Hydrogen Isotopes Recovery Using Pd Membrane and Process Simulation (Pd 분리막을 이용한 수소동위원소 회수 실험과 공정 시뮬레이션)

  • Hydrogen isotopes, which are used as raw materials in fusion reaction, participate in the reaction only in small amount, and most of them are released together with impurities. In order to recover and reuse only hydrogen isotopes from this exhaust gas, a recovery process is required, and most of the hydrogen isotopes can be recovered using a Pd Membrane. In this study, the recovery rate of hydrogen isotopes was measured through the first and second stage Pd membrane experiments. In the case of the experiment using a single stage Pd membrane, about 99.2%, and in the case of the first stage and second stage Pd membrane connection experiments, a recovery rate of 99.9% or more was obtained. Therefore, the recovery rate of Pd membrane process applied to hydrogen can be applied to hydrogen isotopes. In addition, the simulation model was established using aspen custom modeler, a commercial software, and the validity of the simulation was checked by applying the references and experimental data. The simulation results based on the experimental data showed a difference of 2% or less.

A Study on PSA Controll Strategy for Part Load Operation of a Hydrogen Generator (수소추출기의 부분부하 운전을 위한 PSA 제어전략에 대한 연구)

  • Fuel cell systems are being supplied to households and buildings to reduce greenhouse gases. The fuel cell systems have problems of high cost and slow startup due to fuel processors. Greenhouse gas reduction of the fuel cell systems is also limited by using natural gas. The problems can be solved by using a hydrogen generator consisting of a reformer and pressure swing adsorption (PSA). However, part load operation of the hydrogen generator is required depending on the hydrogen consumption. In this paper, PSA operation strategies are investigated for part load of the hydrogen generator. Adsorption and purge time were changed in the range of part load ratio between from 0.5 to 1.0. As adsorption time increased, hydrogen recovery increased from 29.09% to 48.34% at 0.5 of part load ratio. Hydrogen recovery and hydrogen purity were also improved by increasing adsorption and purge time. However, hydrogen recovery dramatically decreased to 35.01% at 0.5 of part load ratio.

Hydrogen Production with High Temperature Solar Heat Thermochemical Cycle Using Dual-zone Reactor and CeO2/ZrO2 Foam Device (Dual-zone reactor와 CeO2/ZrO2 Foam Device를 이용한 고온 태양열 열화학 싸이클의 수소 생산)

  • In this study, an artificial solar simulator composed of a 2.5 kW Xe-Arc lamp and mirror reflector was used to carry out the solar thermal two step thermochemical water decomposition cycle which can produce high efficiency continuous hydrogen production. Through various operating conditions, the change of hydrogen production due to the possibility of a dual-zone reactor and heat recovery were experimentally analyzed. Based on the reaction temperature of Thermal-Reduction step and Water-Decomposition step at $1,400^{\circ}C$ and $1,000^{\circ}C$ respectively, the hydrogen production decreased by 23.2% under the power off condition, and as a result of experiments using heat recovery technology, the hydrogen production increased by 33.8%. Therefore, when a thermochemical two-step water decomposition cycle is conducted using a dual-zone reactor with heat recovery, it is expected that the cycle can be operated twice over a certain period of time and the hydrogen production amount is increased by at least 53.5% compared to a single reactor.

Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide on Pretreatment of Oakwood in a Percolation Process (Percolation 공정에서 참나무의 전처리에 과산화수소가 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of hydrogen peroxide on pretreatment of oakwood was investigated. Reaction temperature was $170^{\circ}C$ and reaction solutions used in pretreatment were aqueous ammonia, sulfuric acid and pure water. When 10% ammonia solution was used, the extents of delignification and hemicellulose recovery were 55% and 26%, respectively. These values were significantly higher as delinigfication and lower as hemicellulose recovery than those of acid hydrolysis. To overcome this problem, hydrogen peroxide was added into ammonia solution stream to increase hemicellulose recovery. But delignification and hemicellulose recovery were not increased as much as hydrogen peroxide loading was increased. And as hydrogen peroxide loading was increased, the decomposition of sugars solubilized from hemicellulose and cellulose were increased. So there were significant differences between the total amount in solid residue and liquid hydrolyzate, and the total amount in the original biomass. It was found that hydrogen peroxide added was reacted with substrate packed mostly in the front part of reactor. In order to increase hemicellulose recovery, it was necessary to treat with acidic solution than with alkali solution. Effect of hydrogen peroxide was higher in water than acid solution.

Anaerobic Hydrogen Fermentation and Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) for Decentralized Sanitation and Reuse-Organic Removal and Resource Recovery

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate integrated anaerobic hydrogen fermentation and membrane bioreactor (MBR) for on-site domestic wastewater treatment and resource recovery. A synthetic wastewater (COD 17,000 mg/L) was used as artificial brown water which will be discharged from urine diversion toilet and fed into a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) type anaerobic reactor with inclined plate. The effluent of anaerobic reactor mixed with real household grey water (COD 700 mg/L) was further treated by MBR for reuse. An optimum condition maintained in anaerobic reactor was HRT of 8 hrs, pH 5.5, SRT of 5 days and temperature of $37^{\circ}C$. COD removal of 98% was achieved from the overall system. Total gas production rate and hydrogen content was 4.6 L/day and 52.4% respectively. COD mass balance described the COD distribution in the system via reactor byproducts and effluent COD concentration. The results of this study asserts that, anaerobic hydrogen fermentation combined with MBR is a potent system in stabilizing waste strength and clean hydrogen recovery which could be implemented for onsite domestic wastewater treatment and reuse.

  • Hydrogen is bridge fuel with high energy content and environmentally friendly to satisfy the stringent IMO regulation relating to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. There is growing interest in hydrogen in numerous nations and regions illustrated by an extensive range of research and development in technology. Regarding maritime applications, researchers have recognized the utilization of hydrogen as a fuel for fuel cells, a device that converts the chemical energy of the fuel to electrical energy. Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), with high working temperature, is easy to combine with the waste heat recovery cycles/devices to increase output power and thermodynamic performances as well. Furthermore, the cold energy from liquid hydrogen supplied to SOFC can also be used to generate more power. In this study, we proposed a SOFC integrated system with the idea of combining the waste heat recovery from the SOFC exhaust stream and cold energy utilization from LH2. The designation is aimed to target small-scale vessel which uses electric propulsion for short distances voyage.

Large-Scale PSA Process for Hydrogen Separation from Gas Mixture (혼합가스에서 수소분리를 위한 애용량 PSA공정)

  • For large scale separation hydrogen from different mixing ratio(60/40 and 80/20 vol.%) of hydrogen and methane $1Nm^3/hr$ and $4Nm^3/hr$ 2bed-6step pressure swing adsorption(PSA) process was used, respectively. The effects of the feed gas pressure, adsorption time, the feed flow rate and the P/F(purge to feed) ratio on the process performance were evaluated. In the $1Nm^3/hr$ PSA results, 11 atm adsorption pressure and 0.10 P/F ratio might be optimal values to obtain more than 75 % recovery and 99 % purity hydrogen in these processing. The optimum feed flowrate was 22 LPM and 17 LPM in the ratio 60/40 and 80/20, respectively. In the $4Nm^3/hr$ PSA results, 10 atm adsorption pressure might be simulated values to obtain more than 80 % recovery and 99 % purity hydrogen in these processing.

A Study on Hydrogen Production with High Temperature Solar Heat Thermochemical Cycle by Heat Recovery (열회수에 따른 고온 태양열 열화학 싸이클의 수소 생산에 관한 연구)

  • Two-step water splitting thermochemical cycle with $CeO_2/ZrO_2$ foam device was investigated by using a solar simulator composed of 2.5 kW Xe-Arc lamp and mirror reflector. The hydrogen production of $CeO_2/ZrO_2$ foam device depending on heat recovery of Thermal-Reduction step and Water-Decomposition step was analyzed, and the hydrogen production of $CeO_2/ZrO_2$ and $NiFe_2O_4/ZrO_2$ foam devices was compared. Resultantly, the quantity of hydrogen generation increased by 52.02% when the carrier gas of Thermal-Reduction step is preheated to $200^{\circ}C$ and, when the $N_2/steam$ is preheated to $200^{\circ}C$ in the Water-Decomposition step, the quantity of hydrogen generation increased by 35.85%. Therefore, it is important to retrieve the heat from the highly heated gases discharged from each of the reaction spaces in order to increase the reaction temperature of each of the stages and thereby increasing the quantity of hydrogen generated through this.

Lithium Recovery from NCM Lithium Ion Battery by Hydrogen Reduction Followed by Water Leaching (NCM계 리튬이온 배터리 양극재의 수소환원과 수침출에 의한 리튬 회수)

  • The demand for electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries is continuously increasing. Recovery of valuable metals from waste lithium-ion batteries will be necessary in the future. This research investigated the effect of reaction temperature on the lithium recovery ratio from hydrogen reduction followed by water leaching from lithium-ion battery NCM-based cathode materials. As the reaction temperature increased, the weight loss ratio observed after initiation increased rapidly owing to hydrogen reduction of NiO and CoO; at the same time, the H2O amount generated increased. Above 602 ℃, the anode materials Ni and Co were reduced and existed in the metallic phases. As the hydrogen reduction temperature was increased, the Li recovery ratio also increased; at 704 ℃ and above, the Li recovery ratio reached a maximum of approximately 92%. Therefore, it is expected that Li can be selectively recovered by hydrogen reduction as a waste lithium-ion battery pretreatment, and the residue can be reprocessed to efficiently separate and recover valuable metals.

A Study on the Optimal Operating Conditions for an Unreacted Hydrogen Oxidation-Heat Recovery System for the Safety of the Hydrogen Utilization Process (수소 활용공정 안전성 확보를 위한 미반응 수소 산화-열 회수 시스템의 운전 조건 최적화 연구)

  • In this study, a catalytic oxidation-heat recovery system was designed that can remove unreacted with a concentration of about 1% to 6% in the exhaust gas of hydrogen fuel cells and recover heat to ensure safety in the hydrogen economy. The safety system was devised by filling hydrogen oxidation catalysts at room temperature that can remove unreacted hydrogen without any energy source, and an exhaust-heat recovery device was integrated to efficiently recover the heat released from the oxidation reaction. Through CFD analysis, variations in pressure and fluid within the system were shown depending on the filling conditions of the hydrogen oxidation system. In addition, it was found that waste heat could be recovered by optimizing the temperature of the exhaust gas, flow rate, and pressure conditions within the heat recovery system and securing hot water above 40 ℃ by utilizing the exhaust gas oxidation heat source above 300 ℃. Through this study, it was possible to confirm the potential of utilizing hydrogen processes, which are applied in small to medium-sized systems such as hydrogen fuel cells, as a safety system by evaluating them at a pilot scale. Additionally, it could be a safety guideline for responding to unexpected hydrogen safety accidents through further pilot-scale studies.
