  • Taemyeongcheong (TMC) is Korean traditional extracted drink with various health ingredients. TMC has been used to treat hepatic damage, obesity, gastritis, and colitis. However, the role of TMC on allergic reaction has not been studied yet. In this study, we investigated the anti-allergic effects of TMC against a compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylactic reaction and IgE-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA). TMC significantly inhibited the compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylactic reaction and IgE-mediated PCA reaction. Furthermore, TMC reduced the levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-13, and vascular endothelial growth factor in the serum of mice under PCA reaction. Taken together, these results suggest that TMC can play a useful role as an anti-allergic agent.

  • In the weled structures, fatigue fracture mainly depends upon crack growth behavior. Specially anisotropy of crack growth orientation and welding direction become important factor of fracture in the welding jone. When fatigue stressed steel welded with nonfatigue stressed steel, at the low stress intensity factor range, residual stress become more important factor of growth behavior then properties of base metal but when the crack growth in the weld metal, toughness of weld metal become the most important factor. Especially nonhomgeniety of toughness for the weld metal make more scatter the relations of $da/dN-{\Delta}K$.

  • BP201, porcine lung tissue-derived phospholipids, consists of phosphatidylcholine as a major phospholipid species. BP201 promoted hair growth after application onto the shaved backs of BALB/c and C3H mice. Its effect was enhanced when applied together with minoxidil (MNX) in C3H mice. When the tissue specimens prepared from the shaved skins of BP201-treated and control mice were microscopically examined, the total numbers of hair follicles in both anagen and telogen phases of BP201-treated mice were significantly higher than those of control mice. The numbers of hair follicles in the anagen phase of BP201-treated mice were also higher than those of control mice. In combination with MNX, BP201 further increased the total number of hair follicles, but did not alter the percentage of hair follicles in the anagenic phase. BP201 also increased the proliferation of human hair follicle dermal papilla cells. Collectively, BP201 possesses hair growth promoting potential, which would suggest its use singly or in combination for hair growth products.

  • Remote sensing can be used to provide information about the monitoring of crop growth condition. Recently Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology offers new opportunities for assessing crop growth condition using UAV imagery. The objective of this study was to assess weather UAV aerial images are suitable for the monitoring of highland Kimchi cabbage. This study was conducted using a fixed-wing UAV (Model : Ebee) with Cannon S110, IXUS/ELPH camera during farming season from 2015 to 2016 in the main production area of highland Kimchi cabbage, Anbandegi, Maebongsan, and Gwinemi. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) by using UAV images was stable and suitable for monitoring of Kimchi cabbage situation. There were strong relationships between UAV NDVI and the growth parameters (the plant height and leaf width) ($R^2{\geq}0.94$). The tendency of UAV NDVI according to Kimchi cabbage growth was similar in the same area for two years (2015~2016). It means that if UAV image may be collected several years, UAV images could be used for estimation of the stage of growth and situation of Kimchi cabbage cultivation.

  • InP/InGaP quantum structures (QSs) were grown on GaAs (001) substrates by a migration-enhanced molecular beam epitaxy method. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) and emission wavelength-dependent time-resolved PL (TRPL) were performed to investigate the optical properties of InP/InGaP QSs as a function of migration enhanced epitaxy (MEE) growth cycles from 2 to 8. One cycle for the growth of InP QS consists of 2-s In and 2-s P supply with an interruption time of 10 s after each source supply. As the MEE growth cycle increases from 2 to 8, the PL peak is redshifted and exhibited different (larger, comparable, or smaller) bandgap shrinkages with increasing temperature compared to that of bulk InP. The PL decay becomes faster with increasing MEE cycles while the PL decay time increases with increasing emission wavelength. These PL and TRPL results are attributed to the different QS density and size/shape caused by the MEE repetition cycles. Therefore, the size and density of InP QSs can be controlled by changing the MEE growth cycles.

  • It has been commonly known that cell growth is inhibited by the lack of dissolved oxygen and mass transfer inhibition of nutrients at stationary phase in fed-batch culture. In this study, Pluronic F-68 and oxygen vectors were added in Angelica gigas Nakai suspension culture in order to enhance cell growth in fed-batch culture. It was observed that the addition of 6%(w/v) Pluronic F-68 promoted cell growth up to 6.1% compared to control and that the use of 4%(v/v) n-hexadecane markedly enhanced cell growth up to 11.4%.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of shading on the growth and productivity of strawberries. Photosynthesis was normally achieved under natural light without shading treatment, and vegetative growth of under- and aboveground part of strawberry plants were excellent. Strawberry fruit productivity and quality were different depending on shading conditions. In natural light, they were improved possibly by balanced vegetative and reproductive growth. However, under light-shading conditions with insufficient sunshine, photosynthetic activity deteriorated and carbohydrate production was therfore inadequate; this adversely affected plant height and quality. The negative effects were more pronounced at 50% shading condition. Shading treatments resulting in insufficient sunshine had a detrimental impact on plant productivity and growth; this implies that proper shading conditions could heip improve yield and fruit quality.

  • The induction of growth promotion on numerous crops by rhizobacteria is a well documented phenomenon. In case of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), fruit yield is higher in replant soil than that in fresh soil. To investigate what kind of rhizobacterium is involved, microbial community in rhizosphere and on rhizoplane of tomato plants from each soil was analyzed by dilution plating on selective media. Many Gram-negative bacteria and actinomycetes were isolated from tomato in replant soil. One Gram-negative rhizobacterium isolated was identified as Pseudomonas putida based on its biochemical characteristics, fatty acid methyl ester analysis and 16S rDNA sequence. This bacterium designated strain 17 inhibited the growth of Pseudomonas corrugata, and increased growth of tomato seedlings. In addition, its culture filtrate inhibited conidial germination of plant-pathogenic fungi such as Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici, F. oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum, and Nectria radicicola. Scanning electron microscopy revealed strain 17 colonized and persisted on the epidermal surfaces of tomato radicles and roots. These results suggest that P. putida strain 17 may serve as a biological control agent to suppress multiple soil-borne diseases for tomato plants. Increased microbial populations that suppress deleterious microorganisms including pathogens could be one of the major factors in increased tomato yield in replant soil.
