$Al_2O_3$ fiber and SiC particle hybrid metal matrix composites (MMCs) were manufactured by squeeze casting method investigated for their tribological properties. The pin specimens had different ratios of fiber to particle content but their total weight fraction was constant at 20 wt. %. Tribological tests were performed with a pin-on-disk friction and wear tester. The investigation of the dry tribological characteristics of hybrid MMCs were carried out at room temperature and elevated temperature of$100^{\circ}C$ and$150^{\circ}C$. The morphologies of worn surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to observe tribological characteristics and investigate wear behavior. The results revealed that the wear resistance improved with the content of SiCp increased of the planar random (PR) MMCs at room temperature. At the elevated temperature, it revealed that the wear resistance of normal (N) MMCs was superior to that of the PR-MMCs due to PR-fibers were easily pulled out holistically from the worn surface. Meanwhile, the coefficient of friction decreased with the temperature increasing.
Aluminum based metal matrix composites(MMCs) are well known for their high specific strength, stiffness and hardness. They are gaining further importance because of their high wear resistance. In this study wear behavior of $Al/Al_2O_3/C$ hybrid MMCs fabricated by squeeze infiltration method was characterized by the abrasive wear test under various sliding speeds at room and high temperature. Wear resistance of MMCs was improved due to the presence of reinforcements at high sliding speed. Especially wear resistance of carbon hybrid MMCs was superior to other materials because of its solid lubrication of carbon. The friction coefficient of MMCs was not affected by the sliding speed.
$Al_2O_3$/SiC particulate reinforced (Metal Matrix Composites) MMCs which were produced by using stir casting process, bending strength and hardening behaviour were obtained using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique that uses full factorial design. Factor variables and their ranges were: particle size $2-60{\mu}m$; the stirring speed 450 rpm, 500 rpm and the stirring temperature $620^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$. An empirical equation was derived from test results to describe the relationship between the test parameters. This model for the tensile strength of the hybrid composite materials with $R^2$ adj = 80% for the bending strength $R^2$ adj = 89% were generated from the data. The regression coefficients of this model quantify the tensile strength and bending strengths of the effects of each of the factors. The interactions of all three factors do not present significant percentage contributions on the tensile strength and bending strengths of hybrid composite materials. Analysis of the residuals versus was predicted the tensile strength and bending strengths show a normalized distribution and thereby confirms the suitability of this model. Particle size was found to have the strongest influence on the tensile strength and bending strength.
This paper presents an analytical method considering tensile strength enhancement in hybrid $Al_2O_3$ fiber/particle/aluminum composites(MMCs). The tensile strength and elastic modulus of the hybrid MMCs are even 20% higher than those of the fiber reinforced MMCs with same volume fraction of reinforcements. This phenomenon is explained by the cluster model which is newly proposed in this research, and the strengthening mechanisms by a cluster is analyzed using simple modified rule of mixtures. From the analysis, it is observed that cluster structure in hybrid MMCs increase the fiber efficiency factor for the tensile strength and the orientation factor for the elastic modulus. The present theory is then compared with experimental results which was performed using squeeze infiltrated hybrid MMCs made of hybrid $Al_2O_3$ short fiber/particle preform and AC8A alloy as base metal, and the agreement is found to be satisfactory.

Mechanical properties of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composites fabricated by the reaction squeeze casting were compared with those of ($15%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Ai composites. Al-Ni intermetallic compounds ($10{\sim}20 {\mu}m$) formed by the reaction between nickel powder and molten aluminum were uniformly distributed in the Al matrix. These intermetallic compounds were identified as $Al_3Ni$ using X-ray diffraction analysis and they resulted in beneficial effects on room and high temperature strength and wear resistance. Microhardness values of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composite were greater by about 100Hv than those of ($15%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al composite. Wear resistance of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composites was superior to that of ($15%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al composites regardless of the applied load. While tensile and yield strength of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composites were greater at room temperature and $300^{\circ}C$, strength drop at high temperature was much smaller in hybrid composites.

In the present study, (10%$Al_2O_3$+5%Si)/AZ91 Mg hybrid composite was fabricated using the squeeze casting method. During squeeze casting, molten Mg was infiltrated into the preform of 10%$Al_2O_3$+5%Si and reaction product of $Mg_2Si$ intermetallic compound was formed by the reaction between molten Mg and Si powder. Microstructure has been observed and mechanical properties were evaluated for the reaction squeeze cast (RSC) hybrid composite. It was found that Si powder totally reacted with molten Mg to form $Mg_2Si$. Reinforcement ($Al_2O_3$) and the reaction product ($Mg_2Si$) are fairly uniformly distributed in Mg matrix for the squeeze cast hybrid composite. Mechanical properties were improved with hybridization of reinforcements, namely higher hardness and enhanced wear resistance comparing squeeze cast (15%$Al_2O_3$)/AZ91 Mg composite.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the wear properties of Saffil/Al, Saffil/A12O3/Al and Saffil/SiC/Al hybrid metal matrix composites fabricated by squeeze casting method. Wear tests were done on a pin-on-disk friction and wear tester under both dry and lubricated conditions. The wear properties of the three composites were evaluated in many respects. The effects of Saffil fibers, $\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3$ particles and SiC particles on the wear behavior of the composites were investigated. Wear mechanisms were analyzed by observing the worn surfaces of the composites. The variation of coefficient of friction(COF) during the wear process was recorded by using a computer. Under dry sliding condition, Saffil/SiC/Al showed the best wear resistance under high temperature and high load, while the wear resistances of Saffil/Al and Saffi1/$\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3$/Al were very similar. Under dry sliding condition, the dominant wear mechanism was abrasive wear under mild load and room temperature, and the dominant wear mechanism changed to adhesive wear as load or temperature increased. Molten wear occurred at high temperature. Compared with the dry sliding condition, all three composites showed excellent wear resistance when lubricated by liquid paraffin. Under lubricated condition, Saffil/Al showed the best wear resistance among them, and its COF value was the smallest. The dominant wear mechanism of the composites under lubricated condition was microploughing, but microcracking also occurred to them to different extents.

This study presents a mathematical model predicting the stress-strain behavior of fiber reinforced (FMMCs) and fiber/particle reinforced metal matrix composites (F/P MMCs). MMCs were fabricated by squeeze casting method using Al2O3 short fiber and particle as reinforcement, and A356 aluminum alloy as matrix. The fiber/particle ratios of F/P MMCs were 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 with the total reinforcement volume fraction of 20 vol.%, and the FMMCs were reinforced with 10 vol,%, 15 vol. %, 20 vol. % of fibers. Tensile tests were conducted and compared with predictions which were derived using laminate analogy theory and multi-failure model of reinforcements. Results show that the tensile strength of FMMCs with 10 vol.% of fiber was well matched with prediction, and as the fiber volume increases, predictions become larger than experimental results. The difference between the prediction and experiment is considered to be a result of matrix allowance of fiber damage in tensile loading. As the fiber volume fraction in FMMCs increases, the fiber damage increases and so that the tensile strength is reduced. The strength of F/P MMCs approaches more closely to the prediction than FMMCs reinforced with 20 vol.% of fibers because F/P MMCs contains small quantity of fibers and thus has a positive effect in fiber strengthening.

This study aims at developing the conductive pastes consisting of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone and metal powder as matrix and filler, respectively. Electrical and rheological properties of metal - filled polymer composites are in general strongly affected by particle shape, side and dispersion state of the filler. In highly filled systems, particles tend to form very complex agglomerated structure which is easily changed when subjected to shear deformation. And the breakdown of agglomerated particles due to shear usually leads to the change of electrical conductivity of the composite. In this study, the effect of particle size and dispersion state of filler on the electrical conductivity of the composites are investigated to offer the selection criteria of conductive filler by measuring the rheological properties of uncured composites and the electrical conductivity of the cured composites. It was found that the type of metal filler systematically affected the rheological property, the susceptibility to shear and the degree of change of electrical conductivity of the composite. The effect of shear on the properties is more conspicuous in the composites containing large particle, indicating that both rheological and electrical properties can be improved by controlling the dispersion state at a given filler content.
The lubricant tribological characteristics of $Al_2O_3$ fiber and SiC particle hybrid metal matrix composites (MMCs) fabricated by squeeze casting method was investigated using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The wear tests of the MMCs were performed according to fiber/particle hybrid ratio in the planar-random (PR) and normal (N) orientations sliding against a counter steel disk at a fixed speed and $25\;kg_f$ loading under different sliding distances and temperatures. The test results showed that the wear behavior of MMCs varied with fiber orientation and hybrid ratio. At room temperature, the lubricant wear behavior of F20P0 unhybrid PR-MMCs was superior to that of N-MMCs while the hybrid composites exhibited the reverse lubricant wear behavior. It was also revealed that the wear resistance of PR-MMCs was superior to that of the N-MMCs due to the joint action of reinforcements and lubricant film between the friction surfaces at an elevated temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ for both fiber only and hybrid cases. In case of $150^{\circ}C$, although the trend of weight loss was similar to that of others, the wear resistance of PR-MMCs was better than that of N-MMCs for hybrid MMCs.
