The Entry-Descent-Landing process of a lander involves many environmental and technical challenges. To solve these problems, recently, terrestrial relative navigation (TRN) technology has been essential for landers. TRN is a technology for estimating the position and attitude of a lander by comparing Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data and image data collected from a descending lander with pre-built reference data. In this paper, we present a method for generating descent dataset and extracting landmarks, which are key elements for developing TRN technologies to be used on Mars. The proposed method generates IMU data of a descending lander using a simulated Mars landing trajectory and generates descent images from high-resolution ortho-map and digital elevation map through a ray tracing technique. Landmark extraction is performed by an area-based extraction method due to the low-textured surfaces on Mars. In addition, search area reduction is carried out to improve matching accuracy and speed. The performance evaluation result for the descent dataset generation method showed that the proposed method can generate images that satisfy the imaging geometry. The performance evaluation result for the landmark extraction method showed that the proposed method ensures several meters of positioning accuracy while ensuring processing speed as fast as the feature-based methods.

DSM and orthoimage, which are representative results of UAV photogrammetry, are high-quality spatial information data and are widely used in various fields of spatial information industry in recent years. However, the UAV photogrammetry has a problem that the quality of the output of the UAV deteriorates due to the altitude of the UAV, the camera calibration, the weather conditions at the time of shooting, the performance of the GPS / IMU and the number of the ground reference points. The purpose of this study is to analyze the location accuracy of unmanned aerial photogrammetry according to the change of the number if ground control points. Experiments were made with fixed wing, and the shooting altitude was set at 130m and 260m. The number of ground reference points used was 9, 8, 5, and 4, respectively. Ten checkpoints were used. XY RMSE for orthoimage and Z RMSE for DSM were compared and analyzed. In addition, the resolution of the orthoimage was determined to affect the judgment of the operator in the verification of the planimetric position accuracy, and the visual resolution was analyzed using the Siemens star target. As a result of the analysis, the variation of the vertical position accuracy is larger than the variation of the planimetric position accuracy when the number of the ground reference points are different. Also The higher the flying height, the greater the effect of change of ground control points on position accuracy.
The Mobile Mapping System is an effective method to acquire the position and image data using vehicle equipped with the GPS (Global Positioning System), IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), and CCD camera. It is used in various fields of road facility management, map update, and etc. In the general photogrammetry such as aerial photogrammetry, GCP (Ground Control Point)s are needed to compute the image exterior orientation elements (the position and attitude of camera). These points are measured by field survey at the time of data acquisition. But it costs much time and money. Moreover, it is not possible to make sufficient GCP as much as we want. However Mobile Mapping System is more efficient both in time and money because it can obtain the position and attitude of camera at the time of photographing. That is, Indirect Georeferencing must use GCP to compute the image exterior orientation elements, but on the other hand Direct Georeferencing can directly compute the image exterior orientation elements by GPS/INS. In this paper, we analyze about the positional accuracy comparison of ground point using the Direct Georeferencing and Indirect Georeferencing.

Recently, owing to the development of autonomous vehicles, research on precisely determining the position of a moving object has been actively conducted. Previous research mainly used the fusion of GNSS/IMU (Global Positioning System / Inertial Navigation System) and sensors attached to the vehicle through a Kalman filter. However, in recent years, new technologies have been used to determine the location of a moving object owing to the improvement in computing power and the advent of deep learning. Various techniques using RNN (Recurrent Neural Network), LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory), and NARX (Nonlinear Auto-Regressive eXogenous model) exist for such learning-based positioning methods. The purpose of this study is to compare the precision of existing filter-based sensor fusion technology and the NARX-based method in case of GNSS signal blockages using simulation data. When the filter-based sensor integration technology was used, an average horizontal position error of 112.8 m occurred during 60 seconds of GNSS signal outages. The same experiment was performed 100 times using the NARX. Among them, an improvement in precision was confirmed in approximately 20% of the experimental results. The horizontal position accuracy was 22.65 m, which was confirmed to be better than that of the filter-based fusion technique.
With advances in autonomous vehicles, there is a growing demand for more accurate position estimation. Especially, this is a case for a moving robot for the indoor operation which necessitates the higher accuracy in position estimation when the robot is required to execute the task at a predestined location. Thus, a method for improving the position estimation which is applicable to both the fixed and the moving object is proposed. The proposed method exploits the initial position estimation from Bluetooth beacon signals as observation signals. Then, it estimates the gravitational acceleration applied to each axis in an inertial frame coordinate through computing roll and pitch angles and combining them with magnetometer measurements to compute yaw angle. Finally, it refines the control inputs for an object with motion dynamics by computing acceleration on each axis, which is used for improving the performance of Kalman filter. The experimental assessment of the proposed algorithm shows that it improves the position estimation accuracy in comparison to a conventional Kalman filter in terms of average error distance at both the fixed and moving states.

Initial alignment and localization are important topics in inertial navigation systems, since misalignment and initial position error wholly propagate into the navigation systems and deteriorate the performance of the systems. This paper presents the error convergence characteristics of the hybrid navigation system for underwater vehicles initial position, which is based on an inertial measurement unit (IMU) accompanying a range sensor. This paper demonstrates the improvement on the navigational performance oj the hybrid system with the range information, especially focused on the convergence of the estimation of underwater vehicles initial position error. Simulations are performed with experimental data obtained from a rotating ann test with a fish model. The convergence speed and condition of the initial error removal for random initial position errors are examined with Monte Carlo simulation. In addition, numerical simulation is conducted with an AUV model in lawn-mowing survey mode to illustrate the error convergence of the hybrid navigation System for initial position error.

In this paper, vSLAM aided integrated navigation system is implemented and performance analysis of the system is completed via flight test. The system can suppress divergence of position error of INS only system by updating vSLAM correction information when temporary GPS signal outage occurs in bad radio condition. In the flight test, integrated hardware containing GPS, IMU and camera is loaded under RC electric helicopter. Performance of the integrated navigation system is verified by comparing estimated position of INS/vSLAM system with that of INS only system.
A number of techniques have been studied to estimate the position of pedestrians in indoor space. Among them, the technique of estimating the position using only the sensors attached to the body of the pedestrian without using the infrastructure is regarded as a very important technology for special purpose pedestrians such as the firefighters. In particular, it forms a research field under the name of Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR). In this paper, we focus on a method for step detection which is essential when performing PDR using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) mounted on a shoe. Many researches have been done to detect the stance phase where the foot contacts the ground. Most of these methods, however, have a way to detect the specific size of the sensor signal and require thresholds for these methods. This has the difficulty of changing these thresholds if the user is different. To solve this problem, we propose a stance phase detection method that does not require any threshold value. It is expected that this result will make it easier to commercialize the technology because PDR can be implemented without user-dependent parameter setting.
Autonomous driving systems are likely to be operated in various complex environments. However, the well-known integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)/Inertial Navigation System (INS), which is currently the major source for absolute position information, still has difficulties in accurate positioning in harsh signal environments such as urban canyons. To overcome these difficulties, integrated Visual/Inertial/GNSS (VIG) navigation systems have been extensively studied in various areas. Recently, a Compressed-State Constraint Kalman Filter (CSCKF)-based VIG navigation system (CSCKF-VIG) using a monocular camera, an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), and GNSS receivers has been studied with the aim of providing robust and accurate position information in urban areas. For this new filter-based navigation system, on the basis of time-propagation measurement fusion theory, unnecessary camera states are not required in the system state. This paper presents a performance evaluation of the CSCKF-VIG system compared to other conventional navigation systems. First, the CSCKF-VIG is introduced in detail compared to the well-known Multi-State Constraint Kalman Filter (MSCKF). The CSCKF-VIG system is then evaluated by a field experiment in different GNSS availability situations. The results show that accuracy is improved in the GNSS-degraded environment compared to that of the conventional systems.
In urban environments, signals of Global Positioning System (GPS) can be blocked and reflected by tall buildings, large vehicles, and complex components of road network. Therefore, the performance of the positioning system using the GPS module in urban areas can be degraded due to the loss of GPS signals necessary for the position estimation. To deal with this issue, various localization schemes using inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors, such as gyroscope and accelerometer, and Bayesian filters, such as Kalman filter (KF) and particle filter (PF), have been designed to enhance the performance of the GPS-based positioning system. Among Bayesian filters, the PF has been widely used for the target tracking and vehicle navigation, since it can provide superior performance in estimating the state of a dynamic system under nonlinear/non-Gaussian circumstance. This paper presents a positioning system that uses the double-stacked particle filter (DSPF) as well as the accelerometer, gyroscope, and GPS receiver on the smartphone to provide higher pedestrian positioning accuracy in urban environments. The DSPF employs a nonparametric technique (Parzen-window) to create the multimodal target distribution that approximates the posterior distribution. Experimental results show that the DSPF-based positioning system can provide the significant improvement of the pedestrian position estimation in urban environments.
