  • Image fusion is defined as making new image by merging two or more images using special algorithms. In case of remote sensing, it means fusing multispectral low-resolution remotely sensed image with panchromatic high-resolution image. Generally, hyperspectral image fusion is accomplished by utilizing fusion technique of multispectral imagery or spectral unmixing model. But, the former may distort spectral information and the latter needs endmember data or additional data, and has a problem with not preserving spatial information well. This study proposes a new algorithm based on two stage spectral unmixing model for preserving hyperspectral image's spectral information. The proposed fusion technique is implemented and tested using Hyperion and ALI images. it is shown to work well on maintaining more spatial/spectral information than the PCA/GS fusion algorithms.

  • This paper showed how to analysis the object-based classification for wildfire fuel type map using Hyperion hyperspectral remote sensing data acquired in April, 2002 and compared the results of the object-based classification with the results of the pixel-based classification. Our methodological approach for wildfire fuel type map firstly processed correcting abnormal pixels and atypical bands and also calibrating atmospheric noise for enhanced image quality. Fuel type map is characterized by the results of the spectral mixture analysis(SMA). Object-based approach was based on segment-based endmember selection, while pixel-based method used standard SMA. To validate and compare, we used true-color high resolution orthoimagery.

  • Plant water deficiency during drought season causes physiological stress and can be a critical indicator of forest fire vulnerability. In this study, we attempt to analyze the spectral characteristics of water stressed vegetation by using the laboratory measurement on leaf samples and the canopy reflectance spectra extracted from satellite hyperspectral image data. Leaf-level reflectance spectra were measured by varying moisture content using a portable spectro-radiometer. Canopy reflectance spectra of sample forest stands of two primary species (pine and oak) located in central part of the Korean peninsula were extracted from EO-l Hyperion imaging spectrometer data obtained during the drought season in 2001 and the normal precipitation year in 2002. The preliminary analysis on the reflectance spectra shows that the spectral characteristics of leaf samples are not compatible with the ones obtained from canopy level. Although moisture content of vegetation can be influential to the radiant flux reflected from leaf-level, it may not be very straightforward to obtain the spectral characteristics that are directly related to the level of canopy moisture content. Canopy spectra form forest stands can be varied by structural variables (such as LAt, percent coverage, and biomass) other than canopy moisture content.

  • This study focuses on co-registration and band selection, which are one of the pre-processing steps to apply the change detection technique using hyperspectral images. We carried out automatic co-registration by using the SIFT algorithm which performance was already established in the computer vision fields, and selected the bands fur change detection by estimating the noise of image through the PIFs reflecting the radiometric consistency. The EM algorithm was also applied to select the band objectively. Hyperion images were used for the proposed techniques, and non-calibrated bands and striping noises contained in Hyperion image were removed. Throughout the results, we could develop the reliable co-registration procedure which coincided with accuracy within 0.2 pixels (RMSE) for change detection, and verified that band selection depending on the visual inspection could be objective by extracting the PIFs.

  • Support Vector Machine (SVM) which has roots in a statistical learning theory is a training algorithm based on structural risk minimization. Generally, SVM algorithm uses the kernel for determining a linearly non-separable boundary and classifying the data. But, classical kernels can not apply to effectively the hyperspectral image classification because it measures similarity using vector's dot-product or euclidian distance. So, This paper proposes the spectral similarity kernel to solve this problem. The spectral similariy kernel that calculate both vector's euclidian and angle distance is a local kernel, it can effectively consider a reflectance property of hyperspectral image. For validating our algorithm, SVM which used polynomial kernel, RBF kernel and proposed kernel was applied to land cover classification in Hyperion image. It appears that SVM classifier using spectral similarity kernel has the most outstanding result in qualitative and spatial estimation.

  • In the middle-resolution remote sensing, the Ground Sampled Distance (GSD) that the detector senses and samples is generally larger than the actual size of the objects (or materials) of interest, and so several objects are embedded in a single pixel. In this case, as it is impossible to detect these objects by the conventional spatial-based image processing techniques, it has to be carried out at sub-pixel level through spectral properties. In this paper, we explain the sub-pixel analysis algorithm, also known as the Linear Spectral Mixing (LSM) model, which has been experimented using the Hyperion data. To find Endmembers used as the prior knowledge for LSM model, we applied the concept of the convex geometry on the two-dimensional scatter plot. The Atmospheric Correction and Minimum Noise Fraction techniques are presented for the pre-processing of Hyperion data. As LSM model is the simplest approach in sub-pixel analysis, the results of our experiment is not good. But we intend to say that the sub-pixel analysis shows much more information in comparison with the image classification.

  • In the middle -resolution remote sensing, the Ground Sampled Distance(GSD) sensed and sampled by the detector is generally larger than the size of objects(or materials) of interest, in which case several objects are embedded in a single pixel and cannot be detected spatially. This study is intended to solve this problem of a hyperspectral data with high spectral resolution. We examined the detection algorithm, Linear Spectral Mixing Model, and also made a test on the Hyperion data. To find class Endmembers, we applied two methods, Spectral Library and Geometric Model, and compared them with each other.

  • In this paper, we propose the unsupervised change detection algorithm that apply the similarity measure techniques to the hyperspectral image. The general similarity measures including euclidean distance and spectral angle were compared. The spectral similarity scale algorithm for reducing the problems of those techniques was studied and tested with Hyperion data. The thresholds for detecting the change area were estimated through EM(Expectation-Maximization) algorithm. The experimental result shows that the similarity measure techniques and EM algorithm can be applied effectively for the unsupervised change detection of the hyperspectral data.

  • The purpose of this study is focused on the development of the effective classification technique using ultra multiband of hyperspectral image. This study suggests the classification technique using canonical correlation analysis, one of multivariate statistical analysis in hyperspectral image classification. High accuracy of classification result is expected for this classification technique as the number of bands increase. This technique is compared with Maximum Likelihood Classification(MLC). The hyperspectral image is the EO1-hyperion image acquired on September 2, 2001, and the number of bands for the experiment were chosen at 30, considering the band scope except the thermal band of Landsat TM. We chose the comparing base map as Ground Truth Data. We evaluate the accuracy by comparing this base map with the classification result image and performing overlay analysis visually. The result showed us that in MLC's case, it can't classify except water, and in case of water, it only classifies big lakes. But Canonical Correlation Classification (CCC) classifies the golf lawn exactly, and it classifies the highway line in the urban area well. In case of water, the ponds that are in golf ground area, the ponds in university, and pools are also classified well. As a result, although the training areas are selected without any trial and error, it was possible to get the exact classification result. Also, the ability to distinguish golf lawn from other vegetations in classification classes, and the ability to classify water was better than MLC technique. Conclusively, this CCC technique for hyperspectral image will be very useful for estimating harvest and detecting surface water. In advance, it will do an important role in the construction of GIS database using the spectral high resolution image, hyperspectral data.
