Numerical Analysis of Electromagnetic Characteristic of High Voltage/Current Cable for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) (수소 연료전지 차량용 고전압 케이블의 전자파 특성 수치해석에 관한 연구)

  • The electromagnetic characteristics of FCEVs (fuel cell electric vehicles) are much different from the existing combustion engine cars as well as hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and pure electric vehicles due to the high voltage/current generated by a fuel cell stack which uses a compressed hydrogen gas reacted with oxygen. To operate fuel cell stack efficiently, BOP (Balance of Plant) is essential. BOP systems are used many not only for motors in water pump, air blower, and hydrogen recycling pump but also inverters for these motors. Since these systems or components are connected by high voltage cables, EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) analysis for high voltage/current cable is the most important element to prevent the possible electric functional safety errors. In this paper, electromagnetic fields of high current/voltage cable for FCEVs is studied. From numerical analysis results, time harmonic magnetic field strength of high current/voltage cable have difference of 20~28 dB according to phase. EMI result considered ground effect of FECV at 10 m shows difference of 14.5 dB at 30 MHz and 2.8 dB at 230 MHz compared with general cable.

  • This paper proposed a regenerative braking system (RBS) strategy for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) with a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) driven by a brushless DC (BLDC) motor. In the regenerative braking mode of BEV, the BLDC motor works as a generator. Consequently, the DC-link voltage is boosted and regenerative braking energy is transferred to a battery and/or ultracapacitor (UC) using a suitable switching pattern of the three-phase inverter. The energy stored in the HESS through reverse current flow can be exploited to improve acceleration and maintain the batteries from frequent deep discharging during high power mode. In addition, the artificial neural network (ANN)-based RBS control mechanism was utilized to optimize the switching scheme of the vehicular breaking force distribution. Furthermore, constant torque braking can be regulated using a PI controller. Different simulation and experiments were implemented and carried out to verify the performance of the proposed RBS strategy. The UC/battery RBS also contributed to improved vehicle acceleration and extended range BEVs.

  • This paper studies battery charging methods using existing motor inductance and 3-phase inverters without an additional charger to charge the battery of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). As inverter switch control and motor coil used as the energy storage device for boosting make the system the boost converter, the additional charger is eliminated and volume, weight, and cost for the charger are reduced. Various charging methods according to topologies of the system and configurations of the controller are analyzed and verified by PSIM simulation.

  • Online simulations are utilized to reduce time and cost in the development and performance optimization of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EV) systems. One of the most important factors in an online simulation is the accuracy of the model. In particular, a model of a battery should accurately reflect the properties of an actual battery. However, precise dynamic modeling of high-capacity battery systems, which significantly affects the performance of a PHEV, is difficult because of its nonlinear electrochemical characteristics. In this study, a dynamic model of a high-capacity battery cell for a PHEV is developed through the extraction of the equivalent impedance parameters using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Based on the extracted parameters, a battery cell model is implemented using MATLAB/Simulink, and charging/discharging profiles are executed for comparative verification. Based on the obtained results, the model is optimized for a high-capacity battery cell for a PHEV. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimental results, thereby validating the developed model and verifying its accuracy.

  • The interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is often used for the traction motor of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) due to its high power density and wide speed range. This paper introduces the 120kW class IPMSM for traction motors in military trucks. This system, as a SHEV (series hybrid electric vehicle), requires a traction motor that can generate high torque. This study introduces a way to reduce costs by proposing a design approach that creates reluctance torque that can be maximized by varying the dq-axis inductance. If a model designed by a design approach meets the desired torque, the magnetic torque can be reduced by an amount equal to the increase in reluctance torque and consequently the amount of permanent magnets can be reduced. A reduction gear and high speed operation of motors are necessary for the miniaturization of the motor. Thus, a fairly large centrifugal force is generated due to the high speed rotation. This force causes mechanical interference between the rotor and the stator, and a design approach for adding an iron bridge is explained to solve the interference. In this study, the initial model and the improved model that reduces cost and improves mechanical durability are compared by FEA, and the models are produced. Finally, the FEM results were verified experimentally.

  • Cooled EGR system is an effective method for the reduction of $NO_x$ emission and PM emission from a diesel engine. Proper choice of wavy cooling fins and gas tubes is a key factor of cooled EGR system. As a part of solutions for energy crisis and environmental problems, hybrid vehicles mounted with diesel engines are under development globally. This study investigates the cooled EGR systems for hybrid diesel engine with the specifications of both optimized wavy cooling fins and improved shape of structure to verify the heat exchange efficiency, outlet temperature and gas pressure drop of cooler by means of numerical analyses and rig performance tests. The output of this study will be applied to a 2.0L hybrid diesel engine which is being developed for domestic and overseas market.

Analysis of Fuel Economy for Series Plug-in Hybrid Electric Bus according to Engine Operation Strategy Based on Simulation (직렬형 플러그인 하이브리드 전기 버스의 엔진 구동 전략에 따른 시뮬레이션 기반 연비 분석)

  • Because of high oil prices and emission gas problems, many governments tighten regulation of fuel economy and emission gas. For Passenger car, there are many researches for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and they are being manufactured. On the other hand, there are few researches for plug-in hybrid electric bus that is heavy commercial vehicle. In this study, analysis of fuel economy for series plug-in hybrid electric bus according to engine operation strategy based on simulation is conducted. Forward simulator is developed using Autonomie. Engine operation strategies consist on constant engine operation strategy and engine on/off operation strategy. Considering the engine operation strategy, results of vehicle speed, engine operating points and fuel economy are obtained and analyzed. As a result, engine on/off operation strategy has more advantage than constant engine operation strategy in terms of fuel economy.

High Coercive Nd-Fe-B Sintered Magnets for High Temperature Application

  • Various sintered magnets containing $28{\sim}31\;wt%$ Nd and $0{\sim}7\;wt%$ Dy were evaluated for coercivity and irreversible flux loss as a preliminary study to develop highly-coercive, high-temperature magnets that can be applied for driving motors in a hybrid vehicle. The sintered magnets were prepared in sequence of strip casting, HD treatment, jet milling, magnetic field pressing, sintering and post-annealing. Increasing Dy content and adjusting post-annealing temperature monotonically increased coercivity of magnets from about 14 kOe to 30 kOe. A magnet containing 28 wt% Nd and 7 wt% Dy exhibits a $(BH)_{max}$+$_i{H_c}$ value of almost 64. This is very close to what the automobile industry considers as the minimum value (65) for a hybrid vehicle system. Moreover, irreversible flux loss of the magnet was about 3% at $200^{\circ}C$, which is well less than the allowable limit (5%) to a driving motor in hybrid vehicles.

  • An advantage of electric vehicles is that they are environmentally sustainable because they do not emit exhaust gases, such as $CO_2$ or Nox. A disadvantage is the low power performance of the motor and battery source, necessitating a reduction in the weight of the vehicle to increase efficiency. Another disadvantage is that the rechargeable battery enables an electric vehicle to only run for a limited number of miles before requiring electric charging. To solve these problems, the hybrid vehicle has been developed by combining environmental sustainability with the high performance of a conventional internal combustion engine. In this study, an electric UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) was transformed into a hybrid vehicle system by outfitting the vehicle with a drive auxiliary power system including a 125 cc internal combustion engine. This modification enabled us to extend the range of the hybrid UTV from 50km to 100km per one electric charging.

  • Recently, metal-composite hybrid structures became a very attractive material system for various applications such as automobile and air vehicles due to their design flexibility as well as superior mechanical properties. On the other hand, recycling is a hot issue to reduce material wastes and environmental pollution, so that many countries made recycling regulations. But the recycling of metal-composite hybrid structures is not fully considered since the development and application are very early stage. We developed and optimized the recycling process for metal-composite hybrid structures based on the easy adaptation of the local recycling companies.
