An automatic calibration tool of Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF), Parameter Estimation (PEST) program, was applied at the Imha lake watershed to get optimal hydrological parameters of HSPF. Calibration of HSPF parameters was performed during 2004 ~ 2008 by PEST and validation was carried out to examine the model's ability by using another data set of 1999 ~ 2003. The calibrated HSPF parameters had tendencies to minimize water loss to soil layer by infiltration and deep percolation and to atmosphere by evapotranspiration and maximize runoff rate. The results of calibration indicated that the PEST program could calibrate the hydrological parameters of HSPF with showing 0.83 and 0.97 Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NS) for daily and monthly stream flow and -3% of relative error for yearly stream flow. The validation results also represented high model efficiency with showing 0.88 and 0.95, -10% relative error for daily, monthly, and yearly stream flow. These statistical values of daily, monthly, and yearly stream flow for calibration and validation show a 'very good' agreement between observed and simulated values. Overall, the PEST program was useful for automatic calibration of HSPF, and reduced numerous time and effort for model calibration, and improved model setup.

Soil particles from rainfall flow into reservoir and give lots of influence In water quality because the geological conditions and landcover characteristics of imha basin have a weakness against soil loss. Especially, much soil particles induced to reservoir in shape of muddy water when it rains a lot because the geological characteristics of imha reservoir are composed of clay and shale layer. Therefore, field turbidity data can be Indirect-standards to estimate the soil erosion of imha basin. This study evaluated annual soil erosion using GIS-based RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) and developed rainfall weighting value method using time-series rainfall data to estimate monthly soil erosion. In view of field turbidity data(2003 yr), we can find out monthly soil erosion with rainfall weighting value is more efficient than that with monthly rainfall data.

The purpose of this paper is to present a strategic approach to selecting prior areas of soil erosion to be examined for effective soil conservation planning and management, in conjunction with remote sensing data and GIS skill for surface characteristics. To do this, two basins are selected: Andong and Imha basin. Geographically one is in the vicinity of the other but turbidity in the main reservoir of each basin is quite different. it is important to clarify general behavior of soil erosion driven by rainfall event for both basins for further understanding and effective soil conservation planning and management. Also, Both basins are divided into several sub-basins and the severity of soil loss is intensively investigated to identify areas with high erosion potential for each sub-basin so that the efficiency of soil conservation program may increase. Especially, this study analyzed soil erodibility factor(K), topographic factor(LS), cover management factor(C) and soil erosion; 3 sub-basins for Andong basin (up-, mid-, downstream) and 6 sub-basins for Imha basin (up-, mid-, and downstream for two tributaries) because Imha basin consists of two tributaries (Banyeon and Yongjeon river). The approach suggested herein will provide a guideline for choosing prior areas to be examined and managed for soil conservation planning.

The quality of water released from a stratified reservoir is dependent on various factors such as the location and shape of intake facility, structure of reservoir stratification, profile of water quality constituent, and withdrawal flux. Sometimes, selective withdrawal capabilities can provide the operational flexibility to meet the water quality demands both in-reservoir and downstream. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a one-dimensional reservoir selective withdrawal model (SELECT) as a tool for supporting downstream water quality management for Daecheong and Imha reservoirs. The simulated water quality variables including water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, turbidity were compared with the field data measured in tailwater. The model showed fairly satisfactory results and high reliability in simulating observations. The coefficients of determinant between simulated and observed turbidity values were 0.93 and 0.95 for Daecheong and Imha reservoirs, respectively. The outflow water quality was significantly influenced by water intake level under fully stratified condition, while the effect of intake amount was minor. In conclusion, the SELECT is simple but effective tool for supporting downstream water quality prediction and management for both reservoirs.
The dynamics of phytoplankton community after the formatiom of turbidity was assessed at Dam barrage of Lake Imha from May 2003 to July 2004. The maximum turbidity of 1221 NTU during September and October 2003 was well correlated with heavy precipitation caused by Typoon Maemi. A total of 102 phytoplankton taxa was identified and the most abundant phytoplankton group was Bacillariophyceae with 63 taxa, followed by Chlorophyceae with 23 taxa, Cyanophyceae with 9 taxa, 3 taxa each of Synurophyceae and Cryptophyceae and Euglenophyceae with 1 taxon. The total standing crops ranged between 270 indls. $mL^{-1}$ and 4,515 indls. $mL^{-1}$ during the investigation Periods. The three species, Cryptomonas ovata, Cyclotella sp. and Microcystis aeruginosa predominated in sequence after the decrease of turbidity.
Background: The objectives of this study were to establish a swimming capability model for largemouth bass using the FishXing (version 3) program, and to determine the swimming speed and feasibility of fish passage through a waterway tunnel. This modeling aimed to replicate the waterway tunnel connecting the Andong and Imha Reservoirs in South Korea, where there is a concern that largemouth bass may be able to pass through this structure. As largemouth bass are considered an invasive species, this spread could have repercussions for the local environment. Results: Flow regime of water through the waterway tunnel was calculated via the simulation of waterway tunnel operation, and the capability of largemouth bass to pass through the waterway tunnel was then estimated. The swimming speed and distance of the largemouth bass had a positive linear function with total length and negative linear function with the flow rate of the waterway tunnel. The passing rate of small-size largemouth bass (10-30 cm) was 0%at a flow of $10m^3/s$ due to rapid exhaustion from prolonged upstream swimming through the long (1.952 km) waterway tunnel. Conclusions: The results of FishXing showed that the potential passing rate of large size largemouth bass (>40 cm) through the waterway tunnel was greater than 10%; however, the passage of largemouth bass was not possible because of the mesh size ($3.4{\times}6.0cm$) of the pre-screening structures at the entrance of the waterway tunnel. Overall, this study suggests that the spread of largemouth bass population in the Imha Reservoir through the waterway tunnel is most likely impossible.

For efficient turbid water management a SWAT model was established for the Imha-Andong watershed where serious turbid water problems have frequently occurred. To evaluate soil loss combined with rainfall runoff process, the analysis focused on comparing the daily runoff discharge and concentration of suspended sediment (SS) using measured data sets. The results of annual SS load analysis for each sub-basin using the calibrated model showed that in the entire target watershed the soil loss ranged from 0.7 to 5.9 tons/ha in year 2005 and from 3.0 to 34.0 tons/ha in year 2003 when the typhoon 'Maemi' severly affected the area. In the future, it is suggest to increase model simulation accuracies supported by a long-term and extensive monitoring to enhance basin-wide suspended sediment estimation and management.

The temporal and spatial variations of water quality in a stratified reservoir are fully dependent on the characteristics of inflow loading from its watershed and the transport regimes of pollutants after entering the reservoir. Because of the meteorological and hydrological conditions in Korea, the pollutants loading to reservoirs are mostly occur during rainfall events. Therefore it is important to understand the characteristics of pollutants loading from upstream rivers and their spatial propagation through the stratified reservoir during the rainfall events. The objectives of this study were to characterize the water quality variations in upstream rivers of Imha Reservoir during a rainfall event, and the transport and spatial variations of pollutants in the reservoir through extensive field monitoring and laboratory analysis. The results showed that the event mean concentration (EMC) of SS, BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, T-N, T-P, $PO_4-P$ are 8.6 ~ 362.1, 2.5 ~ 5.1, 1.5 ~ 5.1, 1.1 ~ 1.9, 8.3 ~ 57.1, 5.6 ~ 25.7 times greater than the mean concentrations of these parameters during non-rainfall period. The turbidity and SS data showed good linear correlations, but the relationships between flow and SS showed large variations because of hysteresis effect during rising and falling periods of the flood. The ratio of POC to TOC were 12.6 ~ 14.7% during the non-rainfall periods, but increased up to 28.2 ~ 41.7% during the flood event. The turbid flood flow formed underflow and interflow after entering the reservoir, and delivered a great amount of non-point pollutants such as labile and refractory organic matters and nutrients to the metalimnion layer of reservoir, which is just above the thermocline. Spatially, the lateral variations of most water quality parameters were marginal but the vertical variations were significant.
A 6-year-old, intact male, mongrel dog with yellowish urine, anorexia, depression was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of the Chungnam National university. Immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) was diagnosed by clinical signs, physical examination, laboratory tests (CBC, serum chemistry, Coombs' test, autoagglutination test and urinalysis) and diagnostic imaging (X-ray and ultrasonography). Clinical signs were improved after combined immune-suppressive therapy (prednisolone and cyclosporine) and prophylactic heparin therapy. A thrombus ($4cm{\times}1cm$) was observed in the right ventricle by autopsy. Combined therapy and supportive care (antithrombolytic agent and acupuncture) were effective in a dog with IMHA.
For efficient turbid water withdrawal in the Imha reservoir, a selective withdrawal facility was recently installed and operated during summer season of year 2006. In this research, CE-QUAL-W2 model was utilized to assess the efficiency of the selective withdrawal facility, in comparison with the original surface withdrawal, on turbid water management. Model calibration was carried out using data observed at four automatic monitoring stations in the reservoir. It was found that the model appropriately simulated, with the RMSE less than 5.2 NTU, the observed vertical and horizontal distributions of water temperature and turbidity as well as the location of maximum turbid water at each monitoring station. The analysis results showed that selective withdrawal is more effective in removing high turbid water than surface withdrawal as selective withdrawal contributed to reducing $35Mm^3$ of high turbidity water (> 100 NTU) in the reservoir by increasing outflows of high turbid water. Therefore, effective management of turbid water in the reservoir can be achieved by changing locations of intake depending on turbid water distribution conditions. The results of this study will provide some basic information for establishing better operation strategies to cope with turbid water problems.
