Suspension polymerization with hydrophobic silica as a stabilizer and AIBN as an initiator was conducted to synthesize PBMA particles and PBMA composite particles containing carbon black. Surface modification of silica particles by controlling pH revealed that 90% of them functioned as stabilizer and 10% were incorporated into PBMA particles. While stabilizer concentration had no impact on reaction kinetics and particle diameter, an increase in stabilizer concentration displayed an increase in molecular weights when it exceeded 1.67 wt%. An increase in initiator concentration and reaction temperature decreased molecular weights in close agreement with the theoretical equation. An increase in carbon black concentration from 1 to 7 wt%, relative to the monomer, showed a progressive decrease in reaction conversion. As carbon black was increased from 3 to 5 wt%, glass transition showed a $4^{\circ}C$ increase. The presence of carbon black was confirmed by TEM while its concentration was measured by TGA.
Spherical silica aerogel powders were fabricated via an emulsion polymerization method from a water glass. A water-in-oil emulsion, in which droplets of a silicic acid solution are emulsified with span 80 (surfactant) in n-hexane, was produced by a high power homogenizer. After gelation, the surface of the spherical silica hydrogels was modified using a TMCS (trimethylchlorosilane)/n-hexane solution followed by solvent exchange from water to n-hexane. Hydrophobic silica wet gel droplets were dried at 80 ℃ under ambient pressure. A perfect spherical silica aerogel powder between1 to 12 ㎛ in diameter was obtained and its size can be controlled by mixing speed. The tapping density, pore volume, and BET surface area of the silica aerogel powder were approximately 0.08 g·cm-3, 3.5 ㎤·g-1 and 742 ㎡·g-1, respectively.
A new enzyme immobilization method based on hydrophobic interaction between supporting material and enzyme has been successfully developed. The efficacy of the new technique has been investigated by loading a horse radish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme on the surface of conducting polymer-silica composites and by measuring the enzyme activity and leaching property of HRP loaded within polymer-silica composites. The immobilized HRP enzyme showed activity profiles similar to that of free HRP in phosphate buffer (pH 6). Above all, HRP adsorbed on the polymer-silica composites has showed excellent stability over 10 days, compared to HRP adsorbed on the pristine silica. It is thought that with appropriate optimization works, the present method would be used as a cost-effective and facile route for the immobilization of biomolecules.
Any place where exercise is common, such as a club, sports hall, or school, is considered a place for teaching sports. When doing sports, a very safe environment for sports should be chosen. The athlete should consider the safety of sports facilities and equipment, and if there is a defect, he should refrain from exercising in these places. The safety of sports facilities is very effective in creating people's sports activities, with the benefits of staying away from physical harm, enjoying sports, and having mental peace. Everyone has the right to participate in sports and recreation and to ensure that they enjoy a safe environment. The ability to manage and solve issues that may arise plays the most critical role in creating a safe environment. The quality of construction materials used for the construction of sports facilities is of great importance. In this work, the resistance and water repellency of concrete constituents for the construction of sports buildings have been investigated by nanoscience. Nano-concrete material solves the main problem of concrete surfaces, i.e., the entry of water and humidity into the structure. It also gives it a self-cleaning ability with its water repellency. Nanoparticles are placed between pores and cover the cracks, which causes roughness in the surface structure of concrete. The high roughness of the surface of the coated concrete caused its super-hydrophobicity. In hydrophobic surfaces, the higher the contact angle, the more hydrophobic the surface will be. In order to investigate the hydrophobic properties, silica nanoparticles, silica nanoparticles, and fly ash were prepared on concrete, and their properties were analyzed.

As nanoscience and nanotechnology advance, techniques for selective pattern growth have attracted significant attention. Silica nanoparticles (NPs) are used as a promising nanomaterials for bio-labeling, bio-imaging, and bio-sensing. In this study, silica NPs were synthesized by a sol-gel process using a modified Stöber method. In addition, the selective pattern growth of silica NPs was achieved by the surface functionalization of the substrate using a micro-contact printing technique of a hydrophobic treatment. The particle size of the as-synthesized silica NPs and morphology of selective pattern growth of silica NPs were characterized by FE-SEM. The contact angle by surface functionalization of the substrate was investigated using a contact angle analyzer. As a result, silica NPs were not observed on the hydrophobic surface of the OTS solution treatment, which was coated by spin coating. In contrast, the silica NPs were well coated on the hydrophilic surface after the KOH solution treatment. FE-SEM confirmed the selective pattern growth of silica NPs on a hydrophilic surface, which was functionalized using the micro-contact printing technique. If the characteristics of the selective pattern growth of silica NPs can be applied to dye-doped silica NPs, they will find applications in the bio imaging, and bio sensing fields.
Effects of the existence of $CO_2$ gas and pH on the silica surface characteristics at silica/Pb(II) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS, $C_{12}H_{25}SO_3Na$) solution interface were studied. The hydrophobic characteristics of silica surface was delineated by contact angle measurement and surface force measurement using atomic force microscopy (AFM). In $CO_2$ free condition provided by purging $N_2$ gas, the contact angle of fused silica surface in $10^{-4}M$ Pb(II) and SDS solution increased greatly up to $90^{\circ}$ compared with $40^{\circ}$ in atmospheric condition. It was due to the precipitation of $PbCO_3$ in atmospheric condition. In $CO_2$ free condition the change of contact angle and adhesion force ($F_{ad}$) in AFM, affected by pH change, was similar to the distribution of $PbOH^+$ ion in speciation diagram corresponding to $10^{-4}M$ total Pb(II). Therefore, it was convinced that the $PbOH^+$ ion among Pb(II) species would be the main adsorbing type on silica surface. Both of contact angle measurement and surface force measurement using AFM showed that the Pb only treatment made the silica surface hydrophobic. However, it could not be explained theoretically by current knowledge, and required further study in atomic level to solve the problem.
The properties of microstructure, hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, mechanical strength, and thermal conduction of pure/opacified silica aerogels synthesized by the sol-gel supercritical drying technique were investigated. The hydrophobic surface of opacified silica aerogels doped with carbon (0.13 g/cm3 density, 94% porosity, 580 m2/g specific surface area) transformed to hydrophilic surface after heat-treated above 30$0^{\circ}C$. The values of compressive modulus (1.85 MPa) and strength (0.5 MPa) of opacfied silica aerogels were about 20 times higher than those of pure silica aerogels. The mechanical properties of pure silica aerogels heat-treated at $700^{\circ}C$ were also considerably improved without changing their porosity and density. Particularly, compressive modulus and compressive strength of pure silica aerogels GPSed under 100$0^{\circ}C$ and 80 bar were improved 140 and 37 times, respectively. Thermal conductivities of pure/opacified silica aerogels measured at room temperature and 227$^{\circ}C$ were about 0.013 and 0.019 W/m.K, respectively, and were to be found very low value of 0.004 W/m.K below 10 torr pressure at room temperature.

The effect of the surface area of silicas on their reinforcing performance to styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds was systematically investigated. The feasibility of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area ($S_{BET}$) as a parameter representing the characteristics of the silicas was discussed compared to the mesopore volume, c value, oil absorption, and uptake of silane. The increase in $S_{BET}$ of silicas caused a considerable increase in Mooney viscosity, minimum torque, and hysteresis loss of the silica-filled SBR compounds, while significantly enhancing their abrasion property. These changes were explained by the attrition between the hydrophilic silica surface and the hydrophobic rubber chains. As expected, the change in $S_{BET}$ did not induce any remarkable changes in the cure, processing, tensile, and dynamic properties of the silica-filled SBR compounds because the crosslinking density of the rubber chains mainly determined these properties.
The objective of this investigation was to separate silicon and silica for recycling by the liquid-liquid separation technique. In the preparation of silicon (Si) single crystal, a small amount of silicon is fixed on the surface of silica (quartz, $SiO_2$) crucible. The used crucible is crushed for recycling both silicon and silica in a high purity from the mixed powder. Zeta-potential of silicon and silica are almost the same at pH higher than 3. Their separation by simple flotation is ruled out. However, their hydrophobic characteristics are different in several different organic solvent from the measurement of contact angle. Therefore, the liquid-liquid extraction is employed to separate silicon and silica. The result indicates that the organic solvent mixed with dodecyl ammonium acetate could extracted the silicon powder at high purity (97-100%) with high recovery from the silica powder in the water phase.
