This study was performed to evaluate the effect of hydrogen peroxide-producing Lactobacillus acidophilus V-20onthe replication of periodontal pathogens, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. When A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis were incubated alone and in the combination with L. acidophilus V-20, the viable cell numbers of A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis were compared between those cultures. The effect of S. mutans, E. durans, and L. lactis on the replication of A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis was also evaluated. The change of periodontal indexes(probine depth, gingival index, GCF volume) and the viable cell numbers of A. actinomycetemcomitans and black pigmented bacteroides in subgingival plaque sample were evaluated following gargling of fermented milk made from L. acidophilus V-20 for 1 month on patients with periodontal disease in maintenance phase. In the mixed culture of L. acidophilus V-20 and A. actinomycetemcomitans or P. gingivalis, the replication of A. actinomycetemcomitans or P. gingivalis wascompletely inhibited. But in the mixed culture of P. gingivalis and hydrogen peroxide-nonproducing Lactobacillus casei, the viable ceil numbers of P. gingivaliswas not decreased when compared with the numbers in the mixed culture of P. gingivalis and L. acidophilus V-20. In the mixed culture of A. actinomycetemcomitans and S. mutans, E. durans, or L. lactis, the viable cell number of A. actinomycetemcomitans was not almost changed when compared with the numbers in the culture of A. actinomycetemcomitans alone. And in the mixed culture of P. gingivalis and E. durans or L. lactis, the viable cell numbers of P. gingivaliswas not almost changed compared with the counts in the culture of P. gingivalis alone. But the replication of P. gingivalis was completely inhibited in the mixed culture of P. gingivalis and S. mutans. When the change of periodontal indexes following gargling of fermented milk was compared with baseline, probing depth and gingival index were not changed, but GCF volume was significantly decreased(p<0.05). And when the viable ceil numbers of microorganisms in subgingival plaque sample were compared with baseline, total viable ceil number was almost unchanged and the viable cell numbers of A. actinomycetemcomitans and black pigmented bacteroides were significantly decreased(p<0.05). These results suggest that L. acidophilus V-20 inhibit the replication of A. actinomycetemcomitans and black pigmented bacteroides by the formation of hydrogen peroxide.
Co and Ni catalysts supported on $Al_2O_3$ for partial oxidation of methane producing hydrogen were synthesized using impregnation to incipient wetness. The activities of these catalysts for the partial oxidation of methane was investigated at 1 atm and $CH_4/O_2=2.0$ in the temperature range of $450{\sim}650^{\circ}C$. The reaction activity of $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalysts with different loading was investigated. And the beneficial effects of Ni addition to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and the promotional effects of Ce and La addition to $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ were investigated. These catalysts were characterized by XRD and SEM/EDX. Comparing catalyst loadings, 10 wt% Co and 10 wt% Ni were found to be optimal at the experimental conditions. The 10 wt% $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and 10 wt% $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalysts in partial oxidation of methane showed $CH_4$ conversions and CO selectivity close to the thermodynamic equilibrium levels, but showed lower $H_2$ selectivity than equilibrium level. The addition of Ni to $Co/Al_2O_3$ exhibited higher $H_2$ selectivity but beneficial effect was not observed in the $CH_4$ conversion. Addition of Ce to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and addition of La to $Ni/Al_2O_3$ a improved the $CH_4$ conversion level and $H_2$ selectivity.
In this paper, the commercial feasibility of trigeneration, producing heat, power, and hydrogen (CHHP) and using biogas derived from macroalgae (i.e., seaweed biomass feedstock), are investigated. For this purpose, a commercial scale trigeneration process, consisting of three MW solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), gas turbine, and organic Rankine cycle, is designed conceptually and simulated using Aspen plus, a commercial process simulator. To produce hydrogen, a solid oxide fuel cell system is re-designed by the removal of after-burner and the addition of a water-gas shift reactor. The cost of each unit operation equipment in the process is estimated through the calculated heat and mass balances from simulation, with the techno-economic analysis following through. The designed CHHP process produces 2.3 MW of net power and 50 kg hr-1 of hydrogen with an efficiency of 37% using 2 ton hr-1 of biogas from 3.47 ton hr-1 (dry basis) of brown algae as feedstock. Based on these results, a realistic scenario is evaluated economically and the breakeven electricity selling price (BESP) is calculated. The calculated BESP is ¢10.45 kWh-1, which is comparable to or better than the conventional power generation. This means that the CHHP process based on SOFC can be a viable alternative when the technical targets on SOFC are reached.
In this work we have investigated the production of catalase from Bacillus sp. strains, which were screened and identified from soil. These strains were cultivated in shaking flasks with tryptic soy broth (TSB) at $30^{\circ}C$ and 200 rpm. Effects of the temperature and pH on the stability of the native catalase and whole cell viability were studied in the temperature range of $25-60^{\circ}C$ and the pH range of 7-13. Korean natural zeolite was added to culture medium and mixed with microorganisms for 24 hours. The native catalase maintained its activity over $50^{\circ}C$. The enzyme acitiviy of the catalase from Bacillus flexus BKBChE-3 was highest among the Bacillus sp. strains studied. Bacillus flexus BKBChE-3 and immobilized Bacillus cells have survived under extreme conditions of over $50^{\circ}C$ and pH 12. 60 mL of 10.5 mM $H_2O_2$ solution were entirely removed within 1 hour with catalase produced from Bacillus sp. on the flask. When Bacillus cells were immobilized on Korean natural zeolite, colony forming unit of Bacillus flexus BKBChE-3 was increased and high efficiency of hydrogen peroxide removal was observed.

Recently, the operating conditions of the various mechanical structures have become more severe and the running time has become longer as the development of plant equipment increases with the introduction of high technology. Thus, the reliability of the system and its accessories is becoming a problem. Normally, synthetic natural gas (SNG) plants use 1.25Cr-0.5Mo or 2.25Cr-1Mo heat resistant steel according to the operating conditions. In this study, a lab-scale reactor was set up using 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel, in order to carry out corrosion tests for producing synthetic natural gas. The corrosive characteristics were investigated under 1st-methanator operating conditions and fundamental data about the durability and reliability were obtained by using the experimental test. The analysis of results obtained on the durability of the reactor under emission and injection compositions showed that the hydrogen embrittlement caused by hydrogen and the oxidation corrosion caused by H2O had the most effect on the durability of 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel in the SNG reactor. However, the hydrogen embrittlement and oxidation corrosion occurred simultaneously under emission conditions, so that the corrosion of the material increased suddenly after a long operating time. Besides, the corrosion of the 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel under the injection composition was faster than that under the emission composition.
In this study, we tried to obtain the optimal conditions to reduce odors generated from pig wastewater using magnesia (MgO) through in-situ test after producing a reactor for removing odors. For this purpose, the filling amount of magnesia, the injection amount of pig wastewater, the aeration method, the aeration amount and the aeration time were considered. The field experiment was conducted at Cheongwoon Livestock Farm, which has a pig wastewater reservoir. As the amount of magnesia added to the weight of wastewater (500 kg) increases, the amount of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) generated tended to gradually decrease. As a result of the test, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in the pig wastewater decreased up to 65% and 77%, respectively, for 2 days aeration after 0.8% of magnesia was added to the reaction tank. The initial pH of the pig wastewater in the reactor was 8.2, and the pH was found to be 9.2 when magnesia was added up to 0.8%. In the light of this trend, it can be known that magnesia gradually increases the pH in the pig wastewater and makes it weakly alkaline. As the pH increases, part of the ammonia gas present in the pig wastewater vaporizes into the air and the remaining part is removed by precipitation after chemical bonding with dissolved magnesium ions and phosphate ions. In order to remove the odor of pig wastewater and turn it into compost, most of the existing livestock farms go through a six-month aeration process using microorganisms. In contrast, the current study proved the effect of removing odors from pig wastewater within 2 days through chemical reactions that do not affect microbial activity.
A nucleoside diphosphate-linked moiety X (Nudix) hydrolase-like gene, YSA1, has been identified as one of the gromwell plant extract-responsive genes in Cryptococcus neoformans. Ysa1 is known to control intracellular concentrations of ADP-ribose or O-acetyl-ADP-ribose, and has diverse biological functions, including the response to oxidative stress in the ascomycete yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, we characterized the role of YSA1 in the stress response and adaptation of the basidiomycete yeast, C. neoformans. We constructed three independent deletion mutants for YSA1, and analyzed their mutant phenotypes. We found that ysa1 mutants did not show increased sensitivity to reactive oxygen species-producing oxidative damage agents, such as hydrogen peroxide and menadione, but exhibited increased sensitivity to diamide, which is a thiol-specific oxidant. Ysa1 was dispensable for the response to most environmental stresses, such as genotoxic, osmotic, and endoplasmic reticulum stress. In conclusion, modulation of YSA1 may regulate the cellular response and adaptation of C. neoformans to certain oxidative stresses and contribute to the evolution of antifungal drug resistance.

Flash reduction of graphene oxide is an efficient method for producing high quality reduced graphene oxide under room temperature ambient conditions without the use of hazardous reducing agents (such as hydrazine and hydrogen iodide). The entire process is fast, low-cost, and suitable for large-scale fabrication, which makes it an attractive process for industrial manufacturing. Herein, we present a simple fabrication method for a flexible in-plane graphene micro-supercapacitor using flash light irradiation. All carbon-based, monolithic supercapacitors with in-plane geometry can be fabricated with simple flash irradiation, which occurs in only a few milliseconds. The thinness of the fabricated device makes it highly flexible and thus useful for a variety of applications, including portable and wearable electronics. The rapid flash reduction process creates a porous graphene structure with high surface area and good electrical conductivity, which ultimately results in high specific capacitance ($36.90mF\;cm^{-2}$) and good cyclic stability up to 8,000 cycles.

Biomass gasification is a promising technology for producing a fuel gas which is useful for power generation systems. In biomass gasification processes, tar formation often causes some problems such as pipeline plugging. Thus, proper tar treatment is necessary. So far, nickel (Ni)-based catalysts have been intensively studied for the catalytic tar removal. However, the deactivation of Ni-based catalysts takes place because of coke deposition and sintering of Ni metal particles. To overcome these problems, we have been using ruthenium (Ru)-based catalyst for tar removal. It is reported by Okada et al., that a Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst is very effective for preventing the carbon deposition during the steam reforming of hydrocarbons. Also, this catalyst is more active than the Ni-based catalyst at a low steam to carbon ratio (S/C). Benzene was used for the tar model compound because it is the main constituent of biomass tar and also because it represents a stable aromatic structure apparent in tar formed in biomass gasification processes. The steam reforming process transforms hydrocarbons into gaseous mixtures constituted of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), carbon monoxide (CO), methane ($CH_4$) and hydrogen ($H_2$).
The acid gas removal (AGR) system was designed and installed to remove $H_2S$ in coal syngas in the pilot-scale coal gasification system for producing chemicals like Dimethyl Ether(DME). The syngas from the coal gasification at the rate of $100{\sim120$$Nm^3$/hr included pollutants such as fly ash. $H_2S$, COS, $NH_3$, etc. The designed temperature and pressure of the AGR system are below 50oC and 8 kg/$cm^2$. Fe-chelate was used as an absorbent. $H_2S$ was stably removed below 0.5 ppm in the AGR system when the concentration of $H_2S$ was $150{\sim}450$ ppm. The pH of Fe-chelate solution was also stably maintained between $8{\sim}9$. FeMgO absorbent was also tested to remove $H_2S$ in the lab-scale AGR system and $H_2S$ was also removed below 0.5 ppm in the initial operation.
