A new wood-degrading fungus Trichophyton rubrum LKY-7 secretes a high level of laccase in a glucose-peptone liquid medium. The production of laccase by the fungus was barely induced by 2,5-xylidine. The laccase has been purified to homogeneity through three chromatography steps in an overall yield of 40%. The molecular mass of the purified laccase was about 65 kDa by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The purified laccase had the distinct blue color and had basic spectroscopic features of a typical blue laccase: two absorption maxima at 278 and 610 nm and a shoulder at 338 nm. The N-terminus of the laccase has been sequenced, revealing high homology to laccases from wood-degrading white-rot fungi such as Ceriporiopsis subvermispora. The enzyme had a "low" redox potential (0.5 V vs normal hydrogen electrode), yet it was one of the most active laccases in oxidizing a series of representative substrates/mediators. Compared with other fungal laccases, the laccase has a very low Km value with ABTS [2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid] as a substrate and a very high Km value with violuric acid as a substrate. The laccase has the isoelectric point of 4.0. The laccase had very acidic optimal pH values (pH 3-4) while it was more stable at neutral pH than at acidic pH. The laccase oxidized hydroquinone faster than catechol and pyrogallol. The oxidation of tyrosine by the laccase was not detectable under the reaction conditions. The laccase was strongly inhibited by sodium azide and sodium fluoride. fluoride.

Sulfur hexafluoride ($SF_6$), one of the most potent greenhouse gases, is known as a hydrate former and has been studied at the high pressure up to 1.3 GPa with gas mixtures and with aqueous surfactant. Since we regard $SF_6$ as a potential promoter molecule that can stabilize hydrate structure more effectively compare to the other promoters, further investigation is required to verify the stabilizing ability of $SF_6$ in the hydrate structure. However, the insoluble nature of $SF_6$ in water or gases hinders fine scale analyses. This work discusses the data obtained by using molecular dynamics simulations of structure II (sII) clathrate hydrates containing $SF_6$ and $H_2$. The simulations were performed using the TIP4P/Ice model for water molecule and a previously reported $SF_6$ molecular model (optimized at the pure $SF_6$ single phase system (Olivet and Vega, 2007)), and a $H_2$ molecular model (adapted from the THF+$H_2$ hydrate system (Alavi et al., 2006)). The simulations are performed to observe the stability of $SF_6$ and $H_2$ in the sII clathrate hydrate system with varying temperature and pressure conditions and occupancies of $SF_6$ and $H_2$, which cannot be easily tuned experimentally. We observe that stability of H2 enclathrated in the hydrate structure more affected by the occupancy of $SF_6$ molecules and temperature than pressure, which ranges from 1 to 100 bar.
We have developed an extreme high vacuum (XHV) system using a new combination pump cpmposed of a suitably shaped NEG(Non-Evaporable Getters) in the body of a sputter-ion pump (SIP). The stainless-steel test chamber was used which had been well oxidized at $450^{\circ}C$ and already yielded XHV with a turbomolecular pumping system. The pressure was measured by a Leybold extractor gauge (EXG,limit:1~$2{\times}10^{-12}$torr, but in the ultimate pressure regionthe EXG shows an unusual sign as $-0.{\times}10^{-12}$ torr which indicates much lower pressure range than its available lower limit. These results are mainly due to the high pumping speed of NEG for hydrogen. Furthermore, use of the SIP combined with the NEG as a XHV pumping system implies the potential for actualization of the surface analysis under XHV environment, and allows one to have a chance tp meet a new world in nanometer science and technology.

Silicon nanowires (SiNWs), due to their unusual quantum-confinement effects that lead to superior electrical and optical properties compared to those of the bulk silicon, have been widely researched as a potential building block in a variety of novel electronic devices. The conventional means for the synthesis of SiNWs has been the vapor-liquid-solid method using chemical vapor deposition; however, this method is time consuming, environmentally unfriendly, and do not support vertical growth. As an alternate, the electroless etching method has been proposed, which uses metal catalysts contained in aqueous hydrofluoric acids (HF) for vertically etching the bulk silicon substrate. This new method can support large-area growth in a short time, and vertically aligned SiNWs with high aspect ratio can be readily synthesized with excellent reproducibility. Nonetheless, there still are rooms for improvement such as the poor surface characteristics that lead to degradation in electrical performance, and non-uniformity of the diameter and shapes of the synthesized SiNWs. Here, we report a facile method of SiNWs synthesis having uniform sizes, diameters, and shapes, which may be other than just cylindrical shapes using a modified nanosphere lithography technique. The diameters of the polystyrene nanospheres can be adjustable through varying the time of O2 plasma treatment, which serve as a mask template for metal deposition on a silicon substrate. After the removal of the nanospheres, SiNWs having the exact same shape as the mask are synthesized using wet etching technique in a solution of HF, hydrogen peroxide, and deionized water. Different electrical and optical characteristics were obtained according to the shapes and sizes of the SiNWs, which implies that they can serve specific purposes according to their types.

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are receiving great attention because of their unusual material properties, such as high thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, and electrical resistance. However, high-throughput and high-efficiency synthesis of BNNTs has been hindered due to the high boiling point of boron (${\sim}4000^{\circ}C$) and weak interaction between boron and nitrogen. Although, hydrogen-catalyzed plasma synthesis has shown potential for scalable synthesis of BNNTs, the direct use of $H_2$ gas as a precursor material is not strongly recommended, as it is extremely flammable. In the present study, BNNTs have been synthesized using radio-frequency inductively coupled thermal plasma (RF-ITP) catalyzed by solid-state ammonium chloride ($NH_4Cl$), a safe catalyst materials for BNNT synthesis. Similar to BNNTs synthesized from h-BN (hexagonal boron nitride) + $H_2$, successful fabrication of BNNTs synthesized from $h-BN+NH_4Cl$ is confirmed by their sheet-like properties, FE-SEM images, and XRD analysis. In addition, improved dispersion properties in aqueous solution are found in BNNTs synthesized from $h-BN+NH_4Cl$.
Sperm chromatin integrity is essential for successful fertilization and development of an embryo. Reported here is a quantification of DNA fragments which is intimately associated with reproductive potential to provide one of criteria for sperm chromatin integrity. Three sperm populations were considered: CONTROL (no treatment), UV irradiation (48mW/$cm^2$, 1h) and $H_2O_2$ (oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide, 10 mM, 50 mM and 100 mM). DNA fragments in boar sperm were evaluated by using ligation-mediated quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (LM-qPCR) assay, which relies on real-time qPCR to provide a measure of blunt 5' phosphorylated double strand breaks in genomic DNA. The results in agarose gel electrophoresis showed no significant DNA fragmentation and no dose-dependent response to $H_2O_2$. However, the remarkable difference in shape and position was observed in melting curve of LM-qPCR. This result supported that the melting curve analysis of LM-qPCR presented here, could be more sensitive and accurate than previous DNA fragmentation assay method.
In this study, the efficient large-scale synthetic route for itraconazole, triazole antifungal agent, was developed. The original synthetic route for medicinal chemistry reported by Janssen Pharmaceutica was linear (14 linear steps) starting from 2,4-dichloroacetophenone with the total yield of 1.4%, and potential hazardous materials such as methanesulfonyl chloride ($CH_{3}SO_{2}Cl$), hydrogen gas, and sodium hydride (NaH) were used. Furthermore, the expensive 1-acetyl-4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)piperazine and palladium were used in this medicinal chemistry route, thus the manufacturing cost would be practically high. In order to improve the commercial route, we developed the process of 12 step convergent synthesis combining two intermediates which are roughly halves of itraconazole with the total yield of 12.0%, and hazardous materials and expensive reagents were excluded in this process, thus the manufacturing cost could be cut down to a great extent.

Copper is one of the most abundant metals on earth. Its oxide (CuO) is an intrinsically p-type metal-oxide semiconductor with a bandgap ($E_g$) of 1.2-2.0 eV 1. Copper oxide nanomaterials are considered as promising materials for a wide range of applications e.g., lithium ion batteries, dye-sensitized solar cells, photocatalytic hydrogen production, photodetectors, and biogas sensors 2-7. Recently, high-density and uniform CuO nanostructures have been grown on Cu foils in alkaline solutions 3. In 2011, T. Soejima et al. proposed a facile process for the oxidation synthesis of CuO nanobelt arrays using $NH_3-H_2O_2$ aqueous solution 8. In 2017, G. Kaur et al. synthesized CuO nanostructures by treating Cu foils in $NH_4OH$ at room temperature for different treatment times 9. The surface treatment of Cu in alkaline aqueous solutions is a potential method for the mass fabrication of CuO nanostructures with high uniformity and density. It is interesting to compare the gas sensing properties among CuO nanomaterials synthesized by this approach and by others. Nevertheless, none of above studies investigated the gas sensing properties of as-synthesized CuO nanomaterials. In this study, CuO nanowalls versus nanoparticles were synthesized via the oxidation process of Cu foil in NH4OH solution at $50-70^{\circ}C$. The gas sensing properties of the as-prepared CuO nanoplates were examined with $C_2H_5OH$, $CH_3COCH_3$, and $NH_3$ at $200-360^{\circ}C$.
The effect of a chemical pretreatment on the surface carbon was investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrochemical methods. Primitive carbon has a reducing power likely due to incompletely oxidized functional groups on the surface. We aim to control this reducing power by chemical treatment and apply for the spontaneous deposition of nanoparticles (NPs). Highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) was initially treated with a reducing agent, NaBH4 or an oxidizing agent, KMnO4, for 5 min. Subsequently, the pretreated carbon was immersed in a platinum (Pt) precursor. Unexpectedly, SEM images showed that the reducing agent increased spontaneous PtNPs deposition while the oxidizing agent decreased Pt loading more as compared to that of using bare carbon. However, the amount of Pt on the carbon obviously decreased by NaBH4 treatment for 50 min. Secondly, spontaneous reduction on pretreated glassy carbon (GC) was investigated using the catalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). GC electrode treated with NaBH4 for a short and long time showed small (onset potential: -640 mV vs. MSE) and large overpotential for the HER, respectively. Although the mechanism is unclear, the electrochemistry results correspond to the optical data. As a proof-of-concept, these results demonstrate that chemical treatments can be used to design the shapes and amounts of deposited catalytic metal on carbon by controlling the surface state.
The Langmuir adsorption isotherm at the $(Pt)/0.1M\;H_2SO_4$ electrolyte interface has been qualitatively analyzed using the ac impedance measurement and phase-shift method. The phase shift $(\phi)$ depends on both the cathode potential (E<0) and frequency (f) and is inversely proportional to the factional surface coverage $(\theta)$. At an intermediate frequency band (ca. $1\~100$ Hz), the phase-shift profile $(\phi\;vs.\;E)$ can be related to the fractional surface coverage $(\theta\;vs.\;E)$. The phase-shift profile $(\phi\;vs.\;E)$ can be used as an experimental method to estimate and analyze the Langmuir adsorption isotherm $(\theta\;vs.\;E)$. The equilibrium constant (K) and the standard free energy $({\Delta}G_{ads})$ of the adsorbed hydrogen atom $(H_{ads})\;and\;3\times10^{-4}$ and 20.1 kJ/mol, respectively.
