  • Fuel cell was used as a propulsion system for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the present study. Fuel cell propulsion system are an ideal alternative power source with high energy density for high-endurance UAV. Fuel cell power system provides UAV up to five times the energy densiη of existing batteries. Sodium borohydride, stored in liquid state, was selected as a hydrogen source. Hydrogen generation system consists of catalytic reactor, pump, fuel cartridge, and separator. Hybrid power management system (PMS) between fuel cell and lithium-polymer ba야ery was developed. Motor, pump, and fans, operated on battery power controlled by feedback signals of fuel cell system. Battery was recharged by surpuls powr of fuel cell.

EAV2 is low speed endurance type UAV whose wing span is 6.9 m, and weight is 18 kg. The UAV has flown for 22 hours in June of 2012. The flight test result showed that the propulsion system worked well suppling power for any circumstances during the test flight. Each power source worked according to the design purpose.

  • In this paper, we proposed a hybrid type robot that simultaneously surveillance and reconnaissance on the ground and in the air. It was possible to expand the surveillance and reconnaissance range by expanding the surveillance and reconnaissance area of the ground robot and quickly moving to the hidden area through the drone. First, ground robots go to mission areas through drones and perform surveillance and reconnaissance missions for urban warfare or mountainous areas. Second, drones move ground robots quickly. It transmits surveillance and reconnaissance images of ground robots to the control system and performs reconnaissance missions at the same time. Finally, in order to secure the interoperability of these hybrid robots, basic performance and environmental performance were verified. The evaluation method was tested and verified based on the KS standards.

  • The propulsion technology used in unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)—which represent one of the most important development directions in aviation—is significantly related to their flight performance. This review paper discusses the different types of propulsion technologies used in unmanned aerial vehicles, namely the internal combustion engine (reciprocating, rotary, and gas turbine engines), the hybrid system, and the pure electric system. In particular, this paper presents and discusses the classification, working principles, characteristics, and critical technologies of these types of propulsion systems. These findings are expected to be helpful in establishing a development framework, comprehensive views, and multiple comparisons of future UAV propulsion systems.

  • In the field of UAM, which is attracting attention as a next-generation transportation system, technology developments for using UAVs have been actively conducted in recent years. Since UAVs adopted with these technologies are mainly operated in urban areas, it is imperative that accidents are prevented. However, it is not easy to predict the abnormal flight state of an UAV causing a crash, because of its strong non-linearity. In this paper, we propose a method for predicting a flight state of an UAV, based on a CNN-LSTM hybrid model. To predict flight state variables at a specific point in the future, the proposed model combines the CNN model extracting temporal and spatial features between flight data, with the LSTM model extracting a short and long-term temporal dependence of the extracted features. Simulation results show that the proposed method has better performance than the prediction methods, which are based on the existing artificial neural network model.

  • A Quad Tilt Wing UAV is a new concept hybrid UAV having the advantages of both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. This paper presents longitudinal flight dynamic characteristics of a Quad Tilt Wing UAV. The designed Quad Tilt Wing UAV is a configuration of a tandem wing type aircraft with an actuating motor and propeller mounted at each wing. Momentum theory is used to calculate the thrust, and nonlinear modeling is performed considering lift and drag generated by slip stream effect of propellers. Also, Force and moment variation at each tilting angle is considered. Static trim on longitudinal axis is analyzed via numerical simulation. Componentwise force contribution was analyzed at each trim mode. Dynamic characteristics were evaluated through eigenvalue analysis for a linear model at each flight mode. It is verified that longitudinal dynamic characteristics are changing from unstable to stable state by continuous transition of dominant poles.

  • UAV-UGV teaming concept has been proposed that can compensate for weak points of each platform by providing carrying, launching, recovery and recharging capability for the VTOL-UAV through the host UGV. The teaming concept can expand the observation envelop of the UGV and extend the operational capability of the UAV through mechanical combination of each system. The spherical-shaped coaxial rotorcraft UAV is suggested to provide flexible and precise interface between two systems. Hybrid navigation solution that included vision-based target tracking method for precision landing is investigated and its experimental study is performed. Feasibility study on length-variable rotor to provide the compact configuration of the loaded rotorcraft platform is also described.

  • This study presents computational analyses for low-drag aerodynamic design that are applied to modify a long-endurance UAV. EAV-2 is a test-bed for a hybrid electric power system (fuel cell and solar cell) that was developed by the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) for use in future long-endurance UAVs. The computational investigation focuses on designing a wing with a reduced drag since this is the main contributor of the aerodynamic drag. The airfoil and wing aspect ratio of the least drag are defined, the fuselage configuration is modified, and raked wingtips are implemented to further reduce the profile and induced drag of EAV-2. The results indicate that the total drag was reduced by 54% relative to EAV-1, which was a small-sized version that was previously developed. In addition, static stabilities can be achieved in the longitudinal and lateral-directional by this low-drag configuration. A long-endurance flight test of 22 hours proves that the low-drag design for EAV-2 is effective and that the average power consumption is lower than the objective cruise powerof 200 Watts.

  • Recently, as the needs for eco-friendly aero propulsion system increase gradually, many study works have been conducted to develop the hybrid propulsion system for High Altitude Long Endurance(HALE) UAV. In this study, we analyzed both suitable energy distribution and management methodology among the total energy collected from solar cell and the total required energy of aerial vehicle and required energy of the regenerative fuel cell(RFC) for driving in the night time and optimized the energy balance mechanism based on the ascribed mission profile.
