This study addresses a microfluidic method to uniformly form diacetylene (DA) liposomes and control their size. DA liposomes are biochemical sensor materials with a unique property such that when they are polymerized to polydiacetylene (PDA) they exhibit non-fluorescent blue to fluorescent red phase transition upon chemical or thermal stress. The liposome size and distribution are important because they significantly affect the phase transition. So far, DA Liposomes, have been prepared by mixing of bulk phases leading to heterogeneous, polydisperse distribution in size. Therefore, additional post-processes are required such as sonication or membrane extrusion to obtain an appropriate size of liposomes. Here, we report a novel strategy using a microfluidic chip and hydrodynamic focusing to form DA liposomes and control their size. Preliminary results obtained by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) show that the microfluidic strategy generates more monodispersed liposomes than a bulk method.
Multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are widely used to simulate the physical and biogeochemical processes in the surface water systems such as reservoirs and estuaries. Most of the models have adopted the Eulerian grid modeling framework, mainly because it can reasonably simulate physical dynamics and chemical species concentrations throughout the entire model domain. Determining the optimum grid cell size is important when using the Eulerian grid-based three-dimensional water quality models because the characteristics of species are assumed uniform in each of the grid cells and chemical species are represented by concentration (mass per volume). The objective of this study was to examine the effect of grid-size of a three dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (EFDC) on hydrodynamics and mass transport in the Saemangeum Reservoir. Three grid resolutions, respectively representing coarse (CG), medium (MG), and fine (FG) grid cell sizes, were used for a sensitivity analysis. The simulation results of numerical tracer showed that the grid resolution affects on the flow path, mass transport, and mixing zone of upstream inflow, and results in a bias of temporal and spatial distribution of the tracer. With the CG, in particular, the model overestimates diffusion in the mixing zone, and fails to identify the gradient of concentrations between the inflow and the ambient water.
The dark matter (DM) only simulations have been exploited to study e.g. the large scale structures and properties of a halo. In a baryon side, the high-resolution hydrodynamic simulation such as IllustrisTNG has helped extend the physics of gas along with stars and DM. However, the expansive computational cost of hydrodynamic simulations limits the size of a simulated universe whereas DM-only simulations can generate the universe of the cosmological horizon size approximately. I will introduce a pipeline to estimate baryonic properties of a galaxy inside a dark matter (DM) halo in DM-only simulations using a machine trained on high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations. An extremely randomized tree (ERT) algorithm is used together with multiple novel improvements such as a refined error function in machine training and two-stage learning. By applying our machine to the DM-only simulation of a large volume, I then validate the pipeline that rapidly generates a galaxy catalog from a DM halo catalog using the correlations the machine found in hydrodynamic simulations. I will discuss the benefits that machine-based approaches like this entail, as well as suggestions to raise the scientific potential of such approaches.
While upwelling regions account for only 0.1% of the ocean surface, they yield over 40% of world's fish catch. Thus it is vary important making upwelling region by various methods. This study was performed to find out basic hydrodynamic characteristics (function, stability..,) of artificial upwelling structures. The hydrodynamic characteristics of artificial upwelling structures can be summarized as follows: 1) The falling velocity of blocks was effected size($l_B$) of blocks than incident current velocity( $V_0$). 2) The falling horizontal distance was reduced as induce of stratification parameters and block' size. 3) Generation of artificial upwelling current was effected by size of structures and incident current. When stratification parameters was about 3.0 and relative height(hs/h) of structures was about $0.125{\sim}0.15$, stable artificial upwelling current was generated in the back-side of structures.
The expansion of two different kinds of hydrodynamic size of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA Mw: 1.56- 2.04 ${\times}$ 106 g/mol) has been measured by dynamic light scattering and viscometry above the Flory $\theta$ temperature of the variou s solvents such as n-butyl chloride, 3-heptanone, and 4-heptanone. The expansion of PMMA chains was analyzed in terms of universal temperature parameters and also compared with previous results of polystyrene (PS) system. First it was found that simple $\tau/{\tau}c$ parameter no longer had its universality for the expansion behavior of hydrodynamic size in the chemically different linear polymer chains. However after modifying ${\tau}/{\tau}c$ parameter into $(Mw/Ro2)3}2(\tau/\tauc)$, we observed a much better universality for both PMMA and PS systems. Here Mw, Ro, $\tau[=(T-{\theta}$)/${\theta}$]$, and ${\tau}c[=({\theta}-Tc)/Tc]$ are defined as the weight average molecular weight, the unperturbed end-to-end distance, the reduced temperature and the reduced critical temperature, respectively.
Appropriate removal of pollutants from combined sewer overflows(CSOs) and stormwater runoff is of primary concern to watershed managers trying to meet water quality standards even under a wet weather condition. Harmful substances associated with particles besides TSS and BOD are subjected to removal prior to discharge into the natural waters. Effectiveness of five major hydrodynamic separation technologies, Vortechs, Downstream Defender including Storm King for CSOs control, CDS, Stormceptor, and IHS, were evaluated in this study. There is not sufficient information for accurate evaluation of the removal efficiency for the pollutants from the stormwater runoff and CSOs. Based upon limited engineering data, however, all technologies were found to be effective in separation of heavy particles and floating solids. Technologies utilizing screens seem to have advantage in the treatment capacity than the other technologies relied fully on hydrodynamic behavior. The IHS system seems to have a strong potential in application for control of CSOs because of unique hydrodynamic behavior as well as a flexibility in opening size of the screens. Size of the particulate matter in the CSOs and stormwater runoff is found to be the most important parameter in selection of the type of the hydrodynamic separators. There exists an upper limit in the solids removal efficiency of a hydrodynamic separator, which is strongly dependent upon the particle size distribution of the CSOs and stormwater runoff.
Ultrafine particles have been used widely in many high technology industrial areas. The spherical nonagglomerated and uniform nanometer-size $SiO_2$ particles are synthesized by the direct injection of TEOS(Tetraethyorthosilicate) using electro-hydrodynamic spray ins method. Electro-hydrodynamic spray can generate in the range of submicron-size TEOS particles with high electric charge by applying a high electric field between the liquid injection nozzle and the reaction tube. This TEOS particles are thermally decomposed or oxidized to produce nanometresized $SiO_2$ particles in the reaction tube. Spherical, nonagglomerated and ultrafine particle generated and examined at furnaced temperature, $800^{\circ}C$ and TEOS flowrate of 0.49 or $1.00cm^3/hr$ using SEM and SMPS. As the total gas flowrate changes from 1.51pm to 5.01pm, the mean diameter of $SiO_2$ particle decreases from 120 nm to 68nm.

This study deals with the experimental and numerical investigations to design the high performance otter board. Experiment was carried out to determine the most effective slot size of single-slot cambered otter board in the circulation water channel of BAEK KYUNG IND. Co. LTD. Numerical analysis was done by the commercial CFD code, FLUENT, to provide some valuable physical interpretations and finally to design the otter board section by numerical method. The major results are as follows ; 1. In experiment, the maximum lift and drag coefficients of simple cambered type otterboard were 1.41, 0.55, respectively, at the angle of attack $28^\circ$, while those of slot one with slot size 0.02C (C denotes the chord length) were 1.72, 0.42 at the angle of attack $24^\circ$. 2. The hydrodynamic characteristics depending upon slot size shows the greatest at 0.02C of the slot size. 3. Numerical results well visualized the streamlines, pressure fields, and speed vectors of a simple cambered and slot cambered otter board with slot size 0.02C. The slot cambered one with slot size 0.02C was shown that pressure field was distributed moderately on front and back side of otter board. And, the delay and decrease of separation were favorably achieved by flow through slot. 4. Computed result on the pattern of hydrodynamic field and the values of $C_L$ and $C_D$ by the commercial CFD code, FLUENT, show almost the same as those of the experimental result.
Most hard disk spindles currently used are supported by oil lubricated hydrodynamic bearings. However, in the trend of increasing spindle speed and reducing size and cost, dynamic behaviors of the bearing such as RRO and NRRO are more important. A novel system evaluating dynamic behavior of hydrodynamic bearings in had disk drive was developed to analyze the effect of groove shapes and parameters.
