알카리 수전해에서 전극 형상의 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on Effect of the Shape of Electrodes in Alkaline Water Electrolysis)

  • For an investigation on the effect of the shape of electrodes in alkaline water electrolysis, two kinds of stack with circular and square electrode array are used to visualize both for behaviors of hydrogen bubble around the electrodes and for measurements of hydrogen production from these two stacks. The electrolytes for the hydrogen production experiment were applied for 20 wt%, 25 wt%, 30 wt% and 35 wt% of KOH alkaline aqueous solutions. As a result, the adhesion length of bubbles attached around the square electrode in the visualization experiment was found to be 1.7 times longer compared with the attached around the circular electrode. In the hydrogen production experiments, the volume of hydrogen production of the stack by using circular electrode array was approximately 3% more than that of the stack with square electrode array. These observations may be caused by the effect of the bubbles attached to the around the electrodes obstructing mass transfer such as hydrogen exhaust and electrolyte supply.

  • The aim of this paper is controlling ignition timing and load in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion with low cetane number fuel, hydrogen. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion is an advanced combustion technology that achieves higher thermal efficiency and lower $NO_x$ emissions than that of conventional combustion system. Dimethyl ether (DME), which has been researched widely as the most attractive alternative fuel of diesel, is attractive for HCCI combustion because of the easy evaporation. In this study, the single cylinder DME engine operated with a direct injection system has been used to investigate combustion processes and emissions of DME HCCI with a premixed hydrogen supply. The experiment was carried out under various engine speed and fraction rates of hydrogen. As a result, the increase of fraction rates of hydrogen retard the DME ignition timing and eliminated the knocking during high engine speed condition. IMEP was increased with increase of fraction rates of hydrogen by 30%. 40% of the fraction rates of hydrogen resulted in misfiring. The $NO_x$ emission was reduced by increasing the fraction rates of hydrogen, but HC emission was increased.

Effect of Nitrogen-Load Condition on Hydrogen Production and Bacterial Community in Continuous Anaerobic Hydrogen Fermentation Process

  • Effect of nitrogen-load condition on hydrogen ($H_2$) production and bacterial community in a continuous anaerobic hydrogen fermentation were investigated. The slight $H_2$ production on extremely low nitrogen-load condition (C/N ratio: 180) at the start-up period. The highest $H_2$ production was obtained when the C/N ratio was 36, the $H_2$ production yield ($mol-H_2/mol-glucose$) reached to 1.7, and it was indicated that Clostridium pasteurianum mainly contributed to the $H_2$ production. The $H_2$ production was decreased on both the lower (C/N: 72) and higher (C/N: 18) nitrogen-load conditions. The excess nitrogen-load was not always suitable for the hydrogen production. The fluctuation of $H_2$ production seemed to be caused by a change in the bacterial community according to the nitrogen-load condition, while a recovery of $H_2$ productivity was possible by a control of nitrogen-load condition through the bacterial community change. When the nitrogen-load condition was not suitable for hydrogen production, the lactic acid concentration was increased and also lactic acid bacteria were definitely detected, which suggested that the competition between hydrogen fermentator and lactic acid producer was occurred. These results demonstrated that the nitrogen-load condition affect on the $H_2$ productivity through the change of bacterial community in anaerobic hydrogen fermentation.

  • In the face of the world's growing energy storage needs, liquid hydrogen offers a high energy density solution for the storage and transport of energy throughout society. A 5 L liquid hydrogen storage tank has been designed, fabricated and tested to investigate boil-off rate of liquid hydrogen. As the insulation plays a key role on the cryogenic vessels, various insulation methods have been employed. To reduce heat conduction loss, the epoxy resin-based insulation supports G-10 were used. To minimize radiation heat loss, vapor cooled radiation shield, multi-layer insulation, and high vacuum were adopted. Mass flow meter was used to measure boil-off rate of the 5 L cryogenic vessel. A series of performance tests were done for liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen to compare with design parameters, resulting in the boil-off rate of 1.7%/day for liquid nitrogen and 16.8%/day for liquid hydrogen at maximum.

Metabolic Pathways of Hydrogen Production in Fermentative Acidogenic Microflora

  • Biohydrogen production from organic wastewater by anaerobically activated sludge fermentation has already been extensively investigated, and it is known that hydrogen can be produced by glucose fermentation through three metabolic pathways, including the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvic acid to acetyl-CoA, oxidation of NADH to $NAD^+$, and acetogenesis by hydrogen-producing acetogens. However, the exact or dominant pathways of hydrogen production in the anaerobically activated sludge fermentation process have not yet been identified. Thus, a continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) was introduced and a specifically acclimated acidogenic fermentative microflora obtained under certain operation conditions. The hydrogen production activity and potential hydrogen-producing pathways in the acidogenic fermentative microflora were then investigated using batch cultures in Erlenmeyer flasks with a working volume of 500 ml. Based on an initial glucose concentration of 10 g/l, pH 6.0, and a biomass of 1.01 g/l of a mixed liquid volatile suspended solid (MLVSS), 247.7 ml of hydrogen was obtained after a 68 h cultivation period at $35{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Further tests indicated that 69% of the hydrogen was produced from the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvic acid, whereas the remaining 31% was from the oxidation of NADH to $NAD^+$. There were no hydrogen-producing acetogens or they were unable to work effectively in the anaerobically activated sludge with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of less than 8 h.

  • The PSA cycle was performed for the separation of binary gas mixture $H_2/Ar$ (80%/20%) using the six-step two-bed process. Adsorption equilibrium contains a LRC model for equilibrium adsorption isotherms and a LDF model for mass transfer. Aspen ADSIM, simulator was applied to predict the separation performance. The effect of cycle parameters such as feed rate, adsorption pressure and P/F ratio on the separation of hydrogen has been studied in experiment and simulation. In the results, maximize the recovery of hydrogen as a high purity was 13LPM feed flowrate, 120sec adsorption time, 11atm adsorption pressure and 0.1 P/F ratio in a cyclic steady-state come out since 10th cycle.

  • High strength sheet steels for automobile are seriously compromised by hydrogen embrittlement. This issue has been continuously studied, but the field of interest, which lies between microstructural characteristics and hydrogen behavior with hydrogen charging, has not yet been thoroughly investigated. This study was done to investigate the behavior of hydrogen according to the hydrogen volume fraction on 590MPa grade DP steels, which are developed under hydrogen charging conditions as high strength sheet steels for automobiles. The penetration depths and the mechanical properties, according to charging conditions, were investigated through the distribution of micro-hardness and the microstructural observation of the subsurface zone. It was found that the amount of hydrogen trapping in 590MPa DP steels was related to the austenite volume fraction. It was confirmed that the distribution of micro-hardnesses according to the depth of the subsurface zone under the free surface showed the relationship of the depth of the hydrogen saturation between the charging conditions.

소형펀치시험을 이용한 자동차용 고강도강 수소취성 평가 (Evaluation of Hydrogen Embrittlement of High Strength Steel for Automobiles by Small Punch Test)

  • The hydrogen embrittlement of high strength steel for automobiles was evaluated by small punch (SP) test. The test specimens were fabricated to be 5 series, having various chemical compositions according to the processes of heat treatment and working. Hydrogen charging was electrochemically conducted for each specimen with varying of current density and charging time. It was shown that the SP energy and the maximum load decreased with increasing hydrogen charging time in every specimen. SEM investigation results for the hydrogen containing samples showed that the fracture behavior was a mixed fracture mode having 50% dimples and 50% cleavages. However, the fracture mode of specimens with charging hydrogen changed gradually to the brittle fracture mode, compared to the mode of other materials. All sizes and numbers of dimples decreased with increasing hydrogen charging time. These results indicate that hydrogen embrittlement is the major cause of fracture for high strength steels for automobiles; also, it is shown that the small punch test is a valuable test method for hydrogen embrittlement of high strength sheet steels for automobiles.

  • This gas analysis data come from the hydrogen which is produced by proton exchange membrane. Main impurities of hydrogen are methane, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. The concentration of impurities is ranged between 0.0191 to $315{\mu}mol/mol$ for each impurity. Methane contamination is believed from the electrode reaction between carbon doped electrode and produced hydrogen. Nitrogen contamination should take place the sampling process error, not from PEM hydrogen Production system.

  • This paper presents a study on the hydrogen embrittlement of Ti-6Al-4V alloys with different microstructures depending on annealing treatment. They were electrochemically charged with hydrogen and subjected to tensile tests to investigate hydrogen embrittlement behavior. Tensile test results showed that the elongation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy specimens was remarkably decreased with increasing the volume fraction of β phase after hydrogen charging. This is because the β phase with a relatively low diffusivity tends to easily form a hydride at grain boundaries during electrochemical hydrogen charging. After hydrogen charging of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy specimen, it found that silver particles were decorated mostly at the grain boundary, and coarser silver particles were usually formed in the specimen annealed at 950 ℃. Therefore, the specimen having higher β phase fraction shows a poor hydrogen embrittlement resistance because the β phase promotes the formation of coarse hydride during electrochemical hydrogen charging, which leads to a large decrease in ductility.
