Global Climate Model (GCM) is too coarse to apply at a basin scale. The spatial downcsaling is needed to used to permit the assessment of the hydrological changes of a basin. Furthermore, temporal downscaling is required to obtain hourly precipitation to analyze a small or medium basin because only few or several hours are used to determine the peak flows after it rains. In the current study, the spariotemporal distribution of downscaled hourly precipitation for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios over South Korea is presented as well as its implications over hydrologica responses. Mean hourly precipitation significantly increases over the southern part of South Korea, especially during the morning time, and its increase becomes lower at later times of day in the RCP8.5 scenario. However, this increase cannot be propagated to the mainland due to the mountainous areas in the southern part of the country. Furthermore, the hydrological responses employing a distributed rainfall-runoff model show that there is a significant increase in the peak flow for the RCP8.5 scenario with a slight decrease for the RCP4.5 scenario. The current study concludes that the employed temporal downscaling method is suitable for obtaining the hourly precipitation data from daily GCM scenarios. In addition, the rainfall runoff simulation through the downscaled hourly precipitation is useful for investigating variations in the hydrological responses as related to future scenarios.

A simulation model for reservoir sizing was developed to be applied in a region with insufficient hydrological data. Reservoir storage balance equation was formulated on a monthly basis. Gajiyama equation was generalized to estimate monthly reservoir inflow more accurately. Monthly evaporation equation on a reservoir water surface was introduced , which was functioned with monthly mean temperature. Generalized Gajiyama equation was applied to estmate reservoir inflow of the Sayeon dam. Nash-Sutcliffe's model efficiency was 0.793. Using developed model for reservoir sizing, water supply capacity was analyzed with 118.000㎥/day on the Sayeon dam. This showed a reasonable result as compared with 110000㎥/day in other technical report. For general application of developed model, a virtual reservoir was considered and its dta of surface area and volume by elevation was prepared using DEM. Using the model, size of reservoir was determined and water supply capacity was anlayzed on a virtual reservoir.

The thermal-hydrological-mechanical (T-H-M) behavior of rock mass surrounding a large-scale high-temperature cavern thermal energy storage (CTES) at a shallow depth has been investigated, and the effects of hydrological conditions such as water table and rock permeability on the behavior have been examined. The liquid saturation of ground water around a storage cavern may have a small impact on the overall heat transfer and mechanical behavior of surrounding rock mass for a relatively low rock permeability of $10^{-17}m^2$. In terms of the distributions of temperature, stress and displacement of the surrounding rock mass, the results expected from the simulation with the cavern below the water table were almost identical to that obtained from the simulation with the cavern in the unsaturated zone. The heat transfer in the rock mass with reasonable permeability ${\leq}10^{-15}m^2$ was dominated by the conduction. In the simulation with rock permeability of $10^{-12}m^2$, however, the convective heat transfer by ground-water was dominant, accompanying the upward heat flow to near-ground surface. The temperature and pressure around a storage cavern showed different distributions according to the rock permeability, as a result of the complex coupled processes such as the heat transfer by multi-phase flow and the evaporation of ground-water.
Active stormwater management is essential to minimize the impact of urban development and improve the hydrological cycle system. In recent years, the Low Impact Development (LID) technique for urban stormwater management is attracting attention as a reasonable alternative. The Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is actively used in urban hydrological cycle improvement projects as it provides simulation functions for various GI (Green Infra) facilities through its LID module. However, in order to simulate GI facilities using SWMM, there are many difficulties in setting up complex watersheds and deploying GI facilities. In this study, a model that can evaluate the performance of GI facilities is proposed while implementing the core hydrological process of GI facilities. Since the proposed model operates based on hydrological routing, it can not only reflect the infiltration, storage, and evapotranspiration of GI facilities, but also quantitatively evaluate the effect of improving urban hydrological cycle by GI facilities. The applicability of the proposed model was verified by comparing the results of the proposed model with the results of SWMM. In addition, a discussion of errors occurring in the SWMM's permeable pavement system simulation is included.

Multivariate statistical analysis and an environmental hydrological model were applied for investigating the causes of water pollution and providing best management practices for water quality improvement in urban and agricultural watersheds. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) for water quality time series data show that chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), suspended solids (SS) and total phosphorus (T-P) are classified as non-point source pollutants that are highly correlated with river discharge. Total nitrogen (T-N), which has no correlation with river discharge and inverse relationship with water temperature, behaves like a point source with slow and consistent release. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) shows intermediate characteristics between point and non-point source pollutants. The results of the PCA and CA for the spatial water quality data indicate that the cluster 1 of the watersheds was characterized as upstream watersheds with good water quality and high proportion of forest. The cluster 3 shows however indicates the most polluted watersheds with substantial discharge of BOD and nutrients from urban sewage, agricultural and industrial activities. The cluster 2 shows intermediate characteristics between the clusters 1 and 3. The results of hydrological simulation program-Fortran (HSPF) model simulation indicated that the seasonal patterns of BOD, T-N and T-P are affected substantially by agricultural and livestock farming activities, untreated wastewater, and environmental flow. The spatial analysis on the model results indicates that the highly-populated watersheds are the prior contributors to the water quality degradation of the river.
Saemangeum lake is an artificial lake created by reclamation works and an estuary embankment since 2006. The sea water flows into the lake by the operation of two sluice gates, and the freshwater enters into the lake by the upper streams. For the reflection of hydrology and hydrodynamics effects in Saemangeum area, a hydrodynamics model was developed by connecting Hydrological Simulation Program with Fortran (HSPF) and Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code (EFDC). The HSPF was applied to simulate the freshwater discharge from the upper steam watershed, and the EFDC was performed to compute water flow, water temperature, and salinity based on time series from 2008 to 2009. The calibration and validation are performed to analyze horizontal and vertical gradients. The horizontal trend of model simulation results is reflected in the trend of observed data tolerably. The vertical trend is conducted an analysis of seasonal comparisons because of the limitation of vertically observed data. Water temperature reflects on the seasonal changes. Salinity has an effect on the near river input spots. The impact area of salinity is depending on the sea water distribution by gate operation, mainly.
Hydrological models are based on a combination of parameters that describe the hydrological characteristics and processes within a watershed. For this reason, the model performance and accuracy are highly dependent on the parameters. However, model uncertainties caused by parameters with stochastic characteristics need to be considered. As a follow-up to the study conducted by Choi et al (2020), who developed a relatively simple semi-distributed hydrological model, we propose a tool to estimate the posterior distribution of model parameters using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, a type of Markov-Chain Monte Carlo technique, and analyze the uncertainty of model parameters and simulated stream flow. In addition, the uncertainty caused by the parameters of each version is investigated using the lumped and semi-distributed versions of the applied model to the Hapcheon Dam watershed. The results suggest that the uncertainty of the semi-distributed model parameters was relatively higher than that of the lumped model parameters because the spatial variability of input data such as geomorphological and hydrometeorological parameters was inherent to the posterior distribution of the semi-distributed model parameters. Meanwhile, no significant difference existed between the two models in terms of uncertainty of the simulation outputs. The statistical goodness of fit of the simulated stream flows against the observed stream flows showed satisfactory reliability in both the semi-distributed and the lumped models, but the seasonality of the stream flow was reproduced relatively better by the distributed model.

In this study we evaluated the hydrological applicability of multi-satellite precipitation estimates. Three high-resolution global multi-satellite precipitation products, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA), the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP), and the Climate Precipitation Center (CPC) Morphing technique (CMORPH), were applied to the Coupled Routing and Excess Storage (CREST) model for the evaluation of their hydrological utility. The CREST model was calibrated from 2002 to 2005 and validated from 2006 to 2009 in the Chungju Dam watershed, including two years of warm-up periods (2002-2003 and 2006-2007). Areal-averaged precipitation time series of the multi-satellite data were compared with those of the ground records. The results indicate that the multi-satellite precipitation can reflect the seasonal variation of precipitation in the Chungju Dam watershed. However, TMPA overestimates the amount of annual and monthly precipitation while GSMaP and CMORPH underestimate the precipitation during the period from 2002 to 2009. These biases of multi-satellite precipitation products induce poor performances in hydrological simulation, although TMPA is better than both of GSMaP and CMORPH. Our results indicate that advanced rainfall algorithms may be required to improve its hydrological applicability in South Korea.
It is known that large-scale deforestation has occurred in North Korea due to economic failures since the 1990s, and this is expected to greatly change the characteristics of the hydrological cycle. In this study, hydrological cycle simulation was carried out for the period of about 30 years from 1981 to 2013 for the entire Korean peninsula using the VIC model, a land surface hydrology model. The simulation results are summarized as follow. First, the runoff ratio is 55%~70% in South Korea and 38~56% in North Korea. In particular, it is worth noting that despite the small runoff ratio, the variation is about 28% larger than the South Korea's 15%. The rate of evapotranspiration was larger than that of South Korea. That is, the rate of evapotranspiration in South Korea is 20~35% and in North Korea it is 25~46%. However, the rate of change was 21% in the case of North Korea and slightly larger than 15% in South Korea. Third, South Korea has an average of 34% in soil moisture and 27% in North Korea. However, unlike the simulated results of the runoff ratio and the evapotranspiration rate, the difference in the variation of soil moisture in South Korea and North Korea over the entire period was similar with 8%. As a result, we can confirm that the difference of hydrological cycle characteristics between South Korea and North Korea has been increased since the 1990s, when the forest destruction of North Korea became serious. In the case of South Korea, there is little difference in the hydrological cycle characteristics. In North Korea, however, there is a distinct difference, which is also a result reflecting the difference in the effects of forest destruction.
The interest in hydrological modeling has increased significantly recently due to the necessity of watershed management, specifically in regards to lumped models, which are being prosperously utilized because of their relatively uncomplicated algorithms which require less simulation time. However, lumped models require empirical coefficients for hydrological analyses, which do not take into consideration the heterogeneity of site-specific characteristics. To overcome such obstacles, a distributed model was offered as an alternative and the number of researches related to watershed management and distributed models has been steadily increasing in the recent years. Thus, in this study, the feasibility of a grid-based rainfall-runoff model was reviewed using the flood runoff process in the Han River basin, including the ChungjuDam, HoengseongDam and SoyangDam watersheds. Hydrological parameters based on GIS/RS were extracted from basic GIS data such as DEM, land cover, soil map and rainfall depth. The accuracy of the runoff analysis for the model application was evaluated using EFF, NRMSE and QER. The calculation results showed that there was a good agreement with the observed data. Besides the ungauged spatial characteristics in the SoyangDam watershed, EFF showed a good result of 0.859.
