Determination of an Optimum Initial Cable Tension Force for Cable-Stayed Bridges using the Least Square Method (최소자승법을 이용한 사장교의 적정 케이블 장력 결정)

  • This study presents a method of determining the optimum cable tension forces for the proper initial equilibrium state of a cable-stayed bridge using the least square method. The proposed method minimizes the errors, i.e., the differences, such as the deflection and the moments of the girder and the tower, between the target values from a continuous beam by considering the cable anchor point as supports of the girder and the responses obtained from the analysis of the entire cable-stayed bridge system. Especially, the proposed method can selectively control the adjustment of the tower moment, the girder moment, and the deflections by introducing the weighing matrix. Through numerical analysis and comparisons with existing studies, the usefulness and validity of the proposed method was verified.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of the structural behavior in precast segmental prestressed concrete girders, which consist of five precast segments. These girders were developed to save labor and cost in construction field reducing a term of work. Therefore, four different types of specimens of 25m in length were built, and they were tested and analyzed for observing flexural behavior. The analysis included the investigation of the flexural behaviors in varying tendon amount and at joints using the relationship between moment and deflection. Moreover, nonlinear finite element analysis was utilized to verify the experimental result.

An Evaluation on the Shear Strength of New Type Shear Connectors for a Simple Steel-Concrete Composite Deck (초간편 강합성 바닥판 신형식 전단연결재의 전단내력 평가)

  • A simple steel-concrete composite deck is developed for preventing the lateral torsional buckling of girders that are under construction and for reducing the term of works using H-shaped rolled beams as bridge girders. A new type of shear connectors is also developed for the composite behavior between a simple steel-concrete composite deck and the rolled beams by the connecting conditions between the deck and the girders. One is a connector bolt that is lengthened and split or tightened with two nuts and the other is an I-shaped rolled beam welded on a steel plate with a number of holes punched through the web. In this study, to estimate the shear strength of those shear connectors the push-out tests are performed and the test results are compared with that of the previous studies and the codes. The result of the push-out tests of the connector bolts showed that the shear performance is similar to that of the stud connector and revealed that the equation for the shear strength in the Korean Specification of Highway Bridge overestimates the shear capacity of the connector bolt whose diameter is larger than 19mm. From the push-out tests of punched I-shaped rolled beams with varying welding amounts, with the small amount of welding, shear capacity is governed by the shear capacity of welding. On the other hand, shear capacity is governed by the size of the punched I-shaped rolled beams, regardless of the amount of welding.

Design of Longitudinal prestress of precast decks in twin-girder continuous composite bridges (강박스거더 교량의 프레임 형식 중간다이아프램의 설계)

  • Cross-sectional distortions take place when steel box girders a re subjected to torsional moment, as a consequence of which distortional warping stresses are necessarily developed. Additional normal stresses due to the distortion are should be included at the design stage. The relative magnitude with respect to the maximum bending stress are kept less than the specific values, i.e., at 5~10%, by properly spaced intermediate diaphragms that could prevent the distortional deformation of the box girder. However, current design equations for the stiffness of intermediate diaphragms were derived based on BEF. In this study, the area required by the intermediate diaphragm members are investigated through three-dimensional finite element analyses. The results of the analyses indicate that the current equations give to conservative values for the intermediate diaphragm of box girder bridges. Finally, an improved equation for the area of the intermediate diaphragm is derived from a regression analysis from the finite element analysis results.

Characteristics of Flexural Behavior of Composite Section Consisting of Steel Girder with 80MPa High Strength Concrete on Compressive Flange (압축 플랜지에 80MPa급 고강도 콘크리트가 합성된 I형 강거더의 휨거동 특성)

  • Static loading test was performed on a composite girder with an I-shaped steel girder and SUPER concrete on the top of the steel in order to evaluate flexural behavior characteristics. Total length of the test specimen was 25m long and the depth was 786mm including compressive concrete section('casing' hereafter) with 80MPa strength. 4-point loading on simply-supported beam was applied up to 2,010kN. Results showed that yield strength at tensile steel was 2.7 times greater than service load and the ratio of ductility was 1.481. No cracks were found on the casing surface and the relative slip between different sections was insignificant.

Surrogate Model-Based Global Sensitivity Analysis of an I-Shape Curved Steel Girder Bridge under Seismic Loads (지진하중을 받는 I형 곡선거더 단경간 교량의 대리모델 기반 전역 민감도 분석)

  • Purpose: The dynamic behavior of a bridge structure under seismic loading depends on many uncertainties, such as the nature of the seismic waves and the material and geometric properties. However, not all uncertainties have a significant impact on the dynamic behavior of a bridge structure. Since probabilistic seismic performance evaluation considering even low-impact uncertainties is computationally expensive, the uncertainties should be identified by considering their impact on the dynamic behavior of the bridge. Therefore, in this study, a global sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the main parameters affecting the dynamic behavior of bridges with I-curved girders. Method: Considering the uncertainty of the earthquake and the material and geometric uncertainty of the curved bridge, a finite element analysis was performed, and a surrogate model was developed based on the analysis results. The surrogate model was evaluated using performance metrics such as coefficient of determination, and finally, a global sensitivity analysis based on the surrogate model was performed. Result: The uncertainty factors that have the greatest influence on the stress response of the I-curved girder under seismic loading are the peak ground acceleration (PGA), the height of the bridge (h), and the yield stress of the steel (fy). The main effect sensitivity indices of PGA, h, and fy were found to be 0.7096, 0.0839, and 0.0352, respectively, and the total sensitivity indices were found to be 0.9459, 0.1297, and 0.0678, respectively. Conclusion: The stress response of the I-shaped curved girder is dominated by the uncertainty of the input motions and is strongly influenced by the interaction effect between each uncertainty factor. Therefore, additional sensitivity analysis of the uncertainty of the input motions, such as the number of input motions and the intensity measure(IM), and a global sensitivity analysis considering the structural uncertainty, such as the number and curvature of the curved girders, are required.

  • A new type of bridge superstructures referred to as Steel-confined Prestressed Concrete Girder (SCP Girder) was developed, which is composed of concrete, steel plate, and prestressing tendon. The girder may maximize structural advantages of these components : thus, long span bridges with low height girder may be constructed. For the effective design and fabrication of the girder, the design software program was developed and the process of fabrication established. The experimental girder designed using the program was manufactured in actual size to confirm the fabric ability of the girder. Propriety of design, structural safety, and applicability of the girder were verified through the load test.

  • This study focus on the development of optimization techniques to prestressed concrete box girder bridges erected in cantilever construction method. Optimization techniques are used to find optimal cross sections, i.e., those having minimum cost for such bridges. The problem is treated as an unconstrained nonlinear programming problem and the program has been developed to compute the objective function and optimal value. Numerical results are verified by the data of existing bridges.

  • In this study, both experimental and analytical study for behavior of the existing composite steel box girder bridges, constructed along with the procedure of continuous placing slab, are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model. The layer approach is adopted to determine the equilibrium condition in a section to consider the different material properties and concrete cracking across the sectional depth, and the beam element stiffness is constructed on the basis of the assumed displacement field formulation and the 3-points Gaussian Integration. In addition, the effects of creep and shrinkage of concrete for time-dependent behavior of the bridge are taken into consideration. Finally, both analytical and experimental results are compared.

  • It is required efficient section shape like bulb-tee girders with high strength concrete to construct long span bridges economically. However, the trpical design method for PSC I-girders include bulb-tees, the concrete girder prestressed only one time at same time. But in this paper, new design method prestress increases as each load-stress stage. The incrementally prestressed concrete (IPC) girders can reduce the required area of grider section and extend span length by additional prestress. So it is able to construct long span bridges economically by using IPC girders.
