A hybrid turbulence model has developed by combining a sub-grid scale model using dynamic k equation in LES with k-𝜔 SST model of RANS equation. To ascertain potential applicability of the hybrid turbulence model, fully developed turbulent channel flows at Re𝜏=180 have been simulated of which computational domain has a top wall with coarse cells and a bottom wall with fine cells. The streamwise mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles showed a good agreement with DNS data when using the hybrid model rather than using a single model in k-𝜔 SST or dynamic k equation models. Computational simulations of turbulent flows around KVLCC2 with a pre-swirl duct have been mainly performed using the hybrid turbulence model. Compared to the results obtained from RANS simulation with k-𝜔 SST model as well as LES with dynamic k equation SGS model, turbulent wakes of the duct in the present simulation using the hybrid turbulence model were very similar to that of LES. Also, the resistances acting on hull, rudder and duct in hybrid turbulence model were similar to those in RANS simulation whereas the viscous forces acting on the hull in LES had a significant error due to coarse cells inappropriate to the sub-grid scale model.
The buoyancy-driven turbulent thermal convection is predicted using an anisotropic hybrid turbulence model, which is incorporated with a low Reynolds k-.epsilon. turbulence model and an anisotropic buoyant part of algebraic stress model(ASM). The numerical predictions are compared with the Davidson's model,(1) the full ASM and the experimental results of Cheesewright et al.(2) All the models are shown to predict good agreements with the experiments for the averaged turbulence quantities. It is found that the effect of an anisotropic part on the Reynolds stress and the turbulent heat fluxes is substantial. In this study, the present hybrid model gives a fairly reasonable prediction in terms of the computational accuracy, convergence and stability. The contribution of an anisotropic buoyant part to turbulent heat fluxes are also scrutinized over the range of Rayleigh numbers $(4.79{\times}10^{10}{\le}Ra{\le}7.46{\times}10^{10}).$
A channel flow with a high Reynolds number but coarse grids is numerically studied to investigate the prediction possibility of its turbulence which is three-dimensional and time-dependent. In the present paper, a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model, a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and a Navier-Stokes equation with no model are tested with a new approach of hybrid RANS/LES, which reduces to RANS model in the boundary layers and at separation, and to Smagorinsky-like LES downstream of separation, and then compared with each other. It is found that the simulations of hybrid RANS/LES method sustain turbulence like those of LES and with no model, and the results are stable and fairly accurate. This indicates strongly that gradual improvements could lead to a simple, stable, and accurate approach to predict turbulence phenomena of wall-bounded flow.
This paper investigated the influence of simple support girds on flow, irrespective of having mixing vanes, in a 1 × 3 array rod bundle by using CFD methodology and the most accurate turbulence model which could reflect the actual physics of the flow was determined. In this context, a CFD model was created simulating the experimental studies on a single-phase flow [1] and the results were compared with the experimental data. In the first part of the study, influence of mesh was examined. Tetra, hybrid and poly type meshes were analyzed and convergence study was carried out on each in order to determine the most appropriate type and density. k - ε Standard and RSM LPS turbulence models were used in this section. In the second part of the study, the most appropriate turbulence model that could reflect the physics of the actual flow was investigated. RANS based turbulence models were examined using the mesh that was determined in the first part. Velocity and turbulence intensity results obtained on the upstream and downstream of the spacer grid at -3dh, +3dh and +40dh locations were compared with the experimental data. In the last section of the study, the behavior of flow through the spacer grid was examined and its prominent aspects were highlighted on the most appropriate turbulence model determined in the second part. Results of the study revealed the importance of mesh type. Hybrid mesh having the largest number of structured elements performed remarkably better than the other two on results. While comparisons of numerical and experimental results showed an overall agreement within all turbulence models, RSM LPS presented better results than the others. Lastly, physical appearance of the flow through spacer grids revealed that springs has more influence on flow than dimples and induces transient flow behaviors. As a result, flow through a simple support grid was examined and the most appropriate turbulence model reflecting the actual physics of the flow was determined.
The transported probability density function model combined with the consistent finite volume (FV) method has been applied to simulate the turbulent bluff-body reacting flows. To realistically account for the non-isotropic turbulence effects on the turbulent bluff-body reacting flows, the present PDF transport approach is based on the joint velocity- turbulent frequency-composition PDF formulation. The evolution of the fluctuating velocity of a particle is modeled by a simplified Langevin equation and the particle turbulence frequency is represented by the modified Jayesh - Pope model. Effects of molecular diffusion are represented by the interaction by exchange with the mean (IEM) mixing model. To validate this hybrid FV/PDF transport model, the numerical results are compared with experimental data for the turbulent bluff-body reacting flows.
In spite of progress in the numerical simulation of typhoon wind field in atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), using typhoon wind field model in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulation method can only accurately evaluate typhoon wind field over a general terrain. This method is not enough for a reliable evaluation of typhoon wind field over the actual complex terrain with surface roughness and topography variations. To predict typhoon wind field over the actual complex terrain in ABL, a hybrid numerical simulation method combined typhoon simulation used the typhoon wind field model proposed by Meng et al. (1995) and CFD simulation in which the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are used. Typhoon wind filed during typhoon Dujuan and Imbudo are simulated using the hybrid numerical simulation method, and compared with the results predicted by the typhoon wind field model and the wind field measurement data collected by Fugro Geotechnical Services (FGS) in Hong Kong at the bridge site from the field monitoring system of wind turbulence parameters (FMS-WTP) to validate the feasibility and accuracy of the hybrid numerical simulation method. The comparison demonstrates that the hybrid numerical simulation method gives more accurate prediction to typhoon wind speed and direction, because the effect of topography is taken into account in the hybrid numerical simulation method.
The transported probability density function(PDF) model has been applied to simulate the turbulent nonpremixed piloted jet flame. To realistically account for the mixture fraction PDF informations on the turbulent non-premixed jet flame, the present Lagrangian PDF transport approach is based on the joint velocity-composition-turbulence frequency PDF formulation. The fluctuating velocity of stochastic fields is modeled by simplified Langevin model(SLM), turbulence frequency of stochastic fields is modeled by Jayesh-Pope model and effects of molecular diffusion are represented by the interaction by exchange with the mean (IEM) mixing model. To validate the present approach, the numerical results obtained by the joint velocity-composition-turbulence frequency PDF model are compared with experimental data in terms of the unconditional and conditional means of mixture fraction, temperature and species and PDFs.
A numerical analysis based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations has been carried out for double-circular-arc (DCA) compressor cascades. Two types of double-circular-arc cascades were used in this analysis. The appropriate turbulence model for compressor analysis was selected among the conventional turbulence models such as Baldwin-Lomax, k-$\varepsilon$ and k-$\varepsilon$ models. The results of current study were compared with available experimental data at various incidence angles. The 2-D and 3-D computational codes based on SIMPLE/PWIM algorithm for collocated grid and hybrid scheme for the convective terms were the main features of numerical tools. As commonly known, turbulence modeling is very important for the prediction of cascade flows, which are extremely complex with separation and reattachment by adverse pressure gradient. For selection of turbulence model, 2-D analysis was performed. And then, k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with wall function chosen as the reasonable turbulence model for 3-D calculation was used to increase the efficiency of computation times. A reasonable result of 3-D flow pattern passing through the double-circular-arc cascade was obtained.
An implicit turbulent flow solver is developed for 2-D unstructured hybrid meshes. Spatial discretization is accomplished by a cell-centered finite volume formulation using an upwind flux differencing. Time is advanced by an implicit backward Euler time stepping scheme. Flow turbulence effects are modeled by the Spalart-Allmaras one equation model, which is coupled with wall function. The numerical method is applied for flows on a flat plate, the NACA 0012 airfoil, and the Douglas 3 element airfoil. The results are compared with experimental data.
A model engine having a flat cylinder head and a piston face and an off-center intake valve is investigated in this analysis. Calculation domain is confined to the half of the cylinder with swirl free inlet velocity condition. Due to the absence of measured inlet conditions, the inlet flowrates during induction period are calculated from overall mass and energy conservation requirements. Finite difference equation for velocity and pressure were solved by modified SIMPLER algorithm, standard k-$\varepsilon$turbulence model and hybrid scheme. From the result of prediction, dimensionless velocity distribution and turbulence intensities are investigated at each crank angle.
