}-Bistite \;II^{(R)}$ group was mainly adhesive type between dentin and resin cement. but that of Gluma $desensitizer^{(R)}$-Variolink $II^{(R)}$ group was mainly mixed type, combined adhesive failures between dentin and resin cement or porcelain and resin cement.
A heat-pressed technique(IPS-Empress, Ivoclar) has been described to construct single unit crown, inlay/onlay and veneers using a partially pre-cerammed and pre-colored glass-leucite ingot that has the greateast strength by the combination of heat-pressed procedure through the smalldiameter sprue and heat treatment procedure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the flexure strength of a heat-pressed ceramic material(IPS-Empress) without simulated firing treatments according to pontic designs. Two groups of 9 disks(1.4mm thick, 14mm in diameter) each using two types of sprues with different diameters($({\Phi}2.8\;,{\Phi}1.8)$) and numbers were prepared. The specimens were mounted in the testing jig. The flexural strengths were determined, by means of the bi-axial bending test, by loading the center of disk to failure using a universal testing machine(Zwick 145141, Zwick, Germany) at a cross-head speed of 1.0 mm/min. The means flexural strength value of one group using a sprue with ${\Phi}2.8$ was $140.4{\pm}8.0Mpa$. That of the other group using two sprues with ${\Phi}1.8$ was $151.8{\pm}10.3Mpa$. After analysis, results showed that there was a statistical difference between groups(t=2.33m p<0.05). No clnical implications were drawn from these data because of absence of simulated firing treatment.
