  • In this paper, the error and its sources in manufacturing of bourdon tube pressure gage was studied, and the method to reduce such errors was discussed. In more detail, the effects of parallelism of rollers, spring back, uniformity of radius curvature and the ratio of circumferential speeds of rollers were invesrti- gated. As a reselt, we could find out that the aprallelism of roller affected to the displacement error at the free end of gage and that the amount of spring back was closely related with the ratio of circumferential speeds of rollers. The uniformity of curvature radius was determined by the distance between bending rollers and it was comparatively uniform in the range above 30 .deg. C from the both sides of tube. Also, the ratio of circumfer-ential speeds of rollers was finded out as a very important factor giving severe influence on the creep or the hysteresis of bourdon tube.

  • This paper deals with error compensation in current transformers. Since the exciting current can be considered as the main error source, its evaluation can allow the compensation of its detrimental effects to be obtained. The exciting current required by the transformer in every king of steady state operation can be determined by simply acquiring the secondary current, provided that the examined CT has been preliminarily identified. This paper also proposed a new approach to the model of the exciting branch. The exciting branch can be divided into a non-linear core loss resistor, and a non-linear magnetizing inductor whose flux and current characteristic is not the same as the characteristic shown by the joined tips of the first quadrant of a family of hysteresis loops. The performance of the proposed algorithm was validated under various conditions using EMTP generated data. Test result show, in all cases an improvement in primary current reproduction accuracy, compared with that achieved using CT's ratio.

  • This paper describes the design, evaluation and implementation of a compensating algorithm for an iron-cored measurement current transformer (CT) that removes the effects of the hysteresis characteristics of the iron-core. The exciting current resulting from the hysteresis characteristics of the core causes an error of the CT. The proposed algorithm decomposes the exciting current into the core loss current and the magnetizing current and each of them is estimated. The core loss current is calculated from the secondary voltage and the voltage-core loss current curve. The core flux linkage is calculated and then inserted into the flux-magnetizing current curve to estimate the magnetizing current. The exciting current at every sampling interval is obtained by summing the core loss and magnetizing currents and then added to the measured current to obtain the correct secondary current. The voltage-core loss current curve and flux-magnetizing current curves, which are different from the conventional curves, are derived in this paper. The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated under various conditions using EMTP generated data. The experimental test results of an iron-core type electronic CT, which consists of the iron-core and the compensation board, are also included. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm can improve the accuracy of the measurement CT significantly, and thus reduce the size and the cost of the CT.

  • Magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) rotatory dampers are normally used for controlling the constant rotation of machines and engines. In this research, such a device is proposed to act as variable stiffness device to alleviate the rotational oscillation existing in the many engineering applications, such as motor. Under such thought, the main purpose of this work is to characterize the nonlinear torque-angular displacement/angular velocity responses of an MRF based variable stiffness device in oscillatory motion. A rotational hysteresis model, consisting of a rotatory spring, a rotatory viscous damping element and an error function-based hysteresis element, is proposed, which is capable of describing the unique dynamical characteristics of this smart device. To estimate the optimal model parameters, a modified whale optimization algorithm (MWOA) is employed on the captured experimental data of torque, angular displacement and angular velocity under various excitation conditions. In MWOA, a nonlinear algorithm parameter updating mechanism is adopted to replace the traditional linear one, enhancing the global search ability initially and the local search ability at the later stage of the algorithm evolution. Additionally, the immune operation is introduced in the whale individual selection, improving the identification accuracy of solution. Finally, the dynamic testing results are used to validate the performance of the proposed model and the effectiveness of the proposed optimization algorithm.

  • A current transformer(CT) should provide the faithful reproduction of the primary current to the measurement or the protection equipments. The exciting current resulting from the hysteresis characteristics of the core causes an error between the primary current and the secondary current of the CT. A compensating algorithm for the secondary current of the current transformer that removes the effects of the hysteresis characteristics of the iron-core has proposed. The core flux linkage is calculated by integrating the measured secondary current, and then inserted into the flux-magnetizing current curve to obtain the magnetizing current. The exciting current at every sampling interval is obtained by summing the core-loss and magnetizing currents and added to the measured current to obtain the correct current. This paper describes the innovative new product of the iron-cored electronic current transformer. This product composes an iron-cored CT and an intelligent electronic device(IED) ported the compensating algorithm. The test results of the iron-cored electronic current transformers in Korea Electro-technology Research Institute(KERI) are presented.

  • A load cell is a converter that generates voltage signals when a certain force is effected in a given direction. An essential measurement device for electronic scales that indicate weight by numbers. These load cells are being applied in various areas such as daily life, distribution, laboratory and industrial. Recently the study to manufacture load cells in a more simple method while increasing performance is being persisted. In this study based on the comparison of load cells manufactured through single surface processing using strain gauges. Those manufactured through dual surface processing using strain gauges. Ultimately persist a more simple method of load cell manufacturing while increasing its performance. The elements that were compared were linearity, hysteresis, creep and eccentricity which are short tenn performance factors. The conclusion was that single surface processing showed almost identical data as that of dual surface processing, and the load cell error rate(0.005%) also excess regulation. The manufacturing time was shortened while mass-production was possible. Which indicates a development in the weighing industry.

  • Many Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) methods have been proposed for structural damage diagnosis and prognosis. However, SHM for pinched hysteretic structures can be problematic due to the high level of nonlinearity. The model-free hysteresis loop analysis (HLA) has displayed notable robustness and accuracy in identifying damage for full-scaled and scaled test buildings. In this paper, the performance of HLA is compared with seven other SHM methods in identifying lateral elastic stiffness for a six-story numerical building with highly nonlinear pinching behavior. Two successive earthquakes are employed to compare the accuracy and consistency of methods within and between events. Robustness is assessed across sampling rates 50-1000 Hz in noise-free condition and then assessed with 10% root mean square (RMS) noise added to responses at 250 Hz sampling rate. Results confirm HLA is the most robust method to sampling rate and noise. HLA preserves high accuracy even when the sampling rate drops to 50 Hz, where the performance of other methods deteriorates considerably. In noisy conditions, the maximum absolute estimation error is less than 4% for HLA. The overall results show HLA has high robustness and accuracy for an extremely nonlinear, but realistic case compared to a range of leading and recent model-based and model-free methods.

  • High-damping rubber bearings (HDRB) are commonly used as seismic isolation devices to protect civil engineering structures from earthquakes. However, the nonlinear hysteresis characteristics of the HDRB, such as their dependence on material properties and hardening phenomena, make predicting their behavior during earthquakes difficult. This study proposes a hysteretic model that can accurately predicts the behavior of shear deformation considering the nonlinearity when designing the seismic isolation structures using HDR bearings. To model the hysteretic characteristics of the HDR, dynamic loading tests were performed by applying sinusoidal and random waves on scaled-down specimens. The test results show that the nonlinear characteristics of the HDR strongly correlate with the shear strain experienced in the past. Furthermore, when shear deformation occurred above a certain level, the hardening phenomenon, wherein the stiffness increased rapidly, was confirmed. Based on the experimental results, the dynamic characteristics of the HDR, equivalent stiffness, equivalent damping ratio, and strain energy were quantitatively evaluated and analyzed. In this study, an improved bilinear HDR model that can reproduce the dependence on shear deformation and hardening phenomena was developed. Additionally, by proposing an objective parameter-setting procedure based on the experimental results, the model was devised such that similar parameters could be set by anyone. Further, an actual dynamic analysis could be performed by modeling with minimal parameters. The proposed model corresponded with the experimental results and successfully reproduced the mechanical characteristics evaluated from experimental results within an error margin of 10%.

  • This paper introduces a new hybrid structural connection joint that combines shear walls with section steel beams, fundamentally resolving the construction complexity issue of requiring pre-embedded connectors in the connection between shear walls and steel beams. Initially, a quasi-static loading scheme with load-deformation dual control was employed to conduct low-cycle repeated loading experiments on five new connection joints. Data was acquired using displacement and strain gauges to compare the energy dissipation coefficients of each specimen. The destruction process of the new connection joints was meticulously observed and recorded, delineating it into three stages. Hysteresis curves and skeleton curves of the joint specimens were plotted based on experimental results, summarizing the energy dissipation performance of the joints. It's noteworthy that the addition of shear walls led to an approximate 17% increase in the energy dissipation coefficient. The energy dissipation coefficients of dog-bone-shaped connection joints with shear walls and cover plates reached 2.043 and 2.059, respectively, exhibiting the most comprehensive hysteresis curves. Additionally, the impact of laminated steel plates covering composite concrete floors on the stiffness of semi-rigid joint ends under excessive stretching should not be disregarded. A comparison with finite element analysis results yielded an error of merely 2.2%, offering substantial evidence for the wide-ranging application prospects of this innovative joint in seismic performance.
