  • The use of carbon fibers (CF) and glass fibers (GF) were combined to strengthen concrete flexural members. In this study, data of tensile tests of 94 hybrid carbon-glass FRP sheets and 47 carbon and GF rovings or sheets were thoroughly investigated in terms of tensile behavior. Based on comparisons between the rule of mixtures and test data, positive hybrid effects were identified for various (GF/CF) ratios. Unlike the rule of mixtures, the hybrid sheets with relatively low (GF/CF) ratios also produced pseudo-ductility. From the calibrated results obtained from experiments, a new analytical model for the stress-strain relationship of hybrid FRP sheets was proposed. Finally, the hybrid effects were verified by structural tests of concrete members strengthened with hybrid FRP sheets and either carbon or glass FRP sheets.

  • A numerical study for the number of terms of a power series stress function and the effect of hybrid element size on stress analysis around a hole in loaded orthotropic composites is presented. The hybrid method coupling experimental and/or theoretical inputs and complex variable formulations involving conformal mappings and analytical continuity is used to calculate tangential stress on the boundary of the hole in uniaxially loaded, finite width glass epoxy tensile plate. The tests are done by rarying the number of terms, element size and nodal locations on the external boundary of the hybrid region. The numerical results indicate that the hybrid method is accurate and powerful in both experimental and numerical stress analysis.

  • The following noble series of statistical copolymers, poly[(2-(3-thienyl)ethanol n-butoxycarbonylmethylurethane)-co-3-hexylthiophene] (PURET-co-P3HT), were synthesized by the chemical dehydrogenation method using anhydrous $FeCl_3$. The structure and electro-optical properties of these copolymers were characterized using $^1H$-NMR, UV-visible spectroscopy, elemental analysis, GPC, DSC, TGA, photoluminescence (PL), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The statistical copolymers, PURET-co-P3HT (1:0, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3), were soluble in common organic solvents and easily spin coated onto indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates. Hybrid bulk heterojunction photovoltaic cells with an ITO/G-PEDOT/PURET-co-P3HT:PCBM:Ag nanowires/$TiO_x$/Al configuration were fabricated, and the photovoltaic cells using PURET-co-P3HT (1:2) showed the best photovoltaic performance compared with those using PURET-co-P3HT (1:0, 2:1, 1:1, 1:3). The optimal hybrid bulk heterojunction photovoltaic cell exhibits a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.58% ($V_{oc}$ = 0.82 V, $J_{sc}$ = 5.58, FF = 0.35) with PURET-co-P3HT (1:2) measured by using an AM 1.5 G irradiation (100 mW/$cm^2$) on an Oriel Xenon solar simulator (Oriel 300 W).

  • The hybrid thin-film (HTF) passivation layer composed of the UV curable acrylate layer and MS-31 (MgO:SiO2=3:1wt%) layer was adopted in organic light emitting diode (OLED) to protect organic light emitting materials from penetrations of oxygen and water vapors. The moisture resistance of the deposited HTF layer was measured by the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). The results showed that the HTF layer possessed a very low WVTR value of lower than $0.007g/m^2$ per day at $37.8^{\circ}C$ and 100% RH. Therefore, the HTF on the OLED was found to be very effective in protect what from the penetrations of oxygen and moisture.

  • Organic-inorganic hybrid mesoporous materials were prepared by co-condensation of organosilanes with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) or 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTSE). Their removal capability of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air was evaluated and compared with that of inorganic hydrophilic mesoporous material, SBA-15 that was prepared with TEOS only. It was found that the increased hydrophobicity of mesoporous materials due to the presence of organic group, could enhance the VOCs removal by adsorption in the air. An organic-inorganic hybrid material prepared by the co-condensation of BTSE/phenyl triethoxysilane (90/10 by weight) was a typical example of superior adsorbent. It was also observed that these organic-inorganic hybrid materials can be utilized as absorbents for the removal of oil dispersed in water.

  • Herein, we investigated the thermal conductivity and thermal stability of natural rubber composite systems containing hybrid fillers of boron nitride (BN) and aluminum nitride (AlN). In the hybrid system, the bimodal distribution of polygonal AlN and planar BN particles provided excellent filler-packing efficiency and desired energy path for phonon transfer, resulting in high thermal conductivity of 1.29 W/mK, which could not be achieved by single filler composites. Further, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was compounded with a commonly used naphthenic oil, which substantially increased thermal conductivity to 3.51 W/mK with an excellent thermal stability due to facilitated energy transfer across the filler-filler interface. The resulting PEG-incorporated hybrid composite showed a high thermal degradation temperature (T2) of 290℃, a low coefficient of thermal expansion of 26.4 ppm/℃, and a low thermal distortion parameter of 7.53 m/K, which is well over the naphthenic oil compound. Finally, using the Fourier's law of conduction, we suggested a modeling methodology to evaluate the cooling performance in thermal management system.

  • Composite materials consisting of pure aluminum matrix reinforced with different amounts of graphite particles are successfully fabricated by mechanical ball milling and spark plasma sintering (SPS) processes. The shrinkage rates of the composite powders vary with the amount of graphite particles and the lowest shrinkage value is observed for the composite with the highest amount of graphite particles. The current slopes of time increase with increase in the amount of graphite particles whereas the current slopes of temperature show the opposite trend. The highest thermal conductivity is achieved for the composite with the least amount of graphite particles. Therefore, the thermal properties of the composite materials can be controlled by controlling the amount of the graphite particles during the SPS process.

  • Laser-Induced Thermal Imaging (LITI) is a laser addressed patterning process and has unique advantages, such as high-resolution patterning with over-all position accuracy of the imaged stripes within 2.5 micrometer and scalability to large-size mother glass. This accuracy is accomplished using real-time error correction and a high -resolution stage control system that includes laser interferometers. Here the new concept of mixed hybrid system which complement the advantages of small molecular and polymeric materials for use as an OLED; our system can realize the easy processing of polymers and high luminance efficiency of recently developed small molecules. LITI process enables to pattern the stripes with excellent thickness uniformity and multi-stacking of various functional layers without using any type of fine metal shadow mask. In this study, we report a full-color hybrid OLED using the multi-layered structure of small molecular/polymeric species.

  • Thick inorganic-organic hybrid films were prepared on ITO-coated glass substrates by the electrophoretic sol-gel deposition of polyphenylsilsesquioxane particles. The morphology of the deposited films changed from the aggregate of the spherical particles to monolith by heat treatment at temperatures higher than $200^{\circ}C$. Transparency of the films was significantly improved accompanied by the morphological change of the particles. The degree of the morphological change was governed by two factors; maximum heat treatment temperature and heating rate. Transparent thick films of ca. 3$\mu\textrm{m}$ in thickness were obtained only by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2h with rapid heating from room temperature to $400^{\circ}C$. These films obtained were strongly adhered to the ITO-coated glass substrates and has a very smooth surface.
