  • This paper presents a study of the tensile behavior of carbon and glass fiber reinforced epoxy hybrid laminates manufactured by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). The objective of this study was to develop and characterize carbon fiber reinforced plastic hybrid composite material that is low cost and light-weight and that possesses adequate strength and stiffness. The effect of position and content of the glass fabric layer on the tensile properties of the hybrid laminates was examined. The strength and stiffness of the hybrid laminates showed a steady decrease with an increase of the glass fabric content this decrease was almost linear. Fracture strain of these laminates showed a slight increasing trend when glass fabric content was increased up to 3 layers, but at a glass fabric content > 3 layers the strain was almost constant. When glass fabric layers were at both outer surfaces, the hybrid laminate exhibited a slightly higher tensile strength and elastic modulus due to the small amount of glass yarn pull-out.

  • A hybrid dust-collector combining a fabric filter with centrifugal force was developed to enhance the performance of the conventional fabric filter systems and its performances were evaluated to compare to that of the existing dust collector. The pressure drop rapidly increased with increasing the elapsed time and the face velocity in two filtration systems. But the increasing ratio of a hybrid dust-collector compare to the existing dust collector was lower. This results were confirmed from the performance such as cleaning interval, residual pressure drop and dust loading rate. The overall collection efficiency of the hybrid dust-collector was more than 99.6% and this showed a improvement of 0.6~2% than that of the existing dust collector. Especially, the fractional collection efficiency at the particle size of around 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ is about 4% higher than that of the existing dust collector.

  • The mechanical and thermal properties of spun carbon fabric/continuous carbon fabric interplay hybrid composite materials have been studied. The properties of the hybrid composites are compared with those of the continuous carbon fabric/phenolic composites and spun carbon fabric /phenolic composites. Through hybridization, tensile strength and flexural strength of hybrid composites were increased by about 17%, and 10%, respectively compared with spun carbon composites. The thermal conductivity of the hybrid composite is lower approximately 4~6% along the direction parallel to the laminar plane than that of the continuous carbon/phenolic composite.

  • This article describes a simple and cost effective fabrication procedure by using hand lay-up technique that is employed for the manufacturing of thin-walled axi-symmetric composite shell structures with carbon, glass and hybrid woven fabric composite materials. The hand lay-up technique is very commonly used in aerospace and marine industries for making the complicated shell structures. A generic fabrication procedure is presented in this paper aimed at manufacture of plain Carbon Fabric Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) and Glass Fabric Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) shells using hand lay-up process. This paper delivers a technical breakthrough in fabrication of composite shell structures without any joints and wrinkling. The manufacture of stiffened CFRP shells, laminated CFRP shells and hybrid (carbon/glass/epoxy) composite shells which are valued by the aerospace industry for their high strength-to-weight ratio under axial loading have also been addressed in this paper. A fabrication process document which describes the major processing steps of the composite shell manufacturing process has been presented in this paper. A study of microstructure of the glass fabric/epoxy composite, carbon fabric/epoxy composite and hybrid carbon/glass/fabric epoxy composites using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) has been also carried out in this paper.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of hybrid collection system combined with centrifugal force of cyclone and filtration of bag filter in one unit system. The experiment and numerical simulation are executed for the analysis of collection efficiency and pressure drop characteristics of hybrid system in comparison with those of a general fabric bag filter with the various experimental parameters such as inlet velocity(filtration velocity), dust concentration and dust type, etc.. In present system, dust particles tangentially coming into the system body are controlled by the centrifugal force effect, and the next collection is made out by the filtration mechanism in the fabric filter media. Therefore, the effective first collection causes the decrease of dust loading on the fabric filter, and it presents quite a lower pressure drop of fabric filter than that of a general fabric filter. At the inlet velocity, $21{\sim}27m/sec$ and inlet concentration(fly ash) $300mg/m^3$, pressure drops through the filter media of hybrid system are shown lower as $10{\sim}22mmH_2O$ comparing to those($17{\sim}33mmH_2O$) of a general fabric bag filter.

  • The mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of through-the-thickness stitched plain weave glass fabric/polyurethane foam/epoxy composites were studied. Hybrid composites were fabricated using resin infusion process (RIP). Stitched sandwich composite increased drastically the flexural properties as compared with the unstitched fabrics. The breaking of stitching yarns was observed during the flexural test and this failure mode yielded relatively high flexural properties. Composites with stitched sandwich structure improved the mechanical properties with increasing the number of stitching yarns. From this study, it was concluded that proper combination of stitching density and types of stitching fiber is important factor for through-the-thickness stitched composite panels.

  • In this paper, a novel hybrid composite shield to protect space structures from hypervelocity impact of micrometeoroid and space debris is proposed. The finite element model of the proposed shield was constructed and finite element analysis was conducted to approximate the energy absorption rate. Before the final model analysis, analysis of each component including the aluminum plate, PMMA plate, and intermediate layer of fabric was performed, verifying the finite element model of each component. The material properties used in the analyses were predicted material property values for high strain rates. The analysis results showed that, other than the fabric, the energy absorption rate of each component was in agreement. Afterwards, the finite element model of the hybrid composite shield was constructed, where it was analyzed for the restrained and unrestrained fabric boundary condition cases. Through the finite element analysis, the fiber pullout mechanism was realized for the hybrid shield with free boundary inserted fabric, and it was observed that this mechanism led to energy absorption increase.

  • Even though corrugated boards are the most common packaging materials for agricultural products, conventional corrugated boards are not able to maintain the freshness of agricultural products. In order to overcome the limitations of conventional corrugated boards, a new hybrid corrugated board-composed of linerboard, a corrugating medium, and non-woven fabric-was designed to possess antibacterial, high porous and shock-absorbing properties. In this study, we compared the physical properties of non-woven fabric to those of the base papers of conventional corrugated boards and developed a new adhesive system as a first step toward manufacturing the hybrid corrugated board. We found that the non-woven fabric, which had relatively high elongation, was applicable in the corrugated board process, and that the manufacturing conditions must be controlled in order to prevent the break of the non-woven fabric. The mixture of starch and styrene-butadiene (SB) latex showed high adhesive strength, but the addition level of SB latex should not exceed 30% in starch solution.

  • In resin infusion process(RIP), the fiber and the resin are in contact with each other for an impregnation step and often results in flow-induced defects such as poor fiber wetting and void formation. Resin flow characteristics in transverse direction and process modeling for woven fabric were studied, and the process modeling was applied to the manufacturing of hybrid composite materials. This study also considered the compressibility of woven fabrics in a series of compression force, and it was fitted well to an elastic model equation. Void formation was varied with the processing conditions in the stage of manufacturing composites using RIP. It was concluded from this study that proper combination of pressure build-up and dynamic heating condition makes important factor for flow-induced composite processing.

  • A study has been made on the quantification and evaluation of fabric pilling using two-dimensional and three-dimensional hybrid imaging methods. Two-dimensional imaging method was good for some samples while three-dimensional measurement method for others, according to the properties of their base fabric. Various image processing techniques as well as three-dimensional data processing algorithms were applied for the extraction of pills from measured data and a series of shape parameters have been defined for the objective evaluation of fabric pilling. An evaluation criterion that is compatible with the conventional evaluation method has been proposed by applying the new evaluation method to the current photographic standards.
