  • The IT project for power plants initiated domestically in 2005 necessitates the power equipment facility and the controllers for those to be sufficiently adaptable for automation system for power substations. This implies that the power plants using power equipments must be developed to satisfy the IEC61850 standards. The IEC61850 communication standards that all power equipment and facility and controllers installed in automation system for power substations must follow has had its Parts 3 and Part 4 established as international standard in January 2002 and Part 10 in May 2005, the last to become international standard. Hence all separate parts of the original IEC61850 standard came to be established as international standards. As a consequence, after 2005, in most power substations around the world the IEC61850 standard is being applied and the prominent makers are geared towards manufacturing products to the IEC61850 standard. The IEC61850 is being recognized as an essential standard that must be applied to not only power substations but for automation of power systems and communication systems. In this research, the Gateway device that connects current SCADA system and IEC61580 based system has been domesticated with Korea‘s own technology and extensive testing was carried out in order to obtain confidence in its performance.

  • This paper focuses on the reverse blocking busbar protection scheme with aim to improve the speed of its operation and at the same time to increase operational reliability, flexibility and stability of the protection during external and internal faults by implementation of the extended functionality provided by the IEC61850 standard-based protective Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). The practical implementation of the scheme by the use of IEC 61850 standard communication protocol is investigated. The proposed scheme is designed for a radial type of a distribution network and is modeled and simulated in the DigSILENT software environment for various faults on the busbar and its outgoing feeders. A laboratory test bench is built using three ABB IEDs 670 series that are compliant with the IEC 61850 standard, CMC 356 Omicron test injection device, PC, MOXA switch, and a DC power supplier. Two types of the reverse blocking signals between the IEDs in the test bench are considered: hard wired and Ethernet communication by using IEC 61850 standard GOOSE messages. Comparative experimental study of the operational trip response speeds of the two implementations for various traffic conditions of the communication network shows that the performance of the protection scheme for the case of Ethernet IEC 61850 standard-based communication is better.

  • In this paper, a substation HMI based on IEC 61850 is proposed that uses SCL to have all information in substation to include standard concept of IEC 61850. A proposed substation HMI using SCL based on IEC 61850 expresses different display by each substation structure and component device change in substation. A proposed substation HMI is designed by IEC 61850 standard, and it suits for future substation HMI based on IEC 61850. A proposed HMI is proved by a program that is made by Visual C++ to use SCL file based on XML.

  • IEC 61850 is a standard for power utility automation. Using IEC 61850 that uses ethernet may consume more costs for the automation than its value in small distribution substations. Thus, less expense and installation cost are required for the automation of small distribution substations. This study used inexpensive and easy-to-install IEEE 802.15.4 and implemented a bridge between IEC 61850 and IEEE 802.15.4, using Raspberry Pi to connect the existing IEC 61850. Using IEEE 1588, IEC 61850 traffic performances were evaluated, such as SV, GOOSE and MMS. Analyzing IEC 61850 requirements and performance evaluation results, the scope of application of IEEE 802.15.4 was decided.

  • The smart grid, which is an integrated type of the power system and the digital network, requires the integration of a CIM(Common Information Model) standard for information modelling at the power control centers and an IEC 61850 standard for automation at the substation level in order to efficiently exchange the information between system elements. This paper describes the method of data transfer from one standard information model to the other standard unified information model by mapping between the objects of IEC 61850 and IEC61970 CIM standards both in the static and dynamic models, and designs the method of data transfer and information exchange between the topology processing application using unified topology class packages.

  • In this paper, we propose the protection coordination algorithm using communication methode based on IEC 61850. The communication protocol in power distribution management system has been issued by IEC standard, IEC61850 of them, which was made for substation automation system, has researched to apply into power distribution system, even though the standard is not a suitable for the system. In smart distribution management system' launched in 2009, the communication network based on the ethernet network for IEC 61850 has been designed to apply the self-healing concept, which is to perform the system protection through the communication between remote terminal units(RTU) according to the standard. However, it is first time to apply the scheme in the real. Thus, this paper proposed the protection algorithm and consideration for applying communication method and introduced the result of demonstration.

  • There are many types of power facilities such as transformers, switches, and energy storage devices in the micro grid environment. However, with the development of IoT technology, opportunities to acquire sensor information such as temperature, pressure, and humidity are provided. In the existing micro grid environment, the communication protocols such as MMS transport protocol in IEC 61850 standard is applied in accordance with the integrated operation between the power facilities and the platform. Therefore, to accommodate IoT data, a gateway technology that can link IoT data to a data collection device (FEP) based on IEC 61850 is required. In this paper, we propose IEC 61850 based IoT gateway platform prototype for microgrid operating system linkage. The gateway platform consists of an IoT protocol interface module (MQTT, CoAP, AMQP) and database, IEC 61850 server. For databases, We used open source based NoSQL databases, Hbase and MongoDB, to store JSON data. We verified the interoperability between the IoT protocol and the IEC 61850 protocol using Sisco's MMS EASY Lite.

  • The effect of the fault could be propagated to healthy region when the fault on the power system is not cleared in time. In order to enhance reliability of the protective relay, a dual and/or backup system is adopted for the power system protection. The IEC61850 has become an international standard of the substation automation system for interoperability between heterogeneous IEDs from different vendors. This paper introduces a reliability enhancement technique for the substation automation system using characteristics of the IEC61850.

  • With the advent of the international standard IEC 61850 for communication networks and systems in substations, utilities are beginning to implement substation automation systems (SAS) that can give support to interoperability, interchangeability and self-description features. This paper describes with the SAS design accordance with this new standard. After a brief introduction of IEC 61850 SCL, this paper addresses some issues related to the specification of an IEC 61850 based SAS, and describes the Substation Configuration Language (SCL) based on Extensible Markup Language (XML). The SAS design process is explored with examples including the Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) selection, Logical Nodes (LN) allocation and the related services and the SAS communication architecture.
