  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of heat treatment on the start-up performance for anaerobic hydrogen fermentation of food waste. The result showed that hydrogen production was $0.61{\pm}0.31$ mol $H_2$/mol hexose with heat-treatment of food waste at $70^{\circ}C$ for 60 min whereas it was $0.36{\pm}0.31$ mol $H_2$/mol hexose without heat-treatment of one. The heat treatment of food waste enhanced hydrogen yield due probably to the increase of hydrolysis as well as the decrease of non-hydrogen fermentation microorganisms. The removal efficiency of carbohydrate in reactors regardless of heat treatment of food waste maintained over 90%. The hydrogen conversion efficiency from food waste was 1.7-6.3% with heat-treatment whereas it was 0.7-4.5% without heat-treatment. At the time of switchover from batch to continuous operation, lactate concentration was high compared to the n-butyrate concentration in anaerobic hydrogen fermentation reactor without heat-treatment. Anaerobic hydrogen fermentation of food waste with heat treatment was stable in start-up periods because lactate concentration could be maintained at a relatively low compared to n-butyrate concentration due to the decrease of non-hydrogen fermentation microorganisms.

  • Hydride-dehydride process for efficient recycling of tantalum (Ta) is used for manufacturer of Ta powder. In case of metal powder, Impurities as like nitride, oxygen, hydrogen is decreased of physical properties. For manufacture of Ta powder, control of theses impurities is important. In this study, to decreased of impurities on Ta powder using HDH process optimize dehydride condition. Dehydration behavior of Ta is depended on temperature, time, and atmosphere. Phase transition of Ta hydride is analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Concentration of hydrogen is decreased with temperature increased. At high temperature, concentration of hydrogen in Ta is similar according to time increased. Size and morphology of powder is not observed after dehydride. Ta powder, which is less than 20 um, concentration of hydrogen under 800 ppm is obtain.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the degradation and mineralization of PPCPs (Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products) using a CBD(Collimated Beam Device) of UV/H2O2 advanced oxidation process. The decomposition rate of each substance was regarded as the first reaction rate to the ultraviolet irradiation dose. The decomposition rate constants for PPCPs were determined by the concentration of hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet irradiation intensity. If the decomposition rate constant is large, the PPCPs concentration decreases rapidly. According to the decomposition rate constant, chlortetracycline and sulfamethoxazole are expected to be sufficiently removed by UV irradiation only without the addition of hydrogen peroxide. In the case of carbamazepine, however, very high UV dose was required in the absence of hydrogen peroxide. Other PPCPs required an appropriate concentration of hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet irradiation intensity. The UV dose required to remove 90% of each PPCPs using the degradation rate constant can be calculated according to the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in each sample. Using this reaction rate, the optimum UV dose and hydrogen peroxide concentration for achieving the target removal rate can be obtained by the target PPCPs and water properties. It can be a necessary data to establish design and operating conditions such as UV lamp type, quantity and hydrogen peroxide concentration depending on the residence time for the most economical operation.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine non-destructively the hydrogen peroxide concentration of 3% antiseptic hydrogen peroxide solutions by portable near-infrared (NIR) system. Hydrogen peroxide standards were prepared ranging from 0 to 25.6 w/w% and the NIR spectra of hydrogen peroxide standard solutions were collected by using a quartz cell in 1 mm pathlength. We found the variation of absorbance band due to OH vibration of hydrogen peroxide depending on the concentration around 1400 nm in the second derivatives spectra. Partial least square regression (PLSR) and multilinear regression (MLR) were explored to develop a calibration model over the spectral range 1100-1720 nm. The model using PLSR was better than that using MLR. The calibration showed good results with a standard error of prediction (SEP) of 0.16%. In order to validate the developed calibration model, routine analyses were performed using commercial antiseptic hydrogen peroxide solutions. The hydrogen peroxide values from the NIR calibration model were compared with the values from a redox titration method. The NIR routine analyses results showed good correlation with those of the redox titration method. This study showed that the rapid and non-destructive determination of hydrogen peroxide in the antiseptic solution was successfully performed by portable NIR system without very harmful solvents.

  • Hydrogen gas sensors were fabricated after the form of metal/insulator/semiconductor(MIS) structure on a p-type silicon wafer and a insulating layer (silicon dioxide) thickness was changed from $500{\AA}$ to $5000{\AA}$. Their electrical properties were investigated with the variation of the hydrogen gas concentration at room temperature. At the applied forward bias of lV to both ends of Pd-MIS sensors the current was decreased logarithmically with the increase of hydrogen concentration in air. In the case of a thin $SiO_2$ layered ($500{\AA}$) sensor the current ratio was decreased to 25 % at 1 % of hydrogen concentration in air and 50% for a thick $SiO_2$ layered ($5000{\AA}$) sensor. And the response time of the thick insulating layered sensor to 1% hydrogen containing air was about 50 seconds and regeneration time was 2.5 minutes. When a 0.5mA current was appied to the thick insulating layered sensor the maximun voltage shift was calculated to 0.8V in the case of ${\theta}$ = 1 and the Pd surface coverage of hydrogen was increased logarithmically with hydrogen partial pressure.

  • This study examined the effect of input substrate concentration on hydrogen production of microbial electrolysis cells. To compare the performance of MEC according to the input substrate concentration, six laboratory-scale MEC reactors were operated by sequentially increasing the input substrate concentration from 2 g/L of sodium acetate, to 4 g/L, and 6 g/L. The current density, hydrogen production, and SCOD removal rate were analyzed, and energy efficiency and cathodic hydrogen recovery were calculated to compare the performance of MEC. The maximum volumetric current density was obtained at 4 g/L condition (76.3 A/m3) and it decreased to 19.0 A/m3, when the input concentration was increased to 6 g/L, which was a 75% decrease compared to the 4 g/L input condition. Maximum hydrogen production was obtained also at 4 g/L condition (47.3 ± 16.8 mL), but maximum hydrogen yield was obtained at 2 g/L input condition (1.1 L H2/g CODin). Energy efficiencies were also highest in 2 g/L condition; the lowest result was observed at 6 g/L condition. Maximum electrical energy efficiency was 76.4%, and the maximum overall energy efficiency was 39.7% at 2 g/L condition. However, when the substrate concentration increased to 6 g/L, the performance was drastically decreased. Cathodic hydrogen recovery also showed a similar tendency with energy efficiency, with the lowest concentration condition showing the best performance. It can be concluded that operating at low input substrate concentration might be better when considering not only hydrogen yield but also energy efficiency.

  • Additives such as glycerol, methanol, acetone, and ethanol were used to prevent $NaBO_2$ from precipitation, and their effects on hydrogen generation properties of $NaBH_4$ hydrolysis were investigated. When the concentration of additives was 5 wt%, the additives such as methanol, acetone, and ethanol could not prevent $NaBO_2$ precipitation. Although glycerol prevented $NaBO_2$ precipitation, conversion efficiency decreased to 78.0% due to its viscosity. Based on test results, hydrogen generation tests were also performed at various concentration of glycerol and methanol to investigate the concentration effects on hydrogen generation properties. As the concentration of glycerol increased from 1 wt% to 3 wt%, conversion efficiency increased owing to additive effect. When its concentration increased to 5 wt%, conversion efficiency decreased due to its viscosity. As the concentration of methanol increased from 5 wt% to 10 wt%, conversion efficiency increased owing to additive effect. When its concentration increased to 15 wt%, conversion efficiency decreased due to $NaB(OCH_3)_4$ precipitate. Although conversion efficiency decreased about 1% when 3 wt% glycerol was added, $NaBO_2$ precipitation was prevented. Consequently, addition of 3 wt% glycerol to $NaBH_4$ solution improves stability of hydrogen generation system.

  • Previous studies have reported on the mechanical robustness and chemical stability of flexible amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) on plastic substrates both in flat and curved states. In this study, we investigate how the polyimide (PI) substrate affects hydrogen concentration in the a-IGZO layer, which subsequently influences the device performance and stability under bias-temperature-stress. Hydrogen increases the carrier concentration in the active layer, but it also electrically deactivates intrinsic defects depending on its concentration. The influence of hydrogen varies between the TFTs fabricated on a glass substrate to those on a PI substrate. Hydrogen concentration is 5% lower in devices on a PI substrate after annealing, which increases the hysteresis characteristics from 0.22 to 0.55 V and also the threshold voltage shift under positive bias temperature stress by 2 ${\times}$ compared to the devices on a glass substrate. Hence, the analysis and control of hydrogen flux is crucial to maintaining good device performance and stability of a-IGZO TFTs.

  • In the present study, a numerical simulation for the diffusion of hydrogen leakage of FCV(Fuel Cell Vehicle) in a tunnel was performed to aid the assessment of risk in case of leakage accident. The temporal and spatial distributions of the hydrogen concentration around FCV are predicted from the present numerical analyses. Flammable region of 4-74% and explosive region of 18-59% hydrogen by volume was identified from the present results. Factors influencing the diffusion of the hydrogen jet were examined to evaluate the effectiveness of tunnel ventilation system for relieving the accumulation of the leaked hydrogen gas. The distribution of the concentration of the leaked hydrogen for various cases can be used as a database in various applications for the hydrogen safety.
