An atrium has great potential in natural ventilation aided by buoyance effect. Architectural design of an atrium is very critical to maximize the effect. However, it is not easy of an atrium to have optimum shape for natural ventilation, from the aesthetic and economic point of view. Admitting this condition, we suggested a strategy to promote natural ventilation, which can be adopted only with small design change. At first, we installed BIPV on the top of an atrium to strengthen buoyancy effect, and combine forced ventilation by low pressure fan. To evaluate the performance of the measure, CFD simulation and Energy-Airflow analysis were achieved.

Recently, hybrid air-conditioning system has been proposed and applied to achieve building energy saving. One example is a system combining radiation panel with natural wind-induced cross-ventilation. However, few research works have been conducted on the non-uniformity of thermal comfort in such hybrid air-conditioning system. In this paper, both thermal environment and non-uniform thermal comfort of human thermal model under various air-conditioning system, including hybrid system, were evaluated in a typical office room using coupled simulation of computation fluid dynamics, radiation model and a human thermal model. The non-uniformity of thermal comfort was evaluated from the deviation of surface temperature of human thermal model. Flow fields and temperature distribution in each case were represented.

The ventilation performance of a vertical exhaust duct system in the high riser public house has been evaluated by a commercial software, Fluid Flow, which solves pressure losses through the duct system including bathroom fans and a hybrid roof fan. During the numerical simulations, outdoor wind condition and stack effects in summer and winter were considered as well as the operating conditions of a basement damper and the roof fan. The results show that the bathroom ventilation in summer is the most unsatisfactory. The opening of the basement damper has a problem that the polluted air in the lower floors is exhausted to the underground parking lot, not to the rooftop. If the basement damper is closed, the exhaust flow rate in the lower floors is not sufficient due to the strong flow resistance in the long vertical duct even though the roof fan is under operating.
Background and objective: Moth orchids in the vegetative stage are suitable for a multi-layer growing environment in a closed-type plant factory which can be a good alternative that can reduce production costs by reducing cultivation time and energy cost per plant. This study was conducted to find out the optimal rhizospheric environment for different irrigation methods without a potting medium and rhizospheric ventilation for the vegetative growth of young Phalaenopsis hybrid 'Blanc Rouge' (P. KV600 × P. Kang 1) and Phalaenopsis Queen Beer 'Mantefon' in a closed-type plant factory system. Methods: The one-month-old clonal micropropagules with bare roots rapped with a sponges were fixed on the holes of styrofoam plates above growth beds, and were watered using the ebb-and-flow (EBB) and aeroponic (AER) methods with Ichihashi solution (0.5 strength) once a day at 06:00 (P) or 18:00 (S), and both (PS). Rhizospheric ventilation (V) was also applied to change the temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 concentration of the beds. Plants potted into sphagnum moss and watered once a week were used as the control group. Results: After 12 months of treatment, the growth characteristics of the EBB groups were the best among the treatment groups without a medium, but no effect of irrigation timing was observed. V reduced the temperature, relative humidity and CO2 concentration of the beds. Whereas, EBB+V (ebb-and-flow with ventilation) improved plant growth and reduced the occurrence of disorders and withering. Especially, EBB+V showed a similar performance to the control group. Conclusion: The results indicated that the optimal irrigation method without a potting medium for producing middle-aged potted moth orchids was the EBB system with forced rhizospheric ventilation. Therefore, further studies on the optimal ventilation method and moisture control of the crown need to be carried out to develop the irrigation system without a potting medium for vertical farming in closed-type plant factories.

There was no significant difference in the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) between physical aerosols, NaCl and smoke, and biological aerosols, airborne MS2 virus and P. fluorescens, which implicate that the hybrid-type of air purifier, applying the unipolar ion emission and the radiant catalytic ionization, imposed identical reduction effect on both physical aerosol and bioaerosol. Ventilation decreases the efficiency of air cleaning by unipolar ionization because high ventilation diminishes the particle concentration reduction effect. The particle removal efficiency decreases with increase in the chamber volume because of the augmented ion diffusion and higher ion wall loss rate. Particle size affects the efficiency of air ionization. The efficiency is high for particles with very small diameter because reduction of charge increases with particle size. If there is no increasing supply of ions, the efficiency of air cleaning by unipolar ionization increases with respect to initial concentration of particles because of the large space charge effect at high particle concentration and amplified electric field.
The backlayer phenomena of smoke in the road tunnel is evaluated through numerical experiments. A commercial code, PHOENICS is used to simulate smoke flow in the road tunnel. The independent and dependent variables are ventilation air velocity and the length of backlayer of smoke respectively. Hybrid scheme and $textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is adopted in the simulation process and mass residual is used as a convergence criterion. The experimental results say that the length of backlayer is reduced linearly with the increase of ventilating air velocity and that there is a critical air velocity which prevents from the onset of backlayering phenomena. One finds that there is a fresh air region near the bottom of tunnel which could make the passenger escape from the region polluted by smoke. These phenomena come from the severe vertical stratification of the smoke air mixture in the tunnel.

The market for distributed power generation based on renewable energy is increasing, particularly for standalone mini-grid applications in developing countries with limited energy resources. Stand-alone power systems (SAPS) are of special interest combined with renewable energy design in areas not connected to the electric grid. Traditionally, such systems have been powered by diesel engine generator sets (DEGS), but also hybrid systems with photovoltaic and/or wind energy conversion systems (WECS) are becoming quite common nowadays. Hybrid energy systems can now be used to generate energy consumed in remote areas and stand-alone microgrids. This paper describes the design, simulation and feasibility study of a hybrid energy system for a stand-alone power system. A simulated model is developed to investigate the design and performance of stand-alone hydrogen renewable energy systems. The analysis presented here is based on transient system simulation program (TRNSYS) with realistic ventilation load of a large store. Design of a hybrid energy system is site specific and depends on the resources available and the load demand.
