In this study, the multi-objective optimization method is attemped to optimize the hydrological model to estimate the runoff through two hydrological processes. HL-RDHM, a distributed hydrological model that can simultaneously estimate the amount of snowfall and runoff, was used as the distributed hydrological model. The Durango River basin in Colorado, USA, was selected as the watershed. MOSCEM was used as a multi-objective optimization method and parameter calibration and hydrologic model optimization were tried by selecting 5 parameters related to snow melting and 13 parameters related to runoff. Data from 2004 to 2005 were used to optimize the model and verified using data from 2001 to 2004. By optimizing both the amount of snow and the amount of runoff, the RMSE error can be reduced from 7% to 40% of the simulation value based on the initial solution at three SNOTEL points based on the RMSE. The USGS observation point of the outflow is improved about 40%.
The present study developed a sequential approach-based numerical simulator for modeling coupled thermal-hydrological-mechanical (THM) processes in the ground and investigated the computational performance of the coupling analysis algorithm. The present sequential approach linked the two different solvers: an open-source numerical code, OpenGeoSys for solving the thermal and hydrological processes in porous media and a commercial code, FLAC3D for solving the geomechanical response of the ground. A benchmark test of the developed simulator was carried out using a THM problem where an analytical solution is given. The benchmark problem involves the coupled behavior (variations in temperature, pore pressure, stress, and deformation with time) of a fully saturated porous medium which is subject to a point heat source. The results of the analytical solution and numerical simulation were compared and the validity of the numerical simulator was investigated.

This paper introduces the new generic dynamic neuro-fuzzy local modeling system (DNFLMS) that is based on a dynamic Takagi-Sugeno (TS) type fuzzy inference system for complex dynamic hydrological modeling tasks. The proposed DNFLMS applies a local generalization principle and an one-pass training procedure by using the evolving clustering method to create and update fuzzy local models dynamically and the extended Kalman filtering learning algorithm to optimize the parameters of the consequence part of fuzzy local models. The proposed DNFLMS is applied to develop the inference model to forecast the flow of Waikoropupu Springs, located in the Takaka Valley, South Island, New Zealand, and the influence of the operation of the 32 Megawatts Cobb hydropower station on springs flow. It is demonstrated that the proposed DNFLMS is superior in terms of model accuracy, model complexity, and computational efficiency when compared with a multi-layer perceptron trained with the back propagation learning algorithm and well-known adaptive neural-fuzzy inference system, both of which adopt global generalization.

Aim of this research was to investigate the effects of Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for sensitivity analysis with two types of DEMs: 1 to 24,000 and 1 to 250,000 DEM. Another emphasis was given to the development of methodology for processing DEMs to create ArcGIS Pro and GRASS layers. This was done while developing water quality system modeling using DEMs which were used to model hydrological processes and SWAT model. Sensitivity analysis with DEMs resulted in different runoff volumes in the model simulation. Runoff volume was higher for the 1:24,000 DEM than 1:250,000 DEM, probably due to the finer resolution and slope which increased the estimated runoff from the watershed. Certainly the DEMs were factors in precision of the simulations and it was obvious during sensitivity analysis that DEMs had significant effect on runoff volumes. We suggest, however, that additional comparative research could be conducted involving more parameters such as soil and hydrologic parameters to provide insight into the overall physical system which the SWAT model represents.

In the processes of hydrological cycle, when precipitation reaches the ground surface, water may become surface runoff or infiltrate into soil and then possibly further percolate into groundwater aquifer. A part of the water is returned to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. Soil moisture dynamics driven climate fluctuations plays a key role in the simulation of water transfer among ground surface, unsaturated zone and aquifer. In this study, a one-layer canopy and a four-layer soil representation is used for a coupled soil-vegetation modeling scheme. A non-zero hydraulic diffusivity between the deepest soil layer modeled and groundwater table is used to couple the numerical equations of soil moisture and groundwater dynamics. Simulation of runoff generation is based on the mechanism of both infiltration excess overland flow and saturation overland flow nested in a numerical model of soil moisture dynamics. Thus, a comprehensive hydrological model integrating canopy, soil zone and aquifer has been developed to evaluate water resources in the plain region of Huaihe River basin in East China and simulate water transfer among precipitation, surface water, soil moisture and groundwater. The newly developed model is capable of calculating hydrological components of surface runoff, evapotranpiration from soil and aquifer, and groundwater recharge from precipitation and discharge into rivers. Regional parameterization is made by using two approaches. One is to determine most parameters representing specific physical values on the basis of characterization of soil properties in unsaturated zone and aquifer, and vegetations. The other is to calibrate the remaining few parameters on the basis of comparison between measured and simulated streamflow and groundwater tables. The integrated modeling system was successfully used in the Linhuanji catchment of Huaihe plain region. Study results demonstrate that (1) on the average 14.2% of precipitation becomes surface runoff and baseflow during a ten-year period from 1986 to 1995 and this figure fluctuates between only 3.0% in drought years of 1986, 1988, 1993 and 1994 to 24.0% in wet year of 1991; (2) groundwater directly deriving from precipitation recharge is about 15.0% t of the precipitation amount, and (3) about half of the groundwater recharge flows into rivers and loses through evaporation.
This study presents a probabilistic distributed hydrological model for Ephemeral catchment, where zero flow often occurs due to the influence of distinct climate characteristics in South Korea. The gridded hydrological model is developed by combining the Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting Model (SAC-SMA) runoff model with a routing model. In addition, an error model is employed to represent a probabilistic hydrologic model. To be specific, the hydrologic model is coupled with a censoring error model to properly represent the features of ephemeral catchments. The performance of the censoring error model is evaluated by comparing it with the Gaussian error model, which has been utilized in a probabilistic model. We first address the necessity to consider ephemeral catchments through a review of the extensive research conducted over the recent decade. Then, the Yongdam Dam catchment is selected for our study area to confirm the usefulness of the hydrologic model developed in this study. Our results indicate that the use of the censored error model provides more reliable results, although the two models considered in this study perform reliable results. In addition, the Gaussian model delivers many negative flow values, suggesting that it occasionally offers unrealistic estimations in hydrologic modeling. In an in-depth analysis, we find that the efficiency of the censored error model may increase as the frequency of zero flow increases. Finally, we discuss the importance of utilizing the censored error model when the hydrologic model is applied for ephemeral catchments in South Korea.
This study aims to improve the runoff modeling accuracy of a basin using Hydrological Simulation Program-FORTRAN (HSPF) model by considering nonhomogeneous characteristics of a basin. By entering classified values according to the various types of land cover and soil to the parameters in HSPF-roughness coefficient (NSUR), infiltration (INFILT), and evapotranspiration (LZETP)- the heterogeneity of the Yongdam Dam basin was reflected in the model. The results were analyzed and compared with the one where the parameters were set as a single value throughout the basin. The flow rate and water quality simulation results showed improved results when classified parameters were used by land cover and soil type than when single values were used. The parameterization changed not only the flow rate, but also the composition ratio of each hydrologic components such as surface runoff, baseflow, and evapotranspiration, which shows the impact of the value set to a parameter on the entire hydrological process. This implies the importance of considering the heterogeneous characteristics of the land cover and soil of the basin when setting the parameters in a model.
It is uncertain how global climate change will influence future drought characteristics over the Korean peninsula. This study aims to project the future droughts using climate change and land use change scenarios over the Korean peninsula with the land surface modeling system, i.e., Weather Research and Forecasting Model Hydrological modeling system (WRF-Hydro). The Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 2.6 and 8.5 are used as future climate scenarios and the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs), specifically SSP2, is adopted for the land use scenario. The using Threshold Level Method (TLM), we identify future hydrological and ecological drought events with runoff and Net Primary Productivity (NPP), respectively, and assess drought characteristics of durations and intensities in different scenarios. Results show that the duration of drought is longer over RCP2.6-SSP2 for near future (2031-2050) and RCP8.5-SSP2 (2080-2099) for the far future for hydrological drought. On the other hand, RCP2.6-SSP2 for the far future and RCP8.5-SSP2 for the near future show longer duration for ecological drought. In addition, the drought intensities in both hydrological and ecological drought show different characteristics with the drought duration. The intensity of the hydrological droughts was greatly affected by threshold level methods and RCP2.6-SSP2 for far future shows the severest intensity. However, for ecological drought, the difference of the intensity among the threshold level is not significant and RCP2.6-SSP2 for near future and RCP2.6-SSP2 for near future show the severest intensity. This study suggests a possible future drought characteristics is in the Korea peninsula using combined climate and land use changes, which will help the community to understand and manage the future drought risks.
Gamma distributions are some of the most popular models for hydrological processes. In this paper, a very flexible family which contains the gamma distribution as a particular case is introduced. Evidence of flexibility is shown by examining the shape of its pdf and the associated hazard rate function. A comprehensive treatment of the mathematical properties is provided by deriving expressions for the nth moment, moment generating function, characteristic function, Renyi entropy and the asymptotic distribution of the extreme order statistics. Estimation and simulation issues are also considered. Finally, a detailed application to drought data from the State of Nebraska is illustrated.
