  • Wireless LAN system is evolving toward high-speed data transmission and more accurate channel estimation is necessarily required to improve communication performance. The PLCP preamble field in IEEE 802.11 based wireless MODEM consists of ten short symbols and two long symbols and is used for synchronization and channel estimation. The existing least square (LS) channel estimation is based on only two long training symbols. After estimating channel response separately by using each long training symbol, the final channel estimation is obtained by the average of each estimation. In this paper, a new channel estimation algorithm is presented to improve the performance of the existing LS channel estimation algorithm. From the fact that the short training symbol consists of 12 non-zero subcarriers, it gives us a clue of being able to additionally estimate at least one fourth of channel coefficients. The new LS algorithm performs channel estimation based on both two long training symbols and a short training symbol. The proposed LS algorithm shows a little bit performance improvement over the existing LS estimation and it will be able to be applied to the IEEE 802.11p WAVE system.

  • Like other wireless network protocols, IEEE 802.15.4 adopts CA (Collision Avoidance)algorithm to avoid the early collision of a new packet by randomizing its first transmission time rather than its immediate delivery. The traditional CA scheme of IEEE 802.15.4, however, selects the random access time from the predetermined range without considering the degree of current congestion. It probably causes either a long delay to settle in the suitable range for the current network load or frequent clashes especially during the long lasting heavy traffic period. This paper proposes an ACA(Adaptive Collision Avoidance) algorithm adapting the initial backoff range to the undergoing collision variations. It also introduces a mathematical model to predict the performance of ACA algorithm added to IEEE 802.15.4. With only small deviations from corresponding simulations, our analytical model shows that ACA technique can improve the throughput of IEEE 802.15.4 by up-to 41% maximally in addition to shortening the packet delays.

  • As market expansion and demand for smart phone have increased, the wireless data trafic is rapidly growing now. To solve this problem, common carriers in Korea distribute the trafic over Wi-Fi. Smart phones have multi interfaces such as 3G radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and etc and can utilize them. However these interfaces support seamless handover between not different interfaces but same interfaces, so that users couldn't be supported continuity for handover. In this paper, we describe the Media Independent Handover(MIH) services that is proposed by IEEE 802.21. The standard enhance the handovers across heterogeneous access networks and to optimize the service continuity during handovers.

  • This paper describes a design of AES-based CCMP(Counter mode with CBC-MAC Protocol) core for IEEE 802.11i wireless LAN security. To maximize the performance of CCMP core, two AES cores are used, one is the counter mode for data confidentiality and the other is the CBC node for authentication and data integrity. The S-box that requires the largest hardware in ARS core is implemented using composite field arithmetic, and the gate count is reduced by about 27% compared with conventional LUT(Lookup Table)-based design. The CCMP core was verified using Excalibur SoC kit, and a MPW chip is fabricated using a 0.35-um CMOS standard cell technology. The test results show that all the function of the fabricated chip works correctly. The CCMP processor has 17,000 gates, and the estimated throughput is about 353-Mbps at 116-MHz@3.3V, satisfying 54-Mbps data rate of the IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g specifications.

  • The IEEE 802.15.4 low rate wireless personal area network is a protocol suitable for wireless sensor networks. Thus there has been growing interest in the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol in the home automation networks. This paper proposes a scheduling scheme obtaining optimal parameters regarding the IEEE 802.15.4 frame and subframes in the home automation networks. Guaranteed time slots (GTS) are exploited for the delivery of real-time traffic. Given a set of the requirements for bandwidths and periods assigned to nodes in the network, the beacon interval and the active/inactive subframe duration satisfying the requirements are selected considering the low duty cycle by the proposed scheme. Based on these parameters, analytic results provide the way to efficient use of network resources including energy.

  • The IEEE 802.1x standard provides an architectural framework which can be used various authentication methods. But, IEEE 802.1x also has vulnerabilities about the DoS(Denial of Service), the session hijacking and the MiM(Man in the Middle) attack due to caused by structural of authentication protocol. In this paper, we propose a WLAN system which can offer safety communication by complement of IEEE 802.1x vulnerabilities. The WLAN system accomplishes mutual authentications between authentication servers, clients and the AP using PKI and prevents an illegal user from intervening in communication to disguise oneself as a client, the AP or authentication servers. Also, we guarantee the safety of the communication by the Dynamic WEP key distribution between clients and the AP.

  • Wakeup schemes that turn off sensors' radio when communication is not necessary have great potential in energy saving. At the start of each beacon interval in the IEEE 802.11 power saving mode specified for DCF, each node periodically wakes up for duration called the ATIM Window. However, in the power saving mechanism specified in IEEE 802.11, all nodes use the same ATIM window size. Since the ATIM window size critically affects throughput and energy consumption, a fixed ATIM window does not perform well in all situations. This paper proposes an adaptive mechanism to dynamically choose an ATIM window size according to network condition. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the IEEE 802.11 power saving mechanism in terms of the amount of power consumed and the packet delivery ratio.

  • Channel diversity is exploited to increase multiuser diversity gains in IEEE 802.11 WLANs. To this end, we propose an opportunistic channel switching method and evaluate this with different number of stations, number of channels, switching latency, and the average channel condition of stations.

  • In this paper we propose a new method which adjusts the collision resolution depending on busy status of the channel to improve performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF. This scheme reduces the number of collisions in wireless channel by decreasing the amount of movements of each station's backoff stage based on busy event count and the one stage backoff model. Through simulation, we compared the performance of our scheme with that of DCF, ADCF and SD.

  • A FFT/IFFT processor is the key component for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems based IEEE 802.11n wireless local area network (WLAN). There exists many radix algorithms according to the structure of butterfly as FFT sub-module, each has the pros and cons on hardware complexity. Here, mixed radix algorithms for 64 and 128 FFT/IFFT processors are proposed, which reduce hardware complexity by using mixture of radix-23 and radix-4 algorithms. The proposed algorithm finish calculation within 3.2${\mu}s$ in order to meet IEEE 802.11n standard requirements and it has less hardware complexity compared with conventional algorithms.
