  • Biogas is a renewable fuel from anaerobic digestion of organic matters such as sewage sludge, manure and food waste. Raw biogas consists mainly of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and water. Biogas may also contain other impurities such as siloxanes, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons. Efficient power technologies such as fuel cell demand ultra-low concentration of containments in the biogas feed, imposing stringent requirements on fuel purification technology. Biogas is upgraded from pressure swing adsorption after biogas purification process which consists of water, $H_2S$ and siloxane removal. A polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell power plant is designed to operate on reformate produced from upgraded biogas by steam reformer.

돈사 악취 저감을 위한 바이오필터 개발 (Development of Biofilter for Reducing Offensive Odor from Pig House)

  • 국내에서 구입이 용이한 부숙수피와 펄라이트를 부피비 7:3으로 혼합하여 혼합충전재에 암모니아 산화균 Rhodococcus equi A3와 황 산화균 Alcaligenes sp. S5-5.2를 접종한 후, 개발한 양압식 상향류 방식의 바이오필터에 혼합충전재를 충전하여 돈사에서 발생하는 암모니아 및 황화수소에 대한 악취가스 제거성능을 실험을 실시하였다. 혼합충전재에 미생물을 접종한 후 72시간동안 순치하였을 때의 미생물 생균수와 24시간 간격으로 측정하였을 때의 미생물 생균수가 거의 같은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 개발한 바이오필터가 미생물의 생육조건을 유지하는데 성공했다고 판단된다. 또한 암모니아 가스의 유입농도는 평균 $22.8{\pm}5.2mgL^{-1}$이었고, 배출농도는 평균 $2.1{\pm}0.3mgL^{-1}$, 제거율은 90.8%이었다. 흐리고 황화수소의 유입농도는 평균 $2.7{\pm}1.2mgL^{-1}$이었고, 배출농도는 $0.5{\pm}0.2mgL^{-1}$, 제거율은 81.5%로 비교적 높았다. 이와 같이 부숙수피와 펄라이트를 혼합하여 만든 혼합충전재를 충전한 바이오필터가 악취가스 제거율이 비교적 높고 가격이 저렴한 것을 고려해 볼 때, 기존의 다른 충전재을 이용한 바이오필터보다 개발한 바이오필터가 양돈가에서 이용하는데 유리한 것으로 판단된다.

GC의 주입방식 차에 따른 고농도 악취황 성분의 검량오차 연구 : 주입부피의 고정방식 대비 주입농도의 고정방식 간 비교연구 (The Selection of Sample Injection Modes and Its Effect on the Calibration Bias in S Gas Detection by Gas Chromatography)

  • In this work, analytical bias arising from the gas chromatographic determination of sulfur compounds was evaluated by the application of direct loop injection method to the GC/PFPD detection of four sulfur compounds including H$_{2}$S, CH$_{3}$SH, DMS, and DMDS. For the proper evaluation of analytical uncertainties involved in GC calibration, we employed two comparative techniques of calibration at fxed concentration injection (CFCI) vs calibration at fixed volume injection (CFVI) method. The results of our study indicate that CFCI method exhibits very poor sensitivity due to the matrix effect with varying injection volumes. On the other hand, as CFVI method overcomes such limitation, it can be used to obtain very accurate quantification of S compounds at their high concentration levels above a few to a few tens ppb.

Impact of Fermentation Rate Changes on Potential Hydrogen Sulfide Concentrations in Wine

  • The correlation between alcoholic fermentation rate, measured as carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) evolution, and the rate of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) formation during wine production was investigated. Both rates and the resulting concentration peaks in fermentor headspace $H_2S$ were directly impacted by yeast assimilable nitrogenous compounds in the grape juice. A series of model fermentations was conducted in temperature-controlled and stirred fermentors using a complex model juice with defined concentrations of ammonium ions and/or amino acids. The fermentation rate was measured indirectly by noting the weight loss of the fermentor; $H_2S$ was quantitatively trapped in realtime using a pre-calibrated $H_2S$ detection tube which was inserted into a fermentor gas relief port. Evolution rates for $CO_2$ and $H_2S$ as well as the relative ratios between them were calculated. These fermentations confirmed that total sulfide formation was strongly yeast strain-dependent, and high concentrations of yeast assimilable nitrogen did not necessarily protect against elevated $H_2S$ formation. High initial concentrations of ammonium ions via addition of diammonium phosphate (DAP) caused a higher evolution of $H_2S$ when compared with a non-supplemented but nondeficient juice. It was observed that the excess availability of a certain yeast assimilable amino acid, arginine, could result in a more sustained $CO_2$ production rate throughout the wine fermentation. The contribution of yeast assimilable amino acids from conventional commercial yeast foods to lowering of the $H_2S$ formation was marginal.

Battery-less Pork Freshness Monitoring Based on High-Efficiency RF Energy Harvesting

  • Food safety has emerged as a growing concern for human health in recent times. Consuming contaminated food may lead to serious health problems, and therefore, a system for monitoring food freshness that is both non-detrimental to the quality of food and highly accurate is required to ensure that only high-quality fresh food packages are provided to the customers. This paper proposes a method to monitor and detect food quality using a compact smart sensor tag. The smart tag is composed of three ultra-low-power sensors, which monitor four major indicators of food freshness: temperature, humidity, and the concentrations of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gases. An RF energy scavenging circuit is integrated into the smart sensor tag to harvest energy from radio waves at a high frequency of 13.56 MHz to supply sufficient power to the tag. Experimental results show that the proposed energy harvester can efficiently obtain energy at a distance of approximately 40 cm from a 4 W reader. In addition, the proposed smart sensor tag can operate without any battery, thereby eliminating the requirement of frequent battery replacement and consequently decreasing the cost. Meanwhile, the freshness of preserved pork is continuously monitored under two conditions--room temperature and refrigerator temperature--both of which are the most common temperatures under which food is generally stored. The food-monitoring experiments are conducted over a period of one week using the proposed battery-less tag. Based on the experimental results, the food assessment is classified into four categories: fresh, normal, low, and spoiled.

지렁이 분변토와 주정슬러지 혼합 배양액을 이용한 Biofilter에서의 고농도 악취제거 (Removal of High Odor Concentration with Biofilter using Mixture of Earthworm Cast and Distillery Sludge)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the removal of high odor concentration from swine wastewater treatment facility by full scale biofilter using liquid with deodorant mixed with earthworm cast and distillery sludge. Methods: The supply of the culture liquid to the microorganism on the media in the biofilter increases the activity and growth of biomass. The experimental equipment was biofilter tower with treatment capacity of 90 m 3/min. The experimental conditions included gas flow of $60m^3/min$, retention time of 20 sec, and gas/liquid ratio of 67. Results: With changing season from winter to summer, the inlet odor concentration of ammonia increased from 2.5 ppm to 29 ppm, and of hydrogen sulfide from 21 ppm to 91 ppm, respectively. The odor treatment system with biofilter using the culture liquid was stable when the high loading rate increased and showed excellent removal grade with an average of 96.7% for ammonia, and an average of 93.7% for hydrogen sulfide. The pH and SCOD in the recirculating culture liquid near the bottom of the biofilter tower decreased with operation time, but its influence on the odor removal rate was negligible, because the organic matter (SCOD) was replaced by some culture liquid supplied 2-4 times per day. Conclusions: The biofilter using culture liquid could successfully remove high odor concentration which was generated from swine wastewater treatment facility.

Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans를 고정화한 생물반응기와 흡수탑을 이용한 고농도 황화수소 제거 (Removal of High Strength Hydrogen Sulfide Gas using a Bioreactor Immobilized with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and a Chemical Absorption Scrubber)

  • 고농도의 황화수소 가스를 제거하기 위하여 철촉매인 $Fe^{3+}$ 을 생산할 수 있는 철산화 세균 A. ferrooxidans를 다공성 세라믹 담체에 고정화한 생물반응기와 황화수소가 $Fe^{3+}$ 와 화학반응에 의해 elemental sulfur로 제거되는 흡수탑 반응기로 구성된 2단계 생물학적 탈황공정을 연구하였다. 생물반응기는 4회 이상의 반복 회분식 배양을 통해 안정화 되었고, 정상상태에서의 평균 철산화 속도는 $0.89kg{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ 이었다. 2단계 생물 탈황공정은 약 54일 동안 장기간 성공적으로 조업이 가능하였다. 흡수탑 반응기에서는 공간속도를 70 $h^{-1}$ 의 조건하에서 37.000 ppm의 고농도 $H_{2}S$ 제거 임계 부하량은 3.3 kg $S{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ 로 우수하였다. 장기간 조업하는 동안 고정화 세포의 농도는 일정하게 유지되었다.

양돈장 내의 환경 요인에 따른 내부 유해인자의 변동 모니터링 (Monitoring of Internal Harmful Factors According to Environmental Factors in Pig Farm)

  • With the decrease of the agricultural population in Korea, the workers who is vulnerable to labor are increasing in agricultural industry because of aging, feminization of population. They are exposed in poor working environment with higher temperature and concentrations of dust, gas. Higher concentration of harmful gas and dust can cause chronic and acute disease to workers depending on exposure intensity and frequency. In order to improve the working environment in the livestock facilities, It is important to secure monitoring data of the thermal environment and the concentration of harmful gases and fine dust. Multi-point measurement was performed to analyze the regional environmental conditions in the pig rooms. When analyzing the working environment, video monitoring was conducted to analyze the concentration changes of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and fine dust according to worker movement and work type. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide monitoring result showed 1.5~2 times higher concentrations than other work when working in the pigs living zone, and 2~4 times higher than other work when working to increase the activity of pigs. In the case of fine dust, the result was 1.3 times higher than the worker's exposure standard in a specific work. The concentrations of gases and dusts from pig farms are not of concern for acute poisoning in normal work, but there is a risk of chronic respiratory disease if they are continuously exposed. Accordingly, there is a need for development of work environment monitoring device tailored to workers and preparation of alternatives.

무기악취와 슬러지 동시처리를 위한 저온플라즈마의 적용 (Application of Non-Thermal Plasma for the Simultaneous Removal of Odor and Sludge)

  • 본 연구에서는, 하폐수 처리시설에서 발생하는 기체상 무기악취물질을 저온 플라즈마 공정으로 제거하고, 악취물질과 반응 후 배출되는 오존 함유 배가스로 유기성 슬러지의 감량과 가용화 효과를 얻고자 복합반응기를 구성하였으며 일련의 실험을 진행하였다. 플라즈마를 통과한 대상 무기악취물질인 황화수소는 플라즈마를 단독으로 거쳤을 시 약 70%의 처리효율을 보였으며, 최종적으로 슬러지 반응조까지 통과했을 경우는 99% 이상의 처리효율을 보였다. 이 때 플라즈마 공정에서 배출되는 가스에 포함된 오존은 슬러지 반응조를 통과하여 90~100%의 제거효율을 보였다. 배가스가 슬러지 반응기에 산기되면, 유기물 산화가 단계적으로 진행되며 4시간 반응 시 슬러지의 TCOD는 약 50~60% 감소하고 SCOD는 4~5배 증가하였다. 따라서 가용화율은 운전 시간이 지날수록 증가하여 4시간 이후 약 10%까지 증가하였다. 결과적으로 저온 플라즈마와 슬러지 산기반응조 복합공정을 적용하면, 하폐수 처리시설 운영상에 나타나는 악취배출과 잉여슬러지 처분 문제에 동시 적용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.
