Analysis of Chlorine Species in Chlorine Dioxide Bleaching Liquor and Generation Process by UV-VIS Spectroscopy

  • In this paper the extinction coefficients of molecule chlorine ($Cl_2$), chlorine dioxide (ClO$_2$), hypochlorous acid (HClO), chlorous acid ($HClO_2$$_2$) were determined using a PDA UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Based on these, the concentrations of $Cl_2$, $ClO_2$, and HClO in general chlorine dioxide bleaching liquor can be measured. The concentrations of $Cl_2$, $ClO_2$ and $HClO_2$ produced during the generation of methanol based chlorine dioxide generator can also be determined use the same method. The method was thought to be able to give more information in chlorine dioxide bleaching chemistry if combine its use with titration and ion chromatography.

논문 - 바이오가스화 도입을 위한 양돈농가 가축분뇨 발생 및 특성분석 (Generation and Characteristics Analysis of Swine Manure for Introducing Biogas System)

  • The 21 livestock farms considering future installation of biogas systems were studied. These farms were examined how to raise the livestock, to treat manure, to operate facility with respect to manure characteristics. The 15 farms out of 21 farms have applied to the marine dumping and consignment treatment for treating manure and even farms which have equipped liquid fertilizing system have less capacity facility than legal standards. Characteristics of manure were affected by the scale of swine barn, clean water usage, frequency of cleaning, cleaning method, feces-urine separating method, etc. Retention time in storage (over 20 days) has resulted in lower concentration of organic matter which could reduce biogas production. This indicates that systematic barn management system is required. Inhibition tests showed that disinfectant and citric acid did not affected digestion rates at 10 times higher concentration than recommendation. However hypochlorous acid is likely to affect the anaerobic microbial activity.

전기분해에 의한 잔류염소 생성 예측 모델 개발 (Model development for chlorine generation using electrolysis)

  • Electrolysis produces hypochlorous acid by using a small quantity of NaCl as electrolyte. This process maximizes the stabilization of drinking water through the control of chlorine residual concentration. This study investigated free chlorine generation by an electrolytic method using $Ti/IrO_2$ and stainless steel. The generation of free chlorine was increased with increasing hydraulic retention time, voltage, chlorine ion concentration and the number of electrodes. However, the change of pH did not affect the generation of free chlorine. There was no significant difference on the behavior of chlorine concentration between electrolytic method and NaOCl injection. In this study, the concentration of free chlorine predicted model based on power functional model was developed various under conditions. Electrolysis free chlorine generation model can be effective tool in the estimation of free chlorine generation.

Comparison of Spectrophotometric, HPLC and Chemilumines­cence Methods for 3-Nitrotyrosine and Peroxynitrite Interaction

  • We have studied the interaction of 3-nitrotyrosine with peroxynitrite using three different methods; chemiluminescence, spectrophotometry and HPLC. Peroxynitrite-induced luminol or lucigenin chemiluminescence were significantly decreased by 3-nitrotyrosine, in concentration­dependent manners. The intensity of the peroxynitrite spectrum was also markedly reduced in the presence of 3-nitrotyrosine in the spectrophometric assay. However, there was no attenuation of the 3-nitrotyrosine signal in the HPLC assay after mixing with peroxynitrite. The interaction of 3-nitrotyrosine and hypochlorous acid (HOCI) was also studied via the chemilumines-cence assay, where the HOCI-induced responses were markedly inhibited by 3-nitrotyrosine. These results suggest that caution should be taken when studying the levels or interactions of 3-nitrotyrosine.

동전기-펜턴 공정에서 전해질의 전극반응이 처리효율에 미치는 영향 (Role of Electrode Reaction of Electrolyte in Electrokinetic-Fenton Process for Phenanthrene Removal)

  • Phenanthrene 오염토양 정화를 위한 동전기-펜턴 공정에서, 전해질의 종류와 전극반응에 따른 전기삼투유량의 변화와 오염물의 분해율을 관찰하였다. 전압경사는 초기에 감소하였다가 다시 증가하였는데, 이는 전류가 공급됨에 따라 이 온이 토양 내로 유입되어 전도도가 증가하였다가, 전기삼투 및 전기이동 현상에 의해 이온이 유출수를 통하여 빠져 나가 토양 내의 이온 농도가 다시 감소하여 전도도가 감소하였기 때문이다 총 전기삼투유량은 $NaCl>KH_2PO_4>MgSO_4$의 순서로 나타났는데, 이는 같은 몰농도(M)에서 $MgSO_4$의 이온세기가 다른 전해질보다 높았기 때문이다. 과산화수소를 첨가했을 경우는, 첨가하지 않은 경우보다 펜턴 반응에 의한 산화분해로 제거율이 향상되었다. NaCl의 경우, 양극 전극조에서 전극 반응에 의해 생성된 염소 가스($Cl_2$)가 산성조건에서 용해되어 형성된 하이포아염소산 (HClO)이 오염물의 산화분해를 증가시켜 다른 전해질보다 높은 제거율을 나타내었다. 따라서 동전기-펜턴 공정에서 제거율을 향상시키기 위해서는, 전해질이 토양 내에서 동전기적 이동 메커니즘에 미치는 영향과 더불어 양극 전극조에서의 전극 반응에 의한 생성물의 특성 또한 고려되어야 한다.

산성 pH 조건에서 차아염소산나트륨의 항균 활성 향상 (Enhanced Antibacterial Activity of Sodium Hypochlorite under Acidic pH Condition)

  • 차아염소산나트륨(NaClO)은 병원 및 식품산업 분야에서 널리 사용되는 소독제로 세균, 곰팡이, 바이러스에 대해서도 항균 활성이 있다. 차아염소산나트륨의 항균 활성은 용액의 pH에 의해 조절되는 안정적인 HClO 농도의 유지에 있다. 차아염소산(HClO)은 화학적으로 중성이므로 세균의 막에 쉽게 침투할 수 있으며 차아염소산나트륨의 항균 활성은 차아염소산염 이온(ClO-)보다는 용액 내 HClO 농도에 의존하리라 사료된다. 본 연구에서 pH 조절에 따른 차아염소산나트륨의 항균 활성을 time kill test와 차아염소산나트륨 처리 전후의 활성산소종(ROS) 및 ATP 농도 변화로 조사하였다. 또한 전계방출형 주사 전자 현미경(FE-SEM)을 통하여 세포벽의 파괴정도를 확인하였다. pH 5 조건에서 5 ppm 차아염소산나트륨은 Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) 균에 대하여 99.9%의 항균 활성을 나타내었고, ROS 생성량은 pH 7 조건보다 48% 증가하였다. 또한, pH 5 조건의 차아염소산나트륨에 노출된 E. coli와 S. aureus의 ATP 농도가 각각 94%와 91% 감소하였다. FE-SEM 결과, pH 5 조건에 노출된 균의 세포벽이 파괴된 것을 확인하였다. 본 연구결과를 종합해보면, pH를 조절하는 것 만으로 5 ppm 농도의 차아염소산나트륨의 항균 활성을 향상시킬 수 있음을 시사한다.

잔류염소 측정용 전기화학센서의 유효성 (Effectiveness of the Electrochemical Sensor for the Free Chlorine Measurement)

  • Sodium hypochlorite is used worldwide as a water disinfectant and in bleaching agent. Sodium hypochlorite applied to water initially undergoes hydrolysis to form free chlorine consisting of hypochlorous acid(HOCl) and hypochlorite ion($OCl^-$). For free chlorine determination, an electrochemical method is simple due to the electroactivity of free chlorine; it measures current and is free of most reagents. Amperometric free chlorine sensor has been developed with gold (Au)-based electrode. The 3-electrode free chlorine sensor whose working and counter electrodes were Pt exhibited excellent response to HClO at +400mV vs. Ag/AgCl/sat. KCl. In addition, the use of a pH error correction algorithm provided a reliable measurement of residual free chlorine in water sample without any pretreatment in the normal pH range(pH 6~8) of municipal water supply. The free chlorine sensor installed in on-line monitoring system could be used to continually monitor the level of residual free chlorine in real samples.

Developing numerical method to predict the removal of Microcystin-LR in a clear well

  • Microcystin-LR, one of algal toxins induced by the eutrophication of a reservoir, is known to be harmful to human by adversely affecting our liver and brain. Hypochlorous acid is very efficient to remove Microcystin-LR in a clear well. The previous researches showed that CT, pH and temperature affected removal rate in batch tests. It was noted that hydrodynamic properties of clear well could also influence its removal rate. A mathematical model was built using an axial dispersion reactor model and software was used to simulate the removal rate. The model consisted of the second order differential equations including dispersion, convection, Microcystin-LR reaction with chlorine. Kinetic constants were obtained through batch tests with chlorine. They were $0.430{\times}10^{-3}L/mg/sec$ and $0.143{\times}10^{-3}L/mg/sec$ for pH 7.0 and 8.1, respectively. The axial dispersion reactor model was shown to be useful for the numerical model through conservative tracer tests. The numerical model successfully estimated the removal rate of Microcyctin-LR in a clear well. Numerical simulations showed that a small dispersion number, low pH and long hydraulic retention time were critical for higher removal rate with same chlorine dosage. This model could be used to optimize the operation of a clear well during an eutrophication season.

염소에 의한 bacteriophage f2의 살균작용 (Inactivation of Bacteriophage f2 with Chlorine)

  • Chlorine was used for inactivation of bacteriophage f2 at pH 5.5, 7.5, and 10.0 at $10^{\circ}C$. The inactivation rate phage with chlorine varied depending on the pH value and reaction time. Hypochlorous acid appeared to be the major species of free chlorine for the inactivation. Suevival of the phage treated with chlorine and infectivity of the RNA extracted from the chlorinated phage were examined. The RNA extracted from untreatd phage was chlorinated and its infectivity was assayed. All three samples showed similar rates of inactivation at pH 5.5 and 7.5, but the naked RNA was more susceptible to chlorine at pH 10.0. The rate of inactivation was compared naked RNA was more susceptible to chlorine at pH 10.0. The rate of inactivation was compared with specific and non-specific attachment of the phasge f2. The specific attachment of the phage increased after the phage had been inactivated by extended chlorination. Chlorine may penetrate to the becteriophage f2 by altering the structural integrity of the protein coat, but the main target of free chlorine for inactivation of the phage appeared to be the phage RNA.

전해수의 특성에 관한 연구 (The Study of Characteristics of Electrolytic Water)

  • Electrolytic water(EW), studied in recent decades in the Japan, Russia and United State of America, have shown promise as a method of disinfection whereby low levels of free chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, or hypochlorous acid may be produced in situ in Nacl-containing solution. These methods have shown promise in destruction of microorganisms in medical, dental environment, and in the agriculture and food industry. A recently EW treatment system was evaluated for reducing scouring agent and other surfactants in the washing and scouring process of textile industry Unfortunately, there is, to my knowledge, no serious studies of the properties of EW for textile industry In order to study the characteristics of EW and confirm the possibility of applications in textile industry processes, the pH, surface activity, penetration force, surface tension, and contact angle of EW was measured under various conditions. In general terms, What all this shows is that there is fundamental difference between the properties of EW and that of distilled water.
