  • For the past years, higher power rating 2 stroke super long stroke diesel engines having more than 8 cylinders and larger cylinder bore are installed mainly on very large containerships to save on fuel consumption. However, these engines are prone to X-mode vibration due to 2nd node torsional vibration or the X-type moment, particularly because of the increase in total length and height. Recently, cases of excessive X-mode vibration often occurred on engine's major components. This vibration is manifested also as secondary vibration causing failure in engine-mount large structures. This study investigated the excitations caused by the 2nd node propulsion shafting torsional vibration that influence X-mode vibration of the main engine and practical countermeasures are proposed. An 8RT-flex82T 8 cylinder engine and 11S90ME-C 11 cylinder engine for a container ship was used as research model.

  • A mathematical model for the waste heat recovery system for an engine was developed. The model based on the experimental data reported before was validated and was used to predict the waste heat recovery and recoverable heat of the engine at various operating conditions of the engine and the system. The model was also used to determine flow rates of the circulating water in the system for a certain temperature increment of the water at various operating conditions of the engine to give basic data to design the system. Stability of the system performance was tested on subjects of vapor lock problem, thermal characteristics of the thermostatic valve, and temperature variation of the circulating water in the engine and fuel consumption of the engine during each mode of the system operation and its change into the other. The test showed that the system operation was stable enough. Temperature profile in the thermal energy storage (TES) was observed during storing thermal energy, and thermal stratification in the TES was well formed acceptable to be used in the system. Finally a scheme to automatize the system was suggested.

  • Engine Noise is composed of the mechanical and combustion noise. The contribution of combustion noise is generally bigger than the contribution of the mechanical noise at idle condition in DI diesel engine. That noise usually makes a roughness problem at the fundamental engine order. It is difficult to remove the modulation frequency so we have to directly reduce the combustion noise. The key effect of combustion noise reducing solution is the modification of the combustion pressure profile. It is accomplished by the multiple injection method and we solved the 400Hz combustion noise and improved the sound quality at idle condition in DI diesel engine.

  • Effect of mean stress on the fatigue life of natural rubber for engine mount was investigated. Fatigue damage parameter based on the maximum Green-Lagrange strain was employed to account for the effect of mean stress. A procedure to predict the fatigue life of rubber components based on the maximum Green-Lagrange strain method was proposed. Nonlinear finite element analysis and fatigue test of jang-gu shape specimen were conducted to predict the fatigue life of engine mount. Predicted fatigue lives have a good agreement with tested lives within a factor of 3.

  • Gas turbine performance is highly dependent on the engine performance which is closely related to the engine materials since they are exposed to severe working environments, i.e, high temperature and high stresses. For this reason, advanced materials with improved properties are required for the engine. The purpose of this research is to develop key materials technologies for aircraft industry and to tester domestic production of related parts. In this paper, the real-time prediction of high temperature creep strength and creep life for nickel-based superalloy Udimet 720(high-temperature and high-pressure the gas turbine engine materials) was performed on round-bar type specimens under pure load at the temperatures of 538, 649 and $704^{\circ}C$.

  • A Korean VLBI Network key science program, the Interferometric Monitoring of Gamma-ray Bright AGNs (iMOGABA) program continues to reveal the nature of the gamma-ray flares in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Here in this presentation, we would like to introduce an interesting story about four gamma-ray bright AGNs - BL Lac, 1633+382, 3C 84, and M87 - based on the recent results of the iMGOABA. The results will include a) a sad story of an 'orphan' gamma-ray flare from BL Lac, b) a position offset of 40 pc for a gamma-ray flaring site from the radio regions in 1633+382, c) a position alignment of a gamma-ray flaring site with a central engine region in 3C 84, and d) a flat millimeter spectrum of a core in M87 revealed by the iMOGABA.

  • As part of preliminary study for development of 1,200 N-class bipropellant rocket engine with the concentrated hydrogen peroxide, bipropellant engine elements were designed and experimentally tested. The catalysts of $MnO_2$ and $MnO_2$ added Pb as an additive were compared to achieve high decomposition performance and the catalytic reactor with $MnO_2$ added Pb was designed and its decomposition efficiency of 97.2% was achieved. The autoignition tests of kerosene by decomposed hydrogen peroxide were carried out under various equivalence ratios to ignite without additional ignition sources. Autoignition were achieved in all experimental conditions and $C^*$ efficiencies at each condition were at or above 90%. From the measured thrust results, the highest value was 830 N which is in corresponds with 1,035 N at vacuum level assuming $C^*$ efficiency equals $I_{sp}$ efficiency.

  • The goals of this research are to understand the $NO_x$ emission in direct injected diesel engine with premixed hydrogen fuel. Hydrogen fuel was supplied into the test engine through the intake pipe. Amount of hydrogen-supplemented fuel was 70 percent basis heating value of the total fuel. The effects of intake air temperature on $NO_x$ emission were studied. The intake air temperature was controlled by flow rate of liquid nitrogen. The major conclusions of this work include : (i) the tested engine was run without backfire under 70 percent hydrogen fuel supplemented. (ii) radicals of nitrogen gas in the intake pipe were increased by 30 percent and cylinder gas temperature was decreased by 24 percent as the intake air temperature were changed from $23^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$ ; and (iii) $NO_x$ emission per unit heating value of supplied fuel was decreased by 45 percent with same decrease of intake air temperature.

  • This research proposes a prototype for visualizing radar rainfall data using the unity 3D engine. The mashup of radar data with topographic information is necessary for the 3D visualization of the radar data with high quality. However, the mashup of a huge amount of radar data and topographic data causes the overload of data processing and low quality of the visualization results. This research utilized the Unitiy 3D engine, a widely used engine in the game industry, for visualizing the 3D topographic data such as the satellite imagery/the DEM(Digital Elevation Model) and radar rainfall data. The satellite image segmentation technique and the image texture layer mashup technique are employed to construct the 3D visualization system prototype based on the topographic information. The developed protype will be applied to the disaster-prevention works by providing the radar rainfall data with the 3D visualization based on the topographic information.
