  • In this paper, a comparative study on the radiation techniques for the motion analysis of the three dimensional floating structure with the forward speed was carried out. The Sommerfeld radiation condition, the damping technique, and the point shift technique were used for the comparative study. Radiated wave patterns and hydrodynamic coefficients of the heave motion of floating structure with the forward speed were compared and analyzed. The characteristics and limitations of each radiation technique were analyzed through the calculation results. To overcome the limitations of conventional radiation techniques, the hybrid radiation technique combining the Sommerfeld radiation condition with the damping technique was proposed. It is confirmed that the proposed method, the Hybrid radiation technique, improves the limitation of the speed range and the dissipation of the wave of the conventional radiation technique. The motion analysis code of the three dimensional floating structure with the forward speed based on the Rankine source method with hybrid radiation technique was developed. In order to validate the developed code, hydrodynamic analyses were carried and compared with published experiments.

  • We in the Korea Institute for Advanced Study are preparing the fifth Horizon Run in a series of large-scale cosmological simulations. For the first time we will include full hydrodynamics and astrophysical processes using a RAMSES code. I will discuss the impact of large-scale structures on smaller scale properties in cosmological hydrodynamic simulation to justify our choice of simulation boxsize, whose one side length is up to 1 Gpc.

  • structure of matters of Lambda cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology on detailed numerical simulations. To accomplish our research goal, we have added the following baryonic physics on the existing cosmological hydrodynamic code, Gadget-2: 1) radiative heating and cooling, 2) reionization of the Universe and UV shielding, 3) star formation, 4) energy and metallicity feedback by supernova. In addition, we included cluster formation to distinguish clustered star formation inside the very high density gas clumps from the field star formation. Our simulations cover a cubic box of a side length 4Mpc/h with 130 million particles. The mass of each particles is $3.4{\times}104Msun$, thus the GCs can be resolved with more than hundreds particles. We discuss various properties of the GCs such as mass function, specific frequency, baryon-to-dark matter ratio, metallicity, spatial distribution, and orbit eccentricity distribution as functions of redshift. We also discuss how the formation and evolution of the GCs are affected by UV shielding.

  • This paper is concerned about the hydrodynamic coefficients of hydrofoil. We discretized the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with second order Runge-kutta for the time in the second order compact scheme for the spatial. The three-dimensional CFD code based on hybrid mesh on the finite volume method is used to simulate flow around NACA series foils. Lift and drag coefficient is calculated for several NACA series foils using different mesh types. Our aim is to obtain the lift and drag coefficient to evaluate the robustness of the solver and to shaw the advantage of using trim tab at the trailing edge. It concludes with a discussion of results and recommendations for future work.

  • This paper presents the steady-state performance analysis of the first stage of a multistage centrifugal pump, composed of a shrouded-impeller, a vaned-diffuser and a return-channel, using the commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, ANSYS CFX. The detailed flow fields in the vaned-diffuser with outlet in its side wall and the return-channel are investigated by the CFD code adopted in the present study. The effect of the vaned-diffuser with a downstream crossover bend and the corresponding return-channel on the overall hydrodynamic performance of the first stage pump has also been demonstrated over the normal operating conditions. The predicted hydrodynamics for the diffusing components herein could provide useful information to match the inlet blade angle of the next stage impeller for improving the multistage pump performances.

  • The finite volume based multi-block RANS code, WAVIS developed at KRISO, is used to simulate the turbulent flows around a submarine with the realizable $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ turbulence model. RANS methods are verified and validated at the level of validation uncertainty 1.54% of the stagnation pressure coefficient for the solution of the turbulent flows around SUBOFF submarine model without appendages. Another SUBOFF configuration, axisymmetric body with four identical stem appendages, is also computed and validated with the experimental data of the nominal wake and hydrodynamic coefficients. The hydrodynamic forces and moments for SUBOFF model and a practical submarine are predicted at several drift and pitch angles. The computed results are in extremely good agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that all the computations at the present study were carried out in a PC and the CPU time required for 2.8 million grids was about 20 hours to get fully converged solution. The current study shows that CFD can be a very useful and cost effective tool for the prediction of the hydrodynamic performance of a submarine in the basic design stage.

  • We develop a parallel cosmological hydrodynamic simulation code designed for the study of formation and evolution of cosmological structures. The gravitational force is calculated using the TreePM method and the hydrodynamics is implemented based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics. The initial displacement and velocity of simulation particles are calculated according to second-order Lagrangian perturbation theory using the power spectra of dark matter and baryonic matter. The initial background temperature is given by Recfast and the temperature uctuations at the initial particle position are assigned according to the adiabatic model. We use a time-limiter scheme over the individual time steps to capture shock-fronts and to ease the time-step tension between the shock and preshock particles. We also include the astrophysical gas processes of radiative heating/cooling, star formation, metal enrichment, and supernova feedback. We test the code in several standard cases such as one-dimensional Riemann problems, Kelvin-Helmholtz, and Sedov blast wave instability. Star formation on the galactic disk is investigated to check whether the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation is properly recovered. We also study global star formation history at different simulation resolutions and compare them with observations.

  • The course stability performance for tankers is evaluated by computational fluid dynamics. In the present work, a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code is applied to a maneuvering problem covering the pure drift and yaw motions. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the hydrodynamic force in the bare hull (AFRAMAX) in pure drift and yaw motion and to provide information about the trends in the forces and moments when the rudder angles are varied. The flow simulation is performed by FLUENT. The CFD code is examined to find the optimistic computational condition such as size of grid, turbulence model and initial condition. The hydrodynamic derivatives in drift and pure yaw motion are estimated by the numerical simulation, and then the stability levers are calculated. It is confirmed that the computations show the superiority and inferiority of course stability performance according to the hull forms. Finally, the CFD code is applied to the estimation of the rudder forces when the rudder angles are varied. The propeller effect expressed by the body force distribution is also included.
