Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a member of the IL-6 cytokine family, having pleiotropic actions such as maintaining stem cell pluripotency and enabling blastocyst implantation. Because the action of LIF is mediated by a ligand-receptor interaction with the LIF receptor (LIF-R), an antagonist for LIF-R has been developed to inhibit LIF-induced signaling. In this study, we present a novel method for the production and purification of an antagonist to human LIF-R (hLA). His-tagged hLA was expressed in E. coli, and simple purification methods without any endopeptidase cleavage were designed. In addition, we determined the optimal temperature conditions for enhancing the production of soluble hLA. Finally, the bioactivity of His-tagged hLA was examined using STAT3 phosphorylation and receptivity of human endometrial ECC-1 cells. Our strategy provides a rapid and efficient method to produce biologically active recombinant hLA.

Purpose: This experiment was designed to find out increasing effects of S. barbata. co-treatment with anti-cancer drugs at cancer cell's growth inhibition effect. Methods: Divergent observational study of the S. barbata. co-treatment with Cisplatin treatment on HeLa cell. Cell viability using MTT assay, Cell Culture and Cytotoxicity Studies, Cell Cycle Analysis, Annexin V-FITC/PI assay, Cell morphological assessment, PARP cleavage using Western blotting analysis when HeLa cell were co-treated with Cisplatin and Scutellaria Barbata extracts. Results: When HeLa cell were co-treated with Cisplatin and Scutellaria Barbata extracts, we found out viability of HeLa cell, changing in the distribution of cell cycle, Annexin V-FITC staining, DAPI staining, PARP clavage protein assay by Western-blot. So Scutellaria Barbata extracts have increased apoptosis Conclusion: When co-treated Scutellaria Barbata extracts with anti-cancer drugs, the anti-cancer effects were increased. We still not sure which constituent apoptosis at cancer cells and activates anti-cancer effects suppressing, but we believe that it'll be revealed here after with following experiments.

To address the ability of Kung-Kyung-Ilho-Jeon(KK) to induce cell death, we investigated the effect of KK on cell viability. Forty-eight hours later, loss of viability occurred following KK exposure in a dose-dependent manner. The treatment of KK, a commonly used herb formulation in Korea and China, caused a decrease in cell viability. KK also resulted in apoptotic morphology a brightly blue-fluorescent condensed nuclei by Hoechst 33258-staining, and reduction of cell volume. Our results show that KK induces caspase-3 and -9 activation in a time-dependent manner. In addtion, the translocation of cytochrome c release into cytoplasm has been observed under the presence of $5mg/m{\ell}$ KK. The subsequent loss of mitochondria membrane potential is collapsed by the addition of KK. Our immunoblotting data show that PARP, a well known caspase-3 and -6 substrate, is cleaved by KK. We show that a pro-apoptotic protein, Bax is increased in the presence of KK but that the amount of Bcl-2 is not changed. We suggest that Bax, a critical protein which can regulate channel of mitochondria to release cytochrome c, is a key protein in KK-induced apoptosis of Hela human cervical carcinoma cells

The role of gas ratio with the crystallization behavior and electrical properties in $Bi_{3.25}La_{0.75}Ti_3O_{12}$(BLT) thin films by rf magnetron sputtering method has not been precisely defined. In this work, the ferroelectric properties of these films with gas variation was investigated. BLT thin films were deposited on the Pt/Ti bottom electrode by rf magnetron sputtering method and then they were crystallized by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). The experiment showed that all BLT films indicated perovskite polycrystalline structure with preferred orientation (020) and (0012). And no pyrochlore phase was observed. The fabricated film annealed with $O_2$ of 15 sccm showed that value of leakage current was $9.67{\times}10^{-7}A/cm^2$ at 50kV /em, and the value of remanent polarization (2Pr=Pr+-Pr-) was $11.8{\mu}C/cm^2$. Therefore we induce access to memory device application by rf-magnetron sputtering method in this report.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the anti-proliferative effect and the mechanisms underlying apoptosis induced by a methanol extracts from Ishige sinicola (ISE) in HeLa cells. ISE treatment for 24 hr significantly inhibited cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. Apoptosis was detected by Hoechst 33258 staining and an annexin V/PI assay after 24 hr treatment. Moreover, ISE treatment triggered the cleavage of caspase-8, -9, -3, and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) in dose-dependent and time-dependent manners. In addition, z-VAD-fmk, a general caspase inhibitor, blocked ISE-induced cell death. Taken together, these results suggest that ISE-induced apoptosis is mediated by the activation of a caspase cascade in HeLa cells.

Hemangioma of the heart, presenting as a primary cardiac tumor is extremely rare; it accounts for approximately 2% of all primary resected heart tumors. In our patient, the tumor was located in the orifice of the right lower pulmonary vein. Few cases of cardiac hemangiomas have been reported to arise from the left atrial (LA) wall. Left atrial hemangiomas, especially those attached to the LA wall, may be erroneously diagnosed as myxomas. Cardiac hemangioma is a rare disease; furthermore, a tumor arising from the LA wall and misconceived as a myxoma is extremely rare. We removed a mass misdiagnosed as a myxoma; it was pathologically confirmed to be a cardiac capillary hemangioma. Therefore, we report a rare case of a cardiac hemangioma misconceived as a myxoma; the tumor was removed successfully.

Curcumin (diferuloyl methane), originated rhizomes of Curcuma longa L. has been suggested as an anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic agent. In the present study, modulation of cytotoxic effects of curcumin on HeLa cells by different types of antioxidants was investigated. Cytotoxic effects of curcumin were significantly enhanced in the presence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) by decreasing $IC_{50}$ to 15.4 from $26.0\;{\mu}M$ after 24 hr incubation; the activity was not altered by catalase. The effect of curcumin was significantly less pronounced in the presence of 4 mM N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Low concentration (<1 mM) of NAC, however, increased the efficacy of curcumin. Cysteine and ${\beta}$-mercaptoethanol that have a thiol group, showed the similar biphasic patterns as NAC for modulating curcumin cytotoxicity, which was, however, constantly enhanced by ascorbic acid, a non-thiol antioxidant. In the presence of SOD, ascorbic acid, and 0.5 mM NAC, cellular levels of curcumin were significantly increased by 31-66%, whereas 4 mM NAC decreased the level. The present results indicate that thiol reducing agents showed a biphasic effect in modulating cytotoxicity of curcumin; it is likely that their thiol group is reactive with curcumin especially at high concentrations.

Pb0.5Sr0.5TiO3(PST) thin films were deposited on the LaNiO3 (LNO(100))/Si and Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by the alkoxide-based sol-gel method. Structural and dielectric properties of PST thin films for the tunable microwave device applications were investigated. The PST films, which were directly grown on the Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates showed the random orientation. For the LNO/Si substrates, the PST thin films exhibited highly (100) orientation. Compared with randomly oriented films, the highly (100)-oriented PST thin films showed better dielectric constant, tunability, and figure of merit (FOM). The dielectric constant, tunability, and FOM of the highly (100)-oriented PST thin film increased with increasing annealing temperature due to the decrease in lattice distortion. The differences in dielectric properties may be attributed to the change in the film stress and the in-plane oriented Polar axis depending on the substrate was used. The dielectric constants, dielectric loss and tunability of the PST thin films deposited on the LNO/Si substrates measured at 1 MHz were 483, 0.002, and 60.1%, respectively.

ALA is an essential intermediate in the tetrapyrrole biosynthesis pathway and has applications as a biodegradable herbicide and insecticide as well as medical applications including photodynamic therapy of cancers. For the development of mass production process of ALA it is necessary to on-line monitor some metabolites such as glycine, succinate, LA and ALA. In this work, medium compositions, pH conditions, induction and addition of LA were investigated to increase the production of ALA by recombinant E. coli. A 2-dimensional fluorescence sensor was used to monitor the processe and the fluorescence spectra were correlated with on- and off-line data like ALAS, ALAD, cell mass etc.
