Adsorption experiments of N-methylcarbamate insecticides on soils were carried out as a function of soil pH ana soil organic matter content with wet-and dry-land soils that were either oxidized or non-oxidized. The results obtained may be summarized as follows: The adsorption of N-methylcarbamate insecticides on soils was nearly leached to equilibrium after shaking for 12 hours. The adsorption of N-methylcarbamate insecticides was higher on sandy clay than sandy loam. The presence of organic matter in soil increased the adsorption of N-methrlcarbamate insecticides on soils. The mode of isothermal adsorption of N-methylcarbamate insecticides on soils was coincident with the Freundlich equation. Little effect of soil pH on the adsorption might be interpreted as that the adsorption was due to physical adsorption between N-methylcarbamate molecules and soil surface.
The amount, chemical composition and optical property of extracellular dissolved organic carbon (EOC) by phytoplankton were examined using axenic cultures of Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena flos-aquae, and Oscillatoria agardhii. The extracellular organic matter was categorized into five fractions (hydrophobic acids; AHSs, hydrophobic neutrals; HoNs, hydrophilic acids; HiAs, hydrophilic bases; HiBs, and hydrophilic neutrals; HiNs) using three adsorbent resins(XAD-8, cation, and anion). The release pattern and chemical composition of EOC varied with algal species and their growth phases. Percentage of extracellular release increased with age in all cultures. HiAs were the dominant component of EOC in all cultures, whereas the proportion of HiAs decreased with age in all cultures. In contrast, the proportions of HiBs and HiNs increased as cultures aged. In particular, the HiN fraction increased from 0% to 44% of EOC in M. aeruginosa and from 3.0% to 28% in A. flos-aquae, respectively. The proportion of AHSs was higher in the cultures of A. flos-aquae(7.5${\sim}$16%) and O. agardhii (8.7${\sim}$16%) than M. aeruginosa(0.2${\sim}$2.5%). The proportions of AHSs increased with culture age in M. aeruginosa and O. agardhii, but decreased in A. flos-aquae. The specific UV absorbance also varied among species; 1.9 Abs${\cdot}$cm$^{-1}$/mgC${\cdot}$L$^{-1}$ for M. aeruginosa, 3.7 Abs${\cdot}$cm$^{-1}$/mgC${\cdot}$L$^{-1}$ for A. flos-aquae, and 13.0 Abs${\cdot}$cm$^{-1}$/mgC${\cdot}$L^{-1}$ for O. agardhii. The results of this study indicates that DOC excreted by three blue-green algae differed with species and the growth phase.
The aim of this study is to quantify and characterize the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from paddy fields and crop fields in Tottori, Japan. DOC and ultraviolet (UV) absorption were measured in the filtrated water of each sample. The DOC concentration and the SUVA (specific UV absorption) of biodegradation analysis samples were determined around 50 days after their incubation. In the Fukui paddy fields, DOC concentration varied seasonally from 1.1 to $10.1mg\;Cl^{-1}$, becoming higher during heavy runoffs in April, a non-agriculture period. Variations in DOC concentration did not always correspond to rainfall, though. The Obadake paddy fields showed a DOC concentration pattern similar to that of the Fukui paddy fields. The daily DOC discharge per area in the Fukui (up), Fukui (down), Obadake (south) and Obadake (north) paddy fields influent from paddy fields were 0.02, 0.0161, 0.0135 and $0.0027kg\;a^{-1}day^{-1}$, respectively. These differences resulted from differences in agricultural types and customs of farmers according to paddy fields and other kinds of fields. Also, the SUVAs [which are indirect means to evaluate humic substances (hydrophobic fractions)] of the studied influent waters from paddy fields were generally lower than those of the influent waters from crop fields. Nonbiodegradable DOC accounted for 50.2 - 98% and 46.8 - 85.5% of the total DOC in the paddy fields and in the crop fields, respectively.

We have studied NOM(natural organic matters) adsorption and biodegradation on 3 kinds of activated carbon and a anthracite. Coal based activated carbon showed the highest DOC(dissolved organic carbon) adsorption capability and roconut(samchully), wood (pica) in the order among the 3 kinds of activated carbon(F400). The biomass amount and activity also showed on coal, wood and coconut based activated carbon in the order. Over 15 minutes EBCT(empty bed contact time) needed to achieve 10 to 17% average removal efficiency and $18\sim24%$ maximum removal efficiency of NOM biodegradation in biofilter using anthracite. Hydrophobic and below 10,000 dalton NOM was much easier to adsorb into the activated carbon than hydrophilic NOM, THMFP(trihalomethane formation potential) and BDOC (biodegradable dissolved organic carbon)$_{slow}$ were much easier than HAA5FP(haloacetic acid 5 formation potential) and $BDOC_{rapid}$ to adsorb into the activated carbon. Hydrophilic and below 1,000 dalton NOM was much easily biodegraded and HAA5FP and $BDOC_{rapid}$ was easier than THMFT and $BDOC_{slow}$ to biodegrade in the biofilter.

Changes in spectroscopic characteristics and pyrene binding coefficients of terrestrial dissolved organic matters(DOM) were investigated during microbial incubation. The incubation studies were conducted for 21 days using a leaf litter DOM and a soilderived DOM with an inoculum from a river. The dissolved organic carbon(DOC), the specific UV absorbance(SUVA), the synchronous fluorescence spectra, and the pyrene organic carbon-normalized binding coefficient(K$_{oc}$) of the DOM were measured at the incubation days of 0, 3, 7, 14 and 21. After the 21-day incubation, DOC were reduced to 61% and 51% of the original concentrations of the litter DOM and the soil-derived DOM, respectively. Comparison of the spectroscopic characteristics before and after the incubation revealed that the SUVA, the fulvic-like fluorescence(FLF), the humic-like fluorescence(HLF) of the different DOM were enhanced by the incubation whereas the protein-like fluorescence(PLF) was reduced. This indicates that more aromatic and humic-like compounds were enriched during the biodegradation process while biodegradable and weak carbon structures were depleted. Irrespective of the DOM sources, SUVA values showed a positive relationship with pyrene K$_{oc}$ with a correlation coefficient of 0.97. The FLF and HLF also exhibited good correlations with K$_{oc}$ values although different regression equations were obtained from the different DOM. Our results suggest that the selected spectroscopic characteristics could be good estimation indices for the changes of the binding reactivity of DOM for hydrophobic organic contaminants during biodegradation process.

The raw water DOC contained 39.3% of hydrophilics, 42.9% of hydriophobic, and 17.8% of transphilic. The hydrophobic fraction in this raw water was mostly fulvic acid. Fulvic acid comprised of 62% and the rest was humic acid(38%). There was more carboxylic acid functional group(64%) than phenolic group(36%). HPI-N and HPI-C comprised of 17% and 22% in the hydrophilic portion, respectively. The fouling mechanisms on the membrane surface and into its porous structure were analyzed in terms of several kinetic models. In order to analyze the fouling kinetics, the various kinetic models described in this paper were used to fit the experimental results. The kinetic models and kinetic constants obtained for each operation condition. The permeate flux was rapidly declined by simultaneous pore blocking and cake formation. Also, the permeate flux declined with decreasing internal pore size resulted from organic deposition into the membrane pore. The results of the membrane fouling test using UF membrane according to NOM fractions. HPI-N caused more fouling than HPI-C. Humic acid caused more fouling than fulvic acid probably due to higher adsorption capacity. Since humic acid has higher adsorption capacity than fulvic acid, it would be more adsorbed onto the membrane pores.
Perfluorinated compounds(PFCs), an emerging environmental pollutant, are environmentally persistent and bioaccumulative organic compounds that possess a toxic impact on human health and ecosystems. PFCs are distributed widely in environment media including groundwater, surface water, soil and sediment. PFCs in contaminated solid can potentially leach into groundwater. Therefore, understanding PFCs partitioning between the aqueous phase and solid phase is important for the determination of their fate and transport in the environment. In this study, the sorption equilibrium batch and kinetic experiment of PFCs were carried out to estimated the sorption coefficient(Kd) and the fraction between aqueous-solid phase partition, respectively. Sorption branches of the PFDA(Perfluoro-n-decanoic acid), PFNA(Perfluoro-n-nonanoic acid), PFOA(Perfluoro-n-octanoic acid), PFOS(Perfluoro-1-octane sulfonic acid) and PFHxS(Perfluoro-1-hexane sulfonic acid) isotherms were nearly linear, and the estimated Kd was as follow: PFDA(1.50) > PFOS(1.49) > PFNA(0.81) > PFHxS(0.45) > PFOA(0.39). The sorption kinetics of PFDA, PFNA, PFOA, PFOS and PFHxS onto soil were described by a biexponential adsorption model, suggesting that a fast transport into the surface layer of soil, followed by two-step diffusion transport into the internal water and/or organic matter of soil. Shorter times(<20hr) were required to achieve equilibrium and fraction for adsorption on solid(F1, F2) increased with perfluorinated carbon chain length and sulfonate compounds in this study. Overall, our results suggested that not only the perfluorocarbon chain length, but also the terminal functional groups are important contributors to electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between PFCs and soils, and organic matter in soils significantly affects adsorption maximum capacity than kinetic rate.

Two of the Hard White Winter (HWW) wheats had higher farina yield than mixed Hard Red Winter (HRW) wheat. Optimum steaming time for HRW farina spaghetti was 3min under 86-98$^{\circ}C$. Optimum cooking time decreased after steam treatment. Steam treated spaghetti showed much higher strength of dried spaghetti, lower cooking loss, and cooked weight, less stickiness, and total organic matters (TOM) value than in treated spaghetti after cooking. The rooking qualities except stickiness were significantly different between treated and untreated steam. The quality of hard wheat farina spaghetti was more affected than that of durum spaghetti after steam treatment. HWW farina spaghetti im-roved all the qualities of steam treated and untreated spaghetti than those of HRW farina spaghetti except stickiness. From the observations of scanning electron microscope (SEM), maybe two general principles of steaming can be explained by : i) forming hydrophobic protein film on surface of pasta, ii) higher retrogradation of starch, which cause less swelling of starch.

Hybrid ceramic membrane (HCM) processes that combined ozonation with a ceramic membrane (CM) or a reactive ceramic membrane (RM), an iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) incorporated-CM were investigated for membrane fouling control. Alumina disc type microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes doped with IONs by sintering method were tested under varying mass fraction of IONs. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that IONs were well-doped on the CM surface and doped IONs were approximately 50 nm in size. Change in the pure water permeability of RM was negligible compared to that of CM. These results indicate that IONs incorporation onto CM had little effect on CM performance in terms of the flux. Natural organic matter (NOM) fouling and fouling recovery patterns during HCM processes confirmed that the RM-ozonation process enhanced the destruction of NOM and reduced the extent of fouling more than the CM-ozonation process by hydroxyl radical formation in the presence of IONs on RM. In addition, analyses of NOM in the feed water and the permeate showed that the efficiency of membrane fouling control results from the NOM degradation during HCM processes; leading to removal and transformation of relatively high contents of aromatic, high molecular weight and hydrophobic NOM fractions.
