This study is performed for the development of a field monitoring and test technique both of self-weight and hydraulic consolidation by which the soil parameters of dredge-reclaimed clay can be obtained effectively. The field monitoring development and tests mentioned above make it possible to reproduce the process of the self-weight consolidation from settling to reclaimed soft ground. The experimental research is mainly focussed on the characteristics of self-weight consolidation of dredged clayey soil. And theoretical study has pointed out the limits in the application of Terzaghi's one dimensional consolidation theory in interpreting reclaimed clayey ground. Furthermore, a finite difference analysis has been made on the basis of Mikasa s self-weight consolidation theory which takes the problems of Terzaghi's theory into consideration. The relationships between specific volume, effective stress, and the coefficient of permeability of Kunsan reclaimed clayey soil have been obtained by laboratory tests. On the other hand, through the field monitoring, pore pressure, total pressure, and water levels have been measured after pouring. The results of these experiments have been analyzed, and compared with those from Terzaghi's method and the finite difference analysis of Mikasa's self-weight consolidation theory. In conclusion, the measured settlements is comparatively consistent with Mikasa's self-weight consolidation theory rather than Terzaghi's consolidation theory.
An electro hydraulic poppet valve (EHPV) and a variable orifice poppet are assembled in a single block, which is referred to as a RHINO but is also generally called a pilot-operated flow control valve. In this study, we analyzed the structure and the operating principle for a RHINO applied in a 21-ton electric excavator system. The RHINO was experimentally tested to measure the dynamic responses and the pressure energy loss. In this test, we investigated the variation in the conductance coefficient according to the increase in the supply pressure under a constant current and a variation in the flow rate according to the increase in the current. Then, the geometrical shapes and the spring stiffness of the RHINO were considered to develop an analysis model. The characteristics (current-force and hysteresis) for the solenoid based on the experimental data were reflected in the analysis model that was developed, and the reliability of the analysis model was also verified by comparing the experimental and analytical results. The developed model is thus considered to be reliable for use in a wide range of applications, including optimum design, sensitivity analysis, parameter tuning, etc.
Nuclear accidents such as Fukushima Daiichi have highlighted the potential of passive safety systems to replace or complement active safety systems as part of the overall prevention and/or mitigation strategies. In addition, passive systems are key features of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), for which they are becoming almost unavoidable and are part of the basic design of many reactors available in today's nuclear market. Nevertheless, their potential to significantly increase the safety of nuclear power plants still needs to be strengthened, in particular the ability of computer codes to determine their performance and reliability in industrial applications and support the safety demonstration. The PASTELS project (September 2020-February 2024), funded by the European Commission "Euratom H2020" programme, is devoted to the study of passive systems relying on natural circulation. The project focuses on two types, namely the SAfety COndenser (SACO) for the evacuation of the core residual power and the Containment Wall Condenser (CWC) for the reduction of heat and pressure in the containment vessel in case of accident. A specific design for each of these systems is being investigated in the project. Firstly, a straight vertical pool type of SACO has been implemented on the Framatome's PKL loop at Erlangen. It represents a tube bundle type heat exchanger that transfers heat from the secondary circuit to the water pool in which it is immersed by condensing the vapour generated in the steam generator. Secondly, the project relies on the CWC installed on the PASI test loop at LUT University in Finland. This facility reproduces the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of a Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) mainly composed of a CWC, a heat exchanger in the containment vessel connected to a water tank at atmospheric pressure outside the vessel which represents the ultimate heat sink. Several activities are carried out within the framework of the project. Different tests are conducted on these integral test facilities to produce new and relevant experimental data allowing to better characterize the physical behaviours and the performances of these systems for various thermo-hydraulic conditions. These test programmes are simulated by different codes acting at different scales, mainly system and CFD codes. New "system/CFD" coupling approaches are also considered to evaluate their potential to benefit both from the accuracy of CFD in regions where local 3D effects are dominant and system codes whose computational speed, robustness and general level of physical validation are particularly appreciated in industrial studies. In parallel, the project includes the study of single and two-phase natural circulation loops through a bibliographical study and the simulations of the PERSEO and HERO-2 experimental facilities. After a synthetic presentation of the project and its objectives, this article provides the reader with findings related to the physical analysis of the test results obtained on the PKL and PASI installations as well an overall evaluation of the capability of the different numerical tools to simulate passive systems.

An experimental study was carried out to measure frictional pressure drop in flow boiling to deionized water in a microchannel having a hydraulic diameter of $500{\mu}m$. Tests were performed in the ranges of heat fluxes from 100 to $400kW/m^2$, vapor qualities from 0 to 0.2 and mass fluxes of 200, 400 and $600kg/m^2s$. The frictional pressure drop during flow boiling is predicted by using two models; the homogeneous model that assumes equal phase velocity and the separate flow model that allows a slip velocity between two phases. From the experimental results, it is found that the two phase multiplier decreases with an increase in mass flux. Measured data of pressure drop are compared to a few available correlations proposed for macroscale and mini/microscale. The homogeneous model well predicted frictional pressure drop within MAE of 29.4 % for the test conditions considered in this work.
Calcareous soil is originated from marine biogenic sediments and weathering of carbonate rocks. The formation history for calcareous sediment includes complex physical, biological and chemical processes. It is preferably selected as the major fill materials for hydraulic reclamation and artificial island construction. Calcareous sands possess inter pores and complex shape are liable to be damaged at normal working stress level due to its fragile nature. Thus, the engineering properties of calcareous soil are greatly affected by its high compressibility and crushability. A series of triaxial shear tests were performed on calcareous sands derived from South China Sea under different test conditions. The effects of confining pressure, particle size, grading, compactness, drainage condition, and water content on the total amount of particle breakage for calcareous soil were symmetrically investigated. The test results showed that the crushing extent of calcareous sand with full gradation was smaller than that a single particle group under the same test condition. Large grains are cushioned by surrounding small particles and such micro-structure reduces the probability of breakage for well-graded sands. The increasing tendency of particle crushing for calcareous sand with a rise in confining pressure and compactness is confirmed. It is also evident that a rise in water content enhances the amount of particle breakage for calcareous sand. However, varying tendency of particle breakage with grain size is still controversial and requires further examination.
Side friction is often neglected in the analysis of the results of a consolidation test when the specimen has a high ratio of diameter to height. As the height of a specimen increases, however, side friction becomes important. This paper presents an investigation of the effect of side friction on consolidation test results for normally consolidated kaolinite slurry. Consolidation tests were performed to obtain settlement, pore pressure, compressibility, and hydraulic conductivity of kaolinite slurry. The compressibility relationship is corrected for side friction using a modified form of Taylor (1942) analytical solution. Numerical simulations using the CS2 piecewise-linear model are compared with settlement and excess pore pressure measurements. Experimental results show improved agreement with a modified CS2 model in which the effect of side friction is considered. The numerical and experimental results indicate that the side friction is an important factor affecting the rate of consolidation as well as the compressibility relationship for the specimen.

SMART100 has a containment pressure and radioactivity suppression system (CPRSS) for passive containment cooling system (PCCS). This prevents overheating and over-pressurization of a containment through direct contact condensation in an in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST) and wall condensation in a CPRSS heat exchanger (CHX) in an emergency cool-down tank (ECT). The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) constructed scaled-down test facilities, SISTA1 and SISTA2, for the thermal-hydraulic validation of the SMART100 CPRSS. Three separate effect tests were performed using SISTA1 to confirm the heat removal characteristics of SMART100 CPRSS. When the low mass flux steam with or without non-condensable gas is released into an IRWST, the conditions for mitigation of the chugging phenomenon were identified, and the physical variables were quantified by the 3D reconstruction method. The local behavior of the non-condensable gas was measured after condensation inside heat exchanger using a traverse system. Stratification of non-condensable gas occurred in large tank of the natural circulation loop. SISTA2 was used to simulate a small break loss-of-coolant accident (SBLCOA) transient. Since the test apparatus was a metal tank, compensations of initial heat transfer to the material and effect of heat loss during long-term operation were important for simulating cooling performance of SMART100 CPRSS. The pressure of SMART100 CPRSS was maintained below the design limit for 3 days even under sufficiently conservative conditions of an SBLOCA transient.
The first-ever integral effect test for simulating a guillotine break of a DVI (Direct Vessel Injection) line of the APR1400 was carried out with the ATLAS (Advanced Thermal-hydraulic Test Loop for Accident Simulation) from the same prototypic pressure and temperature conditions as those of the APR1400. The major thermal hydraulic behaviors during a DVI line break accident were identified and investigated experimentally. A method for estimating the break flow based on a balance between the change in RCS inventory and the injection flow is proposed to overcome a direct break low measurement deficiency. A post-test calculation was performed with a best-estimate safety analysis code MARS 3.1 to examine its prediction capability and to identify any code deficiencies for the thermal hydraulic phenomena occurring during the DVI line break accidents. On the whole, the prediction of the MARS code shows a good agreement with the measured data. However, the code predicted a higher core level than did the data just before a loop seal clearing occurs, leading to no increase in the peak cladding temperature. The code also produced a more rapid decrease in the downcomer water level than was predicted by the data. These observable disagreements are thought to be caused by uncertainties in predicting countercurrent flow or condensation phenomena in a downcomer region. The present integral effect test data will be used to support the present conservative safety analysis methodology and to develop a new best-estimate safety analysis methodology for DVI line break accidents of the APR1400.
To evaluate the smear zone caused by the drain installation, 10 piezometers were installed in the typical soft ground in the western coastal area of Korea. The dynamic pore water pressure developed during the drain installation was monitored using piezometers installed at a distance of 10cm, 20cm, 30cm, 40cm and 50cm from the location of the drain. The decay of pore pressure with time after pushing piezometers to depths of 5 meters and 7 meters during the drain installation was monitored to assess flow and consolidation characteristics of the soil after disturbance of the soil due to the drain installation. The drain installation results in shear strain and displacement of the soil and it decreases the permeability of the soil. Hence, the comparison between dissipation of the pore water pressure process in 10 pieszometers before as well as after installation of the drain indicated the diameter of disturbance zone and smear zone, which is related to the cross-sectional dimension of the mandrel. In addition, Cone-pressuremeter(CPM) tests were performed to obtain rigidity index of the soil for an interpretation of the dissipation processes. It has been evaluated by in-situ tests that the smear zone is from 3.0 to 3.6 times of the cross-sectional dimension of the mandrel. The hydraulic conductivity expressed in terms of the coefficient of consolidation after the drain installation was calculated from 3 to 8 times decrease evaluated by Teh & Houlsby equation and CPM test results.
The ram assembly is important equipment in fueling machine of PHWR(Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor) plant where fuel replacement is possible while the plant is in service. Troubles in the ram assembly can cause lots of difficulties in power plant operation. The ram assembly is typically composed of the B-ram, the L-Ram and the C-Ram. The B-ram is focused in this paper because it plays the most important role in the ram assembly. Among the ram fault phenomena, ram stuck phenomena are the most frequent cases in the B-ram, which has a ball screw mechanism driven by a hydraulic motor. Ram stuck phenomena are due to ball wear and damage in ball nut that increase in proportion to the number of fuel replacement. It is required to predict ram stuck phenomena before they occur. In this paper, a method is proposed for predicting ram stuck phenomena using a discrete wavelet transform. The discrete wavelet transform provides information on both the time and frequency characteristics of the input signals. The proposed method uses the frequency bandwidths of coefficients of discrete wavelet decompositions and detail coefficients of discrete wavelet transform to predict ram stuck phenomena. The signal used in this paper is a torque-related signal such as a hydraulic service outlet pressure signal in a hydraulic driving system or a current signal in a DC motor driving system. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is shown via experiment using ball nut characteristic test equipment that simulates ram stuck phenomena due to increased ball friction in ball nut.
