In order to elucidate the mechanism associated with the solvent extraction of uranium(VI) using DEPA and DPPA as extractant the uranium(VI) complexes formed during the solvent extraction were isolated and characterized by means of IR, NMR, chemical analysis and molecular weight determination. It has been found that uranium(VI) replaces the acidic hydrogen ions of the extractants DEPA and DPPA to form chelated polynuclear complexes, the molecular weight of U(VI)-DEPA complex being $2.1{\times}10^4$. The isolated U(VI)-DEPA complex has been found to be the same chemical species as is formed during the solvent extraction process. In case of DEPA the distribution coefficient of uranium is the largest of the pure aqueous uranium solution and is increasing for the acidic solutions in the order of $H_3PO_4.
In this study, graphite composites were fabricated by warm press molding method to realize commercialization of PEM fuel cells. Graphite composites have been considered as alternative economic materials for bipolar plate of PEM fuel cells. Graphite powder that enables to provide electrical conductivity was selected as the main substance. The graphite powder was mixed with phenolic resin and the mixture was pressed using a warm press method. First of all, the graphite powder was pulverized with a ball mill for the dense packing of composite. As the ball milling time increases, the average size of particles decreases and the size distribution becomes narrow. This allows for improvement of the uniformity of graphite composite. However, the surface electrical resistivity of graphite composite increases as the ball milling time increases. It is due to that graphite particles with amorphous phase are generated on the surface due to the friction and collision of particles during pulverizing. We found that the contact electrical resistivity of graphite particles increases as the particle size decreases. The contact electrical resistivity of graphite powders was reduced due to high molding pressure by warm press molding. This leads to improvement of the mechanical properties of graphite composite. Hydrogen gas impermeability was measured with the graphite composite, showing a possibility of the application for bipolar plate in fuel cell. And, I-V curves of the graphite composite bipolar plate exhibit a similar performance to the graphite bipolar plate.
In semiconductor industries, dissolved oxygen is one of the most undesirable contaminants of ultrapure water. A method for dissolved oxygen removal (DOR) consists in the use of polymeric hollow fibres, loaded with a catalyst and fed with a reducing agent such as hydrogen. In this work, PVDF hollow fibres loaded with Pd were characterized by means of perporometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The hollow fibre analyzed shows a five-layer structure with remarkable morphological differences. An estimation of pore diameters and their distribution was performed giving a mean pore diameter of 100 nm. The permeance and selectivity of the fibres were measured using $H_2,\;N_2,\;O_2$ as single gases, at different operating conditions. An $H_2$ permeance of $37 mmol/m^2s$ was measured and $H_2/O_2$ and $H_2/N_2$ selectivities of ca. 3 were obtained. $H_2$ permeance was 1/3 when a water stream flows in the shell side. Catalytic fibrebehaviour was simulated using a mathematical model for a loop membrane reactor, considering only $O_2$ and $H_2$ diffusive transport inside the membrane and their catalytic reaction. Dimensionless parameters such as the Thiele modulus are employed to describe the system behaviour. The model agrees well with the experimental reaction data.
Distribution of superoxide dismutase (SOD) which catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals to hydrogen peroxide and oxygen has been examined in various genera of bacteria. SOD was produced by various bacteria independent of genus and species with variation in superoxide dismutase activity of each bacteria. Bacillus circulans which produced relatively large amount of SOD was selected and used to investigate the optimum culture conditions and further studies. The compositions of optimum culture medium for the enzyme production were 1% glucose, 2% polypeptone, 0.l% NaCl, and 0.2mM of methyl viologen and initial pH was 6.0. The highest enzyme production was observed after 20 hours of cultivation at 3$0^{\circ}C$ on a reciprocal shaker. The enzyme activity was maintained stably for a relatively long period by the addition of 5% ethanol in pH 5.0, 0.01M acetate buffer.
Ethylcystein dimer (ECD) was synthesized by dimerizatlon of L-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid in liquid ammania with sodium metal and successive esterification in ethanolic solution of hydrogen chlorde. The purified product was labeled with $^{99m}Tc$ in the presence of sodium glucarate(pH= 5.6) and stannous chloride. Best result was obtained from the preparation con sisting of 0.1mg ECD, $40{\mu}l$ of 0.4M sodium glucarate (pH=5.6), and $20{\mu}g$ of stannous chloride. The labeling efficiency was 90% with previous condition. The labeled $^{99m}Tc$-ECD was stable at least for 3 hours in PBS(pH=7.4) at room temperature. About 10mCi of $^{99m}Tc$-ECD was injected to normal volunteer, and SPECT image of brain was obtained by triple head camera 10 minutes after inection. The image showed similar distribution of radioactivity in brain with that of HMPAO image.
This study was carried out to investigate the physicochemical and adsorptive characteristics of black carbon (BC) materials for cesium in case of severe nuclear accidents. The BC was prepared with a xylem of oak and pine trees incompletely combusted with different ramp rate and final temperature. Carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) atomic ratios, BET, pore structure, and zeta potential were characterized for the produced BC. A low cesium concentration ($C_w{\approx}10^{-7}M$) was used for sorption batch experiments. The H/C and O/C ratios of BC decreased with the increase of final temperature, which indicates a carbonization of the wood materials regardless of ramp rate and tree species. However, SEM images showed different pore structures depending on tree species such as steric and plate-like for oak-BC and pine-BC, respectively. The greatest sorption distribution coefficients of $K_{d,Cs}{\approx}1,200{\sim}1,800L\;kg^{-1}$ were observed for the oak-BC produced at $400^{\circ}C$, while comparatively low $K_{d,Cs}$ < $100L\;kg^{-1}$ for pine-BC. In addition, the sorption capabilities of BC declined with the increase of combustion temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$, because high temperature destroyed surface functionalities with the rise of ash components in the BC. Therefore, the sorption processes of BC for radioactive cesium are predominantly controlled by final production temperature of BC as well as raw materials (e.g., tree species).

In severe accident conditions of light water reactors, the loss of coolant may cause problems in integrity of zirconium fuel cladding. Under the condition of the loss of coolant, the zirconium fuel cladding can be exposed to high temperature steam and reacted with them by producing of hydrogen, which is caused by the failure in oxidation resistance of zirconium cladding materials during the loss of coolant accident scenarios. In order to avoid these problems, we develop a multi-metallic layered composite (MMLC) fuel cladding which compromises between the neutronic advantages of zirconium-based alloys and the accident-tolerance of non-zirconium-based metallic materials. Cold pilgering process is a common tube manufacturing process, which is complex material forming operation in highly non-steady state, where the materials undergo a long series of deformation resulting in both diameter and thickness reduction. During the cold pilgering process, MMLC claddings need to reduce the outside diameter and wall thickness. However, multi-layers of the tube are expected to occur different deformation processes because each layer has different mechanical properties. To improve the utilization of the pilgering process, 3-dimensional computational analyses have been made using a finite element modeling technique. We also analyze the dimensional change, strain and stress distribution at MMLC tube by considering the behavior of rolls such as stroke rate and feed rate.
This study systematically compared two hybrid deterministic/Monte Carlo transport codes, ADVANTG/MCNP and MAVRIC, in solving a difficult shielding problem for a real-world spent fuel storage cask. Both hybrid codes were developed based on the consistent adjoint driven importance sampling (CADIS) methodology but with different implementations. The dose rate distributions on the cask surface were of primary interest and their predicted results were compared with each other and with a straightforward MCNP calculation as a baseline case. Forward-Weighted CADIS was applied for optimization toward uniform statistical uncertainties for all tallies on the cask surface. Both ADVANTG/MCNP and MAVRIC achieved substantial improvements in overall computational efficiencies, especially for gamma-ray transport. Compared with the continuous-energy ADVANTG/MCNP calculations, the coarse-group MAVRIC calculations underestimated the neutron dose rates on the cask's side surface by an approximate factor of two and slightly overestimated the dose rates on the cask's top and side surfaces for fuel gamma and hardware gamma sources because of the impact of multigroup approximation. The fine-group MAVRIC calculations improved to a certain extent and the addition of continuous-energy treatment to the Monte Carlo code in the latest MAVRIC sequence greatly reduced these discrepancies. For the two continuous-energy calculations of ADVANTG/MCNP and MAVRIC, a remaining difference of approximately 30% between the neutron dose rates on the cask's side surface resulted from inconsistent use of thermal scattering treatment of hydrogen in concrete.
Unlike carbohydrats and fats, alcohol is essentially foreign to the body and it is known that the body get rid of it by oxidizing alcohol maily in the liver. Acetaldehyde is produced during ethanol metabolism and is known to be oxidized mainly by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). ALDH activity was found mainly in the mitochondrial fraction but a significant ALDH activity was also present in microsomal and cytosol fraction. Wistar rats (150~200 g, male) were given freely with 12% ethanol (Control) and/or 12% ethanol containing 0.1% ginseng saponins (Test) instead of water for 6 days and the liver was analyzed. ALDH activities of both control and test group were lower than that of normal group but test AkDH was less inhibited than control. ADH activies of both control and test were slightly higher than that of normal group but our previous data showed that it became gradually steady after prolonged ethanol feeding. MEOS activities of both control and test group were much higher than that of normal group. MEOS enzymes are inducible but the activity of test group was greatly higher than that of control. Ethanol containing [1-i4C] ethanol (5 $\mu$Ci) was injected to the above three groups and 30 min later, the distribution of radioactivity of hepatic lipids was investigated. Radioactivities of hepatic lipids of both control and test group were higher than that of normal group, however, that of test group was much lower than that of control. Analysis of individual lipids showed that phospholipid biosynthesis was significantly impaired and fatty acid and triglycerides biosynthesis were greatly stimulated. However, it was realized that the saponin prevented phospholipid biosynthesis depression and the increase of triglyceride biosynthesis considerably. It seemed that the saponin might stimulate ADH, ALDH and MEOS and the acetaldehyde formed would be removed faster. The excess hydrogen can be shunt more quickly into lipid biosynthesis. Electron microscopic observation showed that the hepatic cell of control group was si gnificantly damaged. Mitochondria were swollen and rough endoplasmic reticulum were dilated, however, hepatocytes of test group were not damaged.
KD₂PO₄ single crystals were grown from D₂O with reagent KH₂PO₄ and the crystal structure was determined by X-ray and neutron diffraction methods. The crystals are tetragonal at room temperature, I42d, with lattice parameters of a=7.4633(7), c=6.9785(5) Å and Z=4. Intensity data were collected on an Enraf-nonius CAD4 diffractometer with a graphite monochromated MoK/sub α/ radiation (λ=0.7107Å) and on the neutron four circle single crystal diffractometer with Ge(331) monochromated neutron beam (λ=0.997Å). The structure was refined by full-matrix least-square to final R and wR values of 0.030 and 0.072, respectively, for 204 observed reflections with I>2σ(I) by X-ray diffraction and to final R=0.041 and wR=0.096 for 144 observed relfecdtions by neutron diffraction. The O…O distance of 2.516(4)Å obtained by X-ray diffraction is the same as that of 2.515(4)Å by neutron diffraction. On the other hand, the O-D/H distance of 0.84(4)Å by X-ray diffraction is considerably shorter than 1.029(7) Åby neutron diffraction. Hydrogen and deuterium can be readily distinguished by neutrons. In this crystal 66% of H-positions were substituted by D and the rest 34% occupied by H. The phase transition temperature of DKDP obtained with deuteration levels is f193K. This value agrees fairly well with the result of DSC measurement. The nuclear density distribution by neutron diffraction provides an observation of the disordered state of D/H in KD₂PO₄ at room temperature.
