Objectives There was a correlation between respiratory index and Profile of Mood States (POMS). However, no study has examined the relationship between hyperventilation and POMS. Therefore, this study showed differences in POMS subscales and respiratory patterns between hyperventilation group and normal group. Methods 20 healthy men and women were to complete Nijmegen and Korean-Profile of Mood States(K-POMS) questionnaire aimed at subjects (13 men, 12 women). By attaching a capnometer to the nasal cavity portion, end-tidal $PCO_2$ was measured. Also, marker was attached at Zhangmen, Juque, Shuifen. The movement of the marker was taken as a web cam. Statistical analysis Mann Whitney U test was used for the nonparametric methods. Results In the subscale of K-POMS were significant differences(Tension-0.001, Anger-0.007, Fatigue-0.002, Depression -0.004) between the normal group and the group with the hyperventilation. In addition, between the two groups were obtained a significant result(0.046) in the movement of the Shuifen acupoint. Conclusions Nijmegen questionnaire score is higher, the higher negative subscale scores of K-POMS. Also, differences in Nijmegen questionnaire score may help to determine the presence or absence of the abdominal breathing.

Objective: To report a case of a patient with a psychosomatic disorder who complained of hyperventilation and was treated with oriental medical treatments and emotional freedom techniques (EFTs). Methods: The patient was diagnosed as having a psychosomatic disorder through an interview and several psychological tests, such as the house-tree-person (HTP) and the person in the rain (PITR) tests. We treated the patient with oriental medical treatments that included herbal medications, western medications, moxibustion, cupping, and EFT. Results: After the treatments, the clinical symptoms of the patient were improved. Conclusions: Oriental medical treatments and EFT may be effective treatments for psychosomatic disorders.
Hyperventilation (HV) is routinely induced in order to activate brain waves during an electroencephalogram (EEG). The aim of this study was to examine the effects of HV conditions on EEG and suggested basic data for the standardized procedure. Three degrees of HV were induced for 5 minutes with a ventilation volume of 160 ml/min (control group), 240 ml/min, and 300 ml/min in rats. Powers of delta, theta, alpha, and beta waves were examined by a quantitative EEG. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the powers of all EEG waves between the control and 240 ml/min groups. However, a notable change in EEG powers during HV induced by a ventilation volume of 300 ml/min was observed in the frontal cerebral region as follows: power of the delta was increased by 12.8% (p<0.01), powers of the theta, alpha and beta were decreased by 41.3% (p<0.01), 48.6% (p<0.05), and 41.9% (p<0.05), respectively. Therefore, it is concluded that an increase of about 90% of the normal ventilation volume might be adequate for the hyperventilation, and a useful parameter for evaluation of the qualified hyperventilation might be an alteration of the frontal EEG powers.
The Authors report a case of sleep paralysis patient who is 25-years old man. He complained that he has been experiencing episode "being suffocated" during sleep and could not move by himself while semiconsciousness state. He was a only son of divorced parents and could not attach anybody from yong childhood. His symptoms was began intermittently after his early teens. Medical history and physical examination revealed no significant finding. A nocturnal polysomnogram showed loss of muscle tone during terminal REM period and sudden hyperventilation attack followed by wake-up. Psychosocial stress and insufficient sleep were presumed to be an etiological factors. Imipramine 50mg per day almost completely relieved symptoms.

Background: The consequences of disordered breathing patterns are not only distressing to the patient but also expensive to our health care systems if they are not diagnosed and treated. So we performed this study to investigate clinical significants trough gigong, yoga and hyperventilation in oriental medicine and westen medicine Method: Voluntary control of respiration is one of the main methods of physical and mental training such as meditation, qigong meditation or Yoga. So, this study focuses on breathing in qigong and yoga. This study appreciates a role that a control of respiration has in physical, mental aspects and searches side-effects in qigong and yoga Conclusions: A control of respiration has a function that manages Jung(精), Qi(氣), Shin(神) in Oriental Medicine. It manages Autonomic Nerve system, Endocrine system and induces natural awareness. So Briging the body and mind work through a control of breathing. Breathing pattern disorder has Damum and Qiher pattern in Oriental Medicine pattern. This disease pattern concearnes ATP metabolism. Qiher is concearned with a mitochondria disorder and Damum is concearned with a products of lactate. we guess that Lactate analysis may be utilized as a diagonostic criteria of Breathing pattern disorder. After this, It needs a study that Lactate analysis is concearned with Breathing pattern disorder as Damum pattern. Result: A control of respiration is related not only breathing but also spiritual and physical state. Joo-hwa-ip-ma as Breathing pattern disorder is smiliar to hyperventilation. HVS is patternated Damum and Qi-Weakness pattern in oriental medicine. Lactate is an important complement that diagonates HVS and will be concearned with Damum.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical application of oriental medical treatment to a patient with hypeventilation syndrome developed after traffic accident. Hypeventilation syndrome is a kind of psychosomatic disorder. Typical complaints are tachypnea, palpitation, paresthesia, muscle spasm and tetany. We treated the patient with herbal medication, physical therapy, acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, etc. In acute hyperventilation attack, we used bloodletting therapy(+宣, shihhsuan), cupping therapy(B40, B57), emergency treatment with paper bag rebreathing and herbal medication in order to tranquilize. After 2 months of oriental medical treatment, we obtained good improvement in patient's state. This results suggest that oriental medical treatment has the positive effects on a patient with hyperventilation syndrome.
Objectives: Uwhangchungsim-won(UC) has been used in the treatment of a wide variety of conditions including stroke, hypertension, arterosclerosis, autonomic imbalance, and mental instability, in Korean traditional hospitals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of DC on cerebral hemodynamics and to determine the appropriate dosage. Methods: We studied changes in hyperventilation-induced cerebrovascular reactivity and mean blood flow velocity of the middle cerebral arteries(MCAs) were studied by means of transcranial Doppler ultrasound. Changes in mean blood pressure, pulse rate and expiratory CO2(PECO2) were observed using Cardiocap TM/5. Six healthy young volunteers who were administrated with full doses of DC for group A, and half doses for group B. Six other healthy subjects comprised the control group. The evaluation was performed during basal condition, and repeated at 20, 40, 60, 120, and 180 minutes after administration. Results: Increases of cerebrovascular reactivity and mean blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery in group A were significantly different compared with group B and the control group (p<0.1). Mean blood pressure, pulse rate and expiratory CO2 did not change during the observation and were not different among these three groups. We observed that in cerebrovascular reactivity induced hyperventilation, group A was most effective at 40 minutes after administration, and its effectiveness lasted for 120 minutes. Conclusions: This study provides evidence for UC, in full doses, as an agent for dilation of the cerebral arteriols to increase hyperventilation-induced cerebrovascular reactivity as a consequence of faster recovery of blood flow velocity.
Ventilatory responses to inhaled $CO_2$ were measured during continuous negative pressure breathing (CNPB) in awake dogs. End expiratory lung volume (EELV) decreased linearly with pressure level during CNPB (correlation coefficient= 0.81, p<0.005) during air breathing. When CNPB was applied during 5% $CO_2$ inhalation, the decrease in EELV was not significantly different (p<0.5) from that during air breathing. As a result of a lowered EELV, tidal volume ($V_T$) significantly decreased by 22% and breathing frequency ($f_B$) increased by 68% in the steady state during air breathing (p<0.0001). These responses were similar during 5% $CO_2$ inhalation, thus the $CO_2$ response curve measured during CNPB shifted upward without a change in sensitivity (p>0.05). These results indicate additive effects of CNPB and $CO_2$ inhalation. The degree of hyperventilation during CNPB at eupnea was estimated to be 63% of that during control ventilation and was significantly greater than zero (p<0.0001), which suggests an alveolar hyperventilation due to CNPB. These results suggest that the mechanical alterations associated with n decrease in lung volume could play an important role in ventilatory control independently of chemical regulation of breathing. Thus, exercise hyperpnea, which is associated with a lowered functional residual capacity (FRC), may in part be explained by this mechanical stimulation of breathing.

Objectives Nijmegen Questionnaire is one tool used internationally to evaluate hyperventilation syndrome. However, there is a necessity of developing Korean version of the Nijmegen Questionnaire, as the questionnaire of the original one are written in English, marking it hard to apply for Korean patients. So as a first step, we conducted a cross-cultural translation of the Nijmegen Questionnaire into Korean and verification of content validity. Methods We translated the Nijmegen Questionnaire into Korean up to guidelines of cross-cultural adaptation. We conducted a survey with 45 subjects to get content validity, using the translated questionnaire. Results About the translated Nijmegen Questionnaire, 28 out of 45 subjects replied that they had no difficulty understanding them, while 17 were pointed out ambiguous items and 7 offered ideas about ambiguous expressions of them. Upon further examination of five Korean Medical doctors, one sentence was additionally modified in the translated version. Conclusions We translated and adapted cross-culturally the original Nijmegen Questionnaire to develop a Korean version in accordance with internationally accepted guidelines. Then we conducted a survey for content validity with the translated questionnaire and gathered opinions from those questioned. After going through some examining and correcting procedures based on the opinions, we finalized the Korean version of Nijmegen Questionnaire. It will also require a follow-up verification process to prove reliability and validity of the final version of the Korean version of Nijmegen Questionnaire.
Transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) is a useful diagnostic method to measure cerebral blood flow velocity in various cerebral disorders. However, we haven't data enough to be available for young persons, especially in the twenties in Korea. This study was performed to collect the basic data of the cerebral blood flow velocity and to understand the cerebral physiology in the twenties. We determined the mean velocities of middle, anterior, and posterior cerebral artery, and vertebral and basilar artery (MCA-V, ACA-V, PCA-V, VA-V, and BA-V, respectively) in eighty-two healthy volunteers. For evaluating cerebral autoregulation, only the MCA- V was measured under various conditions such as stable, apnea, and hyperventilation state. Right and left MCA-V were 80.66±14.03 and 83.22±14.40 cm/sec at stable state, 90.13±17.47 and 90.26±16.38 cm/sec at apnea, and 54.83±11.09 and 55.33±10.74 cm/sec at hyperventilation. Right and left ACA-V were 49.11±15.71 and 48.19±13.75 cm/sec. Right and left PCA-V were 39.44±9.12 and 37.91±6.74 cm/sec. Right and left VA-V were 33.65±9.26 and 36.l8±10.39 cm/sec. BA-V was 48.49±11.16 cm/sec. Right and left MCA- V, V A-V, and right ACA- V and PCA- V in women were higher than those of men (P<0.05). No significant differences were found between men and women in the others. These findings indicate that cerebral hemodynamics and autoregulation were normal in young people in their twenties. The velocities of MCA, ACA, PCA, and BA were high values in women as compared with men.
