  • In this study the hot water extract was prepared from Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides (Araliaceae) leaves and stems to study antioxidant activities and lipoxygenase inhibition. The extract showed the protective hydroxyl radical (-OH) which can damage virtually all types of macromolecules: carbohydrates, nucleic acids (mutations), lipids (lipid peroxidation), and amino acids. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of H. sibthorpioides was 78.6%. The extract showed strong activity against 1, 1- diphenyl 2-picrylhyorazyl (DPPH) which is a well-known radical and a trap (scavenger) for other radicals. DPPH scavenging activity of leaves of H. sibthorpioides was evaluated at 8.0 mg/ml was 86.0%. Lipoxygenases (LOXs) constitute a heterogeneous family of lipid peroxidizing enzymes capable of oxygenating polyunsaturated fatty acids to their corresponding hydroperoxy derivatives. The inhibitory effect of 15-LOX by H. sibthorpioides was assayed using a Morgan microplate assay. The extract of H. sibthorpioides was 55.5% inhibitory effects on the inhibition of LOX at 8.0 mg/ml. The IC50 values for OH activity, DPPH activity, and LOX inhibition from leaves 5.23 mg/ml, 6.44 mg/ml, and 3.71 mg/ml, respectively. Antioxidative activity assay showed that the water extracts from leaf and stem had a strong reducing power. These results show that H. sibthorpioides has some phytochemical constituents which may be active against the free radicals (OH and DPPH) and lipoxygenase enzyme.

  • Phylogenetic analyses were conducted to evaluate relationships of 5 taxa of Korean Hydrocotyle, H. spp. found in the Ulleung island including one outgroup (Centella asiatica). The molecular phylogenetic methods based on nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS region and cpDNA trnH-psbA region. Centella asiatica was used outgroup for analysis. As the result, genus Korean Hydrocotyle were grouped by 94% bootstrap value. Korean Hydrocotyle was grouped by four clades; Clade I-H. maritima, H. sibthorpides and H. yabei clade Clade II-H. nepalensis clade clade III-H. ramiflora clade clade IV-H. spp. clade. H. maritima, H. sibthorpides and H. yabei was not distinguished, seperately. H. spp. was distinctly distinguished other Korean Hydrocotyle.

  • Hydrocotyle is a genus of prostrate, perennial aquatic or semi-aquatic plants formerly classified in the family Apiaceae, now in the family Araliaceae. Lipoxygenases (LOX) are present in the human body and play an important role in the stimulation of inflammatory reactions. Ethanolic extracts of five Hydrocotyle species (H. ramiflora, H. maritima, H. nepalensis, H. sibthorpioides, and H. yabei) showed inhibition of 23.5~50.6% at 2.0 mg/mL. Their extracts showed LOX inhibition in half maximal effective concentration (EC50) range 15.1~15.7 ㎍/mL. Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan, a major component of the extracellular matrix Five extracts of these species inhibited less than 23.0% of Hyaluronidase (HAase) activity at a concentration of 2.0 mg/mL Xanthine oxidase (XO) is a form of xanthine oxidoreductase, a type of enzyme that generates reactive oxygen species. Five Hydrocotyle species were found to have inhibitory activity of XO at 2.0 mg/ml, with 65% having greater than 50% inhibition. H. ramiflora exhibited the highest activity with an inhibition of 80.0%. The results suggested that Lipoxygenases, Hyaluronidase, and Busan 47340, Republic of Korea from five Hydrocotyle species might be multifunctional and prevent the degradation of allergic reactions and inflammation.

  • About 154 weed species composed of 31 annuals, 33 biennials, and 90 perennials belonging to 38 families were identified from golf courses in Dongrae, Joongmoon and Ora country clubs on June and September, 1992. Compositae was the most widely occurring family covering 30 species, followed by 28 species in Graminae, 12 species in Leguminasae and Rosaceae, respectively, and 7 species in Caryopbyllacese etc. The bighest number of weed species occurred in the out of bounds in three golf courses, The dominant weed species based on importance value and frequency were Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides, Poa annua, Cyperus rotundus, Oxalis corniculata, Digitaria sanguinalis and Artemisia prinseps.

  • Literatures were reviewed to understand the weeds occurring on the lawn and the effective control methods of them. Thirty-seven species of 16 families including three species of Cyperaceae for example Cyperus sanguinolentus, nine species of Poaceae including Digitalis ciliaris, Poa repens, etc., and 25 species of broad-leaved weeds such as Artemisia princeps, Draba nemorosa, Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides were occurred on the lawns. One hundred ninety-six weed species of 53 families were occurred on a tomb graveyard adjacent to the mountain. Therefore, it is possible to be infested by the weeds occurring on the graveyard on the golf course adjacent to the mountains. There are 67 items, 32 kinds of the soil treatment herbicides including dichlobenil GR, methiozolin EC, oxaziclomefone SC, imaxaquin GR et al, and 35 kinds of the foliar treatment herbicides including metamifop EC, bifenox flucetosulfuron WG, flazasulfuron WP, trifloxysulfuron-sodium WG et al. registered at the end of May 2012 for efficient management of the weeds occurring on the lawn. For effective management of the weeds, the herbicide can be generally applied twice a year on March to April and August to September for soil treatment and once a year on June to July for the foliage treatment.
