  • The growth of information and communication technology (ICT) has led to a rapid of business paradigm shift incurred in the creation of new social/market value, changes of a value chain and elements producing a value creation, and enlargement of the scope of market competition. It leads to the change and evolution of industrial structure, requiring innovations of policy and institution. However, most studies that have focused on the effect of policy and institution on innovation are based on thick description and qualitative evidence, while paying little attention to these linkages in an empirical way. Hence this study has attempted to empirically analyze policy and institutional factors affecting innovation performance, particularly attention to ICT industry in OECD countries. The findings derived from the empirical analysis provide important implications for catch-up countries in relation to the innovations of policy and institution for effective innovation system and start-up ecosystem.

  • Electronic displays have developed as instruments that function as windows of information to satisfy the bidirectional needs of electronic device manufacturers and users. The cathode-ray tube (CRT) display once dominated the display industry. Now, the liquid crystal display (LCD) is dominant, and promising displays are competing to become the next-generation display. Displays reflect the characteristics of the information and communication technology (ICT) industries, such as technological changes, innovative features, and competitive dynamics, and have technologically evolved to dominate the industry and market through various ICT devices. This research utilizes a dominant design concept and examines the case of the flat-panel display industry to propose a comprehensive framework, which considers technological, organizational, and environmental characteristics, of the determinants influencing dominance in the technology-intensive ICT industry. The results show that a dominant design in the flat-panel display industry emerges from technological competition among several designs, based on technological characteristics and market acceptance, and dominates the industry and market by various environmental factors. Our results emphasize the difference between generic technologies and the speed of technological innovation and expand the understanding of the emergence of a dominant design. Furthermore, this paper suggests practical implications for establishing a competition strategy and strategic guidance for other ICT industries as well as the display industry.

This study is to identity the relationship between ICT & digital utilization, global orientation and export marketing capability in Korean SMEs. Survey data of Korean SMEs in south regional areas was collected and analyzed for empirical hypothesis test by PLS structural equation method. The key findings are as follows. First, ICT utilization such as SNS, homepage and online portal does not impact directly on export marketing capability. It means that SMEs would not still take advantage of utilization of social network availability. Second, ICT utilization has positive influences on global market orientation and global network orientation. Finally, both global market orientation and network have significant impacts on export marketing capability. In conclusion, global orientation has full-mediation effects on relationship between ICT capability and global marketing. This study provides evidences and some practical insights that digital utilization have indirect influences on global marketing through global markets and network orientation in Korean SMEs. In information technology era, ICT utilization will play an important role in the process of SMEs' internationalization. Therefore, for sustainable growth and survival SMEs should manage and intensify ICT capability more strategically as one of core competence. The value of ICT capability in SMEs would be depended on their strategic perspectives toward digitalization. Additional empirical research about digital capability based on larger sample will be needed.

  • This study aims to empirically examine serial entrepreneurship in Korea. Using the ICT startups survey data, I compare serial entrepreneurs with their novice counterparts in terms of business behaviors and performances. I found that serial entrepreneurs are more likely than novice ones to co-found a business with other entrepreneurs, enter a market with relatively large assets and expand their business into overseas market. They tend to put more importance on large-scale production and expansion strategy than first-time entrepreneurs. They are more likely to cooperate with suppliers and customers but less likely with the governments. From their experience of founding and operating businesses, the findings suggest that serial entrepeneurs are more market-oriented and more capable of managing internal human relations and external network of supply chain. Consequently, serial entrepreneurs show stronger early financial performance than novice entrepreneurs especially when they team up to found a business.

  • There is growing evidence that professional work is changing as a result of the application of information technology (IT). However, the impact of information technology on professional work has produced mixed results. Our paper considers the source of these mixed results through a greater analytical attention paid to the nature of professional work. Defined as work involving expertise expressed through abstract and formalized knowledge as well as extensive working knowledge, the professional work logic assumes the greatest autonomy and discretion for workers in collectively controlling work characteristics-division of labor and its permanence, control over education, and control over new entrants and the monitoring and disciplining of existing members. The impact of IT on professional work will be difficult to control and predict without considering the assumptions and tensions within and across the three major types of work logics (Professional, Market and Bureaucratic). Using healthcare as an example, the paper provides various propositions for researching the initiation and effects of ICT design through these three work logics. These propositions illustrate the active role that IS researchers can take in researching an important economic and work-related topic, professional work, and in understanding how ICT affects work-related expertise.
