  • IoT has been consistently used in various fields such as smart home, wearables, and healthcare. Since IoT devices are small terminals, relatively simple wireless communication protocols such as IEEE 802.15.4 and ISO 18000 series are used. In this paper, we designed the 802.15.4q 2.4 GHz TASK physical layer. Physical protocol data unit of TASK supports bit-level interleaving and shortened BCH encoding. It is spread by unique ternary sequences. There are four spreading factors to choose the data rate according to the communication channel environment. The TASK physical layer was designed using verilog-HDL and verified through the loop-back test of the transceiver. The designed TASK physical layer was implemented in a fpga and tested using MAXIM RFICs. The PER was about 0% at 10 dB SNR. It is expected to be used in small, low power IoT applications.

  • This paper proposes a method of applying an advanced preamble detection technology to wireless sensor nodes and analyzes the trade-off relationship between throughput and fairness that may occur when sensor nodes equipped with the MIM function compete with the legacy IEEE 802.15.4 sensors. Sensor nodes employing the MIM capability have more chances of concurrent transmissions than the legacy IEEE 802.15.4-based sensor nodes, resulting in gains in terms of throughput, whereas the transmission opportunities of 802.15.4 sensor nodes might be limited due to the additional simultaneous transmissions of the MIM sensor nodes. The extensive evaluation results performed under a test environment built using Python program with reflecting the setting value of a commercial sensor node shows MIM sensor nodes outperform up to 40% over the legacy 802.11 sensors. Meanwhile, it was confirmed that a balance can be achieved in terms of throughput and fairness by properly adjusting the concurrent transmission threshold.

  • We aim at frequency offset estimation for IEEE 802.15.4a ranging systems, where an impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) signal is exploited, By incorporating the property of the ternary code in the preamble, we derive a simplified maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation of the frequency offset. In addition, a closed form estimator for implementation is investigated. Simulation results and theoretical analysis verify our estimators in IEEE 802.15.4a IR-UWB packet-based ranging systems.

  • In this paper, we present measurement method of the amount of used piped water and the communications environment for automatic piped water meter reading. The existing piped water meter reading which is carried out by the human in person by monitoring the amount of use and recording make the problem of an error of the figure and being short of staffed to carry out piped water meter reading. To solve the existing problem in this paper, the amount of used piped water is converted into data type by Photo Interrupt Sensor, and IEEE 802.15.4 Protocol is used to confirm the measurement in remote place.

  • This paper proposes a new method to optimize energy consumption in a wireless modem by setting up a transmission power value according to the distance between nodes and circumstance in the MAC layer of IEEE 802.15.4. The proposed method can dynamically find an optimal transmission power range using the binary search scheme and minimize overhead caused by multiple message transmissions when determining the optimal transmission power. The determined transmission power is used for transmitting data packets and can be modified dynamically depending on the changes in a network environment when exchanging data packets and acknowledgement signals. The results of the simulations show 30% reduction in energy consumption while 2.5 times increase in data transmission rate per unit of energy comparing with IEEE 802.15.4 standard.

  • Since most of devices in the IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN are expected to operate on batteries, they must be designed to consume energy in a very conservative way. Two energy conservation algorithms are proposed for the LR-WPAN: DDC (Dynamic Duty Cycle) and DBT (Dynamic Beacon Tracking). The DDC algorithm adjusts duty cycle dynamically depending on channel conditions. The DBT algorithm switches beacon tracking mode on and off adaptively depending on traffic conditions. Combining the two algorithms reduces energy consumption more efficiently for a wide range of input loads, while maintaining frame delivery ratio and average delay at satisfactory levels.

  • The GTS(Guaranteed Time Slot) of IEEE802.15.4 standard, which is the contention free access mechanism, has some problems such as the limited number of deployed devices, the low channel utilization and the service confirm delay. The proposed Cyclic-CFA(Contention Free Access) scheme is a modified polling algorithm that allows a large number of devices to be served Contention Free Access without polling packets. The Cyclic-CFA scheme improves the channel utilization dramatically and also reduces service delay time.

  • In this paper, an IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN 868/915 MHz ZigBee transceiver for IoT systems was designed and implemented. Non-coherent demodulation was exploited to satisfy ${\pm}80ppm$ frequency offset recommended in IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN. Variable bitrate was supported according to operation modes. SPI module was embedded to connect various MCUs. The designed Zigbee transceiver was described in Verilog HDL and it was synthesized and verified in $0.18{\mu}m$ process. Its gate count was about 32,000 gates.

  • This paper proposes a two-stage synchronization scheme using a serial search non-coherent correlator appropriate for the IEEE 802.15.4a system. The proposed method improved the synchronization performance by using multi-pulse signals unlike the conventional method using single-pulse signals. It also compensated for the degradation of performance at low SNR resulting from the use of fixed threshold by applying the adaptive threshold technique. The proposed method showed a detection probability that is higher by approximately 0.2-0.3 compared with the conventional method in the IEEE 802.15.4a channel model.

  • A novel channel estimation scheme is proposed for coherent Impulse Radio Ultra Wideband (IR-UWB) system based on IEEE 802.15.4a specification. By extracting and utilizing the information on the frequency synchronization, the proposed channel estimation algorithm improves the receiver performance even under the restricted number of preamble symbols in IEEE 802.15.4a signal format. Simulation results over the IEEE 802.15.4a channel models show the performance gain with the proposed algorithm compared to ordinary channel estimation method.
