  • A canonical correlation analysis(CCA)-based method is proposed for prediction of future climate change which combines information from ensembles of atmosphere-ocean general circulation models(AOGCMs) and observed climate values. This paper focuses on predictions of future climate on a regional scale which are of potential economic values. The proposed method is obtained by coupling the classical CCA with empirical orthogonal functions(EOF) for dimension reduction. Furthermore, we generate a distribution of climate responses, so that extreme events as well as a general feature such as long tails and unimodality can be revealed through the distribution. Results from real data examples demonstrate the promising empirical properties of the proposed approaches.

  • The aim of the present study was to optimize culture condition for the expression of lipocortin-1$_{1-185}$ in a recombinant of Escherichia coli using batch system. Plasmid (pHT22) carrying lipocortin-1$_{1-185}$ gene was well maintained in the recombinant with the addition of amplicillin as a selection pressures. Optimum temperature was 28$^{\circ}C$ for seed culture and 4$0^{\circ}C$ for main culture and the optimum pH was 7.0. The production of Lipocortin-1$_{1-185}$ was closely associated with cell growth and related to plasmid amplification.

  • For the investigation of medicinal resources in Hydrocotyle species, the studies were conducted to evaluate the pharmaco-constituents in Hydrocotyle japonica MAKINO (Umbelliferae), which is used as folk medicine in Korea. From the methyl alcohol extract of the whole plant, $isorhamnetin-3-O-{\beta}-D-galactoside$ ($C_{22}H_{22}O_{12}{\cdot}1/3H_2O$, bright yellow needle crystal, mp $247{\sim}248^{\circ}C$, $[{\alpha}]_D^{28}^{\circ}=-52.27^{\circ}$ in pyridine), one of three flavonol substances in extrat, was isolated and identified by physicochemical properties and spectroscopic evidences (UV, IR, NMR and MS etc.,) in comparison with authentic sample. This flavonoid was appeared from Hydrocotyle japonica MAKINO through phytochemical approaches at the outset.

  • The degradation of 3-chlorophenol(3-CP) by various AOPs(Advanced Oxidation Processes) including the ultraviolet / hydrogen peroxide, the Fenton and the ultraviolet(UV)-Fenton process has been conducted. The highest removal efficiency for 3-CP in the aqueous phase was obtained by the UV-Fenton process among the AOPs. In the UV-Fenton process, The removal efficiency of 3-CP decreased with increasing pH in the range of 3 to 6, and it decreased with increasing initial concentration. As the intermediates of 3-CP by UV-Fenton reaction, 3-chlorocatechol, 4-chlorocatechol, and chlorohydroquinone were detected thus the degradation pathways were proposed.

  • We propose a cascade lane detector that uses biased discriminant analysis (BDA) to work effectively even when there are various external factors on the road. The proposed cascade detector was designed with an existing lane detector and the detection module using BDA. By placing the BDA module in the latter stage of the cascade detector, the erroneously detected results by the existing detector due to sunlight or road fraction were filtered out at the final lane detection results. Experimental results on road images taken under various environmental conditions showed that the proposed method gave more robust lane detection results than conventional methods alone.

  • In general, causal relationship for theoretical concepts is hypothesized based on precedent studies and tested by a structural equation model. However, when theoretical backgrounds are scarce or absent, the causal relationship is hypothesized operatively by the purpose and scope of research and tested by overall goodness-of-fit indices such as GFI and RMR. Such a causal relationship can't be most appropriate statistically because it is selected as specific relationship from researcher's view among possible causal relationships. Therefore, this study is to propose a procedure for identifying the causal relationship that produces the best GFI among possible causal relationships for theoretical concepts.

  • To investigate groundwater variation characteristics in the Hancheon watershed, Jeju Island, an integrated hydrologic component analysis was carried out. For this purpose, SWAT-MODFLOW which is an integrated surface-groundwater model was applied to the watershed for continuous watershed hydrologic analysis as well as groundwater modeling. First, ephemeral stream characteristics of Hancheon watershed can be clearly simulated which is unlikely to be shown by a general watershed hydrologic model. Second, the temporally varied groundwater recharge can be properly obtained from SWAT and then spatially distributed groundwater recharge can be made by MODFLOW. Finally, the groundwater level variation was simulated with distributed groundwater pumping data. Since accurate recharge as well as abstraction can be reflected into the groundwater modeling, more realistic hydrologic component analysis and groundwater modeling could be possible.

  • In this study, a method of simulating ephemeral stream runoff characteristics in Jeju watershed is newly suggested. The process based conceptual-physical scheme is established based on the SWAT-K and applied to Cheonmi-cheon watershed which shows the typical pattern of ephemeral stream runoff characteristics. For the proper simulation of this runoff, the intermediate flow and baseflow are controlled to make downward percolation should be dominant. The result showed that surface runoff simulated by using the modified scheme showed good agreement with observed runoff data. In addition, it was found that the estimated runoff directly affected the groundwater recharge rate. This conceptual model should be continuously progressed including rainfall interception, spatially estimated evapotranspiration and so forth for the reasonable simulation of the hydrologic characteristics in Jeju island.

  • Current rechargeable battery cannot provide high energy density and the operational durations required. But linear engine/generators provide high energy density for portable power applications because fuel is more high density. In this paper, we suggest that basic design of powerpack using linear engine for assisting power output. Efficiency is relatively high because linear engine don't have crank mechanism compared with rotary engine. We made prototype engine and had experiments to know moving characteristic about the Linear Engine. It was possible to operate velocity at 50 Hz at the firing and pressure in cylinder was 16bar.

  • In this study, we have researched the optimum design method of the lenticular lens sheet for 3D displays on a TFT-LCD panel, to offer a more stable stereoscopic image, improved 3D quality, and a wider viewing zone. Especially, we have defined the viewing zone width (a parameter denoted as Z) to apply it to the optimum design. The results of this new design method have been compared with the existing design method. As a result, it is revealed that the proposed design method improves the stereoscopic image quality by reducing the black matrix zone width.
