  • Metal organic frameworks (MOF) have generated considerable interests as a potential candidate for hydrogen storage owing to their extremely high surface-to-volume ratio and low density. In this study, Pt nanoparticles of about 3 nm in size were introduced outside MOF-5 [$Zn_4O$(1,4-benzenedicarbocylate)3], which was then encapsulated with hydrophobic microporous carbon black (denoted CB@Pt/MOF-5) in order to enhance hydrogen uptake capacity without decreasing the specific surface area and hydrostability. To study the chemical composition, morphology, crystal information, and properties of the synthesized material, a variety of techniques is employed, including WXRD, XPS, ICP-AES, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, and N2 adsorption-desorption, confirming the formation of novel hybrid composite designated CB@Pt/MOF-5 with highly crystalline structure, large specific surface area and pore volume. In addition, $H_2$ storage capacity for resulting material was measured using magnetic suspension microbalance at 77 and 298 K under high-pressure condition, and the hydrostability was also tested by exposing the sample to 33% relative humidity at $23^{\circ}C$ and measuring XRD as a function of time.

  • $MgH_2$ was synthesized by hydriding chemical vapor deposition (HCVD). In this study, we examined the hydrogen storage property of $MgH_2$ synthesized by HCVD. The results of pressure-composition-temperature (PCT) measurement showed that the HCVDed $MgH_2$ reversibly absorbed hydrogen as much as 6 wt%. Each hydrogenation rate was very greater than the conventional alloy methods. The reason was that the particle size made by HCVD was small as approximately 1 ${\mu}m$. The PCT of $MgH_2$ made by HCVD methode was similar to a commercial $MgH_2$. The ${\Delta}H$ and ${\Delta}S$ value are respectively -76.8 $kJ/mol{\cdot}H_2$ and -137.4 $kJ/mol{\cdot}H_2$. Mg made by HCVD methode was activated easily than commercial Mg. Also the initial reaction rate was faster than that of commercial $MgH_2$. 70% of the total storage were stored during 400s.

  • In this study, the strength safety for 110 liter hydrogen fuel storage tank with 70MPa filling pressure has been analyzed using a FEM technique. The strength safety of a composite fuel tank in which is fabricated by an aluminum liner of 6061-T6 and carbon fiber wound composite layers of T800-24K and T700-12K of Toray, and MR60H-24P of Mitsubishi Ray has been investigated based on the criterion of a strength safety of US DOT-CFFC and Korean Standard. The FEM computed results on the strength safety of 70MPa hydrogen gas tank showed that the hydrogen fuel storage tank in which is fabricated by T800-24K and T700-12K of Toray, and MR60H-24P of Mitsubishi Ray is safe because those two carbon fibers have very similar material properties. But, the composite storage tank with a filling pressure of 70MPa in which is fabricated by T700-12K of Toray may not guaranty the strength safety, and thus this study recommends a composite hydrogen fuel tank under 60MPa.

  • The characteristics of hydrogen storage have been investigated in the Ti-Cr-Mo and Ti-Cr-V ternary alloys with bcc structure. The alloys were melted by arc furnace and remelted 4-5 times for homogeneity. The lattice parameters, microstructures and phases of the alloys were examined by SEM, EDX and XRD, and the Pressure-Composition isotherms of the alloys were measured. From these data the relationship of the maximum and effective hydrogen storage capacities vs. chemical composition, lattice parameter and the radius of tetrahedral site were analyzed and discussed. The results showed that all of these alloy, in the range of the this study, had mainly bcc solid solutions with small amount of Ti segregation due to a lower melting point of Ti compared with other elements. Lattice parameters of the alloys were very near to the atomic average values of lattice parameters of the constituent elements. It was also found that maximum hydrogen storage capacities of the Ti-Cr-Mo alloys increased with increasing Ti content and the radius of tetrahedral site but the effective hydrogen storage capacities decreased after showing the maximum. The hydrogen storage capacities of the Ti-Cr-V alloys were almost same even though the V contens were quite different from alloy to alloy and this could be attributed to the almost same Ti/Cr ratio of the alloys. The maximum effective hydrogen storage capacity of the Ti-Cr-Mo alloys was revealed at Ti content of about 40${\sim}$50 at% and radius of tetrahedral site of 0.43${\sim}$0.45 nm. The Ti-Cr-V alloys showed the hydrogen storage capacities of 3.0 wt% and effective hydrogen storage capacities of 1.5 wt%.

  • Efficient and inexpensive hydrogen storage is an essential prerequisite for the utilization of hydrogen, one of the new and clean energy sources for $21^{st}$ century. In this review, several storage techniques are briefly reviewed and compared. Especially, adsorption/storage via physisorption at low temperature, by using nanoporous adsorbents, is reviewed and evaluated for further developments. The adsorption over a porous material at low temperature is currently investigated deeply to fulfill the storage target. In this review, several characteristics needed for the high hydrogen adsorption capacity are introduced. It may be summarized that following characteristics are necessary for high storage capacity over porous materials: i) high surface area and micropore volume, ii) narrow pore size, iii) strong electrostatic field, and iv) coordinatively unsaturated sites, etc. Moreover, typical results demonstrating high storage capacity over nanoporous materials are summarized. Storage capacity up to 7.5 wt% at liquid nitrogen temperature and 80 atm is reported. Competitive adsorbents that are suitable for hydrogen storage may be developed via intensive and continuous studies on design, synthesis, manufacturing and modification of nanoporous materials.

  • Embrittlement of material by hydrogen charging should be cleared for safety of storage vessel of hydrogen and components deal with hydrogen. A stainless steel is generally used as materials for hydrogen transportation and storage, and it has a big advantage of corrosion resistance due to nickel component in material. In this study, microscopic damage behavior of stainless steel according to the hydrogen charging time using nondestructive evaluation was studied. The surface of stainless steel became more brittle as the hydrogen charging time increased. The parameters of nondestructive evaluation were also changed with the embrittlement of stainless steel surface by hydrogen charging. Ultrasonic test, which is the most generalized nondestructive technique, was applied to evaluate the relationship between the ultrasonic wave and mechanical properties of stainless steel by hydrogen charging. The attenuation coefficient of ultrasonic wave was increased with hydrogen charging time because of surface embrittlement of stainless steel. In addition, acoustic emission test was also used to study the dynamic behavior of stainless steel experienced hydrogen charging. AE event at the hydrogen charged specimen was obviously decreased at the plastic zone of stress-strain curves, while the number of event for the specimen of hydrogen free was dramatically generated when compared with the specimens underwent hydrogen charging.

  • Ammonia borane ($NH_3BH_3$), as a source material for energy generation and hydrogen storage, has attracted growing interest due to its high hydrogen content. We have investigated the synthesis of ammonia borane from sodium borohydride ($NaBH_4$) and ammonium chloride ($NH_4Cl$) utilizing a low-temperature process. From our results, we obtained a maximum synthetic yield of 98.2% of ammonia borane complex. The diammoniate diborane (DADB) was detected in about 5~10mol% with in the solid ammonia borane by solid-state $^{11}B$-NMR analysis. The synthesized solid ammonia borane products were studied to characterize hydrogen release upon thermal dehydrogenation.

  • Recently, a miniaturized measurement cell of effective thermal conductivity was developed to evaulate the heat transfer characteristics of hydrogen stroage material in the initial step of its development. In this work, the realiablity issues which can occur from this miniaturization of measurement cell were studied in detail by both experiments and numerical simulation of heat transfer. $LaNi_5$ as a reference was used for the reliability evaluation of the miniaturized measurement cell. Numerical simulations of heat transfer for this measurement system were verified through comparison with the experimental data. Under these reliablity studies, we discuss how to overcome the inherent drawbacks of this miniaturized system in order to achieve the high reliability.

  • A palladium can adsorb hydrogen and detect leaking hydrogen through changes in color and electrical resistance. This study is to evaluate the structural behavior of carbon fiber adding palladium composite materials used in the hydrogen storage vessel. A multi-scale analysis technique was used to analyze accurately the behavior of each material in relation to the microscopic composition. The multi-scale analysis is more proper and precise for composite materials because of considering the individual microscopic structure and properties of each material for composite materials. Also the crack evaluation was performed by XFEM analysis to confirm the reinforcement performance of aluminum as a liner of the hydrogen vessel. The results show that the addition of the palladium material increased the macroscopic stress, but microscopically the carbon fiber stress was reduced. It means the performance improvement of the palladium added carbon fiber/Al composite.

  • With the matters of climate change, energy security and resource depletion, a growing pressure exists to search for replacements for fossil fuels. Among various sustainable energy sources, hydrogen is thought of as a clean energy, and thus efficient hydrogen storage is a major issue. In order to realize efficient and safe hydrogen storage, various porous materials are being explored as solid-states materials for hydrogen storage. For those purposes, it is a prerequisite to characterize a material's textural properties to evaluate its hydrogen storage performance. In general, the textural properties of porous materials are analyzed by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement using nitrogen gas as a probe molecule. However, nitrogen BET analysis is sometimes not suitable for materials possessing small pores and surfaces with high curvatures like MOFs because the nitrogen molecule may sometimes be too large to reach the entire porous framework, resulting in an erroneous value. Hence, a smaller probe molecule for BET measurements (such as hydrogen) may be required. In this study, we describe a cost-effective novel cryostat for BET measurement that can reach temperatures below the liquefaction of hydrogen gas. Temperature and cold volume of the cryostat are corrected, and all measurements are validated using a commercial device. In this way, direct observation of the hydrogen adsorption properties is possible, which can translate directly into the determination of textural properties.
