Colletotrichum musae was isolated from dark-brown anthracnose lesions on commercial banana (Musa sapientum L.) to establish the causal agent of the symptom. The fungus grew fast and produced white aerial mycelium on PDA. Acervuli developed abundantly on culture plates after incubation for 10 days at $25^{\circ}C$. Pinkish conidial masses were produced on the acervuli, which mostly coalesced together, Conidia were aseptate, hyaline, straight, ellipsoid to globose, and 14.5$\times$6.9 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Black, clavate, round, or irregular-shaped appressoria measuring 8.8$\times$6.8 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were readily formed from germ tubes. Setae-like structures were not found either on the lesion or on the cultures. Sclerotia were also absent. Among the media, PDA medium was the best for mycelial growth. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth was $28^{\circ}C$, while the optimum pH ranged from pH 5.5 to 6.5. The isolates of C musae caused black necrotic lesions on banana fruits by needle-wound inoculation, and orange-colored spore masses were produced on the lesions. The fungus also caused discoloration on apple fruits inoculated.
A sclerotinia rot of Leonurus sibiricus caused by Sclerotinia sclerotio겨m occurred severely in farmer's fields at Seosang-myon, Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, Korea in 2001. The typical symptoms of the disease were that leaves, stems or collar of the infected plants at first became darker green and then watery soft rotted, and white fluffy mycelia formed on the lesion developed into black sclerotia later, Sclerotia on the plant and PDA medium were globose to cylindrical or irregular in shape, and 0.8~10.3$\times$0.8~6.4 m in size. Aphothecia with numerous asci were cup-shape, and 0.6~1.2 cm in diameter, Asci with 8 spores were cylindrical, and 87~246$\times$4.6~21.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Ascospores of one cell were hyaline, ellipsoid to ovoid in shape, and 10.2~14.6$\times$4.7~7.2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. The range of temperature for mycelial growth was from 5 to 3$0^{\circ}C$, and the optimum was $25^{\circ}C$. This is the first report on the sclerotinia rot of L. sibiricus caused by Sclerotinia sclerotioum in Korea.
A severe pink mold rot on matured melon fruits occurred under a glass tunnel cultivation in Chinju at Kyeongasngnam-do Agricultural Research and Extention Services on May of 1998. Basal portion of the fruits toward blossom end was preferably infected and colonized by the fungus. The causal fungus consistently isolated from the lesions was identified as Trichothecium roseum based on following mycological characteristics. Conidia were hyaline or brightly colored, 2-celled, ovoid or elipsoid, characteristically held together zi-zag chains. Conidiophore was long, slender, simple, septate, bearing conidia-meristem arthrospores-apically, singly when young and successively by slight growth of conidiphore apex. Optimum temperature for mycelial growth and conidial germination was recorded at 20~$25^{\circ}C$. However, over 48% of the fungal conidia were germinated at 15$^{\circ}C$ and mycelial growth was only slightly slower than $25^{\circ}C$. The temperature profiles and high humidity available during the cultivation were considered favorable for the pathogen as showing 22% infection rate on matured melon fruits cv. Saros. This is the first report of pink mold rot of melon caused by T. roseum in Korea.

Castleman's disease or angiofollicular lymph node hyperplasia is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder. Complete surgical resection was recommended in unicentric Castleman's disease. Radiotherapy was considered alternative therapeutic option. However, there have been consistent favorable responses to radiotherapy. We also experienced two cases of uncentric Castleman's disease salvaged successfully with radiotherapy. This paper described these cases and reviewed the literature about Castleman's disease treated with radiotherapy. Reviewed cases showed that radiotherapy is a successful treatment option in unicentric Castleman's disease. Furthermore, our report confirms the radiotherapy role in uncentric Castleman's disease.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the cytomorphologic features of histologically confirmed clear cell carcinoma of the ovary and to evaluate the applicability of scrape or fine-needle aspiration cytology in making an intraoperative diagnosis. We reviewed scrape or fine-needle aspiration cytology findings in tissues taken from 6 patients with clear cell carcinoma of the ovary. The cytologic diagnosis was based primarily on findings in alcohol-fixed, hematoxylin-eosin (H-E) stained smears. The formation of material resembling a basement membrane was a characteristic finding in these smears. This extracellular hyaline material was stained light pink with H-E and was frequently found within tumor cell clusters as well as in the background material. Multinucleated giant cells were found occasionally. Each tumor cell had an abundant, clear, or granular cytoplasm with a distinct cellular membrane. Scrape cytology is a simple and rapid supportive method and could be helpful in diagnosing clear cell carcinoma of the ovary, especially when marked artifacts appear in the frozen section.
Purpose; Tracheal transplantation is necessary in patients with extensive tracheal stenosis, congenital lesions and many oncologic conditions but bears many critical problems compared with other organ transplantations. The purpose of this study was to make an intestine-cartilage composite graft for potential application for tracheal reconstruction by free intestinal graft. Methods; Hyaline cartilage was harvested from trachea of 2 weeks old New Zealand White Rabbits. Chondrocytes were isolated and cultured for 8 weeks. Cultured chodrocytes were seeded in the PLGA scaffolds and mixed in pluronic gel. Chondrocyte bearing scaffolds and gel mixture were embedded in submucosal area of stomach and colon of 3kg weighted New Zealand White Rabbits under general anesthesia. 10 weeks after implantation, bowels were harvested for evaluation. Results; We could identify implantation site by gross examination and palpation. Developed cartilage made a good frame for shape memory Microscopic examinations include special stain showed absorption of scaffold and cartilage formation even though not fully matured Conclusion; Intestine-cartilage composite graft could be applicable to future tracheal substitute and needs further Investigations.
Nine free-living heterotrophic flagellates were cultured from marine intertidal sediments and freshwater sediments from Korea. These species are described with uninterpreted records based on light microscopy of living cells and reported taxonomically for the first time from Korea. Diagnostics of these species are as follows; Notosolenus hemicircularis: 9-11.8 ㎛ long with flagellar reservoir, ventrally flattened and dorsally convex with hyaline semicircular collar around short anterior neck, and 8 ridges on cell surface. Thecamonas tranhens: 4.5-7.1 ㎛ long, plastic with proboscis comprising an anterior flagellum surrounded by membranous sleeve. Bodomorpha minima: 4.5-7.0 ㎛ long, rigid with small rostrum in anterior end and active anterior flagellum. Cercomonas hiberna: 5.6-10.9 ㎛ long, very plastic with pseudopodia, cytoplasmic strand and 1 or 2 contractile vacuoles. Cercomonas pellucida: 7.5-13 ㎛ long, plastic with pseudopodia, cytoplasmic strand and single contractile vacuole. With nucleus closely connected to basal bodies. Eocercomonas echina: 4.7-6.5 ㎛ long, plastic with pseudopodia, cytoplasmic strand and 1 or 2 contractile vacuoles. Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) is a soil improvement method that a sand charge is introduced into the pipe, and the pipe is withdrawn part away while the sand pile is compacted and its diameter is enlarged. The sand used in this method should be of good quality. In Korea, crushed stone and washed sea sand are used frequently in SCP. However, use of these materials is restricted because of environmental problem and deficiency of supply. In the copper smelting process, about 0.7 million tons of copper slag are produced in Korea. The range of particle size distribution of copper slag is from 0.15mm to 5mm, so it can be a substitute for sand, and the relatively high specific gravity compared with the sand, is its characteristic. Copper slag is hyaline and so stable environmentally that in foreign country, such as Japan, Germany etc., it is widely used in harbor, revetment and offshore structure construction works. Therefore, in this study, the several laboratory tests were peformed to evaluate the applicability of copper slag as a substitute for sand of SCP. From the mechanical property test, the characteristics of sand and copper slag were compared and analyzed, and from laboratory model test, the strength of composite ground was compared and analyzed by monitoring the stress and ground settlement of clay, SCP and copper slag compaction pile. Specially, this study focused on the application of copper slag as sand substitute in SCP pilot tests based on laboratory tests results.

A case of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma transformed in pleomorphic adenoma occurring in palate of a 61 years old woman is reported. The tum or was composed of 2 different components, pleomorphic adenoma and epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma, accounting for approximately 40% and 60% of whole tumor, respectively. As the results of the immunohistopathologic study, epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma showed multiple tubular or solid nest, which were separated by a basement membrane and considered of variable proportion of 2 cell types, cuboidal epithelial cells positive for cytokeratin and clear myoepithelial cells positive for glial fibrillary acid protein, wheres the myoepithelial nest of pleomorphic adenoma intermingled with hyaline and myxoid stroma. The malignancy was demonstrated by convincing evidence of invasion into the submucosa, although the epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma component was mostly surrounded by the pleomorphic adenoma componemts. An increased immunoreactivity of proliferating cell nuclear antign in the epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma area in comparison to the pleomorphic adenoma also suggested epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma arising in a pleomorphic adenoma.

Two unreported fungal isolates, KNU-GW1901 and KNU-AP100C, were collected from soil sample in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. Their cultural and morphological characteristics were examined after 4 weeks of incubation at 25℃ on potato dextrose agar (PDA), malt extract agar (MEA), and oatmeal agar (OA). The conidial shape of KNU-GW1901 was aseptate, hyaline, globose to ellipsoidal, oblong, and reniform to pyriform and 2.61-4.97×1.93-3.61 ㎛ in size, whereas no conidial structures were observed in KNU-AP100C. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, large subunit (LSU), and small subunit (SSU) sequences were used to determine the taxonomic positions of the strains using the maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree. The isolate KNU-GW1901 was closely clustered with Plenodomus sinensis MFLUCC 17-0767, and KNU-AP100C was closely matched with P. collinsoniae CBS 120227. Based on the findings of morphological, cultural, and phylogenetic analysis, the isolates KNU-GW1901 and KNU-AP100C were identical to the previously described P. sinensis and P. collinsoniae isolates, respectively, which are first reported in Korea.
